- In this video I show you how reliable this BMW has been for me with over 120K miles on it! This is a 1 year ownership review of the car, I put close to 20K hard miles on the car of the last year and it has seriously surprised me.
It's a workhorse that never lets me down!
If you're wondering how BMWs from the last 6 years or so are holding up this video will help answer that question. If you've been reluctant to try buying one new or used this video might help instill some confidence.
This video is a follow up to another video I made more than a year ago regarding this subject, you can find that here:
• Here Is Why New BMWs A...
This goes into more details regarding the evolution in terms of reliability.
If this is the first video you're catching of mine please consider subscribing. I upload regularly.

I’m glad to hear your comments. I had a 2009 135 convertible with a N54. I found your channel and followed several of your DIYs. I respect your initiative to tackle the issues yourself (turbo replacement!!) and appreciate your documentation for people like me.
I sold that car 4 months ago. I told the buyer about your channel. I bought a 2018 440 Gran Coupe with Track Handling package. I really like this car. I’m ecstatic you have a B58 as well. I look forward to maintaining my car alongside you and yours.
Thanks ever so much for your guidance and insight.
Nice, congrats. Yeah the B58 is a great replacement for N54 owners. The torque almost hits as hard down low and the sound is great.
Recently switched from a 2013 335is to a 2018 340i xdrive and couldn't be happier. The B58 is really a gem of a motor.
Yeah for me it's the sound and how smooth it runs.
facts!! potential is unmatched
That 335is is rare… both great cars
switched from X3M35i ( N55 ) to a X4M40i (B58 2 chains ) it's incredible ! my X3 supposed to have 305HP and the X4 370 ... but for sure NOT ! something has changed .. maybe the torque at low RPM . I dont know but I feel the car is more than 400hp.
bought a 45.000 KM it's 56.000 no problems for now , very good engine .
How could you bro..
I got my B58 and it was stock for only a week. I got it tuned and FBO
right away with some E85. It has been reliable since the day I got it.
I upgraded the turbo shortly after and it’s been on that set up for a few years and it’s still solid today.
I’ve taken it to multiple 1/2 mile events, Mexico trips and have done endless pulls on it. All I had to get done was the injectors and spark plugs recently.
It’s crazy when my friends with JDM cars or American cars can’t seem to keep their cars running for long after they do some mods. Meanwhile my BMW hasn’t let me down and I hope I can enjoy it for a while still.
Where do I get upgraded turbos ?
All good still?
@@boofpapi yes, still solid
I had a n54, hybrid turbos, FBO etc running about 500bhp. I saw your videos and you inspired me to get into a F36 440i Gen 1. Like you, it's been very reliable and it just feels like a big step up in terms of luxury and tech from a E92. I really want to see you make more videos in this car, and I actually thought you sold it, but so pleased to see it still here. Please make more videos about with it and I hope there a further future plans
Love that you made this! I bought a 440 GC back in January and besides getting used to a “large” car, it’s been pretty good. Plan is to keep her for a while
It's great to see videos like this! Had a lightly driven 2009 Saturn Sky Redline for 13 years that started have "issues" at only 60,000 km. Wanted to get into a newer roadster and was looking into it for a year or so. Actually, I originally thought about the Jag F Type V8 but came across various issues with them so decided on a 2022 BMW Z4 M40i and couldn't be happier. I heard there were very few issues with the B58 and thought Toyota wouldn't have gone with it in the new Supra unless they had faith in it. Nevertheless, it's still nice to see videos like this that confirm it. Thanks!
I’ve been watching your videos for a really long time and I happened to notice the streets you were driving by glad to see your local ! Welcome to San Diego
Thanks for the vid. And thanks everyone for sharing your stories/experiences
Thanks for sharing Musa. My next car ever has to be a B58 for sure! I did a lot of research on this motor and everything seems okay. I think the most significant problems on the N54 are the injectors which were terrible until the index 12 ones, the first gen HPFP's and the crappy Mitsubishi turbos. Oil leaks are expected on BMWs, hahaha. Have a great weekend, Dutch regards, Nico.
Agreed, my current daily is a 2017 440i xDrive Gran Coupe, love everything on it, not a single issue.
How’s your car going now? What’s the update. And how many km’s do you do roughly a year
Amazing video! thank you!
amazing video keep them coming
interesting video..please continue to keep us posted with more update vids
thanks for sharing info!
glad to hear this, im gonna be buying a 440i gc soon ish hopefully
Gave my son my 2007 335i e93 for a 2018 m240. The car is bullet proof and drives like a dream. With the e93 At 112k miles, now I find myself wrenching my sons car, your videos leading the way. The vanos and timing chain in the back of the m240 does scare me a little.
