I think people are going to really get into the EDGE sound due to being easy to use and also much much cheaper than a DFAM, I may in future pick up a couple, would be fun for that analog percussive sound. Thx for the upload.
If I were looking for something that can do rumbling style sounds, then Edge it is. But the DFAM clearly has a tighter low end and a filter with more overtones. What I'm looking for in this type of machine is something that doesn't just do boomy kick and bright hihat patterns. What I want is the modular glitch sound. I already have sampled kicks and hihats so what I need is tom and percussion patterns. For that, the DFAM is the winner.
As a Crave owner I have to say, the form factor is really nice on these Behringer boxes. Only little downside is the position of the patch bay imho. As I do mainly ambient, I'm not much into the drum machine business, but for the price, I'm really tempted by the Edge to do some percussive experiments.
@@Il-Cane Get over yourself. Dont be a gatekeeper. I've been doing this for over 20 years and fully grasp synthesis and sound design. So, hate away. If you don't like it, don't listen to it. Personally, I think it's fun to make and if it's fun then I don't see the issue, but you know what is better apparently.
If you haven't already, one thing you might want to try is running it at max tempo. I'm not sure if the Edge can do this but the DFAM's sequencer maxes out at 700 cycles per second, which at those speeds causes the individual steps to merge into a single audible tone. Use an external sequencer to control the filter, pitch and start-stop and you've basically got an analogue version of a wavetable synth.
Man that left/right combo at the end was amazing! Left me wondering, how could I emulate that with only one machine. One possibility would be to memorize the movements then do 2 individual recordings, not yet sure how hard this will be but I'm sure it will take a lot of practice. My second idea was simply to do one recording, put it on 2 different tracks and use plugins in the daw to make each one different enough to get the effect (who knows where this will lead, I doubt I'll get the same effect but I might get something interesting!). You've definitely inspired a whole new project, great work Starsky! Love your channel man.
Yes thank you for this video the second I saw the edge with the dedicated analog sequencer and all the modulation I figured this looks like a familiar modular drum synthesizer
You just saved me quite a bit of cash with this! I think the pink noise option gave the edge … the edge. Also what a nice surprise to hear a fellow scouser on one of these videos
@NEUZETH MUSIC I agree, if you listen to them closely, then the Moog filter is much smoother, whereas the Behringer filter has noticeable stepping. But really if you're only listening out for it can you hear it! The biggest difference I find is in the VCO's, but, I've always preferred the Cool Audio 3340's over the Moogs discrete oscillators, although this is purely personal taste.
I keep thinking everybody would be better off getting a Behringer Model D and a Korg SQ-1 than either of them. Or hooking an SQ-1 up to just about anything and pretending it's a DFAM. The SQ-1 is basically a much-improved DFAM sequencer (multiple quantization options, 16-step options, random options), and the Model D has better envelopes and an extra oscillator. Maybe I'm missing something... Although setting the PPQ on the SQ-1 is tricky. There's a chart on Korg's FAQ for the SQ-1, but it's difficult to comprehend, and obviously they should've put the info in the manual. But it's an awesome little sequencer. I think I figured it out, so if anybody cares: Korg SQ-1 = 1StP (4 PPQ) default - hold down START/STOP while turning on to enter global parameter mode - use SEQUENCER MODE selector to set step resolution - turn off/on again "WW" ALT = 1/4-note step = 4-bar pattern = 0.5 PPQ "Z" ORDER = 1/8-note step = 2-bar pattern = 1 PPQ "" TURN = 1/16-note step = 1-bar pattern = 2 PPQ "=>" ORDER = 1/4-note step = 4-bar pattern = 1 PPQ => CV DUTY = 1/8-note step = 2-bar pattern = 2 PPQ => CV SLIDE = 1/16-note step = 1-bar pattern = 4 PPQ
sq1 works well with dfam as well. you can basically offload either pitch or velocity knobs for sq1 and use the builtin knobs to modulate something else
The DFAM's got this oily sinister undertone that sounds like it just cant be replicated. but you gotta ask yourself if its worth that huge leap in price difference.
I was really excited when i first heard that the Edge was going to be released a while ago. But now that its available, the more video's that i see of the Edge, the more i dislike the sound that it makes. I am sure that there are plenty of people who love the sound and what the Edge does, but it just sounds like everything that it does is extremely distorted and over saturated to be useful. I am still really considering purchasing an Edge in the next couple of weeks, but i am really worried that its just not going to scratch that itch i have for randomised drums and percussion sounds.
