I don't think I'd ever doubt a vanillaware game. They just don't miss
They dont miss but they never got this level of success, im glad theyre getting the attention
Nothing is infallible.
@@SuperDomochan imagine if they released this on PC.
I'm glad I listen and got aegis rim I and now I'm loving this
@@FurieasBy far the biggest downside of the game for me.
When the demo came out I gave it a try & ended up playing for 5 hours straight & it sold me completely. I’m completely in love with this game, absolutely worth it!
Atlus is a constant force to be reckoned with.
This might be one of the most "worth it" Switch games to come out in its lifespan. I went from not know what it was to getting the Monarch Edition on pre-order after playing that demo.
SAME! I'm playing the hell out of it right now. I'm only on the phone at the moment because I needed to stand up and eat some food lol. 😂
Is it anything like Triangle Strategy? Loved that game. I must try the demo.
@@wheatgrinder83 no. I mean there are probably some similarities, but the gameplay is considerably different. I highly recommend playing the demo if you have the ability to do so.
@@Xoulrath_ cool, I downloaded it. It looks great either way, so I’m interested in trying. Thanks.
100% worth it.
I was surprised how good it is because i just heard of the game about a week ago. 9.5 - 10 game imo. It reminds me of tactics ogre.
@zackfair6791 I'd heard of it in passing a few months ago, mostly due to my keeping up with Atlus' projects. Still, definitely one of those games that would easily fly under the radar...
for anyone having a hard time w the gambit system - go to the practice guys at a fort - allow your team to fight them and watch for your team mistakes (he didn't heal when needed etc) one by one. then go into the settings and program what you want them to do and under what circumstance (condition) do you want them to do it - low health, when a flying enemy is there etc
@@matthew81p What if I hate programing, I couldnt stand doing logic programming at uni so dumped comp sci entirely
@@TheRoleplayer40k in the beginning stages you can get by w out programming but later you will get trashed. try out the demo for a lil while you might like it
I was not even hyped for this game, now it's my Goty, it's early but still. Do not sleep on this gem.
Goty easy
Without a doubt
@@timebandit1266dragons dogma comes out this month relax
Yep, same here. The best kind of hype is the organic enjoyment that you discover on your own. Having one of the best demos of a game also helped greatly
Remember man, the most important GOTY is YOUR personal Goty, whatever the usual triple A Goty title usually is. We can appreciate industry breaking influential triple A titles of that year but you should also remember what made you love video games in the first place, and sometimes it ain't that mainstream console selling triple A title.
Got the monarch edition, and I have no regrets 😊
Same here and I’ve stopped getting collector’s editions many years ago.
Drove 28 highway miles one way immediately after work yesterday to buy it from best buy (game stop didn't have it in stock). Unlike octopath traveler 2, the demo save carried over. Loving it! ❤🎮⚔️🏹🦄
Is it as good as Octopath?
@@davidhamid8025 Better.
So what's better Octopath 2 or this?
Don't forget to check all mountains/hills. They play the camera angle of the map and hide paths in places you can't see. If you see an item on the map you can't reach, that's probably it.
Also the devs apparently said you can recruit all characters in one playthrough, so don't worry too much about it if you want to see them all
Found this at Walmart, thank God. About 2 hours in and it’s outstanding. The animations are so crisp.
"everything about this game is perfect and enthralling. i think about it in my sleep. it stands with and above genre staples.
9/10"
I'm suffering from sleep deprivation as well thanks to this game.
lol
"A tinkerer's paradise..." is absolutely correct. And it's incredible.
Gameplay-wise, I haven’t been this captivated by a strategy RPG since I first played Fire Emblem (the Blazing Blade) on the Gameboy Advance. Aesthetically, this is peak medieval fantasy, really feels like you’re taking part in an Arthurian Legend. The plot is kinda simple, sure, but it’s that 1980s good vs evil kind of simple that I adore.
exactly. its straighforward, but so fantastically well done, with so many unique and interesting characters bouncing off of eachother and building the world in a beautiful way.
I wouldn't mind getting a post game/new game+ for this one.
I can guarantee that if you're a Fire Emblem, Valkyria Chronicles, or any Tactical RPG game fan, you will like this game. The story will be subjective but the gameplay hits hard. Lots of customization as well. You can literally use an item on your units and change their appearance and growths.
