- Here is Levi Stubbs' performance of "Mean Green Mother From Outer Space" at the 59th Annual Academy Awards, which took place on March 30, 1987. This would be the only time Levi Stubs would perform a song from "Little Shop" live.
The first Oscar nominated song to contain profanity, it had to be edited for the telecast. Because of this, sections of cut lyrics were restored.
This song was Howard Ashman and Alan Menken's first nomination for Best Original Song. The duo would later go in to be nominated for songs from "The Little Mermaid," "Beauty and the Beast," and "Aladdin." - Розваги
I grew up with the movie and I’m going to be honest, I never saw this mans face before and it’s incredibly jarring to hear that voice come out of a human. Sad to hear he died, he clearly had a great stage presence.
damn, I was just enjoying him then read here that he passed. sigh. great voice and a smile like tom jones. RIP
I am thinking Levi was making his Halloween Debut!!!
Oh, nothing to see here...just 1/4 of the LEGENDARY Four Tops! You guys never sang "I Can't Help Myself (Sugar Pie, Honey Bunch)" or "Reach Out I'll Be There?" Those tunes, among others, were cultural staples even as an 80s baby/90s kid. lol
I won't beat up on ya too much, but yeah, Levi Stubbs was a CLASSIC, distinctive vocalist, man. That casting as Audrey II was literally pitch perfect considering Levi was a part of one of the biggest acts from the era depicted in the play & movie. Lots of nods to Motown throughout Little Shop & I think that's a big part of why it connects so well no matter what generation you're from. Motown is just infectious!
RIP Levi! 🐐👑💐
He was Mother Brain from "Captain N: The Game Master" and it's said that he really enjoyed doing this role.
omg, he was LEVI STUBBS OF THE LEGENDARY FOUR TOPS!!!!??? LOL
That film wouldn’t have been the same without that fantastic voice
The Audrey II dancing in the background is adorable ❤️
I know right
cheriblossom983 yeah. Mostly due to the fact that he voiced her
Then again, Audrey II has always been adorable.
SuperMarioJustin4 you are not wrong lol
Aw Audrey 2 in the background is too cute
This is probably just a hint of the fun that Stubbs had with this role!
Imagine being there on the set of the movie. If I build a time machine, you wanna go? Lol
I found out he was the voice of Mother Brain from Captain N The Game Master years ago. I just started re-watching Little Shop of Horrors too.
R.I.P. Levi Stubbs. (You will be missed 😢)
Levi Stubbs sang the HELL out of that song.
The first and only villain song to ever be nominated for the Academy Award for Best Original Song.
Don’t forget “Blame Canada”! I think these are the only two. Lol
@@Little1Cave That's not a villain song because I don't consider the parents in South Park as "villains".
@@AlexMcGillvrey Sheila had the US government arrest Terrance and Philip and wage war on Canada...all over a cartoon movie. She and the Mothers Against Canada movement were the source of most of the conflict of the movie.
@@Little1Cave I thought Saddam Hussein was the main villain in South Park Bigger, Longer, and Uncut.
@@Little1CaveIronically both songs are the only Oscar nominated songs to have swearing
Even when Levi went sang by himself, he still never left the Tops behind.
I wish this song had won. Not that the actual winner was bad or anything.
no, that's 3 time nominated academy awards .😔😔😔😔😔😔😔😔😔
The best song never does win.
@@youthfulcurmudgeon3627 Except the same songwriters ended up winning Best Song twice after this for "Under the Sea" and "Beauty and the Beast." Don't tell me those didn't deserve it.
Sad Howard Ashman passed away at the height of his career.
An amazing live version
@@DisneyFanatic2364 What if he didn't? That could've been magnificent.
I love that he does the rap that was cut from the film. I wish this was added into the stage show. At least they restored the original ending for the film.
Yeah it is sad that they went with a happy ending for the film but the original didn't gel well with the test audience so they changed it as well as cutting out a dream sequence but hey they had to come under budget.
The rap is in the film, but they only used two of the three verses in the original book (the one they cut is in this clip). "You know I don't come from no black lagoon... I'm from past the stars and beyond the moon. You can keep the bat, keep the It, keep the creature, they don't mean shit!"
Great guy, gifted voice!... always humble.. the voice of the Four Tops, yet never wanted to rise about the others in billing but remained equal.... I wish I could have met him...
That Audrey 2 puppet is priceless. 👏😁
Best male singer to ever come out of Motown....ever. ❤
So fun!! The audience seems much more uptight than current Oscar audiences...it’s a shame this is such a fun song!
What will it be like if today's Oscar audiences are always much more uptight?
Left out "tough titty". 🙂
The song had to be edited to not contain any swears because it was being broadcast live on television.
