For anyone curious, at 35:52 the radiation levels that give a current reading are per hour. So it was 50R/h in that case, the "R" stands for REM. If you work with any type of radiation you are allowed 5R per year. These people were receiving 10 years of the (maximum allowable dosage per year) in one hour. These are all numbers according to the NRC if I remember them correctly.
When they drove through the red forest what was the level in REM?
@@meganisscaredIt’s tough to say tbh. A lot of geiger counters use milli-sieverts while we used milli-roentgen and I can’t recall if the conversion is the same.
I think the most they saw was about 0.15mS/hr for about 5 seconds? To put it into perspective you could stand somewhere with 0.50mS/hr for 100 hours and probably be okay, still way over what you want in such a short time tho lol. That would be 5R in around 4 days.
The way radiation works is weird when it comes to time. Theoretically you could be exposed to 20R over the span of a year and be fine. But if your body was exposed to 20R worth immediately your cells wouldn’t be able to regenerate fast enough and would breakdown from the inside out until you die.
The molten core after the explosion was putting off so much radiation that they called it madusa. This is because the only way they could look at it without dying was with a mirror.. Yikes. It must’ve been something crazy like 100,000,000mS/hr
All that being said, I wouldn’t be that worried standing in a zone putting out 0.15mS/hr if that was why you were curious lol.
@@meganisscaredREM stands for (roentgen equivalent man). Thats most likely what the geiger counter is reading it as just in Sieverts. It’s a little less than 1 RAD.

Wow my grandfather actually went to Kyiv right after the explosion and was caught under radioactive rain as well. He thought nothing of it because they wouldn't release any real information about the event. One of their relatives who was a doctor found out and notified him that he would grow incredibly sick and die within the next five years in which he so unfortunately did. The cancer slowly overtook him; it was an infection running through the inside of his entire body. I've never met him because he passed away when my mother was 11 years of age, but this tragedy will forever haunt me.
This event occurred 3 years before I was born, and I never got to learn about it until now. Thanks for the documentary! You boys are stepping up your game. Great footage and information.
I'm just curious (not being rude or anything) how did you not know? I was born in 2000 but still somehow I just came to know about it UA-cam and my family members. It's a worldwide known disaster
@@bahnishikhadas424 Not a problem. I heard the word Chernobyl, probably in reference to other world events with other random documentaries I watched, and I knew it was nuclear, but I never knew the details. I assumed it was an attack from some other nation, never heard it was an accident. Also, the public school system in America is absolutely terrible. And my family is full of idiots. So, if I wanted to learn anything, I had to go research it myself. As a teen, I didn't even know Hitler existed, and when I tried to ask my friends at the time what Nazis were, no one wanted to answer. I was glad there was a lot of documentaries on that topic.

My mom was actually affected by Chernobyl. She lived in Latvia and was outside when it happened. She was 4 years old and the doctors didn’t discover she had it until she was 12 years old, which then they found out it was thyroid cancer. She thankfully only got half of her thyroid taken out and she’s still with us today. Crazy when she’s explaining everything that happened because tons and tons of people died from it. So sad how all of this happened but I’m glad their talking about it. Just be careful because my mom says it’s very dangerous to even go there now because there’s tons of radiation still left. So be careful!
I'm also Latvian! Crazy to think that If we wouldn't have gotten lucky with the wind we would also be even more radiated and possibly millions could've died!

What breaks my heart the most is just the fact a huge chunk of Ukraine is gone, unlivable forever. Imagine just having a huge chunk of your home country gone, it's like a part of the nation's soul is just...gone. Devastating to say the least.
Belarus (6 miles from Chernobyl to the north) actually received at least 70% of the radioactive fallout from the disaster. If you looked at the map where they showed the area that won’t be inhabitable for potentially millions of years, it’s pretty much all focused at Chernobyl and north to Belarus. While there is a large amount of Ukrainian territory that is contaminated and likely unlivable forever, Belarus rarely gets mentioned. It was RIGHT on the border. It’s not like the plant was in the center of the country. It was pretty much as far to the edge as it could be.
Also a big part of Belarus, actually Kiev dodged a bullet since the greater part of the fallout went north.
Unlivable ever imagine having a chunk of your home country gun and part of the natural soul is just gone desperative standing to say the least

