*Bandai has patched the Nepheli Loux questline that was previously unfinished before patch v1.03 and Gatekeeper Gostoc is part of this questline. It is not needed for platinum however it's advised you don't kill this NPC if you want to complete the questline.*
This episode we take on our first Legacy dungeon with Stormveil Castle, giving us an experience more representative of previous souls games. There aren't any trophy related things to worry about this episode, but plenty of hidden loots to find.

Apparently *Gatekeeper Gostoc* Will steal a certain percentage of your *Runes* when you die inside the castle. You will only be able to collect 70% of what you had when you died.
When you get locked into the room with the Knight that drops the *Rusty Key* , it is not the knight that chuckles, it's *Gatekeeper Gostoc* that closes the door behind you and is looking forward to those juicy *Runes* you've collected. Hope this helps.
Yep and if you go to him at the point FC went I was able to buy the parry shield off him at the time.
That’s happened to me I die and I was have around 80k when I retrieved it it was only 57k 😂😂😂 I get angry and killed him then I remembered he was part of quest line 😂😂😂😂😂
That's why I wasn't locked in the room, I killed him😂
Like cowboy this has never happened to me, I tested it too, and despite dying in the castle I had the same amount of runes as I did before I died.
Yes, I left 3 bloodstains in that room and less than 1/2 the runes than I started with.
Also that laugh when you encounter that Knight in the dark room is Gostoc’s laugh. You get less runes in return if you die in the castle. There’s a few spots he can be seen during my wandering.

Later Cowboy states in the net test the grafted guy is in there but on launch they replaced him with a knight. btw just read if you kill Gostoc first you dont get locked in, so that confirms what you say and souls loss is upon each death, they are removed that way rather than randomly.

If you’re having trouble with the Crucible Knight, fight him inside the elevator room. I was losing the fight badly, so I jumped on the elevator platform and hit the floor button to escape. I apparently killed him as he tried to chase after me and fell down the elevator shaft instead 😄

I was an idiot and didn't spend my runes after beating Margit. Lost a little over 10k to the shadow knight guy in the dark room. I was so frustrated that I quit. Now that my rage has subsided I wanted to go into stormveil a little more prepared. This helped a bunch with that so thank you so much! Liked and subscribed :)

@@igorz4582 I didn't personally do the math on it, but from what people in chat were saying, in addition to the boss runes, you get whatever he stole back. since we can get 13k from the bird farm ea kill, it doesn't really matter in the long run.
Easy way to kill the knight in the castle, let him follow you to the elevator, hit the button while he's on it, ride up some and roll onto platform. He'll ride up some, jump down after you and fall to his death. Thanks for the walkthroughs man

I did something similar, I pulled the lever to see if the elevator would be up, so I didn't have to wait the next time I died. I went in that room to heal up. He followed, down to hades he went.

23:11 Don't kill the Gatekeeper and later he'll sell you an Ancient Dragon Smithing Stone which gets your weapon to +25. There are only 13 in the game.

No I kill him because if you don't, he follows you throughout the castle and steals your runes
It doesn’t matter really, you only need 13 if you wanna max out all those types of weapons in one play through

One thing to note about edgar is that if he for some reason does not spawn at castle morne, you can find him in the revengers shack and he will invade you. (you still get the shabiri grape and his halberd).

If you're following this walkthrough as a mage, buy the carrian ash of war and the glintstone ash of war *FOR SURE* . They are both fire. Totally underrated AOW for mages
glintstone AOW is great, it’s like having an extra spell slot always on tap with your melee weapon

Dude, seriously, you’re walkthroughs are THE BEST!!! Simple. Loving it and following it from beginning all the way to number 11 so far. Had this game for almost a year and haven’t played this purely cuz there’s no direction on where to go or what todo.

Ole dude wasn't up at the top of castle morne for me like he was for you. Talked to him where Irina was the same, but he wasnt on the bench. THen went to bridge of sacrifice and it just says "she's dead", homie wasnt there.
Edit: You can fight him as an invader and get the same drops at the Revenger's Shack grace in west Liurnia.

You’ve probably found it already but in the demi humans ruins there was a hidden stairs that gives you the shield of the guilty. Really cool small shield with bleed on it.

Interesting tidbit though if you kill gostoc you won’t get locked in with the knight in the room with the rusty key, he’s the one that locks you in that room with the knight. Something to keep in mind :D
Same thing with the spider
You can carefully enter the room only enough to see the enemy and arrow him then get out. He won't leave the room and after some arrows he will die. And when you enter with the knight dead, you gonna hear the laugh and door close, but nothing will happen.