Yeah I had 2010 335i, once the turbos blew I knew it was time to go B58. I've had my 2018 340i xdrive for almost a year now and I love it! Only pcv failure. That's it. 20 bucks later she was back to normal. Love my Bethany (her name).
As always coming with the 🔥
I always swore I never would get a BMW because of reliability despite lusting over them for 20 years (e46 M3 was new when I started driving). Well, a 2018 RWD 340i MPPSK has been my daily for just under a year now. Moved into it from the B8.5 S4, because I always go for highly mod-able yet reliable cars. Researched it and found out the times had changed and so I updated my outlook. Couldn’t be happier with my decision. I love my car, and just an engine tune/trans flash made it rip so hard. Down pipe and HPFP upgrade are sitting in my garage for spring. Occasional ethanol mix and I don’t think I need more from it. That’s already enough to put the car into the mid 500s at the crank. Thanks for sharing your findings. It was content like this that helped me find my perfect daily and update my outlook enough to go for it.
Thanks! Just what I needed!
@michealwinter realy?
My 2016 340xi has 90k. Still running strong. Replaced the upper control arms last week. That's all I've done. Going to replace shocks and do different lowering springs. Almost sold it, but I'm going to keep it until it falls apart.
Good news for me. I own a 2018 440i with under 30k on it. The car is awesome. Thanks
Toyota took BMW to a room & scolded them for trying to do things that doesn’t need to be done (electronic water pump etc). & told them to make cars that will work beyond 40,000 miles.
On another note, that B58 I6 sounds like a Honda J-series V6 when screaming… which is fantastic!
That's funny you mentioned that. Before I got this X3 M40i with the B58 engine, I had an Accord V6 that had that J-series .. Both sound super nice. Idk I kinda preferred the Accord V6 with the short ram air intake (Vtec sounds were nice!)
@@b.f.378 indeed!
I have an 18 as my daily. My 23 should be here next month. Can't wait.
side note - this is probably my fav channel on youtube.
This is really nice, feels like BMW is going back to its roots :P
On a side note - Into is pure gold, ultra shot, on point and not annoying.
Engine and trans are better than ever. Problem is steering feel on every BMW after 2011 is garbage
@@papa_pt Not just steering, but their stupid downgrade of going the Tesla route for climate control and volume (Gotta use touchscreen now to change the A/C, so dumb...). But yeah, the engines and trannies are actually really good for the current generation.
you have convinced me to buy one. Soon I'll be on the market.
The cool 'sound' when in sport mode is piped through the speakers. 😉 I have a 340i xDrive (2015) but the shaft seals ("Simmerring" in German) at the rear differential are slowly leaking and already need to be replaced with 94k km (58k miles) and mostly moderate driving (apart from the occasional >200 km/h blast on the German Autobahn), the long time average consumption is 8,6 litres per 100km.
Great video! I've always been a Japanese car guy, and have stayed away from BMW due to the unreliability reputation but I finally purchased a 18' 340I Xdrive with ~50K miles due to this motor. Absolutely great motor and it's great to see this thing still solid as a rock for you at your mileage.
I love JDM too, I got brz but think I'm gonna trade it in for the 440i after watxhin this
how's it treating u after 10 months
@@yearight6294 no complaints but it's been sold now lol
@@BISCAYNEWAYS dang how come? and how long did u have it ?
@@yearight6294 the used car market demanding about 6-7K more than what I paid for it almost 1.5 years and 25,000KM being put on the dash made it make sense. Sold and now drive a G37 coupe 6MT but I will be back to a 40i 6MT in the future
Great idea for content!
I have a 2019 440i M Sport. So far, the B58 is simply great!
77,000 miles. Zero issues. Had it 5 years now and still get excited to drive it. It's a great performer and it's a pretty good looking car too.
