Good morning Rachel. My love of all things old was fueled by 2 of my Aunts who lived in New England. As a little girl I was interested in how their homes were furnished and yes I was allowed to touch. As a grown woman I am drawn to the primitive style. When the time came to start making a house a home, I found a magazine that offered authenticity in decorating in that style. I cut out the articles that interested me and began a folder of them. When the time came to build our saltbox home, I was ready. Oh should mention that I am an 80yr old woman who still loves to shop in her own home and reinvent my decor. Thanks Rachel, always get good comments and ideas from you!!!

I’m also an older lady that still enjoys and appreciates home decor - my style is also country prim style and appreciate authenticity even though I have had to blend in some reproduction style pieces and allow for comfort and functionality. It’s nice to see a comment from someone older that still enjoys decor

Dear sweet Rachel. I too am 80 plus now and follow your every posting. I love everything you do, and am so inspired to get out there and go thrifting. I live in an apt and don't have a lot of room, so I'm limited in some things. But, what I do have, I love. The English cottage look is my hearts desire. I'm working on it. Thank you for everything you do.
I love my collection of teapots 🫖, and wish I hadn't but the leather chair from Pier One. I much prefer fabric, or even a good wicker one.
Oh how I go on...Thank you again for bringing us along on your journey!

I found your channel a few days ago and have spent some time watching several of your decorating videos. I love how you use the word "cultivate" and it has really impacted my thinking about my little home. I have always loved antique stores and have been applying the idea of using thrift stores with a discerning eye for a majority of my shopping for my home. I will branch out to antique stores more, now that I have a clearer vision of what I want my home to look and feel like. My daughter is currently serving as the Arizona Rose. She competed at the Rose of Tralee Festival in County Kerry this past August. She is going back to Ireland for a brief visit and I've asked her to find either an Irish lace table cloth or a pair of Irish lace curtains for me. I'm excited to see what she can find with help from her Rose Sister in Galway! . Part of my style journey involves incorporating my heritage into my home decor. :)

      Good morning Miss Cynthia!
I'm glad you've found useful concepts to apply in your home. Doesn't it feel good to have a fairly solid idea of what you want and like for you home, then get it for a great price?! It's also nice to know you've saved money in enough areas that you can responsibly spend more on other pieces from the antique store. The Irish lace sounds lovely! Thanks for stopping by and sharing!

Hi Rachel! Thank you for your video. I love the cozy way your home is decorated. I also love looking for old books. I was so happy to see the classic titles on many of your collection. I always feel so disappointed when people turn their books backwards so you can’t see the titles. I feel robbed of an opportunity to know them better! Or horror of horrors they buy old books in bulk and promote the fact you never have to read them!! One thing I’ve admired is you amazing art collection. I really don’t seem to find anything I like as much as yours so I’ve been trying to focus in on that when I shop. I also appreciate the fact that you focus on making your home a happy place for your husband as well. Looking forward to your next video!

I'm an artist and 78 yo. My tastes have evolved over the years... Having inherited furniture from my grandmothers and Aunts, I have been attracted to more things built in the 1800's to 1940's. Also my husbands mother left him a couple of oak pieces from the 80's. I have blended it all together with art work from myself and my friends, antiques and thrifted things. I have a floral carpet in the living room with two shades of blue, maroon, pale ecru and a sort of light coral. The blue repeats all over the house. Maroon and pink in florals in bedrooms. And my office in a sort of masculine look, paintings, darker colors and my easel. I like so many different things and have inherited such a mixture. The name Granny Chic has become poplular and describes my home perfectly... I am Granny Chic.

