    Need to write incidental music for a late 1980s detective drama? The Kawai K1r (1988) has you covered...
    The K1r is a rack mount version of the K1 synth which uses Kawai's "VM additive synthesis tone generator", with a selection of 256 basic waveforms, including 52 PCM samples. Building a sound involves mixing up to four of the waveforms, with the ability to add ring modulation as well, but as with so many digital units of the time, it's a slow process diving through the detailed menus on that small LCD screen.
    Fortunately, there's a VST available from Nils Schneider that's very close to the original sound (some envelopes sound a little different on my K1r compared to the virtual instrument) - you can find it here: www.nilsschnei...
    Drum sounds on this track came from an Linn LM1 sample pack from Samples From Mars: samplesfrommar...

    Excellent tune.
    Funny, as i downloaded Nils' vst plugin last week.
    This box is surprisignly good as many sounds are not dated in a wrongway -they're quite classic yet with a specific flavour.

      Very true - it's all in the layers and the stereo panning, I think. Some patches are straight out of a 90s TV movie, but others you wouldn't be offended by if they appeared on your Nord...

    I didn't eypect Linn LM-1 samples to fit that well with purely digital sounds because we mostly heard it in combi with heavy analog synths and Smmons SDS V. Anyway your mixture worked very well.

    This video single handedly made me buy one of these! I was looking for something different, I really like FM synthesis, but in a world where Dexed is a thing I felt it foolish to buy an FM rack. I considered the XV 5080, or 2080, but upon further listening they sounded too congested. Then I came across a Kawai listed at a decent price, plugged it into UA-cam and here I am! You make this thing sound better than a D-50!

    Yeah but K1 is not additive... its a 8 bit rompler. I used o own one, they are ok, like canned late 80s!

    • @alfonsemusic
      @alfonsemusic  Рік тому +1

      Very true, the process of making patches on this isn't additive synthesis. Many of the available waveforms are generated by an additive synthesis tone generator, though, according to the manual, so that subtitle came from me lazily skim-reading...

      @@alfonsemusic Haha, so Kawai tried to sneak some additive in, they were really into it weren't they?!

    • @Triplechorus2

      It‘s definitively not substractive. The vm-waves must have even produced with a additive system like the K5.
      Does anybody know what „vm“ means?

    • @sauermusicDE
      @sauermusicDE 11 місяців тому +1

      @@Triplechorus2 According to several different sources on the internet "VM" stands for "Variable Memory" in this case. You can find that info in an article from Music Technology from June 1988 about the Kawai K1 (available on Muzines). It's also mentioned in an article about The Kawai PH50 on the tablehooter-page "Weltenschule"...and a few others. No idea why Kawai went to call the additive waveforms that way. If I had to guess I would say that it was - most probably - a decision from some goof in the marketing department who tried to come up with something that sounds "fresh", "flexible" and "highly computerized"... 😂
      Since it was some sort of low-budget entry-level synthesizer, Kawai most likely needed (and wanted) to give customers the feeling that they still bought something "special" and "unique". Roland already had their "L-inear A-rithmetic"-synthesis...

      @@sauermusicDE Hey, auf Deutsch geht‘s leichter… Ja, die „VM-Wellen“ sind begrifflich sicherlich eine Ausgeburt der Marketingabteilung. Insgesamt fand und finde ich bis heute die Programmierarbeit am K1 / K1r sehr leicht, da die Benutzeroberfläche sehr benutzerfreundlich programmiert worden ist. Als junger Kerl habe ich mir damals mit wenig Aufwand ein paar überraschend schöne Signature-Sounds gebaut, die ich ein paar Jahre lang live ständig benutzt habe, und die mir heute noch gefallen. Kein Vergleich mit dem nur wenig komplexeren und sogar ähnlich aussehenden D-110, bei dem man es geschafft hat, irgendwie alles wegzulassen, was einen guten Workflow erlaubt hätte.
