So generous to share his knowledge freely like this! What a guy! His Mum says (in his biography) he talked pretty much non-stop from babyhood! Keep talking and keep singing and playing, Steve! We are still listening and loving it!
That M-21 Steve Earle signature guitar sounds wonderful.....would love to see Martin make the M-21, M-18, and OM-18 more available without having to custom order. Thanks for doing this series, Steve. These guitars are fantastic and it's great to see them and hear them
Thank you for sharing your knowledge on these ‘off the wall’ Martins, Steve. I am a picker up in Calgary and an opportunity to purchase an M-21 SE has presented itself. This model is extremely rare up here in Canada and the seller is making a special stop on his drive from Vancouver to Fort McMurray to allow me to play the guitar before committing to buy it. (Apparently this fellow has attended Camp Copperhead, which is a dream of mine as well.) As a longtime fan of yours I can hardly wait to try it out! 🙏🏻🤗
Thanks for this one. I bought my first good guitar- a Gurian JR at Matt Umanov’s in 1975 or 76 (it’s a bit of a blur), so I appreciate the stories about that store. I did, after adding several Taylors, and making my own guitar, finally buy my first Martin a few months ago- a “standard series reimagined” M-36. While not having the cachet of yours, it sounds very similar to the M-21, and is a joy to play. It is great to have the history to go with the guitar.
Thanks so much Steve/ you have influenced my guitar playing so much and I love the honesty and genuine love of the guitars and your music you convey in these videos You come across totally real and the books behind you portray an intelligence behind a certain cool vibe in I totally dig. Biggest things I’ve learned from you over the years (guitar nerds tune in now!) 1. That drop d capo trick with capoing only the bottom 5 strings thingy 2. Bee sting thump picks Thanks again so much for all you do Paul Brogan, Isle of Bute Scotland
I got myself a custom M guitar back in 2010 due to Steve's influence. Mine isn't much different! M size, Indian rosewood back/sides/bridge, ebony fretboard, same Italian Alpine spruce top. Mine is sunburst. I also kept the 36 stylings, so bound neck/etc; I added a bound headstock (no idea why) and swapped to a 1-3/4" nut, 2-1/4" at the bridge modified low-oval neck. Still the same forward-shifted 5/16" bracing. I don't think I'll ever sell it. Might as well have just gotten a Steve Earle M-21, though.
Really enjoy these videos, thanks a lot and keep ‘em comin’. I’m not a player but am a connoisseur of your music. The breadth of your knowledge of guitars is amazing; thanks for sharing and helping us get thru this crisis!
This is SO lovely! I hate how it happens that I listen to several Guitar Town series back to back and forget to hit the like button on each one. (I did do that here) I love too, like Mairi Ann Cullen below, the conversational way Steve shares his appreciation for these instruments. Also in concert how we hear stories of his life... makes us fans feel like he's a friend.
Hi Steve. Thank you again for passing on the knowledge and sharing some of your guitar collection. I want to find a Martin to play but my talent does not warrant buying one for myself. One request, can you try to turn up the volume on your recordings so we can hear you as you move about. There are time when I can't make out everything you are saying. Thanks and be well. M
I remember thinking as a kid that Steve Earle’s number of marriages was so impressive and for the life of me couldn’t see what those ladies did😂 Needless to say his music has been a constant solid thing and I always knew it was a cool thing to like Nirvanas Bleach and Steve Earle since the rebellious thing was there in both.
That Martin archtop neck almost looks like train tracks. Has a big sound for a guitar that seems sort of on the thinner side. Guessing that’s from the neck. Wish I could have picked up one of those M21’s.
I don't think it's the neck. I think it's the bracing and the 16" top! A 16" top is bigger than a Martin dreadnought. However, it is, as you mentioned, much slimmer in depth.
Great video. Very cool to hear some of the history behind the M/0000 Martins. I have a 1987 M-18 and it needed some major work, but is one of my all time favorite guitars. Kind of a weird statistic, between your ‘85 M-18 and my ‘87 M-18, the two of us own almost 1/50th of the entire run of M-18’s...😆.
Steve, here’s my guess. You have the C F Martin Co. You have C and F size archtops. You convert a F size to a flattop. The next letter is M for Martin. That’s how they got the M.
Pretty great bones. What a power house for conversion . I’ve got a late 20’s, early 30’s Vega Cylinder f-hole 16” that has that kind of zing. Not anything like an archtop and reacts similarly to only what has never existed-a 30’s maple Martin 000. Sounds just jumps off and sustains for ............whether finger or flatpicked it’s a beast with a neck you have to wrestle a bit. Makes you fight a bit more but always rewards and sounds great in open C.
They were made both in ambertone and in amberburst, neither of which is classified as "sunburst" (but, of course, they basically are). I don't know how many, though!