Killing Gostoc will not lock you out of Nepheli Loux and Kenneth Haight's quest as it can still be completed without him, but you will miss out on the Ancient Dragon Smithing Stone and won't be able to buy it from the Twin Maiden Husks even if you gave them his bell bearing.

Depends, if you can do Stormveil Castle without dying go ahead a spare him, if not killing him really has no consequences, there's enough Ancient Dragon Smithing Stones to get your weapon of choice high enough.
29:50 if you have fire arrows use them to hit the barrels the birds are holding for an instant kill. All 3 of the can be hit before the bird is aggroed

Just wanna point out at 22:30 when Cowboy is looking to buy the parry ash of war, he shouldve went to the Warmaster Shack, not the Stormhill Shack. Its one grace further to the east.

If you have captions on, at 12:23 when he's talking to the father, as he skips through the dialogue the father says "devote my days", and "Irina has a gentle nature". But the captions has it as "thanks to you devote my wiener as I only hope". It actually sounds like he says that, too. Just thought I'd point that out. It got a laugh out of me.

These walkthrough videos are incredible! They’ve really helped get into what was for me when I first started an incredibly intimidating game. I had never played a souls game before and the mechanics were hard for me to understand. Your explanations have really helped me get over my fear and made me really enjoy this game. Kudos to you sir!

More awesome work, FightinCowboy! For those that might not feel great about just dumping on Edgar--you can be invaded by him after you exhaust his dialogue at Irina by traveling to the Revenger's Shack north of the minor Erdtree in Liurnia. If you hang out at the shack, he will invade you. I didn't pick up the goodies as I'm sure we will get there with the walkthrough but there is a grace right outside the shack. It is a pretty straightforward fight.

Just to keep note that the quest seems to be buggy though. Edgar sometimes doesn't invade. Not sure if u defeat Rennala if he doesn't or not. But one of my friends couldn't get him to invade, so he couldn't proceed with that questline. As Edgar isn't available in the world. Best kill him here honestly.
He will only invade at the shack after speaking to him next to Irina's body, and he will only appear there once you've told him that she's dead and she will be dead after you told Edgar that you obtained the sword which you receive from killing the boss in Morne Castle. Lots of going back and forth between those two lol did 2,5 runs so far and quest worked everytime for me.
The Whip is very good for any flying birds, seems to catch them in flight, definitely worth upgrading it for such situations.

I’ve played 12 hours of Elden ring and didn’t realise it was possible to sprint until I saw this video. I also can’t even land an attack on that big Knight without him killing me

For the crucible in Limgrave, you can have him fall down the elevator after you hit the switch to go up if you time it right baiting him towards it.

Good stuff as always, Cowboy. I died going through the castle and revived with a chunk of my souls gone (a decent amount too). I traveled back to the castle gate, messed that dude up and retrieved all souls. Hell no, I worked hard those souls lol.
I felt had for killing him but he was taking to many runes
If you kill Gatekeeper Gostoc early like you did in this video, then you lose out on an important item that he has later in his shop inventory. After you defeat Morgott, Gostoc will then have an Ancient Dragon Smithing Stone for sale in his shop inventory. The stone won’t be available later on from his inventory if you kill him early and give his bell bearing to the Twin Maiden Husks.

I tricked the crucible knight into falling down the elevator shaft. It worked amazingly. No parry's needed, just make sure the elevator isn't there and he'll fall down.

When you warped to stormhill shack for the parry ash of war I believe you meant to go to warmaster shack instead, the dude is still there at this point in the game

at 22: when you fast travel out, you can actually go back down the ladder and proceed straight ahead to a ledge drop that will continue the back door path, it leads to the same areas that you cover in the next episode but it has better continuity IMO

I accidentally killed him that way trying to run away...I was just awarded the item on my way up....lucky cause I can't parry for shit.

if you kill the guy right after you talk to him at the front of the castle he won’t lock you in and you can sneak through the door and keep to the left wall to get behind the knight and get a backstab. 8:20

With the Crucible Knight I went back to the lift and was going to try and go up and deaggro him and make it much easier. I had to pull the lever and wait for the lift. He went to attack me and fell down that hole. So that’s a easier way to get rid of him if you’re looking for that and you still get the Aspects of the Crucible: Horns.

there is definitely a lot of areas like that.
Another tip for crucible knight as a mage/caster. After getting the ash of war, do not cross the small ledge to where he is patrolling. You can stand there and cast and the knight won't cross. He will jump over but just backs up away from you
Pretty much how I beat him. I got up close and unloaded incantations upon him.
That shield was clutch in my fight against both Knights!! For the life of mean, I could not parry with the other shield but with that one, it was "knight" and day! Great walkthroughs. Thanks again!

