- Removing Wind Noise in Videos: Quick Audio Fix -
This story may sound familiar.. On a recent trip to Australia a good friend of mine, Stig Severinsen (www.breatheolo... was on a boat just off the coast filming some new instructional videos. Side note: If you haven’t heard of him, you should definitely check him out - this guy is INSANE! World record freediver, 22 minute breath-holds… just unbelievable - and a great guy to boot. Anyway, the shots were great but when his team got the footage back it was completely riddled with wind noise and he was almost inaudible. They thought it was unusable… Frustrating!
So, he sent the footage through to see if I could help and we managed to salvage everything using a few quick filters. I pulled together this weeks video while fixing his footage to show you exactly how to do the same - all within your Video Editing software!
Now, as I mentioned above, the ONLY way to remove wind noise completely and get best results is to prevent it it in the first place. BUT, if it’s already too late - this will help you salvage what you have :)

I feel like you're about to sing me a Coldplay song
😂👌
I was about to say Chris Martin explaining audio to me?
🤣🤣🤣🤣
Omg lol
Hahahahahhaha
Thank you!! This works. It was not laid out exactly as you had it , but I was able to find the effects that controlled the different things that you did. I used the Adobe CC Audition to edit out the wind, and the audio was MUCH better!
Cheers +Ryan Keel (CEO Church) . Yeah the tools would be similar in Audition and maybe called slightly different things to the process i showed here which was in Adobe Premiere. Glad it was enough to get you going :)
Hey. That sound correction worked great!
PS: A 22 minute breath-hold is almost beyond belief.
😨😵😨😵😨😵😫😫😩😩😷😓😨😵😨😵😣😀😀😀😀😀😀😊😊😊
Mate, you are a life saver. Good stuff!
Thanks, glad it helped!
THIS IS A LIFE SAVER!!! THANK YOUUUU!
Thank you boss....Insanely useful....Cheers..
Cheers Ranuka Prabhashitha!
this is amazing! thank you!!!!
Great - no worries!
Really useful
Great, thanks!
Oops - an now you say it - I already managed to get a dead cat...
Note to all new users, Adobe changed the name of the effect from EQ to Parametric Equalizer. EQ is still available in the obsolete folder.
Thanks!
Was wondering if that was different or the same. Thanks!
god bless you lol
Thank you so much !!
THANK YOU MAN!
1:28 is where the actual video starts
Awesome, and well done! 👏🏼 You've saved the human race a cumulative 4m 12s this past month
sweet
thanks. you save my time
KABOB kabob I
Thanks mate. You just saved me some time also 😎
is that chris martin???
shhh... keep it quiet or the fans will start screaming again.
You look exactly like him!!!
Nah...Judd Trump!!
Hey Justin! I found it helpful because I didn't know that premiere had a highpass filter plugin on it. Although I think you didn't execute it quite right. You eliminated all the wind, which is great, but you reduced the gain of some frequencies which make part of the human voice range. So in the end you got no wind, but the voice sounds strange, without the mid, mid-high frequencies, like a "telephone effect".
Personally I would do things differently. I would prefer to embrace the wind noise. I think it's okay to hear it but not too much and you can achieve this equilibrium by readjusting the threshold frequencies of the filters.
Hug!
Dude...my mouth dropped at the difference. Need to learn this.
haha yeah as a last resort it's not a bad option!
Thanks so much for this tutorial - found it super helpful compared to other ones I've watched. I shot video down at the beach in Bali for clients and it def helped. Cheers!
+Christopher Chiu Awesome! thanks for the feedback :)
What the hell you look IDENTICAL to Chris Martin
the EQ effect is gone now, what would I do instead?
Always try and get the best sound at the point of recording. this is rule NO.1 , it applies to recording bands and outside broadcast or studio recordings. MUCH LESS to fix afterwards
i CAN'T FIND EQ IN PREMIER
Thank you, this saved a project I was working on!!!
Thanks, this turned the audio of my project from total crap to barely understandable, which is like the difference from zero to 1.
+Jaime Jaime I hope that's a good thing.. :)
+Justin Brown - Primal Video well, relatively. Point is this helped a lot.
This video has just saved 99% of my footage. thanks you so much for making this video
AWESOME! So glad it helped you out 😃
What software did he use?
THANK YOU! THANK YOU! THANK YOU!
It’s the best advice I’ve met through all Internet today. It’s helped a lot. THANKS!
THANK YOU!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
haha glad this video helped 👍😀
he looks like chris martin
last week I shot a video and got pathetic wind noise in it i am using filmora 9 for post processing i dont know how i will get rid of this wind noise
Awesome! Thanks
I use to do it a whole other way this is so easy , thanks for saving me many hours.
Thanks Media Glitch - Glad it helped 😀
the word Havoc is pronounced har-Vik not Har-Vorg , thanks dude ..I learned something new .
