It's frankly brilliant, and we know he knew Cassado- do we think that that is what was intended for tempos, in the last movement? I like it- perhaps it rarely gets played like that because very few can?

    Overwhelming performance!
In 1966, I collaborated with Starker in Korea. THANKS to F.Lopez!

Starker was a really virtuoso and one of the greatest cellist of 20 th century but here in my humble opinion it’s very too fast. It’s a Jota dance and it’s like "por Fandango" not "por Algeria". Of course it’s very impressive but I don’t have "El Duende" who is the most important for me concerning Spanish Flamenco.

i love how he adds the plucked D chord at the end! i always thought the original finish to this piece could use a little something.

at 2:03 he skips a couple measures

I was wondering if anyone else noticed that! Though it's not out of character for him. In this same recital he skips an entire page in the Kodály because he didn't want to play it.

I never knew that! Makes me think that he is kind of a lazy cellist. Not saying that I could play any better than him though lol

@@samwhitty3434 I have a saying for my students: "good cellists are lazy." I'll let you take from that what you will. 🙂

Although I have been a great admirer of the late Janos Starker ever since the Nineteen-Sixties, this performance does not really convince me that this composition is worthy of very much of our attention.

I'm studying this, and it's really impressing me how starker does this, especially the last movement, technically wise. Like wow. But musically, idk, every movement feels kinda rushed🤔

@@marioroveda5481 this piece would easily take me 20 minutes to get through. I believe things need to breathe a bit more. There's a lot to love here, but it isn't my favorite interpretation.
