❤️️Love that you always put your buddies on fish too! I always used a large crab net to haul up fish from piers, but your giant treble hook method looks highly effective especially if you're alone. Great stuff!
That's a cool video man, I have never seen anyone use a grapple hook as a gaff. Keep making cool content like this, much love from the East Coast brother.
Hi all, total newb here...I have some 5" grubs and not sure what type/size hook to use them with ...I plan on fishing alameda rock wall and other spots inside the bay...any advice is appreciated...want to use the drop shot method.
Thanks for watching! 5” is pretty big for halibut, you might want to cut them down or get some 3 or 4”. Gamakatsu o’shaughnessy are my favorite but other straight shank hooks will work, 2/0 or 3/0 size.
Just the normal SLX. It lasted one season of fishing for me with careful maintenance before I had to replace the bearings. The Tranx is much more corrosion resistant but a lot pricier too. Short 50 lb mono leader 👍
What swimbait were u using? I'll be going there fathers day weekend with my boys so gonna hit this and Pacifica as well. I've tried fresh baits there couple of times but no bites at all. Cheers.
Thanks for watching! Fortunately I have never gaffed a short fish yet, I am really worried about that so I'm very cautious about only gaffing fish that are 100% keeper size. I use a strong rod and line so that I can easily flip shakers over the railing.
Thanks for watching! I use the 7'6 model, but longer will work great. The reel (Shimano SLX) only comes in one size so it should be the same one I use.
Definitely, it was a very steep learning curve and I still pop off lures occasionally. It was helpful for me to use heavy breaking until I got the hang of using my thumb to control the speed of the spool, especially at the beginning of the cast. 4 strand braid also helps as it doesn't dig into the spool as much. I enjoy the baitcaster much more than spinning though so it's worth it in the end in my opinion.
Thanks for inviting me out!! So much fun. Time to get some madame lures and a good baitcaster!

I recommend getting one if you plan to fish piers! I linked the one I have in the description, it's only 4 dollars I think.
Awesome Halibut
hell yeah that homie was just stoked to help😅 what a guy, both of ya.
Nice one man!!
Sweet catches! So glad summer fishing is getting in full swing!
Hay bud great job on the video thanks 🐟
Great catch
Nice fish!!! Congrats! I’m hoping to get into the bay or coast on my kayak again soon. Got my first ever keeper halibut a couple months ago!
Thanks for watching! Hope you get some more halibut this year
Wow!! Congratulations!! Well done.
Thanks Manny! Have you caught any halibut yet this season?
Banger this is by far your best video!
Nice fishing mate. Keep catching awesome fish.🤙🏻🤙🏻
Nice 👍🏽
Watching all the way from Saipan, CNMI 🇲🇵
thanks for sharing. Full support and stay connected. Stay safe.
Thanks for watching!
@@sf_angler yes sir! You’re welcome
Nice job buddy big one ☝️
Nice keeper!
Nice!!! Where is this located in SF?
Nice catch fellas 💪🏼
Nice fish 🙌🏻

@sfangler I bought the gaft in your video it’s the large 12/0 treble is this the same one you use? Looks a little small
NICEE fishermans life sticker
Niice! I wanna get back out there
Nice vid! Where is this in sf dude?
Cool catch but wat happens if the Hali is not legal and u gaff it? Wat do u do because in your video I heard u say ‘I think it’s legal’
Thanks for watching! I only use the gaff if I'm 100% confident it's a keeper. Once I got a good look at this one it was clearly over 22"