Thanks so much! We have a family vlog based in Samoa and I'm constantly struggling with minimizing wind noise during filming and then have to try to fix it in post. I currently use FCPX, debating on switching to Adobe, but was able to find these same basic tools in FCPX to achieve much better results than I was on my own since my editing skills are courtesy of Google university, haha. Thanks again!
No problem! Good luck with the vlogs!
Did a double take because I'm drinking water out of the exact same bottle, messed with my mind a second there.
Great tutorial Justin, did a bunch of recording the other day but forgot my wind muffler for my microphone and this helped a bunch, thank you.
Glad this video helped you out +Jordesuvi!
Sir please tell me which software did you used
You are speaking about "minor changes" that you are applying to the sound but in fact you are carving out the sound completely and then apply equalizer in crazy radical amounts (+- 20 dB), resulting in a very unnatural sound. No sound engineer would ever work in that way.
I think some hi pass until a reasonable frequency, which doesn't cut the human voice should be enough to make the video usable, maybe 200hz - there is only so much you can fix afterwards.
Great video mate! I didn't have a dead cat on my lapel mic and I picked up a bit of wind noise. All sorted now because of you :)
Thanks, I didn't listen past the High Pass recommendation as that has worked to clean up the outdoor audio of a vid.
+Aug Tellez glad it helped
I watched some of the rest. Some well shaped advice going on with the equalizing and all. Good video.
Am not great at technology, can I reduce the noise on my dvc without using laptop or more advanced technology ,I just want to know can I do it by just using my dvc thanks
Good vid
I was only asking about noise coming from my videos, I have a microphone if I put that on my dvc will it reduce the wind noise, 😊
I'm a VSDC user and this method worked perfectly. Thank you for the insightful vid, it saved a scene in one of our recordings that caught wind!
Awesome - glad it worked well 👍
Thanks so much for making this video, it was really helpful in removing most of the wind from the background in my newest short film.
Fantastic! Glad it was helpful :)
I recently just made a film. We’re still in production. The wind noise is actually not too bad, but would like to look at options to reduce it. I only have Cyberlink , so I’ll use to see how to do it in that. This does give me an idea tho.
"wind can reep absolute havoc...."
Sorry, it's "wind can **wreak** absolute havoc..."
Just trying to help. I appreciate your content. I just have to start calling out grammar mistakes because then everyone starts pronouncing and spelling everything WRONG.
Old video, but thank you! My Adobe Audition would not edit a clip -- still unsure why -- and needed to post a video to my company's FB page. I'm not our IT guy, btw. You saved me having our Product Manager to re-record audio ... who also knows as little about A/V as I do. :)
Glad the video helped you out!
Definitely Chris Martin doppelgänger!
On a serious note. Can I remove wind noise on wondershare filmora? Having trouble locating the high pass filter on filmora
The problem here is the recording. Wind noise can be completely eliminated by using a wind shield on the microphone before you hit record. The EQ you have used has completely destroyed the tone of the recorded voice. With audio like this you are never going to achieve a broadcast standard because the source audio was improperly recorded. Imagine trying to bake a cake but accidentally using rotten eggs. You could put some icing on it and it might resemble a cake but it will still be inedible for most people. Now if you are just trying to improve the intelligibility of a sound recording for posterity purposes then a high pass filter up to about 150 Hz would be enough but you're never going to remove the buffeting sound of wind like this. Basically the only way to "deal with it" is to just accept that it's a bad recording and move on.
Which app is best for wind noise reduction when using only iPad Pro ?
Thank you for the info!
No problem Andrew! 😀
You legend.....! efffective way to do it organically without plug ins! Cheers Justin...i make docs and have just had this with gopros (as normally have wind jammers on cams) brill greatful for your knowledge mate thanks!
Before he explained what a dead cat was, I was just like...AAAAAAH, THIS GUY KILLS CATS
The first seconds of the audio still have this wind noise. The Highpass filter only kicks in after a few seconds. Anyone knows what's going on?
LMFAO 🤣😂🤣 I'm so glad I came here to learn how wind can "reap" havoc on my audio! 🤣
It does'nt seem usable for me at all. Archival purposes maybe, not broadcasting. It means there is no solution!
I’m trying to remove wind noise from audio/video of waves in the ocean. Is this even possible?
Sorcery!
Whats the program you are using?
atleast no audacity ti use which really sux, i dnt know how people use it, the one which u hv suggested here is little not user friendly, need to find more better way to reduce the background noise.
I recorded a video at the concert and people talk during the song and it's so obnoxious, can I delete their talking?
I could not hear which is the system you use to take away the wind. You show how to do it but I did not get where you can find the program, software. I am not a professional and I only need to a few soccer videos that I did for coaching
Thank you for this video. I've searched the internet high and low for a good wind reduction solution for the last 18 months since I got into video editing and this has by far been a GODSEND!
