  • There are some pretty unique peppers in this video. I'll show you about 6 different pepper projects. I have about a dozen more that didn't make it into the video because of timing. Most of those have already been harvested. I have a couple of 6 way crosses that have already been harvested. Those should produce a crazy number of different phenotypes.

      Glad to hear you had a great year for it. It was a little toasty here during August. We got up to 111, and 108 a couple of days. The peppers coasted right through that though. Doing well here. Hope you and your family are doing well also.

    Jim, I love seeing your fun pepper projects, especially the seedless mutant plant. Was that the only mutant pepper that didn't produce seeds?
    We've had several hard freezes here, and my garden has been kaput for several weeks. However, I still need to plant my garlic and spring flowering bulbs. The more mature (aka OLDER) I get, the longer it takes me to get things done. Apparently, there is less go in my giddy-up. 🐎🤣
    I hope you two lovebirds have a fun and relaxing weekend! ~Margie🤗💐🦋

      Thanks Margie! That one plant was the only one that was seedless. A couple were pepperless, so technically they were seedless too :) Lol, I know all about how maturity can make things take longer. I just got my garlic in the ground yesterday. It's raining today, so that didn't work out too bad. Have a great weekend!

    Those are very interesting pepper projects. Those mutant plants with no seeds and no peppers are also very interesting. I'm curious as to how that happened. I'm sure you will figure it out.
    I didn't do my cross between the scotch bonnet and jalapeno, ole arthritis got me good in the knee, I had to take a few days off of garden work. The scotch bonnets are now developing into peppers .

    Good Morning Jim - yes the frost is coming and we are done for another year outdoors. So unusual that a pepper plant would have no seed with which to reproduce another year and a plant that produced no peppers. I am in the process of moving some production indoors for this winter and wonder if you have any tips to avoid common issues or plant varieties that don't do well. Hope you are continuing to mend and have a blessed weekend..

    • @MidwestGardener

      Good morning Sue! Thanks! I don't have too many tips for growing indoors. I think some folks over water and over fertilize. Other than that, it usually goes pretty smoothly.

    A semi-unrelated question -- I'm still trying to figure out the best time to harvest an Odapeno. They stay purple a surprisingly long time, then get an interesting assortment of white and woody colors mixed in, I think one made it to red but that seems to take an eternity.

    • @MidwestGardener
      @MidwestGardener  6 місяців тому

      In my opinion, the best time to harvest them is when they aren't quite fully red, with just a little darkness on the tip. It does take them quite a while to ripen sometimes. I have a few going indoors right now.

    Yeah i love when this happens, i call them tentacle peppers 😅, i find them more in annuums and they do tend to be sterile, however when it happens on capsicum chinense peppers usually have good seeds, theres a couple varieties that make them on purpose, like the "rimmerhus fun strain pepper" and the "Hulk scorpion pepper"

    That first pepper plant is wild looking, we are about to get a bit freeze here also. The third looks similar to a Buena Mulata! The pepperless pepper plants are super wild! I wonder what would happen if you grew them indoor, maybe you could get them to flower. Seriously you have some wild genetics going on in that garden of yours!
    I'm excited to see more of your crosses old timer, keep on keepin on!

  • @swinkmeister

    I had an interesting thing happen the first time I tried growing ornamental peppers. Instead of producing seeds, my uchu cream plants produced a bunch of tinier peppers around the original pepper. I think that took a ton of energy, and the tiny plant didn't last very long. Super cool, but also a situation where I sadly couldn't save seeds. It seems like some kind of weird mutation from what I could figure out, but some of the stuff I found said it could have been due to environmental factors. Not too sure, and I don't think I successfully grew any of the other seeds from that pack of seeds to find out.

    • @MidwestGardener
      @MidwestGardener  6 місяців тому

      I guess some mutations or genetic combinations aren't meant to survive.

  • @davidniemi6553
    @davidniemi6553 6 місяців тому +1

    Thank you for the update. Of the seedless mutant dark peppers, I thought I saw a red one in the back of the plant, was that from the same plant? Black and purple are typically just as unripe colors as green, so they might ripen to red.
    How cold is it going to get where you are? Here we are forecast for 30-31F around the same time -- I expect many of my peppers and even one tomato variety will survive that without damage but I will protect the most important plants in case it is colder than forecast. Or course there could be a harder freeze a few days later, such is November.
    I am attempting to overwinter the best Midwest Midnight Eclipse I have, as well as saving seeds from it.
    I tried to grow Matt's Xion Mutant this year, but while one was an OK ornamental, it did not have the mutant leaves.
    From my hybrid experience, Annuum x Annuum crosses have a high rate of success (too high). But many early lineages of Tabaneros (which are a Chinense x Frutescens interspecies cross) had few to no seeds to the point of dying out. The ones that make it through are often the really interesting ones. Of course one of the attractions of Tabaneros is they have few, small seeds and are nice to eat with little or no processing, so that is a tradeoff.

    • @MidwestGardener
      @MidwestGardener  6 місяців тому

      Yes that was a red ripe one on the back of the plant. I've already harvested a number of ripe ones from that plant. They were all seedless. I think we are suppose to be near freezing tonight with a high temperature in the 30s. I can understand how the interspecific crossed would be low on seeds. Few seeds would definitely be a plus eating.

      I thought of that or overwintering indoors. I'm not sure what the goal would be though, if it is seedless. Today I'm going to check every pepper. If I can find even one pepper with a seed, I'll try to find room for it even though I have very limited space.