I watched this while getting my ironing done this morning and it helped to remember some important things in my decor. I have a tendency to scatter things I love throughout my home but I often wonder why it doesn’t make a statement or have the impact I am after. This was an excellent refresher course for me and so timely as I change things around and add spice to my decor for fall. All of a sudden my little hamster wheel in my mind had been greased and started spinning like crazy and I remembered how much I love my brass and gold pieces for autumn and in less than 5 minutes I had to stop and draw out a beautiful centerpiece for my dining table. I am using that thought to bring cohesiveness to all I put in my dining room and to freshen up old pieces with gold paint to pull it all together. You always work magic on me, Rachel, with your sweet voice and your contagious excitement and your knowledge. I thank you so much for being YOU.✨❤️✨

Well I just love this and I just started watching decorating shows like 3 days ago and you are my favorite.
I really like all your ideas and the way you explain things and then I think to myself but I have a puppy and I have kitties (and kitties ruined furniture and baskets and all kinds of things.)
So it's hard for me to know what I can and can't do.
I feel like my house is messy looking and that's not what I want. I want it to be clean and nice and homey/cozy.
So I'm going to continue to try and watch and learn.
I really love the dishes and I really love the red dishes the most.
Well I also really loved that table and the long basket in the ottoman and I love the way you said to make lists and keep things in mind and colors that go together and start smaller and expensive things. You just have so much common sense along with the wonderful sense of decorating.
    Thank you

About my own tips and mistakes: almost two years ago, I was faced with a COMPLETE home decoration project literally from the ground up. I had no major pieces of furniture, not even a bed! But I knew I wanted a cottage-style home, and, although I like other styles, I had to learn to focus *hard* on where I was really going. For example, I was swooning over a robin's egg blue sofa, but opted instead for a cream colored sofa with vintage lines because it would be more versatile. I'm glad I did, as now I know I can add pillows and throws to change the mood of the room, or to observe the seasons. I couldn't have done that if I'd have lost focus and given in to my impulse. In fact, I'd say that every one of my design "fails" happened because I lost focus!
I'd say that patience and reflection are also a valuable skill to cultivate when decorating. I tried very hard to avoid "impulse buys" because I didn't want to waste money on items I wasn't able to return. Sometimes, when a piece is right, you just know. In all other cases, if you feel any hesitancy at all, *trust your gut feeling* and think about it for a day. Often, your initial impression is the correct one!
I think the most difficult thing I've had to learn is SCALE: what's too big or too small for my space (the main rooms in my 1927 cottage have 11' high ceilings, so this was especially difficult to learn!) And even more confusing is that what may look correct in one room looks incorrect in another because of a difference in scale of the pieces around it.
I think your tip about splurging on a more expensive piece of furniture to build a room around is very good advice. I did this in all my rooms and it really helped me to get my "focus".
One last tip: nearly *everyone* has relatives who want to get rid of old decor items. Some of my most favorite "finds" have been in my sister's cottage basement, or my Mother's storage closet. Don't hesitate to call your relatives and ask if they have any pieces they don't want! You'd be surprised how eager many people are to get rid of "clutter." As the old saying goes: "one person's trash is another person's treasure."

    • @StoneCottageHome
      @StoneCottageHome  2 роки тому +3

      Good afternoon, Miss Suzanne
What wonderful feedback! I too have had the same experience with impulse purchases, and have learned to really observe my own reactions to things. Sometimes it's the perfect piece, I bring it home and it fits seamlessly. When I began decorating I made lots of "impulse" mistakes as I learned what we truly liked and used. There is also an art to getting things that go together.
Scale is also important! You have the fun of balancing high ceilings,. On the other hand, I've seen a British designer place a large four poster bed in a small room. Not only did it work, but it elevated the room and added tan element of unexpected pleasure.
You're spot on about having focus. For me color is a big player. It can be hard to turn down wonderful pieces just because the color isn't in your palette. Even though this seems restrictive it actually gives more freedom as you can then use your items in so many more ways and places. Thank you for sharing!
      P. S. I'm considering making a video on mixing design styles. What tips, challenges, questions would you have? I'd love to hear your thoughts.🌹

    My biggest decorating challenge is marrying two different styles that I love;
English Country & Rustic. I gravitate towards log homes with natural elements like wood and stone. But I also love English Country styles. I’m trying to pull off marrying these two decorating styles and have it look really good. I don’t want it to look like I couldn’t decide between these two styles. I want to use both styles and have it flow like a cohesive design. This has been my biggest challenge in decorating our home.

