- It's easy to stop smartphone wind noise from ruining your videos with this simple, cheap DIY hack.
I quickly show you how to make a wind muffler for any smartphone out of a pair of wired earbuds with a microphone. I made mine a few years ago but they are still working well today and I always have them in my back pocket. I actually use this in my videos check this one out • Storm Barra hits hard ...

As smart phone only filmers, this is invaluable and genius! We’ve struggled a lot recently with wind noise. Thanks Ken and Carol, yet again for your vanlife tips 👍🏼
Glad it was helpful!
smartphones are wonderful for film making. Add a pocket zoom for distant closeups and it can be the perfect package 😁👍
Indeed, we’re currently looking at our upgrade options. We are also editing on our phones too, so improving what we’ve got already is looking like a strong option.
@@LifeistooshortCK Great hack! What’s a pocket zoom? I’m very interested in the equipment you use and editing suite. Perhaps a video for the future?
I've only just come across this hack and it's absolutely brilliant. I cut up a bit of faux fur yesterday, sewed it around the mic on my headphones and went out in what felt like a gale force wind today, and not a sound on the recording. Amazing. Thank you so much!
Great 😁👍
Improvise, overcome, adapt, in action!
Now that IS clever, Thank you Ken, I shall be following your advice for this idea 👍
What a fantastic idea! It made a lot of difference to your two clips. Im going to try this. Thanks loads Ken
Great tip! Thanks Ken and Carol 😀
Awesome little advice! Love it. Have a great day!
That's brilliant Ken! I shall try that next time I'm down Exmouth or up Dartmoor.
Great idea. Thanks Ken 🙏
Love this!! Thanks!
Certainly improves the sound on windy days. Nice. Well done :-)
What a clever idea. Take care Gill
Genius 👍👍🤩
Great idea
Thank you
Great idea. Thanks so much.
Always great tips 👌
Brillant idea 😁
Thank you very much for this low cost homemade solution to wind noise.
Great idea, especially when you need a quick fix
Love this tip 👍🏻
Great tip!
NICE...totally going to do this.
Very good idea well done looking forward to the next upload stay safe both 👍 😀 😊 🙏
Another great tip Ken. Thanks for sharing because there are many times when the iPhone is quicker/easier to use 👍
Pure genious that ken thank you 😀
Brilliant idea Ken.👍
Thanks Maggie ☺️
Well done! ☺
morning guvnor another great vlog
Genius-thanks!
Excellent!
Works like a charm, thank you so much for sharing! ☺️
You are welcome 👍
Clever Good one, 👍🇮🇲Manxman
Oh my word that’s clever!!!
Fantastic. I will use the information you provided in your video to fashion my own wind muffler one day this week. I'm so glad I thought to search this topic... Great video! Thanks Mate!☀😎👍
You are welcome. 👍
As always Ken great tips!! thank you 😊
Hi Jackie ❤️
Such a great helpful tip!!! Thanks.
Hello dear friend. We subbed ❤️
A brilliant and simple solution! Thank you!
Incidentally, the new and fabulous Shure Movemics have catastrophically bad & ineffective windmuffs!!!
PS I'd forgotten I'd watch this 2 years ago!!!
Hi Will. I’d forgotten I’d made the video 😂 Hope you and Yvonne are keeping well 🙂
Good idea.
What great idea and cheap 2
Good idea
Hobbycraft do a good little reel of faux fur which is ideal for this, stuck some over my phone case mic holes and it works well!
Thank you for that 👍
Now where’s my gonk?
Up there for thinking down there for dancing. Well done.👍
Thanks Karen 😁
Brilliant x
You could even run the headphones up under your shirt and pull the furry microphone out at your collar. The headphones will be under your shirt, against your chest so they won’t clack and you will be hands free and inconspicuous. Really smart and simple enough for everyone to do. I have a pair that I never use, preferring ear buds or ear pods. I am now rethinking that. Thanks! Seriously, thanks A LOT!!
I never tried running it up my sleeve but I did try lots of other ways to use it. The biggest problem is they get tangled up a lot in your pocket. I am surprised mine still work as they are really abused in my back pocket. The quickest and easiest way I have found so far is to just hold the tangled mess in my hand, let the mic dangle free and tape the clackers together. obviously I can't use them as headphones like that but I don't use headphones so no problem for me. 🙂
@@LifeistooshortCK - I don’t think you would be happy with it up your sleeve. Every time you used that arm, you would dislodge it. I don’t film, except playing around, but I listen to books and music. For whatever reason, I did not like my headphones to show when I am out and about or when I was working. It just feels rude, somehow. I don’t/didn’t mind a stethoscope (except running- you don’t make THAT mistake twice) but the headphones said I was only partially engaged. True in theory but not in fact after 38 years, I did not have to think about what I was doing but like driving it became automatic but I digressed. The cords length of the iPhone headphones are 1meter long. You hold the phone in front of you so running the cord up the front of your shirt is what I am thinking. I admit that I have a natural anchor that you might not have and you might be tall enough that running the cord up the front of your shirt might pull the front of your shirt up. So tucking the excess down from your collar in front with just the mic and the bottom end of the cord to the phone would remain outside of your shirt. If you use a selfie stick, you would probably only have the ear pieces hanging free and they could tuck under your collar to keep from flapping. If you DO use your phone on a stick and hold the ear pieces in the same hand as the stick then everything I have said is wrong and you have already figured out the best way to keep the ear pieces from clacking together. That, frankly, was the only reason I suggested it because I only keep one ear bud in place at one time so that I can hear whatever I need to hear. Husband needing something, traffic noise, engine and road noise, that kind of thing. So what works for a short female who does not hold the phone out would probably not work for you. So, in memory of our good friend Roseanne Roseanna Danna, “Never mind”. I type what I am thinking so sorry about that. Your mic muff is still brilliant!