I like this game a lot. I also like the overall feel of the tactics and battlefield. It not being turn based actually makes the world feel alive and that there are multiple troop movements all happening at the same time. Fire emblem has that problem where it feel a bit rigid and it doesn't give you that sense of a battlefield with many things happening at once.
Upgraded from a switch lite to an oled just for this. It's so good. I never thought the modern tactics genre would get so good what a great time for the oldschoolers
I hope this game is not very hard to find. Because I've checked Walmart, Target, Best Buy, Gamestop, and Amazon. They are sold out right now. I have to have this in my collection!
I found it locally at gamestop. Hope you find it soon.
the guy at gamestop today told me that the demand for this game is crazy right now. I bought the last copy at mine after they had 30 arrive yesterday. I hope you find it soon friend
The best way is to search by your zip code on any retailer sites in your area. That’s how I found a copy.
good luck man, if nothing else you can always go digital.
It's unfortunately REALLY hard to find Physically for Nintendo Switch right now. Unless you found a copy on Release then the only place to find a copy for a decent price is eBay. Nothing I've seen is over MSRP at the moment except the Monarch Edition that price has gone up
Love this game.
Would be willling to do a lot of dark things to get Odin Sphere and/or Muramasa The Demon Blade on Switch. Or PC.
Seeing Muramasa with just more pixels would be lovely.
I WANT DRAGON'S CROWN
1st time hearing about this game, but I will definitely buy this.
localization ruined it
changing characters and their character traits
I don't think that makes the game bad that localization is different lol
The demo has been a TON of fun.
@marcusclark1339 all the localization examples ive seen arent even bad, if youre really that unhappy, switch the game to japanese, weeb
I’m about 40 hours in and the game is AMAZING. To me, it’s a better version of Fire Emblem.
@@selendile030 nice, I also like fire emblem
Vanillaware keeps on giving bangers after bangers. Every game is instant buy for me. But Aegis Rim holds special place in my heart. Probably because of SF setting. I still think it's their best game made in terms of story and how engaging it is. I'm not a huge fan of fantasy/medieval setting but I'll give it a shot.
The new ogre battle
That's what I was thinking. Finally something similar to March of the black queen
This game is addicting. Since the release day, the games stays in my mind when the controller isn’t in my hand. That’s something I haven’t experienced with a games in quite a while.
Great review and great job adapting it into a video
This review is great. It's the best I've seen at explaining the tactics, thank you!
i was deciding between this and triangle strategy. i ended up downloading the demo for both games and it was really hard to choose but the hardcore ff/octopath traveler fan that i am just couldn’t resist the pixel 2d art style of triangle strategy. i am loving it so much that i played it all day yesterday! lol but now i may still have to pick this up because the demo was amazing too.
That sounds like a ton of fun. And usually when I see a collector's edition I roll my eyes and ignore, but it came with a card game. And now I want it.
Great review.
UO wont get the recognition it deserves, but everyone who plays it will know how goated it really is
Indeed
this game is the definition of "if you know, you know" GOTY.
This wasn't in my radar at all, but after trying the demo inmediately went and bought it, this it's gonna eat all my free time, so looking forward to it.
Oh snap! I didn’t realize vanillaware did this game! I absolutely loved and was obsessed with 13 Sentinels, had it on my switch and PS and I platinumed it too! Love love love that game. Sooo hopefully that means this game is good too. Have yet to play the demo, guess I’ll be doing that immediately!
i played 10 hours in normal and thought this is too easy so i started new game in expert mode got fck by shaman 10/10 for me
Hahaha
You can just switch the difficulty
@@mikethepokemaster2012 no i wanna start fresh
Id love a fe with an artstyle like this
❤😃👍🏽
Imagine this with pokemon.
I would love a FE with an overworld map like this.
I really hope Nintendo collabs with Vanillaware to make it happen. Apparently VW's CEO had to pay money out of his own pocket to fund this game which is odd because you'd think Sega/Atlus would have helped. I hope Nintendo can help fund their future projects like they did with Octopath and SMT V.
Echoes was a nice departure, visually. I hope we do get an FE with this kind of style someday!
Aaaaaah Im so excited for this one
I know it’s early in the year but this will most likely be my game of the year
yea nah nothings comin close to this for me. as soon as i saw vanillaware i knew. and even then im still blown away at just how absolutely fantastic this game is. wow vanillaware is the goat.