A tip for anybody watching around 28:58, you can manually aim with L1. It's a lot easier to hit enemies and shoot a bit ahead of where they're going instead of locking onto them, unless they're just charging straight at you. (Sorry if this is a repost, over 1,300 comments but I didn't see this posted)
if ur having trouble fighting the crucible knight get him to follow you onto that elevator. once he is on the elevator run over the button that sends it up but make sure to jump off before it starts moving up. It will take him up and he will eventually fall down and end up dying due to him being focused on you
I got up on the rocky ledge near the entrance to the elevator, shot a couple bolts into him and got on the elevator and did the same thing pushed the button and rolled off ... he fell next to me dead... a much easier way to kill the dude... thanks all for the tips.
He followed me off the lift when I rolled. for a minute it was like a game of chicken around the open elevator shaft...then he walked right into it and died... so it worked out.
for anybody struggling with the crucible knight, the sword of night and flame and flames give me strength is a great combo. neither requires a boss to kill and can be obtained fairly quickly from the graces already unlocked
For everyone that has difficulties with the crucible knight down in stormveil.
You can pull him all the way to the elevator, then push the pressure plate and let him walk down the elevator shaft

I went up as he did his flying attack and he died after kicking my butt ... he was harder than the Crucible Knight because of the environment I thought. Does he respawn?

So I can confirm that in my playthrough up to killing Gatekeeper Gostoc. I entered the castle with 5,738 Runes, I died like 5 times throughout, mostly miss clicking dodge on ledges instead of holding it and killing myself lol. I always got my body back. When I got to the point where we kill him I had 2,334 Runes. I killed him and Now I have 11,235 Runes. I do not think he is worth 9k runes. So I do believe there is something there with him stealing runes and upon death he gives them back.
Love the series I will have Platinum along this playthrough. Thank you for the videos best walkthrough so far and I have checked out at least 4 others who have done platinum walkthroughs. Problem is they all chose MAGIC and it all got massively nerfed and I find that style to boring.

If I have been locked out of the shibriri grape drop by edger is it possible to get more later on? I went to the area and he was there but you didn’t say to kill him then and I though I had to do something at the castle before going back and he would give a weapon. After going back to bridge of sacrifices Grace he wasn’t there and I couldn’t get the weapon or what I’m mostly worried about the grape. I was wondering if you can get more because I know u need 3 for that quest
I didn’t kill Edgar when you did Cowboy, but you still get the Halberd and the Grape when he invades you, so you don’t need to kill him, just to let people know.
Yeah it's an either or, I find it easier to just spank him then.

For the Crucible Knights, use Bloodhound's Finesse move. Cowboy doesn't use it, but it does a lot of damage.
if you time it right, you get invincibility frames so its like youre weaving in and out of the crucible knight's swings
You definitely lose some of your runes every time you die. 20-25% roughly of your drop. Magic users will find the sword birds easier. 2 pebble attacks will down them, and will easily land at longer distances. Same for the guards
I had no problems with the birds using my shield
magic cucks are essentially not playing or beating the game so why even mention them?
Hey. I didn't read trough all the comments to see if it was already mentioned, but it is true that the NPC takes part of your runes when you die. I has 9,8k, got back 6,8k aftee dying again got back 5,4k. And your videos are so helpful 🙌🏽

Should note don’t kill Gostoc you can get 2 ancient somber smithing stones from him at the end of the quest line for nepheli and the dude from castle morne

I know I'm super late but the dash is part of the bloodhound fang's weapon skill. if you press heavy attack (R2) just after using bloodhounds finesse you will follow up with a dash attack, called bloodhounds step.

I had 60k runes and I was only able to retrieve 42k. I killed him and got the 18k back. I did this test on NG+. Kill him immediately, if you wait until the boss before killing him you will not retrieve the lost runes. I lost so much runes on this area on my first playthrough because I didn't know.

Complete honesty here, Crucible knights were extremely scary for me until I watched your videos
For people who see this guide in future, DO NOT kill Gostoc Gatekeeper if you want an extra Ancient Dragon Smithing Stone at end game. ER Wiki says Gostoc ends up selling one at end of Nephelli/Haight quest line. Also, if trouble with the crucible knight, put the elevator up, and go around the elevator shaft/hole to avoid the Crucible knight, eventually, he’ll just walk or run into the elevator hole, easy way to cheese him.

i also wish these were uploaded more often, currently on my 3rd playthrough and i’m just realising that i missed so much, not as much as i thought i had but it’s good to see everything
If u say no that guy and ask him to open the gate, then he will steal some of your runes. You can come back and kill him to get them back. It's honestly a good thing cause he is basically saving them for u.
I took his advice and sneaked in...he still stole my runes. And you only get them back if you kill him BEFORE killing Godrick. After defeating Godrick, he shows up and jumps on his corpse. Kill him then, and you get nothing back.