UPGRADES:
Bootmod BM3 Stage 2 (91 octane)
Dorch HPFP
VRSF downpipe
BMS filter
KW Stage 3 Coilover Suspension
Lowered 1.5"
Niche Wheels
Rear Diffuser
Lower Rocker Panels
Michelin Pilot Sport 4S Tires
I considered Stage 3, big turbo, cold air intake, etc. to get to 550+ HP but really didn't want to go E85 only b/c I drive a lot and E85 is not available at every gas station here in Cali. The car is plenty quick and I honestly can 't image needing much more power. I already run out of road too soon at just 420 HP. :)
I have a 2018 340i xDrive M Sport that I purchased in 2019 with 3,100 miles. It now has around 21,000 (I'm retired hence the low mileage). Anyway, a VANOS solenoid was replaced at 10,000 miles under warranty and I dumped the run flats at 13,000 miles. Otherwise, this car has been great, we averaged 36 mpg (100% highway miles for this tank) on a trip to Canada and I get 21 around town. I really like this car.
My wife has a 2017 M240i. We have had it almost 3 years. so far so good.
While I do hear that the B58 is reliable mostly, I’m really interested in the reported injector failures, cylinder scoring (namely cylinder 6) & coolant leaks. I bought the same car as you last year with 7k miles on it but I’m hesitant to tune it because of the posts I’ve seen on Bimmerpost plus all the high profile UA-cam B58s blowing up recently. Some posts I’ve saw were cars that were stage 1 only too. Really hope you can chime in.
Keep them stock you won’t have any issues
@@aidanquinn5498planning to get one, not tuning. I’m guessing a lot of these problems occur on the engine due to tunes and beating on the engine. Have some friends say it’s good without any oil leaks.
I got a 2013 BMW with 120,000 miles and it has been very reliable too !
I can attest to the better builds. I have a 2015 f82 m4 with s55 engine. I had a bad fuel pump at 40k replaced under warranty. Now 80k miles, I’ve had zero maintenance issues. And it gets 23mpg city and 28-29 on highway. Not getting rid of this jewel.
Yo I love your content bro I heard on your vid that the transmission can hold 150whp more on top of stock? I’m tryna get a 2019 440 xdrive and I know I’m gonna be putting money for power. Do you know how much the xdrive transmission can hold?(whp) hope you see this comment 💪🏽
Hi I’m a new subscriber to your channel. I had a 2015 435i gran coupe that was totaled in December 2023. I loved that car. Never had any major issues with it for the 2 years I had it. Now I just bought a 2017 440i coupe rwd. It has the M package on it. This car feels a lot more aggressive than the 435. That being said, I’d like to be in the 450 - 500 hp range but have it reliable for a daily driver. Ive heard of bootmod3 and some other things. What would you suggest I do. I put a few things on my 435 like a charge pipe, cold air intake, valve Tronic exhaust. I wasn’t real happy with the valvetrinic. So I’d like to make it sound nice but not super loud with all the burbles. I really don’t like when I hear exhausts like that. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated
My Z4 (M40i) has the B58 in - it is phenomenal! I do have the oil changed every 5000 miles whereas BMW recommends 12000 mile intervals 😳
Such a great car bro. Wanted to ask, i have a 2018 740i with the B58 engine (6 cylinders) now at 82,000 miles. What should i change on it to keep it running throw 100k without having to see any issues?
I've had a 2009 335xi coupe 6mt N54 for 6 years now. I plan on getting another BMW (Newer one) and was contemplating which choice I should make. Im on the fence between the 2023 M240i xdrive VS the 2023 M2 (Hopefully comes in xdrive) Which would be better for a long term car? Any suggestions on the 2 choices would be great.
Hi brother!
Just subscribed, very good videos.
Question, is the 2019 330i with the 4 cylinder as reliable as the V6? I think that is the same engine as my Mini Cooper and it has been great but I would like to confirm. :)
Thanks brother
Inline 6*
hey I got my n55 e92 4 1/2 years ago @ 116k miles with these past 2 years running mhd stage 2+ and it just broke 150k not long ago… it’s been pretty reliable *frantically knocks on wood*😂 really only been maintenance and plastic parts failing… BUT my center support bearing did just go so that’s next on the list :)
One quick question. What oil do you put ? What viscosity ? 0-20,30 ?
Is it normal for the exhaust to have lots of condesation? My B58 gen1 seems to have a bit.
I have a 2019 F36 440iX (even in the same color as yours Carbon BLK) and am now at 25k miles. Only issue thus far was a blown turbo which was under warranty and Driver Seat Motor. The car does burn more oil and usually have to top off every 2-3 weeks but I absolutely love this car as my daily driver. Upgraded the intake and installed a Catless DP, JB4 with BEF and have been very satisfied. Still have some more ideas in mind but am definitely satisfied with the B58 gen1 and the quality of the car.
