Okay. I'm late to the game but I have say this. The production value in this video should be the GOLD STANDARD for any product or process demo. The instruction is direct and without fluff, the examples are well done and easily understood and the pace is great. The talent is well suited for demos and has a good presentation style. As a video veteran I also appreciate the time take to cover (dissolve is fine) the jump cuts. Well shot, well edited and full of good content. Now. Am I a MagMod user? Not yet. I am, however, going to investigate their product line now. Well done!
I'm waiting on my grid to come to me. I have the Bounce and the Sphere and it has transformed my photos bigtime:) very happy with these products to the point I can actually start charging.
Hey Trevor, Thank you for this.. Some examples and details using Magbeam too please.. in different situations, ambiance etc. MagBeam is very tricky with patterns.
At 11:27, I like how you explain how the MAGgrid & MADsnoot are used for. I am definitely am buying them. I also like how you set them up for your photo shoot, and the reason why you set them up that way.
The price of the snoot in the UK is approx $78. That's stupidly expensive for what it is. The fab box that it comes with? Completely unnecessary. Do I like the MagMod system? LOVE it! Just sad that it's so over-priced.
Your not just paying for "a bit of rubber", jeez why do so many people make these sweeping statements... Your paying for the R&D that it took to come up with this, the tooling, the advertising to ensure you can actually find out about it, for somebody to keep a check on quality control to ensure duff products don't go out and the service behind it that will be there if you need them, and ensures they have funds to make more products you will love. There is SO much more to to a fab product than just the cost of the materials, yet so few people understand this, OR, they claim to understand it yet still moan about it (Proving they don't understand it) The price is simply a reflection (See what I did there?) of the work that has gone into it and what it takes to get it to people all over the world, and have money to make more awesome products.
the best video about the mag system ever made....make more and you will sell more products...Trevor, I think if you made more of a step by step video tutorial with camera settings you could sell that easy.... also in 1:28 what light stand was that?
Trevor Dayley dont wait brother if its crossed your mind over 5 times thats the gods telling you hey take this blessing and make some money or its just me being lazing and waiting you to do all the hard work for me lol
Awesome Lindsay. Be sure, if you are on Facebook, to join the MagMod Community there. Lots of tips and photos being shared. Just search #MagMod Community to find the group.
This is a fantastic video, Trevor - thank you! I can't tell you how much it helps to see the set up as well as the "after" shot. If I can ask a ridiculous question, and it's probably off topic and/or enough for a whole other video, but at 5:22 , how do you shoot both speedlights at once? Is that set up through the transceiver?
great video... I have the snoot and the grid and tried to replicate your video ... to no avail... I've been trying to "black-out" the backdrop and I cannot figure out how to achieve the same effect ... would you share what your camera settings were?
The system is expensive but it works. I usually go to group shoots where you have to be on the move. The magsphere and grid makes a world of difference.
Awesome video, thank you! When you're using a grid to control the light, do you also change your light spread in your speedlight? Example - use a 105 spread versus a 24 spread?
Hi Murvlaous, actually HSS is something I probably need to use more of, but I often don't, just because of the strain it puts on the flashes. To get the scene dark I'm usually just lowering my ISO, and raising my aperture until I am underexposed.
Trev, this is an awesome video with chockful of useful info. And that group composite shot at 2:03? Is brilliant! I'm so gonna use that technique haahh :p Thanks for sharing.. :)
Just a question, I'm used to snoots producing a round circular light, the video shows the magsnoot producing a wide rectangular light vs the maggrid. Are there any examples of using the magsnoot vertically, using to light a model from the side?
Unfortunately, I don't remember Vince and I usually don't change that. It has never seemed to make a huge difference for me since the Grid and Snoot are sculpting the light soon as it exits.
@@dayleyhighlights Doesn't have the Zoom function of the flash the same function than the grid, let's say changing from 24mm to 105mm? Have you done a comparison?
Thanks for these videos. Just wondering how far back your light was in the photo at 3:45 mark in video? Was this 1 or 2 grids? Also, for 9:47 how far back was light? Thanks!
Thanks @yomozingo - the light at 3:45 was about 5-6 feet back. You can see a pull back at around 3:29 in the video. It was just one grid. For the MagSnoot at 9:47 it was pretty close. I want to say maybe a foot away from the ring. I don't remember exactly though as it was shot at a wedding about 4 months ago.
Thank you Trevor for this video. I was sticking to my grids but it made me want to try the snoot! At 9:01 is there a front light in addition to the snoot? (A grid + magsphere maybe🙂)
Hi Chuck, it's hard to answer since every photo is different and unfortunately our cameras don't record the flash settings. But often times Trevor has taught that when the sun is still out he usually puts his flashes at around 1/4th to 1/16th. After the sun has set he usually shoots at 1/32 to 1/128th. It depends as well on how far away he places the flash from his clients. But hopefully that gives you an idea of the flash power he likes to use.
Youre awesome man, question... How do you focus on a subject when you darken your image as much as you did on on that first outdoor picture you shared? If the image is too dark the camera won't know what to focus on correct?
Hi MrCuerv010 - thanks so much for the kind comment! Great question. If you underexpose your scene in the camera it can still focus because it's picking up the ambient light to focus. However, I have found myself in situations when the ambient was very low - almost pitch black, and in those situations, it is of course very tough to grab focus. A couple tips that will help: 1) Make sure you are shooting on One Shot (Canon) or Single Servo (Nikon) when it's dark outside. This setting on the camera will trigger your flash to use the red focus assist lights that will shine on your subject and help your camera to focus. 2) Keep a small flash light (pen light) in your bag. You can use these to shine on your subject when it's extra dark to grab focus. The other option is to use a cell phone flash light. At times, if I am very far from my subject, I will have them shine the light on themselves, grab focus (then switch to manual focus on the lens so it doesn't shift / or use back button focus), and then have them put the light away in their pocket. Hope those tips help!
Trevor Dayley awesome, thanks for the reply. Im on the Sony mirrorless system but I'm sure I can figure out your tips on their system. I'll keep the flashlight tip in mind for sure! Thanks again.
Just ordered the basic kit the zoom reflector kit with gobos and the sphere kit! In your video what did you say the spray was that you use to create a bit of atmosphere? Cheers
I've been trying to get a similar effect to the shot at 4:23 with the CTO and lavender gels, but despite using the grids, I'm still getting a washed out photo or not enough color (depending on power settings on flash and how directly they are aimed at the lenses, and zoom settings on the flashes). The final image in the video looks great with the distinct beams of colored light and soft glow around. It looks like the orange is aimed downward and lavender is aimed upward - despite the video of the shoot showing the flashes aimed level at the camera. Also tried shooting indoors and outdoors, both in the shade/diffused natural light. Any advice?
Hi Chris, it's just a game of inches, actually probably more like centimeters. If I were to go back and pull screenshots of the different shots I'd have some washed out and I would move my body just slightly one way or another and keep shooting to get that flash just right on the edges. Also a lens hood on your lens will help as well to keep the light from washing across the entire lens. I will see if we can recreate this in a future video and get into more detail about zoom settings, etc.
Hi Narjis1 - Trevor prefers to use the R2 Pro Transmitter from Godox with his Godox/Flashpoint flash system. On occasion, he will use one flash on camera as a master to trigger another flash as well.
Just got 2 sets of the grids. It’s great in many ways but the only draw back for me is I have the A1 and 10 lights. Once you have the grip on those lights… it’s a bitch to move the zoom when I need to.
The problem particularly with the MagSnoot is most of this can simply be replicated in Photoshop, which is arguably easier if you're good with Photoshop.
Finally a video that actually shows photo examples as the product is being explained. Thank you.

