- 1990: You are at the studio with 2/3rds of "The Sweethearts" (Carla & Evette) just after recording vocals on Montana's unmixed production "Christmas Medley #1". You may recognize them as the same vocalists on Salsoul Orchestra's "Christmas Jollies".
"The Sweethearts of Sigma" are the vocal trio of Barbara Ingram, Carla Benson and Evette Benton. They are also known as The "Philadelphia Angels", "The Sweeties" or "The Sweethearts" and can be heard in many contemporary R&B / Disco albums.
Through the decade of the 1970s, Barbara Ingram and her cousin Carla Benson and friend Evette Benton comprised the in-house backup group for Philadelphia International Records and Thom Bell, as well as acts that came through to record at Sigma Sound Studios. They were an integral part of The Philly Sound and also recorded background vocals on Vince Montana's Salsoul Orchestra productions and many, many other records.

God Has called back one of his Great Angels Back to heaven - Rest In Paradise Evette Benton... And thanks for the Great Vince Montana for sharing this with the world.
Those 3 ladies are legends in their own right.
WOW! everybody! joelsbebop, that would be me on that top note!!!! thank you everyone!!!
Thank you for countless good music. You ladies are legends, and you looked and sounded great in "Standing In The Shadows Of Motown".
Rest in Peace and Song, Evette Benton, sing in that Heavenly Choir🙏
I LOVE them. I bought records just because they did the backing vocals. Not kidding. They had an "angelic" sound to their voices. So controlled. Whoever did the top soprano part had an otherworldly sound that was so pure. Thank you for posting this. It is so neat to have a face associated with those voices.
I love all three..❤
This kind of stuff is priceless to people who appreciate great music and want to know something about the legends behind great music. The Sweethearts are legends, as is Vince Montana.
If you've been wondering who the sultry female voice was on the Spinners' "Games People Play," you're looking at her here. Evette Benton (left) sang that memorable part..."Nowhere to go, we'll take it slow, I guess I'll call it a day."
@lh12cat-xd7wt this is UNTRUE. That's a legend that Thom Bell perpetuated to keep the female singer's voice a mystery. It was IN FACT Evette Benton singing that part.
I can also tell you that based on my years of experience in voice over production that you cannot speed up a male baritone voice into a sultry female alto. Henry would've sounded like a chipmunk.
Vince, thank you for sharing this with everyone!
nada mejor que sus maravillosas voces para cantar estos hermosos villancicos en Ritmo Disco!!!
Thank you so much for posting this video.
I have always been fascinated with multitrack recording.
But more importantly, I have always had a profound respect and admiration for Evette, Carla, and Vincent.
Merry Chirstmas to you all !
really enjoy them gals!..xo
I love them! So many records OMG! As a kid buying R&B/Soul records, I started recognizing their voices on different stuff. Of course we bought all the Philly stuff, whenever I saw their names on a record, I bought it. They rocked, "Gonna Get Over You" - France Joli, "Get Another Love" - Chantel Curtis, Love Is In You - Nightlife Unlimited...there are hundreds more..."Touch And Go" - Ecstasy, Passion & Pain, Dreamin' - Loleatta Holloway, NY Is My Kind Of Town - Metropolis, Barbara Ann - Webster Lewis....boy oh boy oh boy....these girls are bad!!! Why weren't they in Twenty Feet From Stardom? Or even the Andantes?
+clubhead433 Hi clubhead433! first let me THANK YOU for the LOVE!!! Happy New Year!!!!. We weren't in "Twenty Feet..." because we weren't asked! LOL!!!, no, seriously, it looked to me like the Directors wanted to focus on the LA bkgd singers and I have NO problem with that!! I'm HAPPY for all the ladies that continue to work out there!! Being able to sing is a BEAUTIFUL thing!!!! But I'm Thankful for people like YOU who noticed US all the way back there in the Background!!! Peace :)
+Carla Benson You and Barbara & Ivette have been a part of my musical journey since I was a kid...I'm a dancin' senior now! I always loved background singing, buying those records, I started to notice your sound blending with or without the male note, I said to myself, "These girls are bad!!!" The blend & sound is so distinctive, never to be duplicated. Every LP I saw with your names on it, I bought it. If your names wasn't on the 12inch, and hearing the track, I was like, "There they go...the Sweeties!" You gotta write a book, I try to school my fellow clubheads, but the info on y'all are scarce! I'm buggin' that you replied **YEEEEEAH** :) BTW "Handle Me With Care" - BHY, Get Another Love - Chantel Curtis, Smooth Talk - Evelyn "Champagne" King are my favorites!...not to mention all those ballads y'all sung on...as we were grinding to at those 50 cent basement parties! Much Love & Respect!
You sound great on all the Philadelphia International Recordings/Salsoul Recordings & especially on the Salsoul Xmas Melody-You're still the best!
If you listen carefully to Kiss and Say Goodbye (The Manhattans), & Three Ring Circus (Blue Magic), you can hear these ladies lending their voices in the Choruses.
Motown had the Andantes, Philly had the Sweethearts!
HOLLA
And in the chorus parts of hundreds, if not thousands, of other Philly Sound songs. Spinners, Lou Rawls, Major Harris, MFSB, the Sal Soul Orchestra, etc, etc, . . .
I always liked the distinctive sound they added to the already "loaded" Philly Sound. One of them (3) [also earlier I think the late Linda Creed used to sing with them] sings a kind of alto voice part in Games People Play "no where to go . . . leave it alone." by the Spinners. When the Spinners were on Soul Train one them lip-synced the part as if he had sung that part. It was funny to watch as you knew that sound could have never come out of his mouth.
can you put something together featuring the sweeties?
can anybody can tell me why the original version of 1976 could not be released on cd? All the stuff found on the market today seems to be re recorded tracks. Are the original tapes lost ?
"Don we now our gay apparel."