The dp didn’t void the warranty?
@@nicholasnegron5745 I installed right after warranty ended. Warranty is 50k miles or 3 years and it’s been 3 years…
I found that the B58 and the ZF transmission have been quite reliable so far. It's the other stuff I worry about with my 540i. So far have had to change out one axle and both front bearings and getting ready to change out the rear.
Oil consumption is my concern with the B58. Not reported yet on S58
Having problem with my thermostat
And water pump on my n55 f10
Has that really improved in the B58?
What is the average mpg? Im getting mid 20's on my 428i n20 engine with sensible driving and the occasinal foot down.
still have the 2009 E90 N54 335Xi. no leaks at 190k km just changed the water pump as it failed. also have the 2020 G20 M340i. both great cars. the new one is fun and sounds awesome, fully loaded, lots of gadgets. but i like both cars. kinda miss the hydraulic steering of the E90.
Hmmm seems like a good replacement candidate for my e46. My m54 is at 240k miles lol
Not sure how much longer it will go before head gasket is needed… I drive it hard and it’s still fun
Any idea about the s58 engine? Is it as reliable you think?
Hey, can you buy a used E82 (M or non M) and see what's wrong with it? That would be great, I don't think I've ever seen 1 series on your channel XD!
BMW is practically perfect now!
Original plugs? Isn't there a maintenance schedule for the plugs?
Actually sold my m340 to get back in a gen 1 . Just love the f30 chassis. Thanks for the content
Really? I’ve been conflicted with either a 2018 f30 or 2020 g20. I love the f30 chassis as well but g20 tech is nice for sure
@@AerohTV just personal preference. Yes the g20 is updated but i love the f30 chassis
I have a 2006 e90 with 260k miles still running
Any ideas what a code P0446 would be? I'm pulling that code and it says vent control circuit....I replaced the gas cap and fuel breaker valve that's located right on top of the engine. Thanks
I think I missed the video on the BOV install.
Yeah, that's good content I love my N54's but if I can push 400hp out of a B58 without issues maybe someday.
Thank you man for getting this car. I also bought a high mileage 2016 340i and had to replace the oil filter housing because it's plastic and it cracked other than that it's a beast
How many miles
How is it still holding up?
This makes me want to part ways with my problem child- 2008 335xi e92. Love the car, but the little issues are annoying. Not to mention, the 440 GC would be better with my kiddos.
Yeah the rear hatch is great for loading stuff.
@@VehicularDIY I don’t suppose you’ve owned or driven a 540i with the b58? Those seem to be easier to find. However, if the difference between that and a 440i Gran Coupe is similar to the e92 vs e60 535… I’ll probably just be patient. E60 was too “boat like” and I even thought little things like throttle response and exhaust note were dead comparatively.
Hi, Can you do a reliability video on N55 engines, specifically the N55 in the M2
I recently fixed an F10 and covered a lot of the known issues in that video. It is a few videos back talking about that to do at 100K miles.
considering a 2019 X3 M40 with 60K miles CPO... I have a 2011 335 and its breaking my pockets... Are these more reliable you'd say?
Great video!
Talking about reliability, me coming from an Acura J37 and considering the F30 B58, I was wondering if you'd noticed any oil consumption between oil changes? And what kind of oil are you using?
Did you get a BMW? I have the TL with the J37 right now and it consumes oil too🤧, thinking about getting this or a q50
@BenJS2 After all, I went for the W212 E550 with 5.5 atmospheric engine. No issues so far, 0 oil consumption per 7000 miles. And the roar of the V8 is a real joy.
@@martinrkrs nice
The EWG N55 cars are pretty damn reliable as well. Just got a f15 sDrive 35i x5 for the wife. Ridiculously nice well rounded package and it's got over 100k on it
They are decent, just suffer from oil leaks, misfires, injectors, water pumps etc.
@@VehicularDIY yeah. Coming from owned an auto n54 that needed literally everything and then another manual n54 I made a drift daily car. Was pleasantly surprised the x5 made a 7 hour drive home, driving hard here and there, no problem. Ready for any problem when it shows itself but feels extremely solid for the year and miles
@@VehicularDIY B58's just suffer from catastrophic engine failures, scored cylinder walls, coolant loss etc
Awesome!
Good video
Any comments on reliability of a 2020 840i and that iteration of the B58?
Good to hear for sure. Bought a Toyota Supra 23 mt.