Thanks so much for this Ken. Wasn't sure how it worked at first. Only saw an old pair of ear buds in a drawer the other day, now to go on a hunt for anything fluffy.. May have holes in a throw before nightfall lol 🤔😁
You are welcome
Poor carol was getting her locks battered and a great job Ken. XX ❤️💙
A very useful hint, indeed! It should work aswell with an ear plug headphone on an android device, I presume. Thanks! 👍
Yes it does!
Cheers Ken Im on it 💨💨💨💨👍 Hugs to Carol x Stephen n Skye from The windy Isle 🏴👍🚐👊😘
Are you totally reliant on your phone now Stephen ?
Yes as my RV router is blown Argh costing a fortune to upload on Iphone pay Data 🤪🤪 May have to cut my tour ?
Great tip👍 we always film our videos on our phone, will give this a try, we usually just add music if it's inaudible lol 😁
That is better than the noise of the wind distortion but even better is to add your own wind effects. Using this wind muffler will allow you to build up a library of loads of sounds. Your videos a great by the way. Love the narration 😁👍
@@LifeistooshortCK thanks for the tips, we're always trying to improve our filming techniques 😁
Glad you didn't block the wind altogether as it would not have been realistic but good tip.
Are there no limits to your wisdom? 🤩
Brilliant, Ken, thanks. I'll use it on my android phone.
I have "fluffies" on my other mics but always just accepted mobile phone wind noise would be there.
Now what about the gopro? I suspect I'll always have a use for thevtascam audio recorder :)
I also love that you record atmos tracks for later.
Best regards, Steve
I ditched my Gopro’s as they constantly let me down. I use a DJI Osmo action and I just use Rode Wireless 2 mics on that. I am quite pleased with their supplied wind muffler. I use the fur on my superzoom if I need to be compact. A good sound library often saves the day in the edit. 👍
Oh, that’s brilliant!
What’s the sound like (for picking up sound you want to hear) from a distance? Such as if you’re filming Carol and she’s not right next to the phone.
It’s not up to that so only use this for ambient sound. If I wanted to grab her voice at a distance I would use a Rode wireless mic. Think of this solution as a way to grab ambient sound outside with maximum convenience. I build my own collection of sound recordings for use when the actual audio is unusable.
@@LifeistooshortCK That’s great feedback. Thank you. 😊
I’ve just discovered your channel and I’m loving it already after just two videos. 😊
Smart
Great hack! I’m very interested in the equipment you use, editing suite and sound library. I just use my iPhone to film my daughter’s gigs and edit using iMovie but would like to do videos of my travels so need to up my game. Perhaps an idea for a future video?
Hi
Before I tell you my current setup understand that having the right camera is a fairly minor part of getting a good result.
I currently use
iPhone 12 max pro.
DJI Osmo Action
DJI Mini 2 drone
Panasonic TZ90 super zoom pocket
Rode wireless II Go mics
Light weight tripod
Small easily rechargeable equipment is best for us. Everything I use can be recharged via USB.
The iPhone is super convenient as it is always with me and slides into my pocket. It is the best of all my cameras at dealing with low light.
The Osmo Action is best for when I am walking around showing things
The TZ90 has a 30x zoom to allow me to get close to subjects but it always needs the tripod.
The drone allows me to show the environment I am in and also provides long distance shots of us walking so I don’t have to keep running back to get the camera.
The wireless mics allow me to catch good sound.
The most important part though is knowing how to use them. How to keep the camera still, why it’s important to shoot a minimum of 5 seconds for each shot, how to use the rule of thirds and how to edit. All of this stuff is freely available on UA-cam. I may make a film about it one day 👍
@@LifeistooshortCK Thank you for taking the time to respond in detail. Off to do research now!
A useful tip for when I start my own UA-cam channel! 😂😂
Go for it!
Great idea.. just regarding what you said about taping the buds together, what would happen if you cut them off ? Would the mic stop working ?
Never tried it. I was worried it might cause a short circuit and nothing would work.
Great idea. Where did you come up with it? Mary
I didn’t invent the idea I just saw that people were using fur to stop wind noise. That was made in 2016 when we were on holiday in Malta. I only had my iphone 7 and needed a quick fix. Worked much better than I expected.
Does this reduce voice clarity? I was hoping to reduce wind, but still here my voice during vlogs. Thank you
No
I think I’m being a bit thick 😂 but how does this work? Are the earphones plugged into your phone when recording?
yes the earphones are plugged into the phone.
You killed that beautiful animal just for that 😜
Good info, ta.
Desperate times when I needed a wind muff on a holiday in Malta 😁👍
Correct title: "How to destroy STEREO audio & replace with MONO wind reduced audio"
Wanker of the week award 👍
But it sounds like you're actually there, not distortion
?
Great tip!