I wish this was a Tactics RPG like Tactics Ogre as opposed to a Strategy RPG like Ogre Battle.
Very different gameplay, yet people (not Nintendo Life thankfully) keep calling this a Tactics RPG...... frustrating.
Absolutely stellar review! Fully agree that the story is not the game's strongest aspect but everything else just outweighs the "negatives" it's totally a GOTY contender for me!
It's really awesome and the gameplay loop is addictive. Can't wait to get back in there and conquer some more lands, get supplies to my cities and find those juicy juicy new units.
So good.
I wasn't paying much attention to it and then played the demo. I wasn't into the auto combat part and about an hour in I couldn't stop. I like how you have to expand your domain by exploring.
I thought all the “masterpiece” comments were being hyperbolic like I usually find them to be. I’d already had standard edition preordered so I just played it for myself to see. Well now I’ve also ordered a collectors edition and convinced my husband to play the extra copy himself. It’s ridiculously good.
I’ve gotten all of vanillawares previous games and thought they were ok. This is the first I immediately love.
Yeah, I feel the same about Vanillaware. They make really beautiful games, but this is the first one that has just blown me away.
I initially turned my nose up at it because of the auto-battler system. Then I decided to just give it an actual chance, and 5-6 hours later, I had stayed up way too late, and then ordered the Monarch Edition. I'm 15 hours into the game and loving it.
I first played Dragon's Crown, then Leifthrasir, Aegis Rim, then this gem. I wish them more success imho
This game is everything.
Can you share what you are smoking or drinking?
Why are you hovering in the comments section waiting for positive comments to shoot down
@Viviorkogaming can you share what happened to your brain and why it no longer functions?
@@Viviorkogamingdo your parents know you're online unsupervised
@@xacmashe3852 , bad taste. I deleted it.
Seriously though. This game is not everything unless you’re the one who made it and it literally puts food on your table.
Seems like The Last Remnant combat wise a bit. Im in love
Can’t wait until I’m done with my current game I’m playing. I’ll be jumping into this next.
Game needs to come with a warning. "Dont forget to eat and sleep when playing".
Great game that gets better (and deeper) as you play. Especially once you get into the “tactics” screen
How does it fare with triangle strategy? It's currently my go to, but im looking for another game to alternate with.
I’m over 24 hours into the game and I’m not even close to the end. This game is massive.
I hope they release the full soundtrack at some point!
I believe soundtrack is in the Monarch Edition.
Loved the demo so much! Can't wait to get the full game!
Played the demo and I was sold… so addictive and endless fun
Picked this up on release day, best tactical RPG I've played since Fire Emblem Awakening!
It is great. The demo is incredibly long for a demo. I would love to get more Vanilaware games. I wish we could get Muramasa and Odin Sphere sequels or at least Muramasa remaster/remake.
I really hope Muramasa comes to Switch before it's lifespan
I’m dumbfounded VW has ever got the chance to bring a remaster Princess crown worldwide.
VW needs to just bring all of their games to switch that’s for sure.
7:32 did somebody say Rock and Stone!?
I don’t normally do a lot of rpg’s, but this is about to go on the must get list..
May have missed it but is there any Post-game content to do?
Helpful review, thank you. This one is on my list!
blown away by how good this is. spent so much time on the demo alone!
Wish I bought the collector’s edition
Can't find a copy right now crazy.
Must admit, the reveal trailer didn't do much for me when I saw it. However having played the demo, and reading the reviews, I need to buy it now. Also this review reminded me I haven't beaten 13 Sentinels yet.... must correct that.
I’m going to have to buy this aren’t I? Looks amazing
I reeeeaaaaally want this but budget is tight, sadly. Playing the demo.
Watching this after buying the game thanks to the amazing demo 😅
Game went on sale at Gamestop for $40 for a little bit hubby and I grabbed a copy. Played the demo transfered the save and I'm enjoying every minute of the game. 😊
I’ve been really overspending lately so this one will have to wait but it’s on the waitlist
Just got it today, i can not wait to play this one!