A brilliant demo. I love the idea of a Moog, but I'll definitely be considering the Edge. There seems little point in spending out the extra money. BTW That is a splendid industrial groove you have going on around 15 minutes in.
These very little differences in sound make me wanna have more the EDGE than the DFAM. For sythbass or lead the moog sound would fit better, cause of its unexactness and "oily, sinister undertone" as Jason Tran describted, but for percussions and kicks i like the lttle better clearness of the behringer more. And what i like very much on the EDGE is the clock-divider! But after all, they sound nearly exact the same.
Great comparison video dude. Your vids are one of the reasons why I got the Edge. I have the mother 32. And have the model 15 on the way mad to get into the world of modular 😂
@@StarskyCarr cheers dude your an inspiration it's an ever expanding hole that I find myself getting deeper into 😂😂 bought the hydrasynth desktop as well mental behaviour
Great video! I think at this price point - you’re stupid to NOT buy these clones. It really opens up the modular synth market, but also probably ensures a faithful customer base to “collect ‘em all” 😂 I never liked the sound of their mixers or effects units at all, and have bad mouthed the company many times… But they can have my $250 subscription to every one until I die 😂
@daanleever6411 Moog didn't develop the instrument. They had an awesome idea, thats right. So kudos to Moog for being innovative, but the Edge is a complete redesign with own board, etc. So Behringer also put a ton of money into the development. To demand that nobody should produce an instrument like the DFAM is comparable to say that nobody should produce any subtractive synth, or Rhodes piano, etc. anymore. Plus, I don't believe that they both are in the same market. Moog is handmade, most likely higher quality and an original brand. People are buying the Edge because they can't afford the DFAM. And Moog fans who can afford it will still go for the original.
I have two DFAMs, and have been thinking for a long time about getting one of these MAFD modules to get them to play with midi. With import taxes, that would almost be the same price as an Edge... So maybe getting an Edge would be nice just for the midi, and getting a 3rd voice :) (on a sidenote, how behringer can pull this off without getting sued is beyond me...)
@@EricBlair-jg2ux Has something changed here? The original Moog low pass filter was patented. The patent expired after 50 years, and then suddenly every manufacturer offered that filter legally.
Very good comparison video! What i find strange is that Behringer used a CEM (well almost a CEM) for the VCF. i would have very much preferred when they had used the Crave VCF in t his module also. The filter plays an essential role, especially in a small percussive sound source. Hopefully they will do that in a reworked version of the Edge. That would make it more compatible soundwise with the Crave also.
The Edge sounds really similar. But i have to say the the filter sweeps at 4:40 sound thinner on the edge. The Moog has there a more rich bodied omph sound. At least in this presentation imho
The noise options on the edge do seem to be brighter than the dfams which is nice, the dfams fm sounds a little bit finer but that might just be due to how it was swept thru in the video
dfam has those knobs that are easy to nudge by the edge of your fingers and is much more knob twiddler friendly. edge has midi. other than that, almost the same. i like the big ridged dfam knobs and already have a dfam. but edge sounds great too.
This seals it for me. If my pockets were a bit deeper, I would choose the DFAM, Just because I like the big black Moog knobs lol! But the Edge has Midi, and sounds not better or worse.. just slightly different. For a third of the $? Edge wins.
200 bucks I’m all about the behringer. I already tried to buy it but of course it’s not available yet. They’re promoting it as it is available which is always fun.
Volca price for Moog sounds, Behringer have made a winner with this synth. I have been really impressed with the quality of their instruments and how similar in sound to the originals. Thanks for a great informative vid :)
Since Behringer copies Moog synths, Moog gets a lot of advertising for free. It's a long time ago, since we had a lot of vids about the DFAM. Now the attention into the "original" comes back. If i would be the marketing boss of Moog, Uli Behringer would be my friend! Seriously.
I have a DFAM but to me the CEM filter sounds a bit - can I say it? - edgier.. 239€ at Thomann right now.. waiting to see if they will drop below 199€. Maybe sell the DFMA and get 2 Edges..