Everybody always goes on and on about Rick Moranis and Steve Martin in this movie, but I think Levi Stubbs hardly gets any credit. Awesome as those actors are, we’re here for the plant, and Stubbs freak’n kills it in the role. Heck, look at how much fun he’s having here, preforming a song that actually won an Oscar that year! RIP Levi. May you rest somewhere that’s green.
best puppeteering i have ever seen before or since
rest in peace, Levi. you were absolutely perfect for Audrey II. thank you.
This was an incredible performance! Viewers at the time were disappointed the Best Song nominees didn't each get separate performances. Instead, they were all forced into a single montage, of which this was definitely the highlight. The audience was actually very much into it, by the way, with reviewers noting that had the award been decided during the show, "Mean Green Mother" would have won the trophy hands down.
I would've liked it if "Mean Green Mother from Outer Space" took home the award for that ceremony.
@@Joshua_Quinzel_Isley yeah, but it lost to Berlin's "take my breath away." From Top Gun.
I love the Four Tops. They'll never be the same without Levi Stubbs. My only nitpick about this is he should've worn a green sequined jacket instead of pink.
that's one of a nominated of academy awards of best original song.😀😀😀😀😀😀
That's red, fool!
Pink works - Levi is literally Audrey II's mouthpiece! 👄
THE KING HIMSELF
I remember watching this on tv at age 9 and I was so excited to hear the swears in this song but to no avail 😂
Mr. Stubbs was the perfect choice for the voice of Audrey 2. Such an amazing voice.
You are missed sir, RIP ❤
Menken and Ashman’s music is just too good!!
R.I.P Levi Stubbs.
I love Levi stubs
A lot of talent has crossed the stage of the Academy Awards. The most talented, by far, is the great Levi Stubbs. Okay. Fred Astaire too.
Don't forget Howard Ashman.
Awesome song!! Rip Levi Stubbs and Howard Ashman; you two will never be forgotten
Best Audrey II. Hands down.
Change my mind
Uh, Louise?
He's great. Levi's wonderful don't get me wrong. But I'm a hometown St. Louis girl and my favorite Twoey is none other than Mr. Muny, the Sultan of Summer in St. Louis, the man without whom.the musical St. Louis season would be incomplete:
Ken Page (AKA Oogie Boogie from Nightmare Before Christmas, Old Deuteronomy from the original CATS production, The Cowardly Lion from The Wiz etc, The Alligator from All Dogs Go To Heaven etc.)
He performs every year in the outdoor musical theater, The Muny in St. Louis during the summer and it's always a blast to see him.
@@julieporter7805 my favorite is Cheryl freeman as tragedy muse
Love this song. A truly badass bop.
I think the only thing that could make this even better is that if he backed towards the Audrey II in the background and it ate him just as he would finish singing the I. Am. Bad part :D
Lol. The irony would be he’d be eating himself then considering Levi Stubbs is his voice.
Mean green mother from outer space is my favorite song from little shop of horrors
Mine too.
It would be a cool official inclusion to the original play.
i like steve martin doing be a dentist
That is so cool to see this song performed live. Great track.
OMG! I was born in '83 and I grew up watching Little Shop of Horrors as a kid. This is the first time I've ever seen the real "Audrey 2" perform this! 🙌 I never knew it was the singer from the Four Tops all along! I love their music! 🙌✨ 80s baby!
He looks
Exactly like I expected honestly
Dayum
It was way more innovative than Take My Breath Away
That's what won? Barf.
Ugh! That song is boring as hell, and its use in the movie was beyond repetitive to the point that it was laughable. 👎🏻👎🏻
Considering that it was in the movie, Top Gun, I wonder if the Church of Scientology has something to do with that song winning...
UPDATE: Turns out Scientology had nothing to do with it, as Tom Cruise joined the scam/cult in 1990.
That wasnt even the most innovative for Berlin. It often will go to the one that becomes a pop hit because all the voters heard it.
@@brettmastema7056 I like No More Words and Riding on the Metro way better.
OMG! How have I never seen this before? This is amazing.
This song has a very Rocky Horror feel to it, particularly Sweet Transvestite
I’m in love with this song!!! We’re doing LSOH as our uni show this year and I’m gutted cause they cut this song (I’m playing Audrey II)
Technically, this song isn't part of the stage version to begin with. It was originally composed for the movie.
They did whaaaaa?
My school did this show too I was the puppeteer and voice for Audrey 2 I never sweat so much in my life inside that puppet
When the Oscar was the greatest show every year in TV
“Mean Green Mother From Outer Space”
Music by Alan Menken
Lyrics by Howard Ashman
Performed by Levi Stubbs & Chorus
©️1986, 1987 The Geffen Company/AMPAS
My childhood just flashed before my eyes. Wow!!!!!
Watching the plant in the background bopping was adorable
This should have won the oscar.
WHY ISN'T HIS JACKET GREEN?
The Audrey Puppert seems to be enjoying Levi's performance.😊😊
I bet this song would have been added to the Broadway revival if it won.
the stage version's pacing would be kinda messed up if they included this.