Did u ever run into a low coolant issue? 47k miles my first warning popped up and I just topped it off.
did you service the gear box (oil changed) at any mileage ?
The f generation of gran coupes are truly one of my favorite looking modern looking Bmw cars . They do dam sexy looking .
hey would you say a 2014 N55 with EWG are pretty reliable?
What mpg does your 328i xdrive get city?
What do you think about a M340i with 48k miles. You think it’ll last
That sounds just like my X3M. I am hoping the S58 has this same reliability. I did have a spark plug crack. Mine does not even remotely get good gas mileage though. I get 18. :/
i have never been more happier with a bmw in the 4 years ive been driving ive had 2 m54,(530,325),N52(328i), m62 4.4 x5, but holy fuck ive had my b58 540i for 20k miles and its been the absolute best a car can be in every aspect MPG, maintenance cost, fun, RELIABILITY, just being a fucking bmw and the absolute savage that it is
Just bought a used m240i and the a/c is toast on it (46k miles). Going to cost $3,000, thankfully the dealership is covering the costs since they missed it on their inspection. Engine wise seems to be in perfect condition despite first owner averaging 21mpg. Must've been bagging the piss out of it.. but so have I :)
After watching your video would you recommend anyone to extend their warranty? If the B58 is so reliable why do it.
Thicwhips experienced a spun rod on a B58. Are there still some gremlins somewhere ?
Which year is it ..was thinking of getting a f30 2018 340i its got 98 000km on the clock
Hi did you sell the white car you’re working on?
make me wanna b58 nowlol. Hope all is well bro.
Would it be possible to put the b58 on an e91?
At that mileage won't the intake ports will be coked up?
I am at 105k in my b58, it is a 16 340xi 6mt and I love it. Currently have a check engine light for the catalytic converter but that may be my fault lmao
The B58 is modular family, same block for diesel and gasoline motors, so it is a very strong block. No oil leaks is a very good new nearly unbelievable in a BMW 6 cilinder engine now a days, so congratulations for the reenginiered reliability.
Which is the service for the intake cooling water circuit ?
BimmerN53
I'll look that up, would be good to tackle that for maintenance. I'll go ahead and do some maintenance on this car now, including the diffs and trans fluid etc.
@@VehicularDIY I have a 2018 440i xDrive Gran Coupe, as far as I can tell the same as yours. Same color even. I'm very glad I found your channel, since the B58 is relatively new it's kind of hard to find videos on upgrades and preventative maintenance. I only really started getting into cars the past couple years, having no prior knowledge not even how to do an oil change. That's the first thing I learned. Since then, I've been trying to DIY what I can, if not just to learn.
I've read that I should change the trans fluid, but not drain all of it, rather just about half and then refill. Is this true? Either way, I'd love to see a video of yours on that service. I'm only at 58k miles, so I won't be doing that for probably another 40k miles. Next item for me is changing spark plugs and ignition coils. Thanks for the B58 content.
Hi sir, what year of x5 have this engine?
I've had my 540 for a year and the collant leaked twice, 24.5 mpg driving carefully
It's a direct injection engine, how come I never hear anyone talking about walnut blasting?
Any updates one year later?
I’ve had an F31 for 3 years now. Previous car was a 135i w/N55. Before that was an E91 M sport. F31 reliability is better but the steering sux in comparison.
Thank god. Got tired of always worrying about my timing chains. The fear finally led me to selling off my cars.
I sure hope my S58 is a reliable one. I’m coming from an n54 and it really wasn’t that bad if you did your PM.
Hopefully, I had a G80 with the S58 and it was problem free but definitely not in the same territory with regards to fuel economy and efficiency but it's not built for that. It was an animal at speed.
Why did you sell
Great video ! I would love to upgrade to a B58 engine. What year did they start using that motor for BMW?
2016
Can you walk through the gran coupe and all the things to look for? I’m in the market for a 440 GC and there aren’t many videos on them.
I can look into doing that, not sure the list would be very long but I can do some research. Is there a particular thing you are worried about?
@@VehicularDIY mainly the differences between the F30 and the F36 from your experience. Chassis feel, suspension nuances if any, and reliability/quality concerns with the gran coupe style. I see a lot of posts claiming decent gas mileage and still don't know how they do it. I can barely break 20 mpg's on a 435i.
What year 440i is that? Never says lol...
If B58 gen1 (w/ 2 timing chain and intermediate shaft) is good, the B58 gen2 (1 timing chain and no intermediate shaft) is perfect!!