      Good news on two fronts!
First, the cottage style is an easy-going adaptable look. Second, there are many "rustic" elements in the country cottage style, like wood floors, rough hewn beams, and brick or stone walls. You would probably enjoy Ros Byam Shaws' book: "Perfect English Farmhouse." It has a genteel roughness that feels comfortable and yet pretty. Also, you might enjoy exploring my cottage style boards on Pinterest. I'd love to hear what you come up with!

Hi Rachel! We moved out of State to a home twice as big as our last.. This new home had been in the market for almost a year , it’s required much work. With all the beautiful custom molding my husband has done, that has helped with design direction, the challenge was that we really had no furnishings other than bedrooms furniture as we left much of our pieces behind to sell, and some were given to our daughter. It has taken me 8 years and I’m still working on my home.
I’ve purchased many items at estate sales and some on marketplace, our town is not very equipped with good thrift stores for furnishings . I have a cross between English and French traditional styling .. at least my home doesn’t echo anymore.. My gallery wall was inspired by your video , so thank you very much! I am a fan ☺️💕

This is what a home should feel like.

When we bought our first house I saw a blue and white lamp in a store and I fell in love with it. I still remember how much it cost, $50 and that was a lot of money for me back in 1975 when I didn't even have much furniture yet, so I passed but I kept thinking about it. I set a little money aside here and there and after a cash birthday gift I went back and bought it. I have been married for 49 years, we are on our eighth home and I still have that lamp. It ended up being the inspiration for my decor in my whole first house and I learned that a small thing like a painting, lamp or pillow can be the inspiration for a whole room.

@@StoneCottageHome Oh my goodness. I think that would be awesome to have a video on mixing design styles. I love elements of several different styles (French country, French cottage, English country/cottage, etc🥰) but it’s hard to edit and incorporate different elements to make it feel cohesive. So I think that’s where I struggle (one area at least😁) and your insight would be greatly appreciated. 🥰 I also wanted to let you know that you are inspiring me to make a gallery wall. Yesterday, my husband and I taped craft paper to the wall to create just the right sized template and now I will lay the template on the floor so I can arrange the pictures to see how I want them, trace their outlines, number the backs of the pictures and on the template as well and then hang it back up, then hang up the pictures! (If my description makes any sense. Lol!) Anyway, I so greatly appreciate you sharing ideas and inspiring us all. You are truly a blessing.

My husband describes my home as "the treasure hunter look" I have been collecting for about 4 years. So many regrets not purchasing certain items because I of trying to be a responsible buyer and going for a certain look. So now if I spend to much time contemplating whether I should buy something or not I just buy it. If it is within my budget of course. I always find unique and creative ways to put my finds in my home. I don't have a particular style. My home is just made up of items that I love. I love busts sculptures, original art work, China, lamps, vases. I collect vintage disco balls. I just love my house now that I let go trying to make my house look like someone else's. When you buy or already have furniture with scratches I love to use Old English Scratch Cover for dark woods, and permanent black Sharpie for deep scratches, you apply it and immediately run your finger over it, it works really well.

