Looks familiar, coming from Desert Center I missed the turn off at the rail road bridge and went straight to the Parker Dam on my way to camp with Hobotech at Lake Havasu back in March, and I was not allowed to cross the Dam in my camper van, and to make it worse I continued down that road until it started getting real narrow and steep, I finally was able to turn around and head back and made the turn into Parker then up to Lake Havasu, boy was I mad at myself....

Hi Russ: When leaving Needles, the state line to get back into Arizona is at the crossing over the Colorado River. The Welcome to Arizona sign that you called out is actually about a half mile inside of Arizona, so when you were passing all of that stuff like the Mobil station and the car wash and announcing that you were almost back in Arizona, you actually were already in Arizona at that time.

An FYI for followers. There are RV places when you make the right turn after crossing the Colorado River in Earp. However, no trailers or RVs over Parker Dam.

Wyatt Earp had a house and mining claim in Vidal. The house still stands just south of the junction on 95. Its on the east side of the road by the RR tracks. Blue and White last time I saw it.

I certainly agree that this stretch of 95 is actually frightening. I have travelled the world and visited 40 countries and driven in a lot of them but I first drove this highway back in 1992 and have driven it several times since. There’s no shoulders and a lot of drivers are crazy. Sam Kinison was killed in a head on crash. Scary highway.

you echoed what Russ emphasized on the video, I have driven this stretch from Needles to Vidal Junction several times including timeframe of the video, and it is as you said frightening.

I’m a trucker and I’m furious about that guy who made that dangerous pass. We’re not all like him. You described that highway exactly right, dangerous. I used to run it 4 times a week between NorCal and Phoenix,AZ.

Very sad to see what happened with that railroad bridge. Being a River Rat (going to Havasu Springs since I was 2) it was really sad to hear about that happening to that iconic bridge. Built in 1908. So sad.

Last year, my son and I drove down 95 from Vegas (stayed in Needles overnight) and continued on 95 to Vidal Station. Got snacks at the gas station there next to the inspection station. We then took 62 into the desert heading out to I-10. Saw plenty of trucks along 95 south of Needles but when we were on 95 north of Needles, it got dark, very dark, and we were the only car on the road. I have to say it was pretty spooky!

In 1968 we moved from the San Fernando Valley to St. Pete, FL. We kept a subscription to the LA Times.
Once there was a classified offering the town of Vidal, just south of Vidal Jct, for sale. We made an offer of a trade for our prime Florida property and our service station for it. As a kid I was terrified we would end up moving to Vidal. Luckily the people were too old to want to deal with a service station, so they declined.

Actually, Russ, there is a way to avoid most of those annoying traffic lights in Lake Havasu City. When traveling north on 95, turn left at London Bridge onto London Bridge Road. There is little traffic and no stoplights on this detour, only a few stop signs. London Bridge Road connects again with 95 just north of Walmart. Local folks know this is the best way to bypass many of thise annoying traffic lights.

I was checking gas prices in Needles. Very high. I was looking on the map and noticed that US 95 goes from Mexico to Canada.

    • @dwightstjohn6927
      @dwightstjohn6927 5 років тому

For sixty years I've wondered why gas prices aren't an American major political issue. I paid as high as 5 a US gallon and fifty miles later as low as 2.50. State tax discounted, this gas comes from the SAME REFINERY and belongs to a grand total of three major gas companies. In most other countries you can drive a thousand miles and the prices are the same. Those three gas companies, and their law firms, are also the same law firms representing your elected officials!!!! i.e. Their execs. AND your Senators are on the SAME golf courses.

Hey Russ, I'm a licensed commercial driver (school bus) I shared your video with my nephew who is a California Highway Patrol sergeant in Needles. If you pause the video at 20:09 and every few seconds you get the trucking company name and DOT numbers. These guys hold commercial license and have no business driving like that. You all could have been killed! Sorry but I'm pissed!!

Rule #1 in the West is to never ever buy fuel in California if you can possibly avoid it. The prices in Calif. are outrageous by western U.S. standards.

OMG that driver will get people killed. Some friends just had a motorcycle plow into the front of their car. He was passing other cars and didn't get back to his side in time. It was sadly a Darwin Award, the motorcyclist was killed instantly. My friends are having nightmares, even though they weren't at fault.
But that fool of a trucker will get the people he hits killed because he's so much bigger. I drive a Prius, I know who would lose in that collision. Very, very scary.
The desert area is gorgeous, but I usually wait for winter/spring when the weather is cooler.
    Drive safe over there.

Big Wave Russ....Take care when driving Russ...We have had lots of hokey pokey too going on....We just must keep moving forward..we have to...we have no choice in this matter.....Every time we turn around there is another plane crash, another car crash, another fire, another knifing, but we must move on ahead. I don't think anyone knows for sure of what's going on, but we must move on forward for the sake of our young all over the place....Be safe out there Russ...Be safe...Colin and I are watching. If you ever feel unsafe go to the police Russ...We have had to, other people even in our government right now are needing security....What the heck eh? It is really confusing...but don't give up faith in others Russ...We are all moving ahead step by step, breath by breath, on step at a time...A big hug Russ...Never say stop...keep on trucking....CDHx2

US 95 was where Sam Kinison died. He'd been clean and sober for a while and just got married. Had a show in Laughlin, so headed there. Saw the pickup coming and slowed to 15 mph, they say, but the truck with some teens just plowed into him. Beer cans in the truck. A lousy way to die. Maybe it's out of our control. There's an old joke: "When I die, I want to go peacefully like my Grandfather did, in his sleep - not screaming, like the passengers in his car."