Sometimes the scariest villain of them all is just....humanity itself. The world has already been overwhelmed by one Chernobyl and one exclusion zone. It cannot afford it anymore.
Mankind's greatest downfall, will be its pride and arrogance.
@McD the t you kinda explained it yourself. It's nearly forgotten, because it wasn't as bad. Fukishima is NOT comparable to Chernobyl. Not by a long shot. The accident at Fukushima occurred after a series of tsunami waves struck the facility and disabled systems needed to cool the nuclear fuel. The accident at Chernobyl stemmed from a flawed reactor design and human error. It released about 10 times the radiation that was released after the Fukushima accident.
@McD the t dude yes they're all bad BUT CHERNOBYL WAS ON ANOTHER LEVEL. That's what you're not getting. You CAN'T ON ANY LEVEL compare it to any other disaster event.
@@TheRibottoStudios exactly. people like the above dude always with the stupid WHATABOUISM. We're talking about an event that would have ended the world if it hadn't been contained. Would fukushima end the world? probably, probably not. Both Fukushima and Chernobyl are huge environmental disasters. But Chernobyl produced more environmental contamination. While people have returned to continue containment efforts, there are still large areas where people simply can not go or risk lethal exposure. Fukushima did not produce as much environmental contamination as Chernobyl, but it is in a much more populated area, near the ocean, and has the potential to impact more people as a result of its location. So how you measure environmental impact is debatable (people displaced, wildlife impact, cost of cleanup).CONSIDERING Chernobyl's accident released TEN TIMES the radiation that was released after Fukushima, I'd say Chernobyl was and will be the worst thing to happen on this planet in terms of nuclear disaster.
@@thewatcher6969 Yes but it is also very important to consider the huge benifits nuclear energy has had in terms of replacing fossil fuels that are incredibly more dangerous. Chernobyl like you stated is and probably will be the worst nuclear disaster ever, yet it had a quite small death toll as WHOs upper estimate is that 4000 people will die as a cause of chernobyl compared to the 1 in fukushima and 0 in 3 mile island. Comparing that to 1,5 million deaths that occur EVERY year because of air pollution from coal power plants.

IKR ITS SCARY
It’s the “we made it..” when you guys saw the Ferris wheel
That got me so choked up.. you guys are incredible. Thank you for the best content always 🖤
That "What sup guys, it's Sam and Colby!" Never gets old in every video ❤
i started being interested in Chernobyl around 13/14 and that’s when docs on youtube started coming out. as a now 20 year old this is probably one of the best ones i’ve watched. you talked to real survivors and someone who worked on the plant. that’s a different vibe in this video and a whole different atmosphere. really enjoyed this video
I love how you guys are giving a huge history lesson between things that I’ve learned just in regular science/biology class and history class from school. Amazing content! Such a crazy experience ☢️
Nate's narrative throughout this video is literally everything! He is able to add a level of seriousness that honestly takes the video up a notch!
he just repeated what he just heard
when you think about it it’s so beautiful to find this but at the same time it’s so sad because your walking through this place where so many people made so many memories and now it’s just all broken down and empty
I found this so fascinating yet so sad, the thought that most of them didn’t know how much danger they were in is so upsetting.
I love how sam, and colby explain everything it be making more sense. Sam should’ve been a history teacher.
sam would be a great history teacher but wouldnt you rather have him on this channel with his best friend?
Dude i love their videos but what i love more is seeing guests & byfar ive loved seeing nate on here more!
I think Nate would be an amazing teacher also
@@_hi_3363 omg yeah he definitely would to be honest
@@unknownuser-ke8pr me too they are so interesting and entertaining to watch
As a lover of history and a huge Chernobyl nerd, I love this. You guys were super respectful when speaking to the locals who may not understand English well, you went above and beyond to help breakdown the knowledge of the event so it was more understandable. Like many others, Chernobyl is a place I'd love to visit. Thanks for such a great video guys
When Igor said ''you can probably olso get cancer'' and when colby said ''I will get Thyroid cancer for radio doggy'' and then found out about colby getting cancer got chills down my spine-
I love how Nate knows all these facts this makes everything so much better. Like it starts at 100% but with the facts it goes to 150%
400 likes thank you

