@@StoneCottageHome from todays visit we were able to see several ideas using colors and patterns that we like. I have been adding some thrifted art to our home and decluttering decor to bring a more curated look to our home. We are not too keen on a lot of clutter. The English cottage is most definitely our favorite of all the styles you shared.
We look forward to seeing more updates as you do them in your home. Our next room to update is our main floor bath. The tub, toilet and sink are original to the house and have to stay, at least for now. They are black so I’m trying to find ideas to best suit them.

Probably the best cottage style overview video out there! These different styles, while related, have distinctions that you so accurately point out. I'm drawn to all of them, but I think my use of china and plates as decor and wall art puts my style most closely in the English cottage category. I also relate to the "fullness of stuff" as you said! Thanks for this lovely video!

Thanks for this video. You helped me realize that my style/decor most resembles a modern cottage style; as I prefer less clutter, fewer patterns, and clean lines, though my decor still has a warm, cozy feeling. I also have a lot of farmhouse and coastal elements in my decor.

Just found you via the collab with She Holds Dearly and a few others! I'm so glad I did! This video was such perfect timing for me (even though you filmed in April). We are adding onto our home, and my plans are to mostly decorate in the French Country Cottage style. Mostly neutrals with blue and white. But in my dining room, I want to incorporate more color with all my beautiful depression glass and floral china patterns! I thought about keeping the walls very neutral and even the furniture neutral as well so I can incorporate color. I'm hoping it will all blend together well. Now, back to binge-watching your videos!😍 P.S. This is one of the best videos about these styles that I have watched - great job!!

Oh this was fun. Do not know why you quit showing up for me. All was ticked. But I have enjoyed catching up. My house is very small but it is pretty and comfortable. It makes it fun to stay home and enjoy it when I can't get out. I never tire of it. I love each piece as I remember where and how I got it. A mix of English and French cottage. Many treasures from English but mostly French Flea markets, Brocantes. My health is not great now so doubt I will travel again. I do enjoy seeing all these gorgeous styles and ideas from the comfort of my sofa. Thank you.

I like the Irish cottage style. It's alot more natural and less fussy.
Another channel that has a very unique style kinda french rustic neutral tones is Sarah's October Home. Her recent bathroom makeover, and master bedroom makeover is really pretty, and kinda her own, but none the less very pretty. Most of her items are thrifted, which makes it nice.

I have the same trouble as the viewer described in thier letter. I love the old world style, a bit of French and English country. But I also love just plain vintage so I end up with things that dont define the style that I would like to see in my home setting. Not to mention I constantly change my mind about pieces I buy. I may think I love them when I purchase them but in a matter of months I look around my home and it is full of things I wish I hadn't bought.😔 I thought this was happening because I was buying pieces that were in need of repair and do the refurbishments myself to stay with in my budget. So I decided to spend more on a couple of pieces in hopes I would stay in love with them but eventually I grew less fond of those pieces as well. I so desperately want to get to a point in my home decor that I'm done with the designing and can just enjoy cleaning and swapping out seasonal candlesticks and enjoy the fruits of my labor. But with the route I'm on..... well I'm just lost! Lol

Believe it or not, this is a common experience with those honing their design style. There is a period of experimentation where mistakes are made. I've went through this stage as well & was glad the items were thrifted! A couple tips that may help you pass through this phase is first, to really pin down what you like. This can be done by creating a board of favorites on Pinterest. See if there is a pattern to what you're choosing. Note which items stick around the longest. Second, when you buy that "perfect" thing & it doesn't end up working then ask yourself "why". By answering this question you will begin to spot things you would've bought, but now know why they don't work for you. Lastly, be patient with yourself, as people we will continue to change throughout our lives ~ as will our decor tastes. You'll still make mistakes now & again, and your style will continue to evolve. Hope this helps!

