Sometimes i think its a small miracle that Ricky Gervais of all people met karl Not just because hes funny beyond belief but also that Ricky is probably the only person in the world who can speak to him in certain ways and get the very best of his Karl moments out of him
True, Karl seems off-putting to most people and they never dig below the surface where he goes from seeming unfriendly & unintelligent to hilarious and genius in a few very specific ways.
No the most perfect moment is when karl was right about the lighthouse light being off during the day and steve coming to his rescue followed by his triumphant scream
deborahmpa1 I'd compare it to transcendental meditation for comedy fans....I'll set an 9 hour Playlist so I know it's still on when I wake up. ;) Seasons 1-3 of XFM I've probably cycled through 50 times each. It's therapeutic. I've even got some Audible Downloads on my phone for on-the-go situations.
"...never saw the man 'ole cover again!" Is the bit that kills me every time. Perfectly sums up Karl's ability to find the most ordinary story inexplicable or supernatural.
This is not a radio show. It is the televised slow breakdown of Ricky Gervais' mind as his unstoppably stubborn inquisitive nature tries to penetrate the mind of Karl Pilkington. He bashes his head against Karl's in a futile attempt to understand and is eventually driven quite literally to the breaking point. If you listened to XFM back in the day, over the course of time you could actually hear the wear and tear on Ricky's mind. He was slowly losing it. He was just getting increasingly more and more aggravated by every single thing Karl said. It was the most pure form of art we will ever see.
I still come back to these clips all these years later, I often used to listen to the podcasts in the gym or on the train and get the dodgiest looks for laughing to myself!
They often mention their failure to win radio awards and critical acclaim with this show, and receive "constructive criticism" from other radio personalities of the time. Nearly 15 years on do those others enjoy the same success and cult following as these three? This particular brand of absolute twaddle doesn't date very much. If it were more factual, satirical or politically relevant it would have been forgotten by now.
You're not alone. I fell in love with the podcasts and radio shows because I felt like I was part of their stupid conversations. As you said it kept the loneliness at bay.
I discovered this whole body of work when I was going through a dull, down, skint, rubbish period in my life - but these three kept me cheered up all the way through it. Now things are great for me, and one of the reasons why is stuff like this compilation. I salute you boys.
I love it when moments like 1:25:55 occur. I love it when Karl says something and Steve just gives out a sort of high pitch squeak meanwhile i can imagine Ricky is just sat next to him looking at karl thinking "What the fuck is this twaddle" hahaha
I know that xfm is done and finished but I actually listen to this so much. I listen to These podcasts at work and even when I'm in bed trying to sleep. Good stuff man, old material never gets old.
Still listen to these 3 everyday! Wish they would sit down together again and make some more about all the technology that’s came out and being designed
I love that Karl's basis on the hairy Chinese kid being weird wasn't that he was absurdly hairy for not only a person but a child, but that he was hairy for a Chinese person. Also the idea that people in China were thinking like Karl and going "boy we're normally not that hairy! How weird is that?"
My favourite thing about the execution stories is that Karl proclaims there to have been the same number of steps as there were blinks in the first story: 32.
Thank god I am listening to this while I'm working from home. I just exploded when I heard the feng shui bit, my office mates would have thought I've gone mental.
Same. I downloaded every single one of their podcasts. XFM, Ricky Gervais Show, specials, guides, etc. I just have it on repeat on itunes. It just makes you feel better.
Also, This is one of few things that can almost ALWAYS lift me mood, if im feling down this will normaly cheer me up, not because of how bloody funny it is, but because Ricky has such a dirty infectious laugh.
"Any dates?"
"I think it was in Belgium"
November 2024 here and still funny. Been listening on and off for over a decade now 😊
I've started to say 'play a record' whenever some one says something stupid.
James Keane hahaha
Oh yeah? Good for you. Play a record.
Absolute twaddle. Play a record.
I’m gonna burst !
Brilliant!

If Ricky wasn't so lazy the entire trio wouldn't exist 😅
True, Karl seems off-putting to most people and they never dig below the surface where he goes from seeming unfriendly & unintelligent to hilarious and genius in a few very specific ways.
1:47:36 when Mad World fades in is possibly the most perfect moment in radio history

I honestly STILL listen to these XFM Podcasts/Podfather Series/RGS while relaxing & trying to fall asleep. Still hilarious.
Me too thought I was the only one :)
Completely thought I was the only human in the world who found these 3 (mostly Karl) to be the best mood enhancing and relaxing humans in the world.

Same here. Finding it hard to find new material but still enjoy cycling through the old stuff.
I do the exact same thing! I'm glad I'm not the only one :)
every night I listen to the podcasts to fall asleep too. sheer brilliance!
+Ross Jarvis same here, I'm addicted to listening to them before I sleep, but sometimes Ricky's laugh wakes me up haha.
+Scott Ellison i do that often as well
I fuxin love these 3
Me too but I will hear a funny moment from karl and be wide awake crying with laughter
They never get old
Come on Steve. Come on Steve, you're making this a mockery.... so the budgie's depressed because he can sense a ghost, yeah?
I've been laughing so hard at that for months now
I love how jealous Ricky and Steve are when they hear that Karl's been hanging out with Simon Pegg and Nick Frost.
"...never saw the man 'ole cover again!" Is the bit that kills me every time. Perfectly sums up Karl's ability to find the most ordinary story inexplicable or supernatural.
0:44:09 the nuclear experiment / manhole cover one is true
@43:47 is one of Ricky's best ever laughs - you can just hear all the air leaving his body.
This is not a radio show. It is the televised slow breakdown of Ricky Gervais' mind as his unstoppably stubborn inquisitive nature tries to penetrate the mind of Karl Pilkington.

misterfox that is genuinely a true story, though the explination might not have been amazing ahah.

Your videos are cures for anxiety, hangover, hangover-anxiety, depression, insomnia and crippling boredom. Thank you dearly
That pork chop story is probably the funniest anecdote I've ever heard. How Ricky didn't collapse into a cackling fool is beyond me.
Went inside her how? Like up her ass or something or just absorbed "inside her" fat ass?!..x
He's mentioned this since then, he meant like, attached to her skin 😂