This is going to be a big seller. It’s really cool, especially if you interface it with eurorack modules. Every time I see these comparison videos, I think about when the people at Behringer did the exact same thing when they were developing this. And they kept tweaking it until they sounded almost identical.
@@79Glitch Wait, you're telling me _this one video_ suddenly turned you from defending Behringer to hoping for their downfall and the disappointment of all their global customers? 🤣 Come off it, mate.
I think the moog filter is a bit smoother but the rest is hard to tell especially over UA-cam, but as for once it’s in a track I think anyone could be fooled either way. As for build quality well that goes to the moog but at 3 x the price that figures.
I love the DFAM and can't wait to add a second one. The Edge sounds fine and I am sure it works well if people want to try a fun little analog percussion box like these.
@@PsychologyAcademia *you're certainly free to feel that way. They don't sound exactly the same, although similar and both very capable and I am sure, fun. Also, Moog comes up with original designs and employs people in Asheville, NC and that's also worth something in my opinion. Behringer waits for other people to design things and then undercuts them by manufacturing things in China. That's also fine, but it's more than just a designer label as the difference.
@@PsychologyAcademia if you can`t notice a difference in the sound then the edge is the instrument to go. Not saying that the edge is bad, not at all. But there is a clear difference if you listen carfully. You would probably not notice it in a full mix. However and instrument is not just about the sound, it`s about the feel when you touch it, the response, the look. The DFAM is a beautiful and unique instrument and i would buy it once again over the edge any time. Midi in on the edge is great though.
There is many differences but its all about taste and actually i have the 2 together so they can cohabitate if i have to keep one will stay with dfam but buying a second dfam no question better to go with a edge and buy some pedals for same price 👊
For the price, i dont know why people have a problem with the Edge. Especially during these times, people don't have hundreds of pounds to throw at gear you might not vibe with.
the sound quality will never be the same if you compare a machine that costs lower than 200 euros and another one that costs about 700 euros but I think compared to the difference in price the Edge is a good product so if you can't afford the Moog or you simply don't need it for what you do since you're not a professional musician the Edge is a good choice in my opinion.
That was a brilliant video and thank you. I think you were a bit hard on yourself for not being precise and exact. But yes there are ones to find fault. To be perfectly honest, if you did that comparrison behind curtains I wonder how many would get it wrong? I was going for the dfam as I have the mother and subharmonicon but I think I will get the Edge now and a Strymon Big sky with the rest of the money I would have spent on a dfam. Thanks again. Great demmo.
Those similarities and differences make me think that I should have both of them. Like when you double a guitar track by playing the same tune on a different guitar, having them play the same thing together will most likely give a very interesting feature-rich sound.
The main reason that works is difference in performance timings and tone settings. So to get that effect with a synth (which is much more versatile tone wise) you could just tweak the filter and replay the part by hand and get the effect. Only one synth needed!
I have a DFAM. Have to admit, not much to separate them sound wise. Not to fussed on the garish pink. Hanging for the Acid Yellow Subharmonicon clone ;-)
well with the price tags i would say that it is cool to have another synth in market identical (or a clone) to the dfam. having two synths with the saem workflow is better for the market anyway. edge sounds very very good.
Oh!Thanks for the comparison. All other things being equal, I'll take dehrenger to the party. Because if some fan of mine overturns a glass of champagne on my iron, my tears will cost a lot less money...

Ambient music, but not into drum machines? You're missing out on very interesting stuff
Great review. Coming from a DFAM owner, this and every other behringer synth always sound brighter. Just me?
Yes.
Their prophet 600 knock off also sounds much tighter than original.
That's the fog lifting from your realization you paid too much.
Yes thank you for this video the second I saw the edge with the dedicated analog sequencer and all the modulation I figured this looks like a familiar modular drum synthesizer
Sounds pretty damn great. Moog is great... but so is the Edge... and logos rarely impress me... 🐜
You just saved me quite a bit of cash with this! I think the pink noise option gave the edge … the edge. Also what a nice surprise to hear a fellow scouser on one of these videos
Great demo, thanks!
At last!! I remember doing this with the Crave and the M-32... and to all intents, they were almost identical in so many ways.
Great video Mr C..!
But the filter makes the difference. Moog is Moog. I have a Mavis in my Eurorack and I love it.