I love Modern cottage because of the minimalism and calm, while maintaining a warm, comforting, elegance, but most of the inspo I find for it either looks like 17:34 or too contemporary, when I'm looking for something more like 17:43 or 7:06. With earth tones and dark wood. Oh well, I'm probably just going to use traditional English Cottage inspo and just pair it down a little. Your guide was so helpful. :)

This has been SUCH a helpful and valuable video!!! We are remodeling right now and I’ve never had the luxury of designing and decorating my own home. Thanks. I am redecorating my interior and back yard to incorporate elements of the modern cottage (No Shabby Chic!!) to my modern trac-style neighborhood home (KB Builder, Model 2502). I hope to add a 4-season enclosed patio. Unfortunately. I have 8' ceilings and a narrow living space due to lot size and reorientation of interior space, but these elements have provided me with some design cues to start my interior design work.
Thank you for sharing your research. I'd absolutely love to have a big library full of those English cottage books. Currently only about a dozen are on my self. Hehehe. Oh, love the way your tiny bathroom turned out!

Rugged romance! Romance/feminine in white furniture, cabriole legs and tufting. Rugged/masculine in cool medium toned distressed/ashy woods (dusty blue and antique brass pulls it together nicely with the princessy feel). The only prints I care for are like "cozy line home fashions vintage rose quilt" that has a vertical rose print wallpaper style side so that's another point for french style. Lavender or pops of purple is one way I like to bridge the elegant and rugged too. Mysterious masculine at times. A modern/peaceful element with one main wall hanging be it a tapestry, wreath or picture of some kind that sets the mood or message for the space.

I was eagerly awaiting this video and you did not disappoint! I now better understand the differences between the various cottage styles. My home is currently a mix of all of these styles, I think. I definitely enjoy a more scaled back version of cottage as too many patterns and too many colors and too many items in a space aren't relaxing to me, but modern cottage is just a bit too austere to me. I have a lot of light wood, rattan, and blues and greens in my home so in that sense I know I love coastal cottage, but lately I'm loving everything French country cottage and feel myself being pulled in that direction (LOVE Courtney Allison's blog!) I think one thing I took away from this video is that it's OK to mix your cottage styles? I would like to ask specifically for tips on mixing woods. As I said I have a lot of light wood in my home, but I love pops of darker vintage wood too. A video about mixing wood colors and furniture finishes would be very helpful!

One of the best features of all cottage styles is the flexibility they offer. Your way of scaling back to the core of the style has given you the freedom to mix more styles. The fun is in the mixing! @@StoneCottageHome Hi Rachel! Most of my furniture & soft furnishings are neutral in color. So, it acts as a "quiet" backdrop. As I add in the different styles in, I make sure they are in the same color family and theme. Is there such a thing as transitional cottage style? Lol, I hope that make sense. 😊 Kind regards, Bobbie.

I think if you don’t mix it up a bit any of these styles can start looking like a museum . You can start trading the cosines for perfection. I have a little framed sign I made for my house that says ….. I collect the things I love and they live happily together.

Absolutely fabulous question Miss Charis!
This is an area of research I've but begun to tap into so there is much I don't know, but here's what I've noticed. From the exterior the overall impression of a cottage is one of quaint, simple welcome that will evoke more of an "aw, how homey" feeling versus a "wow, that's amazing" response. Cottages aren't grand. The roof line is simple with few angles. The building materials are natural, such as wooden beams and stone, although cedar shake and brick can easily assume the cottage look. The idea is to disguise size, and give a feeling of permanence as if the building has always been there. This concept is great since it does allow for the larger homes we are accustomed to today. Also on the exterior, I've noticed there is little to no overhang of the roof, or the roofline is quite low - as in the thatched roof. To learn more I would suggest a search on Pinterest & Instagram of English cottage exteriors.
For cottage interiors the rooms are smaller, can be of irregular size, with charming "nooks". You won't see the open concept style, or large kitchen islands. Again you will see quality natural materials (wood floors & beams, brick, stone, and terra cotta, or slate tile). I hope this helps! Let me know if you have further questions & have a lovely day!🌹

I would like to see a whole video on cottage fireplace/mantle ideas...for those of us who have boring, standard or modern fireplaces who want to transform them into a more cottage look. Another could be staircases, entrance doors, etc... I enjoy your videos!
