during an interview, Clapton was asked the difference between beginner, novice and pro guitarists, and his answer was exactly this video... his answer was that a novice may know 3-5 licks in any given position that they can use to get in and out in any situation.. a novice may know 50-100 but a pro will know thousands and thousands. This is why Clapton/Vaughan/Hendrix, and on an on can solo forever without repeating and being endlessly creative.. this will help you build your lick vocabulary by leaps and bounds
This was something that I was able to do pretty easily, when I was first learning to play leads.
I don’t know why, but it just seemed like it came naturally.
This was before I even knew that I was purposely playing leads with key changes.
I’ve shown this to players, who are one to twenty years in.
I think this technique is more important than even learning scale after scale, especially ones that the player can’t apply to a song yet.
Learning what you’re doing in this video, will have a beginner at soloing, doing more, than just learning scales. I also tell people to play covers at first, just to feel how these players did it, and learn why the solo works, while learning it note for note. Then, write one’s own solo, for the piece, first using the licks of the writer, then one that uses none of the techniques or style of the writer.

I'm not very skilled at these things but I have always been fascinated by the way a guitarist like Gilmour builds his solos and melodies to form cohesive statements by phrasing on different areas of the neck. I've noticed that David uses expressive slides in his playing a lot, and he scoots his way up and down the fretboard even when he clearly doesn't have to. I guess if I was more observant I would be able to see a pattern to his sequences and try to internalize it, but it's clear that he was doing things like this intuitively from very early on, and that's the sticking point for me.
With some of us it’s intuitive and others of us have to work hard at remembering patterns and repetition to get the “muscle memory “ down.
Scale 1 : The Minor Pentatonic scales Scale 2 : The Blues Scales Scale 3 : The Natural Minor scales or Aelion modes .
