@@np387 bro ur making stuff up, there was No suicide squad. Those people that went into the power plant were experienced engineers and scientists Who worked as liquidators
@Name-ix6lz No there was a suicide squad, they had to shut off the water in the cooling control room or something like that because if the radioactive sodium mixed with the water that was slowly flooding the plant would create a bigger explosion than the original one.

Just to add on about the firemen's clothing:
When the firemen arrived, many of them were soaking wet, most were already exibiting signs of acute radiation poisoning; burns, blisters, internal bleeding, skin discoloration, etc, and the nurses needed to take their clothes off of them because the clothes were so radioactive that it continued to spread and seep radiation into their skin and their surroundings. Once the nurses realized the clothing was causing secondary exposure, the nurses cut the uniforms off of the men and put them as far away from the patients as they could - the basement. Obviously anyone who touched the clothing could get radiation poisining (and still to this day) so no one ever went back to move those uniforms out of the basement. No effort was made to "preserve" them, but infact the exact opposite, an effort was made not to ever touch or disturb the clothing again. So everything in that hospital was left how it was when they eventually evacuated.
The first patients to arrive into the hospital, it was not inherently obvious to the hospital staff what was happening until they recognized the signs of radiation burns - so all the patients and staff who were initially in the hospital before the explosion became exposed to secondary radiation simply from the radioactive patients coming into the hospital. An effort was made to isolate and "quarantine" the hospital (as best as they could back then) in a way to allow the nurses to continue to work their entire shift. Nurses had to work in short alternating shifts when treating severe cases of radiation exposure to minimize their own exposure. However since the initial patients were severe cases - they died within the first couple of days and weeks - they could only try to manage their pain. The doctors simply put them on high doses of pain meds in an IV drip and observed them from outside the patient rooms.
Staff wore hazmat suits, gloves, etc, although those ended up having little effect in the long run. Much of the hospital staff died from exposure, or were diagnosed with all kinds of cancer that shortened their life expectancy by decades.
Wow thank you for explaining that. Cool information
I feel like if something like this happened again... we wouldn't be able to come together again. the world has been so seperated in recent years that its almost mind blowing.
I'd have to disagree. Through all the shit there are still stories of people giving up their lives for others and helping others.
The thing about humanity is it doesn't let all of us not care. That's how we've survived out of everything in millions of years
It's a work for engineer if it would happen next ;)
It wasn't really the "world" who came together during the crisis, it was the men (and women, in some cases) who were around the area, lived in Pripyat or Belarus, or were just on-duty (firefighters/Medical personnel) when the evacuation and relocation happened. They didn't get any assistance from outside countries considering - as mentioned in PART 1 - they didn't want to admit they screwed up. It wasn't until it started affecting other countries that we even learned about what happened there. It didn't even affect the US in the 80's, so we left Ukraine to figure itself out. It was a lack of understanding how severe the situation actually was and a mandatory -duty- for those who worked there or around there to report to their job(s). Like with Vladimir just doing his job as was expected back then. Unless you live in Ukraine and are speaking about the people there coming together again?

There were actually many many more reasons and actions why this disaster happened. Even before the button was pressed, the disaster wasnt preventable anymore.
the moment they decided to push back the safety test and keep the reactor on low power it was doomed
So many safety protocols were broken and they essentially brought the reactor to a state where it was practically choked and suffocated. So when they went to increase the power and it stopped going up, the reactor was choked with xenon until it started to burn off, then everything went from lowering reactivity to things that increase it and then the power surge that caused them to press AZ-5/A3-5 started to happen. Basically, once they started having the power surge, the reactor was already doomed to fail whether they scrammed or not because it was surging without anything to counter reactivity.
Dude it was soviet garbage. With soviet garbage protocols. It worked until it didn’t.
i love that they're not running around Prypyat, yelling and laughing like a bunch of baboons. they actually wanted to understand what happened and to show it to us through their own eyes.

@@maryclarasimoglou8861 I didn’t know being a hero consisted of doing things not of your own choice or free will but instead because you “belong to the state” (in this case the Soviet Union) and either you do what they tell you to do or they banish you and your entire family to Siberia to freeze the death (if they want to make it quick they just execute you and you entire family and if they want to be a real ass they execute a family member in front of you (probably a child if you have one) to make sure you remember where you stand)
Radiation destroys on a molecular level. Your body is always producing new skin. All the information for making new skin is in your dna. When radiation destroys your dna, it doesnt have that info anymore so your skin just starts to deteriorate. All your cells are destroyed, and your body reacts to it a lot similarly to a burn. It will melt your body from the inside out if you receive to much. It could get to the point to where doctors can't even administer IV pain killers because your arteries and veins just fall apart. Truly one of the worse ways to die. If not THE worse way to die
😢
I remember learning about this in school and how they used lunar rovers to try and push all the graphite back into the reactor but it was so toxic that it completely destroyed the rovers so they had to use men to clear it in 90 second bursts. Also the AZ-5 shutdown button was meant to level out the reactor but at the end of the rods they made graphite tips because it was cheaper witch caused the reactor to explode . It also took them over 30 hours to agree on an evacuation because the meter only showed 3.5 but that was the highest it went on the meter . Basically they then lied to the public’s to cover there backs and stay out of the blame but in the final court case it was exposed that there were still 3 reactors running at that very time that were not yet fixed
Basically the AZ-5 button became a detonator for the core because of the graphite tips the rods had .
I was 6 years old when this happened.. I don’t really remember anything because I was just too young, and since I live in the US, we were not as effected of course, but I have never heard about the heroes who saved the world.. it’s literally bone chilling to think about what could’ve happened.. you would think that the people who literally saved the planet would be celebrated all around the world every year.. but sadly, they are all but forgotten.. thank you Sam and Colby for teaching todays youth about the heroes who saved our world.. for teaching ME too! 😔🙏🏻

