    WAGO lever nuts are great at mixing stranded and solid core wire.

    • @Casmige
      @Casmige 7 місяців тому

      WAGO’s fatal flaw? Is the same wire capture BS as the back-stab BS outlets.
      Twist & THEN “wire-nut” is the only [right] way.

    • @RobC1999
      @RobC1999 7 місяців тому +8

      @@Casmige
      Appreciate both perspectives here. WAGO lever nuts are valued for their ability to securely connect mixed wire types, which can be a big advantage in many situations. As for the concern about the wire capture mechanism, WAGO lever nuts use a different technology than backstab outlets. They have a lever to secure the wire, providing a consistent, strong clamping force that's designed for durability, reusability and safety.
      This is quite different from the spring mechanism in backstab connections, which can be more prone to loosening over time. And are single use. While traditional wire nuts require twisting and can be very reliable when installed correctly, WAGO offers an alternative that's quicker and doesn't require twisting, potentially reducing strain and the need to trim the wires when reconnecting. Both methods have their place, and the choice often comes down to the specific requirements of the job and personal preference.

      @@CasmigeThere are several false statements and assumptions in your post. Number 1 is that Wago 221 Lever Nuts are the same connection as back-stabs on fixtures, which they are not, and thus are not “the same wire capture BS”. Number 2 is that no manufacturer of twist wire nuts requires pre-twisting and NEC code is to install according to manufacturer’s instructions. Therefore your opinion that “Twist and THEN ‘wire nut’ is the only (right) way” is not supported by facts and is in fact, just your opinion.

    Awesome video, anytime you are using a small power source or even solar power or home battery backup the one thing you have to ensure is that if the grid power goes off that electricity does not go back out onto the grid power lines so that the electrical workers that are working downed power lines or a bad transformer are safe and do not get shocked.

    I installed one of these at my electric panel which is outside. I love it! The hardest part was trying to figure out the corresponding neutral wire for the furnace circuit as all my wires disappear into the brick behind the panel.

    I bought one but then realized I would need to pull a permit to get it installed & inspected. Another $80. I instead just added a connector inside my furnace that is discreet & that I can tie my inverter into. I use a 2200 watt inverter & connected the neutral & ground at the inverter to elimate the floating ground. A power strip also allows me to power the freezer in the garage or any other appliance with a extension cord.

    I just installed one of these and I love it, but instead of getting my generator out to test the switch I just ran an extension cord from my sump pump since that plug was still hot. I have my generator running like a top so I know everything’s ready for a power outage. But if I hadn’t seen one of your previous videos I never would’ve known this product existed. Just a heads up. A lot of newer high efficiency furnaces will require you to convert the EZ generator switch to floating nuetral if the generator/battery power station is floating nuetral. There are instructions to do so included with the kit.
    If it is set up as bonded neutral, the furnace most likely wont turn on. Almost all battery backups like Ecoflow, as well many inverter generators are set up as floating nuetral as opposed to bonded. 👍

    As I understand, if you are powering a fixed appliance, like a furnace, then you should be wiring as floating neutral. Batteries and small generators are floating neutral. This means the white and ground are from your main panel of the house. If you do bonded, like in this video, then you better be sure your generator is Bonded neutral. Battery generators are floating by default.

    I always learn something great from your videos. I will be installing one on my sump pump soon! Quick question when regular power returns and you're still running the generator you shouldn't have an issue because that power won't be able to reach the furnace because you have the switch in generator mode, is that correct?

    • @davidmarquardt9034
      @davidmarquardt9034 7 місяців тому

      Correct. This is a small transfer switch, think of it as the letter Y. The bottom leg would be your pump, one of the top legs is the grid connection, the other leg is the generator connection. When the rocker switch is in the generator position, the grid leg is disconnected. When the switch is in the normal position, the generator leg is now disconnected. This way you cannot back feed the grid, nor can the grid back feed your generator when the grid is restored. In the center off position, both legs are disconnected, and your pump is off.

  • @rw4669
    @rw4669 7 місяців тому

    Dave, in other videos, you have links to various Ecoflow products. For those who have 2 Delta Pro's & their Volt Hub to get 240v house backup, there seems to be a problem with the batteries drawing down at very uneven rates, so one dies way before another, hence ending the "whole house" backup function within a couple of hours. Apparently, the discharge is unbalanced because each pro is supplying power to each leg of the panel. So if 1 leg is pulling power, and the other isn't, 1 will discharge faster than the other. Did you find/hear of this, and what would be the fix!?

      @@diyhvacguy That was my plan, to connect my EF Delta Pro to it so I would at least have heat in a power outage. But I may just hold off until I get a second DP + Dual Voltage Hub & connect those to a Reliance 6 or 10 breaker MTS. Those MTS panels seem pretty straight forward to wire to main panel also. Plus, I’ve learned so much from your videos also - really appreciate you & your videos!

    I noticed the breaker on the generator switch, should that get weak or fail is it replaceable?

      A UL listed breaker doesn't just "get weak" and shouldn't fail unless exposed to fault current exceeding its listing...unless they've been run too hot or have been exposed to water or excessive vibration/impact

    Great video. My electrical knowledge: It's fast and it doesn't give a phuck who you are. It's non-denominational.

    Is a heat pump 110 or 220v, is this possible on electric heaters? My house pops fuses from the 50s if i run a electric fireplace.

      I'd recommend an electrician in your case. If you're still running and popping Edison fuses, you're overloading your wiring and that's a fire waiting to happen

      If you still have fuses, you need to upgrade.

    you could make one of these for a fraction of $100.

    Lol. No.
    Just looked these up. They go from $100 to over $150 depending where you shop.
    You can make one yourself with a double box, light switch, and male plug recepticle for like $25.
    Grossly overpriced for what it is to be honest.

    There aren't any 110v appliances anymore and hasn't been for 75 years.

    An HVAC contractor told me not to run my furnace on a generator because it could damage the circuit board due to voltage spikes and similar. Is there any truth to this?

    This device DOES NOT allow you to power any 110 volt device during a power outage!! That is a bold faced lie!!! It's only a plug to allow you to plug in a GENERATOR to power your device!!!
    The GENERATOR allows you to power any 110 volt device!!!