I think I figured it out, so if anybody cares:
Korg SQ-1 = 1StP (4 PPQ) default
- hold down START/STOP while turning on to enter global parameter mode
- use SEQUENCER MODE selector to set step resolution
- turn off/on again
"WW" ALT = 1/4-note step = 4-bar pattern = 0.5 PPQ
"Z" ORDER = 1/8-note step = 2-bar pattern = 1 PPQ
"" TURN = 1/16-note step = 1-bar pattern = 2 PPQ
"=>" ORDER = 1/4-note step = 4-bar pattern = 1 PPQ
=> CV DUTY = 1/8-note step = 2-bar pattern = 2 PPQ
=> CV SLIDE = 1/16-note step = 1-bar pattern = 4 PPQ
awesome detail!!! thank you for posting
sq1 works well with dfam as well. you can basically offload either pitch or velocity knobs for sq1 and use the builtin knobs to modulate something else
The DFAM's got this oily sinister undertone that sounds like it just cant be replicated. but you gotta ask yourself if its worth that huge leap in price difference.
Yep plus the Edge has midi
@@rorz999
The DFAM can be easily retrofitted with MIDI support, Sonocast makes a MIDI interface for it that connects via the patch bay.
I've already got the crave it just needs companionship!
But after all, they sound nearly exact the same.
so tiny diffrence going moog is 3 to 1 price 1 moog cost same as edge spice crave lolo
This convinced me that the behringer is the right choice.
Perfect comparison, thanks, i was on the edge of buying the moog but will go for the edge now.
Moog has to make a DFAM 2 with all the connectivity plus something else to justify the price difference.
They sound very similar, the edge is a tad bit brighter sounding to my ears.
Great comparison video dude. Your vids are one of the reasons why I got the Edge. I have the mother 32. And have the model 15 on the way mad to get into the world of modular 😂
Careful there…. It’s a deep hole you’re exploring! 🕳️
@@StarskyCarr cheers dude your an inspiration it's an ever expanding hole that I find myself getting deeper into 😂😂 bought the hydrasynth desktop as well mental behaviour
Great video!
I think at this price point - you’re stupid to NOT buy these clones. It really opens up the modular synth market, but also probably ensures a faithful customer base to “collect ‘em all” 😂
I never liked the sound of their mixers or effects units at all, and have bad mouthed the company many times…
But they can have my $250 subscription to every one until I die 😂
I think you're so right
It’s a real shame it’s not Eurorack compatible, that’s just stupid.
Great comparison. I'd say for all intents and purposes they are identical. What a bargain the Edge is! 🔥
Or is the moog overpriced? 😊
It’s not really a bargain if somebody else is paying the price, is it?
@@XanderEwald So, who is paying the price?
@@suga4all Moog for developing the instrument
Tbh I think the Edge sounds a little crunchier which I like…
I have two DFAMs, and have been thinking for a long time about getting one of these MAFD modules to get them to play with midi. With import taxes, that would almost be the same price as an Edge... So maybe getting an Edge would be nice just for the midi, and getting a 3rd voice :)
(on a sidenote, how behringer can pull this off without getting sued is beyond me...)
In the same way anyone can manufacture a Les Paul type guitar, or Stratocaster, or any company can make a smart phone or tablet without paying Apple.
look ---> Serendipity DFAM Thing
You can't own the guts of analogue synth. It's beyond me so many people don't know and/or accept that fact. It's kinda crazy
@@EricBlair-jg2ux Has something changed here? The original Moog low pass filter was patented. The patent expired after 50 years, and then suddenly every manufacturer offered that filter legally.
Designs have to be about 20% different, I feel like the color choice almost fits that lol
Thanks mate good stuff got my edge pre-order in can't wait sold my dfam and regret it so chuffed to get an edge hopefully soon
I’m pretty sure it’s a CEM in the CRAVE as well (Behringer manufacturers the chips - used by sequential etc
Close enough, I’d say
it’s not the Godzilla of clones, but it is a very large, vexatious, fire-breathing two legged lizard frequently seen downtown in Tokyo. . .
I love the fact that BFAM, sorry EDGE, can do everything and more than the DFAM :D
And just like that, I've pre ordered theEdge from Andertons Music for what seems like quite a saving compared to other stores. 😎
The Edge sounds really similar. But i have to say the the filter sweeps at 4:40 sound thinner on the edge. The Moog has there a more rich bodied omph sound. At least in this presentation imho
That’ll be the Curtis vs the Moog ladder filter. Moog is renowned for sounding richer.