@@stalecracker6931 i swear I’ve watched the whole video and he did not say that I know I’m not stupid he did not say that at all for a fact
@@redarrowplayz4538 You don't get it but I do. Basically the guy said to watch the whole video since its like a Netflix documentary
@@mrkrabsbtw4806 ahhhh I was going to say they didn’t actually say that at all
I just recently got into Sam and Colby and watching this video and Colby joking about thyroid cancer is crazy to me. That he was joking about it and actually got cancer, different kind but still, blows my mind. Im glad he's free of it now❤
Yes! You boys are making documentaries now and I’m living for it. This is such a powerful story that not a lot of people know about. I love all the history you guys put in this video. Such great work guys! This video was powerful thank you for going, filming and doing the story justice. I enjoyed watching it thank you.
What y’all do honestly impact not just my life but also my thinking. This has really got me considering becoming a paranormal investigator when I’m older.
I’ve never heard of Chernobyl until now and this is my FAVORITE documentary! The history here is so shocking and I learned A LOT from it. I’m proud of you guys coming here and risking your lives!

@Олег Пчёлкин nice I went to yor channel but it's in some other language and I don't know that language so sorry I can't watch it because I wont understand what u are saying
You should se the hbo series about it . Bro . I’d recommend
There’s some more amazing documentaries about it that are truly fascinating, you should check them out :)
@@silveradols0021 ok thanks for telling imma watch it
Sam and Kobe made me first love Chernobyl. That’s why I love it now I really want to go because of them
My favourite thing about Sam and Colby is whenever they go anywhere, they do lots of research about it to assure their safety
10th like👍🏻
They should play these kinda videos in schools and i’d actually pay attention and learn something ✨🙌🏼
I've seen a lot of Chernobyl documentaries but this one hits different! I love the way you guys are taking it, showing the personal toll of not just the liquidators but everyone that once resided in what is now the exclusion zone.
Yeah they go it to so much more detail than most other people I've seen go there.
19:50 YEAHHH!!!! LETS GIVE IT UP FOR POCKETS!!!!!
Whoever has seen "Chernobyl Diaries" would be terrified to be there. I'm just waiting for something to jump out and grab one of them! 😬 and poor doggy, I would want to bring him home with me too. He's so cute and sweet I feel bad that he's there all alone with all that radiation😢
Great movie truth be told.
that movie was so cool an scary! XD
one of my favorite movies of all time!
Interesting fact: we learned about this even a lot in xray school. My teacher explained that this event lead to a lot of our knowledge now of radiation safety! About dose levels and long term effects. The victims and children of the victims are still today being recorded to learn more about radiation safety and care.
Neat!! Thanks! Makes me want to look up how they are doing.
I watched a youtuber sneak into the exclusion zone years ago and thought it was so cool. Now being on the legal side and seeing the actual tour is pretty fascinating as well haha
I guess so., the thing I dont like is how they say that they are "exploring" and that this is not our typical youtube video, when it's just so easy to pay for a tour around chernobyl and it's not even expensive... There is no much exploring or adventure in being carried around a city on a bus. but surely they make it look like they did something hugely adventurous and unique. I'd rather watch stalkers' videos, those are real explores.
@@vanessaruiz4705 so u want them to break the law for your entertainment
@@itsalonzia lol you are totally missing the point, and surely on purpose.
@@vanessaruiz4705 I mean you literally said "I'd rather watch stalkers videos, those are real explorers" what could've implied in that sentence if it's not saying that you prefer them going illegal way? 🤷🏻
@@Yuqideqiko I said this is not an explore and I'd appreciate them not doing clickbaits.
this was such an incredible video. thank you for teaching me so many new things. no sam and colby video is ever boring.
Nate should be a teacher, he explains things so clearly and makes it easy to comprehend.
So glad you guys had a chance to go explore here before everything started breaking out. Feel so bad for these people with everything going on right now. I hope the workers in this video are ok
This is the most fascinating history to me. The history behind Pripyat and Chernobyl as a whole is just crazy. One of my favorite things to research
Sam slapping nate that was personal but a tad funny😅
Catching up on these videos still and came across this series❤ wanted to say a big thank you to all the liquidators, firefighters, and any others that help to clean the aftermath of the Power plant reactor combusting. Those are real heros like it hit alot different and harder. It was amazing hearing the history and the explanation throughout the video. Thank you to the tour guide and all the speakers that told their story of what happened. 🥰❤️🥰❤️🥰❤️🥰❤️🥰❤️🥰❤️🥰