Before Stormveil, what about defeating the Bell Bearing Hunter at the Warmaster's Shack? Go to the grace site in front of the Warmaster's shack and pass time to nightfall, then stand up, and sit back down at the grace. The Hunter will be in the shack. Same for Church of Vows and a few other places
He mentioned back on the first ep that doing that messes with a certain story line and you aren’t able to get some sick looking armor, he also said that at some point the war shack guy invades you and you ended up killing him anyway.

Cowboy hasn’t mentioned anything about the Bell Bearing Hunters so far from what I remember. Happy to be proven wrong!
@@bobbydeazyBell Bearing Hunters aren’t merchants. The merchants even disappear while the hunter is there so that you don’t accidentally hurt the merchant during the fight with the hunter. The merchants come back safe and sound afterwards
@@bobbydeazy The first Bell Bearing Hunter can be found at the Warmaster’s Shack if you follow the directions in my original comment 😊 Another Bell Bearing Hunter appears at the Church of Vows following the same directions as above. They can be difficult to kill so be careful. I think there’s 2 more after that, but they are further along in the game. As far as I can tell milling the hunters does not affect any quest lines, and are just optional boss fights like the night bosses around the map
The birds are really easy to kill in this section if you have fire arrows. Just shoot the exploding barrels nearest them and they will die instantly.

You were looking for the Warmaster's Shack, not the Stormhill Shack btw. Bernal doesn't leave for Volcano Manor until you fully start the manor questline. You were at the shack where Roderika was.
Also if you hit the explosive barrel that the birds are resting on with a fire arrow, the barrel will blow up and kill the bird instantly, no fighting necessary.

When you die in the castle the gatekeeper takes 10% of your runes everytime or something but if you kill the gatekeeper at any point you get all the runes he has taken from you back so just kill him after the boss of the castle (you cant miss him) to get them back
Edit: Got conflicting info about this, so pls take what I've said with a pinch of salt bc you might actually get all the stolen runes back. Keeping my original comment for context: [You won't get all your runes back if you kill him after Godrick is slain; you'll get a flat 200, irrespective of how many he stole from you]. I also believe he steals 30% of your dropped runes.
@@Lishaaaaaaa I killed Gostoc after Godrick and got around 3k runes. Still, with how much I died in the castle, I expected at least 10k.

@@Lishaaaaaaa dont know where the cut off is but ive got my souls back from him right after killing godrick in the boss room on 2 separate characters didnt know he didnt give you all of them back after that though ty and yea it might be 30% just know he does take them under at least certain conditions thats how i got mine back when it happened to me and as far as i can tell from playing, looking things up, and word of mouth he has no real purpose outside of selling you things (which you get the bell for when killing him) and taking some souls when you die so no reason as of right now to not just kill him at the gate when you meet him the first time the door dont shut you in with the knight you dont lose souls when you die the only thing you miss out on really is a grace mimic from talking to him in the castle itself
If you're melee, always carry arrows. Bow and arrow cheese is real in this place 😅
Been playing limgrave for about 20hours now. Just exploring, ending up in the crystal tunnels and the beastial sanctum. Approaching level 30. Did margit and now im working through the castle. Went to check your videos for anything i might have missed. Note that i ALWAYS play areas as much as possible before checking any videos. I wouldnt find it rewarding to just follow a playthrough, thats just me. Thanks a TON Cowboy, love ya

You didn't talk to him at the castle than or you missed a conversation with her originally.

Just accidentally made the knight fall down the elevator didn’t even need to fight him😅
Love these walk throughs! On the Crucible Knight, I let home chase me to the lift and when I went up, he fell into the hole under the lift and died, I never had to fight him to get his ashes of war. Lol
I was stubborn and spent like 2 hours trying to beat him fair and square. Finally worked out but it was rough.

I believe you missed a talisman from a tower where you made parkour. Once I was helping put a friend since I had already done this part. A guy invaded us but was peaceful and he led us right trough it... It was a little longer than what you did.

Just want to say thanks for all your videos and hard work for the community! Much appreciated! Btw, I was running past the knight to grab the lift and decided to take a swing at him. So then i was running with like maybe 20 hp, and somehow made it to the lift. He lunged at me as I was going up and fell down the hole. Halfway up, I got a reward. Cheesy win, I know but I'll take it. :)
Using the mimics veil to sneak by that big guy in the main room is hilarious

6:56 Also trust, get the fervor cook book 2, collect cracked pots, Trina lily's and mushrooms for sleep pots. Its really gonna help you in a late game area with a certain boss fight.
Thank you cowboy for helping get the courage to parry crucible knights been able to kill them with little difficulty before but now they seem too easy