@@notsusan Then they could have put it in the Curtain Call like what UK shows did in 2016 and 2018.
MAGNÍFICA PELÍCULA ACTORES, CANTANTES, PRODUCCIÓN, GUION EN FIN Y SUPER COMICA ❤❤❤❤❤
Brings a test to my eye everytime I watch this... There will not be another Levi Stubbs. This was his role right here. He played the hell out of it and stole the movie!
RIP Levi, Appreciated, remembered, and never forgotten! ❤️
The first cussing song to be nominated.
RIP Levi Stubbs in Heaven.
Even though I prefer the more refined movie version of this song I can’t deny that there’s some fun charm to the live version he gives here.
Levi Stubbs Walks Weird At 2:27
He was grooving a while walking away
too bad this song wasn't in the play.
Abonanno24601 feasably you could put it in the play pretty easily
Peter Bauer Yeah but thats super illegal to change the script
Yeah, but I don't think it would be the same without Levi Stubbs's vocal.
Peter Bauer It doesn’t work in the show. It’s a long song to watch nothing but a giant puppet with no eyes...
@neutral name It's never been added to any professional production, only illegally added to community or amateur ones.
IM JUST A MEAN GREEN MOTHER, FROM OUTER SPACE AND IM BAD!!!!🌺
Levi stubbs will always be the best potrayel of audrey 2 ever he just owned the role
wow still my favorite song
Never seen this mans face, but it's exactly what I imagined.
This brings me so much joy😅 RIP Levi🙏🏽🌹🕊
This guy was awesome!
Just now saw the movie, facinated with the Voice
How the hell didn’t this song win?! Explain this to me Academy!
"Take My Breath Away".
That transition at the end, WOW.
The plant of super mario is singing.🥀🎶
Just saw the movie today. This song is so catchy xD
He is so hot!
I karaoke this song occasionally. Always KNOCKS THE HOUSE DOWN!!!
Wow what a handsome man 🥰
I’ve always wanted to see a live vocal performance thank you
Rest in peace, Audrey two😢😢😢
Audrey 2 in the background looks cute
Cute?! It's a mean green mother from outer space
@@kivrinsagchannel791 they should of got more shots of it. Because when little shop was on that Thanksgiving parade thing (I'm not from America), they got got a few shots of the puppet
This is SPECTACULAR!!!!
Can we love bernadette peters for leading in a singing plant
First Oscar song to feature what they considered “bad” language, but compared to other songs today, pretty tame
Legendary 👏👏👏😊.
this is everything !!! 💙💙💙
Loved this so hard!!!
This is awesome I was in little shop of horrors as a sophomore in high school
He has just as much style here as his mean green counterpart!
This song should had won
Awesome show
This was performed on my birthday 😳
Happy 1 day late birthday
this is great
Omg!!! So much fun!!!
levi Stubbs did good actor of all time. 😔😔😔😔😔😔😔😔😔😔😔😔😔😔😔😔😔😔😔😔😔😔😔
I always pictured the voice actor was..larger. Beautiful voice on a beautiful man.
I love it
Omg so cool finally got to see who did the voice in the movie I was in the musical senior yr of high school That was the first time I ever heard of the show and now it’s one of my favorites I even have the movie on dvdThe puppet of Audrey to dance in the background was too stinking cute
Nice song keep sharing
This is still the best
シャドバの動画からきました〜
めっちゃ陽気な歌なので体が踊りだしてしまいます笑
Yesssssssssss
I like the puppet in the background
sonic23233 ditto
Shots of shown more of it
Amazing
For those who know the song and might be wondering what happened to the last part of the verse.
This song being nominated had some controversy because of the word $h!t, and "many" didn't want it nominated because of that.
Ruben Studdard could play and sing this as Audrey II in a new Audio production of Little Shop.
Audrey two is amazing
I didn't know that voice came from, the legendary "R&B" group, The 4 Tops. I'd think our predecessors knew better.
1:25 and 2:17 And AAAA, EAAAM,
BEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEAAAHHHHHD
Of all the lyrics they had to change, they changed the best of the whole song: "Gonna trash yo ass, gonna rock this place!"
Does he say "you in deep dish trouble man"?😂
TheatreisLife2017 you can’t beat this trouble man, is the actual line
"You in deep dish trouble, dad." is the actual line. It was a mishearing.
there is another version of this song, the whole song...this is just a short cleaned up version for tv. check out the other version on youtube. it's great!
I'm probably going to have this song stuck in my head for the rest of the week and to think I only found this song because it appeared with search results for the Muppet Show theme song (which Audrey II would be a creature because it looks more realistic than a muppet)
Frank Oz directed the movie. He's perhaps best known for creating muppets like Miss Piggy, Fozzie Bear and Animal. He also created characters like Bert and Ernie for Sesame Street.
This or 'Somewhere Out There' should've won that year...
He was by far the BEST Audrey II