Such a good video I went down to Georges Camera San Diego and bought a full set. Shot an event Friday and Saturday, I'm all in.

Great video. My grid and snoot arrived here in Brazil. Amazing guys.
Trevor your doing a great job with these tutorials on Magmod . :)
THE T-SHIRT 👕! Take THAT, Gary!
just bought a cheap grid for 3€. ill reconsider my choice and get a magsphere because your content is so great. that just deserves a reward
So glad you like our videos! Enjoy your MagSphere :)
Thanks, Trevor, this is very helpful. I don't have the snoot yet, but it's definitely on my list after having seen your video.

Yeah but pros buy it because the system saves time. Efficiency is everything on a wedding shoot ect
Photography is a cheap business to start, expensive hobby to have
Price is geared to pros, not hobbyist

*Great video! Correct me if I'm wrong, but aren't you capable of doing this with the zoom feature on speedlights as well without needing the grid?*
Question what do you set the Zoom of the flash to? How does the grid effect the zoom setting?
Sir, My flash light does have a zoom option, So if I am using this Grid, What zoom should i adjust the Flash at.. Thanks
Wonderful video ! thanks for teaching us ! Bravo !
Thanks Romulo

Super dooper helpful! Love all that you guys do for us.

Would I be wrong in assuming you're using a flash with HSS on these pics? Just you're able to get such bright areas to look so dark in the pics
Hi Murvlaous, actually HSS is something I probably need to use more of, but I often don't, just because of the strain it puts on the flashes. To get the scene dark I'm usually just lowering my ISO, and raising my aperture until I am underexposed.
But the iso and aperture also decrease the flash power. You should raise the shutter speed for ambient light decrease.
Brilliant video! Answered all my questions! Thanks!
Hey Trevor it would be awesome if you do a photo walk at WPPI, aside from your yearly presentation . I would so sign up for that.
What clamps are you using to attach the flashes to the light stands? They look neat, compact and sturdy