They sound identical minus a tinge of additional warmth that the dfam has. Not enough to justify getting it over the edge.
The noise options on the edge do seem to be brighter than the dfams which is nice, the dfams fm sounds a little bit finer but that might just be due to how it was swept thru in the video
analog fm is very sensitive to oscillator circuit. moog has its own oscs, I think edge has those 3340 clones so fm mileage between these can/will vary
also moog noise is not pure white noise, it has subtle lowpass filter in it to color it
dfam has those knobs that are easy to nudge by the edge of your fingers and is much more knob twiddler friendly. edge has midi. other than that, almost the same. i like the big ridged dfam knobs and already have a dfam. but edge sounds great too.
Very, very great sound friend
Sold! I have too much gear so 1 more will not hurt. Need to retire now and just jam all day.
Really appreciate your comparisons with the two. I'm sold on the Edge. I mean for the price it can't be beat. Thanks a bunch guy 😊
They sound damn nigh identical in the L+R stereo demo at the end!
Or maybe my left ear has an integrated 4 pole ladder filter 🤯
This is going to be a big seller. It’s really cool, especially if you interface it with eurorack modules.
Every time I see these comparison videos, I think about when the people at Behringer did the exact same thing when they were developing this. And they kept tweaking it until they sounded almost identical.
Hopefully this never comes out like the UBXA and the rest of their product line that is 5 years plus overdue?
@@79Glitch Comes out soon! I got mine a few days ago! I ordered another one and it should come in July.
I can't speak to the moog, but the edge is built like a tank, absolutely rock solid.
Nice review and comparison 😊👌🏻
Oh yes! A Carr VS video to help me decide on weather to get a defam or edge.. ok now I just want both of them 😅.
I love the DFAM and can't wait to add a second one. The Edge sounds fine and I am sure it works well if people want to try a fun little analog percussion box like these.
As they both sound exactly the same your paying for the designer label. I get that. But the niche market of designer stuff is small.
Behringer is impressive!
lovely playing
Nice video. Interesting. I’m still on the fence. I’ll probably pick one up second hand.
There is many differences but its all about taste and actually i have the 2 together so they can cohabitate if i have to keep one will stay with dfam but buying a second dfam no question better to go with a edge and buy some pedals for same price 👊
DFAM sounds better, it's warmer, the edge is a bit tinnier , thanks for the demo!!
@19.28 Nice hell yes that is some sweet shis.
Congrats at getting both at the same settings for the demo.
✨Cooles Video, Starsky Carr 👍🤌🏻🤞
That was a brilliant video and thank you.
I think you were a bit hard on yourself for not being precise and exact.
But yes there are ones to find fault.
To be perfectly honest, if you did that comparrison behind curtains I wonder how many would get it wrong?
I was going for the dfam as I have the mother and subharmonicon but I think I will get the Edge now and a Strymon Big sky with the rest of the money I would have spent on a dfam.
Thanks again.
Great demmo.
Just noticed on the Andertons page, 16 voice poly chain. can you imagine playing chords on this thing with 16 chained together.
If your speakers (and ears) could take it!
Fantastic video.
So theres only the subharmonicon missing. Maybe it will be light blue?? Or dark green.. 😎
Red
I’m getting the Edge.
I have a DFAM. Have to admit, not much to separate them sound wise. Not to fussed on the garish pink. Hanging for the Acid Yellow Subharmonicon clone ;-)
Nope, it's red....
well with the price tags i would say that it is cool to have another synth in market identical (or a clone) to the dfam. having two synths with the saem workflow is better for the market anyway. edge sounds very very good.
“having two synths with the saem workflow is better for the market anyway. ” not quite
Both banging units, who cares which one ..... machines rock!!!!!
Oh!Thanks for the comparison. All other things being equal, I'll take dehrenger to the party. Because if some fan of mine overturns a glass of champagne on my iron, my tears will cost a lot less money...
With current Moog $400off sale on the 32/Dfam sound studio is 1k (+tax)U.S.
With Current Behringer price back at 199 Crave/Rave its 400(+tax) U.S. a bit less than half as much as the whole Moog Sound Studio in North America right now.
Kept almost getting a Crave for the last 2years but end up buying other gear instead. Now I kind want both. 😅