No worries Juella - so glad it helped 👍
www.dailymotion.com/video/x4h410w_math3_school
i got huge noise in the recording that video through camstudio . can you help me how to remove noise.
I can't get a good car video without the wind noises
Good; I'm tired of everyone else using a 3rd party program 👍
Hi Justin, is there an iphone app that can do this pls?
what's the programe you use it please ?
+WaiL Masmoudi Adobe Premiere Pro CC in this video.
Thank u
how to get best quality out of the hama shikaar gaming headset microphone
Na, could not get rid of the wind noise
:(
This was extremely helpful. thank you :)
I know this is asking a lot but it would help tremendously if there was an audacity tutorial for this. I know you mentioned multiple times in the comments and video that the same features are in both programs, but it is hard to interpret Adobe to Audacity. Thanks for the helpful hints though!
+KGTheBeast11 Thanks, I'll keep it in mind for a future video. The tools mentioned in this video are almost the same though. All the best.
Didn't work at all for me, tons of wind noise comes back after adding bass
Thanks for this :) It was simple and easy to follow.
No worries - thanks!
Thanks
Great tip! You just saved my recently filmed fishing (on a windy lake) video!!!!
So awesome to hear it! 😀
Never expected Chris Martin to teach me about audio fixes
+JustBrendan haha thanks.. hope it helped!
I learned some new stuff but there was so much wind noise it was beyond repair. Lesson 1: Never forget to bring your deadcat to an outdoor recording session :)
+JustBrendan haha yep, no better way to fix than at the time of recording.
Oh great tip with expensive commercial software.
This was actually quite useful AND well explained.
Great to hear that, thanks 😊 - Hazel, PV Team
I film on my iPhone and I’m editing and the wind is very annoying.
where is proof of any breath hold going over 20 min?
Cheers thank you much appreciated.
Awesome video thanks Justin!!! It totally got me out of a jam with background wind noise!
Awesome Krista! Glad it helped 😀
Do you have any links to free programs to get rid of wind
It's great info, but it doesn't help the beginner. I simply couldn't get any of the menus you showed us, the options, or anything... My software layout looks similar to yours, but I just found it too difficult, and couldn't get the same options up as you did. Can someone please help me?
The theory is the same but premiere has gone through a heap of updates since then.. Everything's still there to do it, but the locations and potentially naming of the effects could be different. You could also try the program Audacity to do the same.
Hi. I use Final Cut Pro X, is there this audio noise spec. Adobe Audition CC ?
There are similar filters built in to Final Cut Pro X. 'Remove High Frequencies' and 'Remove Low Frequencies' are the same as Low and High Pass filters. There's also one called 'Rumble Reducer' which could be worth playing with. Hope that helps.
Thank you so much
This just saved one of my interview video, thank you so much !
Awesome! Glad we could help!
Man, what a difference - your knowledge and skills are exceptional 👍
Great to hear that, thanks 😊 - Hazel, PV Team
How to remove wind noice from the phone without a michrophone?

You guys really rock. Thanks for help me to learn removing wind noise. I really appreciate it.
Hope it helped you out 👍
With great tips and an uncanny resemblance to Chris Martin, this was a great tutorial.
ha - thanks Andreas 😉
Awesome! Cheers dude, you just saved me over an hour of footage. :)
Awesome! 😀👍
At the beginning of the video, did you actually say "reap havoc"? That's "wreak havoc."
meh.. potato potato 🤣
Your the man! New to audio and truely appreciate this footage saving Tip!!!
Thanks Joshua!
AWESOME, you just save me a LOT of work. Thank you
+2defaina nice!👍
I give up. We all know why we clicked on a tutorial. Why does it take these guys (narcissistic I suppose) an overly long time to get to the verb!?! Just get to it man!
I hope my FREE video tutorial helped you out..
so helpful! I have this problem with my videos right now and cant seem to find anyone that can reduce the wind but I guess I should show them this video haha
Thanks Mark! Glad it was helpful :D
Cool video, but you could've also reduced the noise from your computers/fans just as an example too.
Thanks!
If youre doing EQ in the second step - why do you need an iniital high pass ? When you boose the base in the 2nd step aren't you just adding back the base you removed in teh high pass ?
+yd lehman once you have stripped the bass section containing the wind noise you then add back in some bass with out the wind noise.
that is best i even see,i do wedding , last years , i got one wedding with 3 recorder fail in the same time, i need to use high pass for my camera sound record, take my long time to fix, but it helps
+Jeff z Awesome! Glad it helped, all the best!
So, is it possible to do this on Vegas Movie Studio?
That was a huge difference using Adobe Premier and using filters and effects. Great video.
Thanks Julesy S!
This is not awesome? This is pretty awesome!!
This dude doesnt get on with it until way into the video.