Rachel I just love how you are so thorough in your research, and then relaying what you know. Preloved items have always been a passion of mine, and I've learnt that if I can't afford exactly what I want, I swap/buy up until I can. Usually this will involve restoring what I have so that I can make enough money to finally purchase the antique I want. This, I have found, has helped me learn a lot about antique items. Researching how to restore items and what is a repro or authentic. The thrill of the hunt is such an adrenaline rush. Finally being able to find exactly what you want. I love pink/red transfer ware, but have always wanted the one made in the 1800's. Well you know how expensive it is and I was nearly ready to get the newer ones when I was lucky enough to find a whole set for FREE on FB marketplace. I did have to say what I was going to do with the set, but the lovely lady was happy that her great great grandmother's set would stay together. I pair it with my pink depression glass but I'm thinking of starting a green set to go with it 😊
Thank you again for another awesome episode, much love Liana xx

@@StoneCottageHome Hi Rachel! Thank you for asking me about mixing design styles. My home is much like yours, I love English Cottage too! You have a great gift in spotting baskets, since I am from the mountains of Idaho, how about incorporating a touch of vintage wilderness using baskets and nature? Irish linen is another of my favorites, as is vintage flannel. You could make an outdoors vignette using these. For example: My husbands office is filled with old lithographs from the mountains, dreamy cabins, wildlife.
And, old canteens, fishing lurers, old fly fishing baskets used for storage. I hung a very old fly fishing rod and reel on the diagonal on the wall, at the end of the fishing line, I placed a very old fly lure I found. Please tell Matt I am a huge fan of clipper ships too. I wish I could send pictures! God Bless you all for a wonderful week ahead❣

You have wonderful insights and tips for putting together a home that is personal and comfortable, and doing it on a budget. I appreciate hearing about your home decorating adventures. It's been my approach for years. You mentioned that you weren't wild about a gold frame on some artwork you found - just today, I saw a quick, inexpensive fix for that. Jonathan Mendes, on his UA-cam channel Painted Love, put some dark wax over a gold leaf trim on a piece of furniture and it looked great. The wax really toned down the bright gold and gave that surface an aged look that went well with the rest of the piece. I'm going to try it on the frame a small print I just bought.

For as long as I remember I have been drawn to country style and so my journey has drawn me to early country primitives. I’m drawn to pieces that show their age and wear in charming ways and have learned that substituting reproductions for authentic prim pieces does not give me the look I’m wanting. My greatest challenges as I’ve curated my home is waiting and maybe even saving for that right piece rather than settling for something less but also a willingness to exercise flexibility because sometimes the right piece may be different from what I have envisioned…..its also important to me to know when enough is enough so it remains pleasing to my eyes. One unique aspect of prim design is the way prim colors can go together so there is no one particular color emphasized yet it still works. I enjoy moving things around for a fresh look and learning how to use what I have. Thanks for all your tips.

I have only started watching you recently and, although your decorating style is not mine (mid century/scandinvian modern) I agree with your appproach to creating a curated home. I am now married for50 years and am still finding pieces that reflect my style and can "fit" into my home, although finding space is certainly becoming an issue! I use Pinterest to gather ideas and reflect on what i actually need. At the end of the day, I want to walk into my home and breathe a contented sigh, acknowledging "I am home."

Welcome to the Stone Cottage Home family, Miss Debbie! We are glad to have you along.
There is so much we can learn from each other every through different style preferences. That feeling of "I am home" is the one we're all aiming for. I also find Pinterest to be a handy tool for research/inspiration.
I'm considering making a video on mixing design styles. What would you say your tips, challenges, and questions are/were? I'd love to hear your thoughts. 🌹

Love all your dishes. I too was on the look out for Old Britain Castle dishes but in purple. I bought a plate here and there but they were pricey. One day I went to an antique store and under a table was the purple dishes service for 8. I couldn’t believe it. Of coarse I bought them and they are so pretty. Just be careful if they are chipped because they do have lead

      Hi, Miss Rosann!
Oh, the purple Old Britain Castle dishes sound gorgeous, and what a wonderful score on the whole service! Thank you for the tip about the lead.
By the way, I'm considering making a video on mixing design styles. What tips, or question would you have? I'd love to hear your thoughts!

