    One of the most basic beginner training tactics is to teach Target or "Touch" training with a wooden chopstick and a clicker, and rewarding with a click and a treat when the bird gently taps the end of the stick. By teaching your bird this earlier on it can be easier to train because the bird will associate the stick and clicker with getting a treat and may be motivated to co-operate. Don't ever try to force your bird to do something as this will break trust and learn to read body language. Your bird goes to bite your finger when it gets too close? Back away and try again later. This will show the bird you RESPECT it's warnings and it will slowly learn on it's own that the finger won't hurt it. Work at the birds pace, no matter how slow it is, and your bond will be just that much stronger.

    • @esterakovnatska3944
      @esterakovnatska3944 Рік тому

      @@theoneandonly9846 clicker training is when you use a clicker(little thing with a button that makes a fast, clicking noise) to train your bird. Clicker represents a treat coming. You can find some great videos on how to do it on UA-cam. Just search up "clicker training for birds".
      Hope it helped❤❤❤

    Never use the cage as punishment. Its their safe space to go to for calm down time, sleeping, eating. If your bird is misbehaving do not give into that behavior at all, blowing on them will only ruin your progress as well as never raise you voice, always talk to your bird with a soft calm tone. When they bite you or misbehave, simply give them a stern but still calm "No". These things take time and patience. If your bird keeps biting then reflect on your actions and behavior, what did you do that made your bird feel the need to bite? Your bird could just be tired and simply wants you to stop touching them. Training goes both ways, if your not getting anywhere then take a break and try again another day

    Been trying for 5 months, and my female is still terrified of my finger. You make it sound so easy. Try it with my bird, if she steps on your finger, I'll give you 500 "quid" as you're fond of saying.
    Edit: I've also read that birds cannot understand negative reinforcement, and to never blow on them at all. Christ, even I knew that.

    • @genepozniak
      @genepozniak 4 роки тому +19

      I'm speaking from years of pet training experience and readings on the subject. With animals of any kind, there is no "understanding" of what they're supposed to do with reinforcement. You're just getting them to automatically and unthinkingly "associate" a behavior with reinforcement, whether positive or negative. Generally, you're only supposed to use mild punishment to stop potentially harmful (to human or the animal) behaviors like biting. But if someone tells you to "never" do a certain action to a pet (like shoulder "domination" lol), they really need to say specifically WHY it's a bad thing (and it should make sense to you); otherwise you might collect a bunch of rules that actually wind up confusing your pet and stressing it out, which is bad for their physical health. Blowing on a bird is just mildly annoying to them, but on the off chance they could pick up a human disease, you certainly shouldn't blow on them when you're sick.

      Try out different snacks. You will find one they do everything for. Get them to feed near your hand. then from the hand. Take your arm. Lay your hand flat on the cage. try to lock them on the hand. Reward them every time they did it right. With my Cockatiels was the only possible way to get them. They will lightly bit you when thier stepping up. Thats normal. A Cockatiel tests if your arm is sutible. Dont blow on them. They will likely chatch a Disease.

      @@analphabet1996 mine loves taco shells, but I only give her a few bites because of the salt. She goes nuts for plain rice cakes, might try to only give her some if she steps up. Weird, because I have her stick trained perfectly, she jumps right onto my arm, and her favorite place is my shoulder, but hands just freak her out. She can't make the connection that hands=also me. And I drop the nutri-berries less than 2 inches from her head into her tray with my fingers. Birdbrain.

      Even though that is true, some birds never understand the signal.
      I would recommend introducing the bird to step up by giving it a choice (put a treat behind your finger so that the bird has to step up to reach the treat) while saying the command (ie: stepup, upup, etc). Then, after the bird is comfortable stepping up by choice with the treat being in sight, remove the treat from your hand and place it in your off-hand. Then, say the command (ie: stepup, upup, etc) that you have been using. If the bird steps up, reward it with the treat from your off-hand. If the bird does not step up, then show the treat and practice a bunch of times, then, place the treat in your off-hand once again. Try the command again and if the bird does not step up, repeat the process over and over until the bird steps up.
      If you are sure that your bird does not understand the command, then lightly punch the bird’s chest while saying the command. Did I mention LIGHTLY. Gradually increase the pressure over time (don’t apply too much pressure) until your bird steps up. Then reward it form your off-hand.
      If your bird does not step up even under pressure (no pun intended), it is not ready. Repeat the first step over and over again.

    • @reeyasworld2867
      @reeyasworld2867 2 роки тому +3

      Well it's not a bad idea anymore because when you use a command and make your bird sit on your hand after that give it treats so it would understand that it will get treats if it do it

      try to work with them with no cage in the same room, dont fill their full boxes of food thru all day and night, give them breakfast and remove the food boxes, then train them one-two hours after that, then feed them after few hours, or during training with small rewards

    Hate the fact that most of this is negative reinforcement
    You should never keep your bird in its cage when it bites, blow on it or move your hand up an down while the 'tiel is perching
    The right thing you should do is just leave it in a solitary place while it calms down but NOT THE CAGE
    Like a play gym or what it has
    For example I bought a table perch for my tiel and that would be fine... Right?

    My bird is a very stubborn one and a lil clumsy but he is also very kind and likes to talk a lot he likes to think he can scare me but nipping gently on my fingers but I just give him pets to know hey they don't scare me if he was trying to hurt me I would know I still got marks from the first day I got him which is roughly around 2 weeks ago which was my fault but he's such a gentle and talkative baby it hard to know how to get them used to being held or being around a larger figure he likes to fly round my room and some days he doesnt want to come out and just kinda sits in his food bowl which is on the open door it feels like I've had him all my life is weird to think is been so little I've had him