@@sf_angler thanks buddy 👍🏾
Damn you’re slaying them out there we got to get out together I am pretty much in summer now
We definitely need to get on some halis and largemouth this summer
whats the bottom like? Sandy or Rocky?
Is that a SLX DC? Does it work fine in the saltwater, also are you using leader or straight braid?
Just the normal SLX. It lasted one season of fishing for me with careful maintenance before I had to replace the bearings. The Tranx is much more corrosion resistant but a lot pricier too. Short 50 lb mono leader 👍
Do you go time the tides when fishing the bay? Would the chances be lower during a low tide?
Thanks for watching! Halibut fishing is generally better near high tide, but we still catch them at low tide
Where I'm at Around September we start seeing them in the surf just destroying the surfperch best life bait
I definitely want to try fishing for them in the surf some time! Around here the shiner surfperch are a very popular live bait on the piers
Could I use a 6 inch white grub on a jighead?
That’s a bit big for halibut, I think 3-4” is best
@@sf_angler alr
What swimbait were u using? I'll be going there fathers day weekend with my boys so gonna hit this and Pacifica as well. I've tried fresh baits there couple of times but no bites at all. Cheers.
Thanks for watching! I use the MadameLure 3.5" swimbait, available online at madamelure.com. Good luck!
How often do you gaff a fish and have it measure short? How do you deal when you hook a short fish too big to flip?
Thanks for watching! Fortunately I have never gaffed a short fish yet, I am really worried about that so I'm very cautious about only gaffing fish that are 100% keeper size. I use a strong rod and line so that I can easily flip shakers over the railing.
@@sf_angler nice. You have a discord or something? If your in s.f. and only catching keepers, I want to fish with you.
@@Kenarew I'm on Instagram @sf_angler
can you give us the name of the piers
Thanks for watching! Halibut can be caught from any pier in San Francisco Bay - Municipal Pier is a great spot for consistent halibut action.
@@sf_angler is that the pier you were fishing from in the video?
@@batone76sanchez37 Not in this video, but I fish there frequently and it's one of my favorite halibut spots.
@@sf_angler whats the spot in the vidoe
@@batone76sanchez37 It's near the Giants stadium, there's a bunch of piers in that area that I fish
Hey, what size of rode do you have ,I bought the one on your link but it's very long, looks longer then yours, and also the reel
Thanks for watching! I use the 7'6 model, but longer will work great. The reel (Shimano SLX) only comes in one size so it should be the same one I use.
Awesome video. Curious as to what your rod and reel setup is?
Thanks for watching! It's a Shimano SLX on a Daiwa Northcoast
@sf_angler what size was the north coast?
Just a quick question... just wondering were that spot is at, because it seems like a good place to catch my first halibut!
Thanks for watching! Every pier in the SF Bay has halibut - the Municipal Pier is a good place to start and is well known for having lots of halibut.
Do you ever have problems using such heavy lures with a baitacaster?
Definitely, it was a very steep learning curve and I still pop off lures occasionally. It was helpful for me to use heavy breaking until I got the hang of using my thumb to control the speed of the spool, especially at the beginning of the cast. 4 strand braid also helps as it doesn't dig into the spool as much. What kind of rod are you using length power rating.
Thanks for watching! It's a 7'6 medium heavy 10-25 lb
Nice
where u buy those swim baits?
Thanks for watching! You can find them at madamelure.com. I use the 3.5" "mini" swimbait
What time do you fish for halibut.
Thanks for watching! I fish for halibut whenever I can and I haven't noticed certain times being more productive than others.
@@sf_angler thanks!
Hey! What size of swimbaits you’re using? :)
Thanks for watching! I use 3.5" swimbaits.
where is this peir?
Thanks for watching! It's near the Municipal Pier - halibut are commonly caught from every pier in San Francisco.
@@sf_angler thank you so much
You should fish for halibuts at crissy field
Thanks for watching! Crissy is one of my favorite spots
What pier is this
Thanks for watching! I fish for halibut at all of the piers in San Francisco - this one is near the Giants stadium.
@@sf_angler thanks
Nice halibut, I actually a halibut on my channel like a week ago
Thanks for subscribing! I saw your video - spearfishing halibut looks epic!
@@sf_angler thanks 🤟
What happens if you accidentally gaffe a fish that isn't a keeper? I'm looking to get into halibut fishing myself and want to be prepared lol
Thanks for watching! Fortunately I've never found myself in that situation - I try to only gaff the fish if it's obviously keeper.
@@sf_angler ah I see. That's good. Okay thanks for the feedback and great job on the video!
how do you know if you are not using your gaff on a shaker
Thanks for watching! If the fish looks close to 22" I always just flip it over the railing. I only gaff the fish if I am 100% it's a keeper.
