I was in that audience, and struggled but ultimately enjoyed and was truly uplifted by the exercise. And Wendy’s talk and her presence were one of the most disarming, enlivening and touching experiences I’ve had in 14 years in the TED theater.
One of the best lively connecting talk...she really pays attention to her audience and draws out the essential drawing i.e. attention out of them...nailed !
SUCH A LOVELY MESSAGE, WENDY!! Thank you for sharing your gift and perspective with us. I frequently do the blind portrait exercise in my PLAY workshops. I get the drawers to draw themselves and see themselves in a new light. Your exercise of drawing a stranger and practicing the art of "looking" is the perfect perspective shift I needed today. Thank you once again. And I'm excited to watch strangers draw each other in my future sessions!
I began drawing again after a long hiatus solely to let go of judgement and my inner perfectionist. Glad to say I’ve been loving it and learning a lot more than I could have thought about the craft and myself. Great talk :)
Wendy, what an outstanding message! It reminds me of so many instances in my life that I am now “re”pondering. My quick story: My wife and I were living overseas and decided to take a long trip by car throughout Italy. Because we wanted to “see” as many sites as possible in our timeframe, we more or less raced from city and site to city and site. When we reached Lake Cuomo and decided to spend the night or two, this is when we were brought down from our balloon. We inquired at the hotel’s front desk what the sites were in their town, where to find a good meal, etc. I think that we looked frantic and rushed to our hostess. This is when mama “directed” us to sit down, relax, take in the view (which was incredible) and to enjoy the moment. As we sat there for 10-15 minutes, she suddenly appeared with a bottle of red and two glasses. She poured for us and said something like “You Americans are such beautiful people, my family and I love you as you are kind and always giving. The problem with Americans is that they do not know how to relax. How to vacation. Always running from place to place and don’t remember where they’ve been or what they saw. Please just sit here while we bring you some lunch and another bottle of vino. When you are ready I will tell you about the sites around here.” My wife and I never left the hotel as the view and the people were great until later that evening. We stayed four nights and took the time to enjoy the many “moments” and can recall the entire stay. I agree with you, LOOKING with an open mind does wonders.
Brilliant! Through drawing reclaiming our humanity grounding each other in community. Thank you Wendy. Inspiring! Sharing this TED along as well. Kindness, LCA 💜🌷🌈
I used to do that when I was young. I was sitting and starting to focus on one of the things around me, and then I start to draw it. when I grew up I lost this sense. I don't know why. Maybe the world has changed, especially after the invasion of spiritual reality into our life. And maybe I have changed and become unable to realize the beauty of things that surround me. Anyway, Wendy MacNaughton inspired me again to return to my old beautiful action. Thank you, Wendy.
You are wonder-full! I do Draw Together-it began as a teacher-thing-but now I do it to feel better. Thanks, Wendy. (I'm showing this to my middle schoolers together after we do the Five-Finger drawing podcast.)
I was looking for a video to listen to while drawing, and found this one accidentally. Agree that by drawing, you actually look closer and more carefully and pay more attentions to the details
Sounds like a personal success story to me. But, yes, I do agree that we as a people should learn to notice more details everywhere around us, drawing or not.
Incredible person reading this, you have everything there is to succeed in life, whatever that is for you. Go after the life you truly want NOW! ✨ I believe in you! Love - Nat ❤️
really this talk is important to us we really need to see more clear and looking with focus to ourselves and our people who is love to good see and more love 💜
"Delight in the law of the Lord" is a phrase from Psalm 1:2 in the Bible, which describes a blessed person who cherishes God's Word and meditates on it constantly: 📜 Psalm 1:1Blessed is the one who does not walk in step with the wicked or stand in the way that sinners take or sit in the company of mockers, 2but whose delight is in the law of the Lord, and who meditates on his law day and night. 3That person is like a tree planted by streams of water, which yields its fruit in season and whose leaf does not wither- whatever they do prospers.
I gave up my art school when I was 13, though everyone said I had a talent, I just didn't like my pictures because they weren't "perfect enough" 🤦♀️ and yes I still like drawing and painting
Peace. Interest Processes. The greater the interest the greater the success. The brain processes interests, which make the heart it needs happy. Why often a human will run away from fear. Fear causes the heart the brain needs to pound harder at what is causing the fear, the brain then does not like this, for the brain loves the Heart the most.
I publish the print version of 'Diamond Dragons' on 12.21.21. It contains 60+ illustrations, some of them, hand-drawn. A few, crafted by myself. But, unfortunately, my Time has been cut short. I doubt anyone will understand just how spiritual the book is (at a glance), but... I hope some people find out how far the portal of fire leads. *"Time is the only resource for which no creature may bargain."* 🐲✨🐲✨🐲✨ "Before I start, I must see my end. Destination known, my mind's journey now begins. Upon my chariot, heart & soul's fate revealed. In Time, all points converge--hope's strength re-steeled. But to earn final peace at the Universe's endless refrain, We must see all in nothingness... ...before we start again." 🐲✨🐲✨🐲✨ -- Diamond Dragons (book 1)
When I was homeless in Portland, Oregon they frowned on homeless people in the library. Portland (the liberal epicenter of a very liberal state) treats homeless people terribly. They have no idea what they're doing and are completely incompetent. Most of the people in the social services industry are ½ a step from homelessness themselves. They applied for the job because of their contact with social services when they were homeless.
Some think it is the big things that cause men to stumble. Often it is the minor ones that shake us the most. This shows the futility of self-confidence.
Drawing aside, most public libraries will have a copy of Mahler's 8th Symphony and a listening room. Plenty you tube feeds of the same. Toward the end of the Symphony the text calls us not to a horizontal view, but a vertical one. Doctor Marianus and the chorus beckons us to "Blicket aut zum Retterblick," to look up to the redeeming gaze. Sometimes there is no hope to be found in this world, and yet, even a public library can point us in the right direction, which I am afraid, is not, horizontal.

Such a lovely talk. Thanks for this inspiring talk.
Most brilliant introduction! Straight to the topic
I like how the room design complemented her talk about drawing with only a single stroke in order to demonstrate the topic of paying attention.
Sounds like a personal success story to me. But, yes, I do agree that we as a people should learn to notice more details everywhere around us, drawing or not.