Reality is the scariest horror genre. You keep thinking "I can't believe this happened." because you don't want to believe the worst of humanity. You don't want to believe that a country would rather sacrifice its own people than sacrifice its image. You don't want to believe that such egregious human error was rewarded rather than punished. You don't want to believe such a horrifying event can become reality but...reality is often disappointing.

Graphite on the Control rods was the final straw, not the warped tubes, the Graphite when re introduced back into the reactor caused a runaway, which is why the power level hit such a critical level. Its actually really interesting to look into. RBMK Reactors were known to have this flaw, but it was all swept under the rug due to bureaucracy
Not bureaucracy, Soviet desperation. The soviets actively suppressed all the information on the disaster. The control rods in the original design didnt have channels. There was nothing there to be warped by the heat. They still push this lie to this day, so they can blame all of it on that guy.
this^^^^ i just watched that part of the video and i was like noooooo its the graphite tips on the rods
The reactor being so low on power became poisoned with xenon and when the graphite rods entered first to the reactor it caused a sudden reactivity which caused the xenon to react and spike so high the power that the whole chamber and building itself could not hold the steam, the u-235 atoms in result it exploded
I'm so glad you guys made this video I thought I had a good idea of what happened and I never realised the extent and the numbers that were involved. I knew about the people that sacrificed themselves but did not know the number was anywhere near as high as it was.
Such a beautiful video ❤ loved it. And you guyss humor is the best
As someone who was alive, a kid, but alive, when this happened, thank you for educating generations who didn't experience this historic event. I'm very impressed with you guys.
When my mom was young, there was a small nuclear power plant near my hometown in Pennsylvania that had a reactor meltdown. I remember her telling me how everyone in the area was terrified, but never really understood why until watching this series. I knew of Chernobyl, but not enough of how tragic it really was. Insane - and you guys rock for giving a new perspective to so many who probably only knew the very basics like I did.
What happened to the town
@@pixel8122 Nothing, thankfully! From what I understand, it was only a partial meltdown so there wasn't enough gas released to cause any damage to the people or surrounding areas. But this happened a few years before Chernobyl, so people didn't really know what to think and it seemed more disastrous than it was. You can look it up, Three Mile Island. I believe it's still considered the most significant accident in U.S. nuclear power plant history.
My dad was telling me about this I’m about 2 hours from Harrisburg and then I started getting more interested in learning more about Chernobyl and what happened in Pennsylvania
Is it just me who thinks that the radiation they received while here might be the reason that Colby ended up getting diagnosed with cancer?
They're literally in Jurrasic world at 24:10
I am a teacher for infants all the way up to 3 year olds. I can't even imagine what it must have been like for the schools and the little children in chernobyl having to go through drills like that and just having to abandon everything, not knowing what was going to happen. This series has been amazing so far and I can't wait for the next part
I love how respectful and willing to learn you guys are. I learned so much by watching the two videos that you have put out thus far and I love them. Thank you for taking the time to learn rather than just mess around and ignore their warnings ❤️
you guys deserve so much more views, likes, and subs for all the stuff you do
3:15 she said "you can adjust to biger and smaller"
This series is so interesting, possibly the most interesting so far! You guys are killing it! I love that Nate is back too!
15:40 my heart dropped when he took off his mask for a sec
It amazes me how old and retro looking all the controls are. "Its harder to turn your washing machine off" made me laugh.
You guys go above and beyond for your fans I love you guys
I was 15 when this happened, and I remember watching the constant news coverage. It was a scary time. I love that you guys have gone and are telling your generation about this tragedy.
Yes I remember it too. Its so nostalgic to see the news reports and how not many people talk about it anymore.
This story needs to be remembered. We need to learn from these mistakes.
And this is one of the reasons New Zealand became nuclear free
@@sharonp3563 nah that’s not the reason it’s because hydroelectric is enough to produce electricity for the whole country and having one power plant is just over kill
@@JuanTorres-gn2ss huh?
@@sharonp3563 tf you confused about hydro eletric is another way to get power to cities and shit new Zealand doesn’t use nuclear power plants because hydroelectric is enough to power the whole country and a nuclear power plant is just overkill
@@JuanTorres-gn2ss I wasnt confused about becoming nuclear free. I lived through it. I visited the nuclear powered submarine when it arrived in New Zealand. I was with the navy team that went onboard. I was confused by your comment.
We have many hydro stations here. Not just 1
I love how Sam and Colby are risking their lives to tell me people this is really real shit that happend years ago but still need to be telled !
I literally didn't know it existed. Now I'm so thankful
One thing I would like to add to the liquidators that went up several times, everyone who went up there were given a dosimeter that tracked their exposure, but many of the older people who went up there would trade their used dosimeter for the fresh one that a younger liquidator had gotten.