Hi Rachel, Lovely video today and lots of tips - thank you. Its a good idea I think to always take along a tape measure in your bag when going shopping for furniture or larger items. A list of sizes your required item fits into is also handy - you just never know when you find something you feel is perfect but are unsure if it will fit into the space. Couldnt agree more with you about being selective and knowing your personal style. Some handy pictures for reference are good too. xx

Good evening Mrs.Rachel, I enjoyed today video very much. I have a very fenimine style. I love French and English cottage style. I have choosen to combine the two. I love beauty in the French style but I also love practical side of the English. Like the comfortable couches of the English, but I love the French lamps. The English roses are lovely. I have loved antiques since I was a child. I have several in our home. It take time and patience to wait for what your looking for. You said it right about buying just because it's cheap or because your trying to fill something right now.I normally pray before I go thrifting ask God to to please allow a certain thing to be there today. He has always supplied. Part of the fun is the search. All the elements you mention I enjoy very much in my on home. I was so excited this summer I have been wanting an antique book case that has glass doors that lift up. They range from 2,000 to 3,000. I went to an antique store near me and got one for 50.00. That was my favorite find so far this year. Thanks again for share. Hope you and your family have a wonderful weekend.

      Hello Romantic Style,
The glass front bookcase is (I believe) called a lawyer's bookcase. I've been look at them online recently, and they are expensive - you got a great deal! Patience paid off.
Your mix of styles sounds lovely and these two particular styles mix well.

@@StoneCottageHome The video on combining two style would be wonderful.I love floral, english gardens and cottages. I would love to learn how add more Masculine elements that would blend well. My husband was in the navy.So when you were showing the ships your husband liked. It made me think on how to blend the two. Love transware and dishes. I have a very small kitchen I struggle with storage. That looks good. Thank you again for taking time to reply.I truly appreciate it.

The one thing that helped me out is learning the flow of my house. We live in a 1990's ranch style home that was later built on to it. I finally figured out making the front two rooms a living room, which the previous owner had as a dining room and livingroom work better for us . From there is the kitchen then we have an Awkward small room with a fireplace. It took me several times to try to figure out that space out. Which I eventually made into a a small french cafe with a little bistro table chairs. I love drinking my tea or coffee in the morning there. There is another room off of that which now are dining room. Which worked perfectly with the amount of space this room offered. It took me four years to figure out what flow work for our family. Now I able to invision each room, and choose proper paint colors and furniture for each room.

      Good morning,
This is such a helpful comment! You have learned so much about listening to the needs of your family and the flow of the house. You've learned it takes time, observation, and practice to figure out what's best. These are valuable lessons. Working with your home instead of against it is a relief and gives success.
I'm sure you'd say that the four years of "studying" your was well worth it, and you love your home even more!

I have Transferware in Blue, Red, and the Brown. I honestly thought I was finished until I found an 18 piece place setting of Antique Brown at an amazing Estate Sale. I got my Britain Castle at an Estate Sale on 50% off day. Your price I’m yours was amazing. Great find. I started with Blue first. I’m much older than you. I started at 30. You are doing a really great job in hunting.

And I really enjoy your classic, English cottage style, and the way you put it together.
(My struggle is with my health. I have so many things I want to do in our home, but I'm totally backbound by illness. So for me, it's not a lack of ideas, but rather of strength to see projects through. A very frustrating situation, alas.

So sorry to hear this, especially when we think of so many things we want to accomplish but the body will not cooperate. Is there a way to incorporate small things you can do? I have noticed in my own life, small accomplishments are so gratifying, no matter how tiny. If it brings you joy, then by all means, start small. Sending prayers for you, don't give up young lady. 💖

This was lovely Rachel. Beauty does so lift one's spirits. Don't you find?
The challenges for me are a dearth of good places. We have one 'eh' thrift store. That's it. We had a couple of decent places that closed in recent years. And no good yard sales are happening anymore either. Grumble.grumble.

Beauty does lift the spirits. Don't give up! There many treasures to be found online - I've had great success on Facebook Marketplace (a free antique English drum side table), and you could try OfferUp, and Craigslist. Happy hunting!