It unbelievable, been like this since the beginning. You would think he would care about the audio. I turn it up loud when he talks and then when he strums it rips my head off.
He's owned loads on and off since the 80s mate he's hardly gonna sit there all goofy smiling about and shit. It proves his enthusiasm for these guitars in the fact that he's made 9 videos just about his guitars in the last couple of months.
I really like what you were doing with this series, but it would probably help the sound tremendously if you would put an extra mic on a guitar and then use the other Mic for your voice. The overall sound is kind of amateur sounding.

Yes, and he''s using 2 capos in one of the videos!
I bet his insurance premium is a bitch.
Thanks Steve. ⚓️
Great, simply great video. Your love of guitars and the music they make shows. Thanks!
Legend!
I am really enjoying this series. Thanks for sharing this information and playing.
Sounds GOOD!!!!!!!!! Sounds real dueling Banjo style. WOuld sound great in Copper head Road.
My go to guitar is an M-36. Love that thing. It almost plays itself and can bark like a Dread when you need it to.
Thank you. All the best.
That's one hell of a shirt, I like the message and would have to pick one up if I ever came across one like it.
I’ll go in on that.
I think it's from Ram Das, isn't it?

The great Earle sound with this Martin!
Nice 001 Steve Earl M-21 model. Gonna look for 1! Thanks for the Martin Education Steve! I've got more than a
few 70's Martins.
M-21 Steve Earle signature is my dream guitar!

Hi Steve, enjoying the series from Orange County, NY. Go Yankees. Cheers!
love him
The King
I'd be more than happy to play that guitar for a while.
Eagerly waiting for the Gibson episodes!
Our Glasses match....
Most of my guitars are Fenders
but I do have a Martian guitar that
I cherishes that was my dad's it a D-28,
love your music brother
You have a Martian guitar?? Tell me how they were! Did they abduct you and leave you with a new guitar? ;)

The racing strip neck inlay makes the neck look wider than normal. Optical illusion?
😃
Thanks

I got mine @Wal Mart...whered u get yours. 🤓
Does anyone know how many M-21 Steve Earle signature guitars were made with a sunburst finish?
They were made both in ambertone and in amberburst, neither of which is classified as "sunburst" (but, of course, they basically are). I don't know how many, though!

For 'Our' beautiful brilliant Ultra Great Ultra Badass Warrior Archangel of Justice with Mystic Vision Courage Steve Earle
Schadenfreude
They laugh
when you're on the ground
in agony
you sing like an angel
but they only hear the sound
of envy
if you're hungry
they laugh
that much harder
after you sang them a feast
and annihilated the beast
envy not money
is the root of all evil
but they heard your voice
being envious
they had no choice
but to laugh
when you were on the ground
in agony
though you flew here
to save them
cause they've swallowed
so deep of envy
they will not sleep
cause ugly secrets they keep
where once God saw a soul
and so
they have no grace
of their own
they've seen your angel face
they laugh
deep in that ugly place
where they hide their sin
forever in the garbage bin
of envy
All would envy Shawn Colvin
beautiful for life
and when they let their envy go
then she shows her soul
where beauty lives forever
she 'knows' she 'knows'
she comes and goes
she's a vessel all would envy
she waits for them to let go
then she lets them row
my beauty my grace
your angel face
they will row you home once more
to that heavenly far shore
with me at the helm
and you on the bow
we have found our way
Home
end
Kisses for my beloved eternal soul my infinitely beautiful graceful wise and good Shawn Colvin. Kisses. Michelle
HOW IS IAN DOING I WENT TO SCHOOL WITH HIM IN NASHVILLE
anybody else have trouble hearing this?
@Michael Rafferty
Happens often.
It unbelievable, been like this since the beginning. You would think he would care about the audio. I turn it up loud when he talks and then when he strums it rips my head off.
Steve, who did the conversion for you? Did they get the parts from Martin?
Anyone know the same of the song he is playing?
Gibson Celebrity 1985/6 please. I know you like them but do you still have it?
Thanks
No
what are the back and side wood on the Steve Earle M-21?
East Indian Rosewood
C. F. M(artin)?
"M" ... Modified?
Nobody knows for sure what the M stands for. But it just means 0000! It could stand for "Martin," some have suggested.
Been waiting for you to get the audio right. Still waiting.
Why does a neck have a lot to do with the way a guitar sounds?
Guess that was a stupid question
It must be great owning all those beautiful guitars. Have you tried telling your face?
He's owned loads on and off since the 80s mate he's hardly gonna sit there all goofy smiling about and shit. It proves his enthusiasm for these guitars in the fact that he's made 9 videos just about his guitars in the last couple of months.
No everyone shows their emotion on their face. Can't you tell how happy he is by the way he chatters about them?
I really like what you were doing with this series, but it would probably help the sound tremendously if you would put an extra mic on a guitar and then use the other Mic for your voice. The overall sound is kind of amateur sounding.