Game looks great, I enjoyed the demo and have my physical switch copy ready to go but I might hold off as I have heard from a lot of people online that even on expert if you are doing a lot of side content you quickly outpace the majority of challenge and that is very disappointing if true. I did find the demo too easy on expert but assumed that was because of early areas only. Hardest difficulty should be a damn challenge. I don't want to put self imposed restrictions on myself while playing to MAKE it tough. That's what the difficulty settings are there for. I shall find out for myself soon enough however. Currently hooked on sea of thieves so might wait a bit and see if they update it with something. :D Hope all enjoy it however! Great to have more tactics games on the market.
I'm not too far into the game on the third hardest setting and so far it's been pretty easy. my characters are between lv3-6 so probably too early to tell
idk im about 25-30 hours in and it gets pretty fucking tough. its pretty well paced id say. the bigger battles have all been very challenging for me.
@@scragglie nice!
Game has been my video game crack since Friday. Absolutely amazing.
It’s Fire emblem on crack, and just way better gameplay loops
Looks amazing All vanillaWare games are too good. I will get this and play at work !
Do I understand it right that on the battle scene you cannot control your units? It is some kind of autobattler there?
it's all about unit and squad preparation. before fighting, make sure your tactics are set up properly or else you lose the fight. squad complexity goes up the higher lvl'd the enemy units are from you. at first, you can only have a 2-3 man squad. When you fight with endgame units, they are always a 5-man squad that synergizes with each other most of the time.
This is one of the reasons why at the early stage of the game (demo) are so shallow because you can only see the basics of combat in-game. by the mid-endgame, you need to utilize efficient tactics setup and unit synergies to survive/win in a fight.
Take note that Vanillaware aren't known for having difficult games. You just need to know how to take advantage of systems that was provided to you, just like any other turn-based tactical RPGs (even though they say that this game is "realtime", it is still turn based since you can pause the fight whenever you want to move a unit).
@@SoulbreakerNB great response, thank you!
Sounds like Dragon Force
When i was a kid, i loved Ogre Battle. Never got into Tactics though. This style is exactly right.
Being heavily into fire emblem despite not being into anime and its tropes, this looks SUPER good!
You a 4channer?
I knew Zion would take this one.. although, I'm a bit surprised that Zion hasn't even put his personal thoughts into this video.
17 hours in...
From not knowing about its existence a week ago to absolute 💕
I so wanted to play it, but I had not idea it was an auto-battler. I'm so glad it had a demo so I could give it a try and realize it was not for me.
Where's the Muramasa and Grim Grimoire in that Vanillaware lineup? That PC copy is nice.
Grim Grimoire is on the Switch.
Played it for 3 days straight, a must buy ❤
Its unreal how good this game is
When Brigandine Legend of Forsena and Aegis Rim had a kid! And, It’s great!
Still need to get my hands on that BRIGANDINE on switch.
I would love if they would release a Princess Crown or Grand Knights history remake/remaster ..btw playing Grim Grimoire ( og version) atm
This game fucking RULES. I’m enjoying this perhaps more than any fire emblem game I’ve ever played.
Just imagine another FE old game with this Battle System. Holy Naga I'd buy it too
I ordered mine weeks ago on ebay due to stores not having any in stock…
Still waiting for it…
Big think for hardcore srpg enthusiasts, this game is REALLY easy. Once you figure out the game's systems it crumbles so fast under it so don't go in expecting a nail biting experience for anyone that is seasoned in higher diffiulty srpgs.
Oh another Zion! Hi! Awesome vid btw. Loved it
It was needed! Much need!
I though the demo was already the full but is not. This is an amazing game for people who loves SRPGs.
Amazing game. Got the collectors edition and it’s worth it
Deputy Editor Alana -thanks!
Yes. The answer is yes. But still watch the vid
Adore this game so much. I do also hope we get ports of the cult classic Vanillaware games 'Muramasa: The Demon Blade' and 'Dragon's Crown' in near future ❤
dont forget odin sphere! that game is phenominal!
When I grow up, I wanna write like Alana always rights 💖
First look, it feels an awful like Ogre Battle in a number of ways. That's not a bad thing, I have been hoping for a new Ogre Battle game in years. So it looks like I will give this a go. Thanks for the review.
I couldn't get through 20 minutes of the demo. I am glad everyone is having a great time. Its just not for me.
This game is sold out everywhere its sold.
Kinda sounds like triangle strategy with a twist
Will this be available in steam in the near future?
Just get an emulator. It's quite easy to find online.
I don't really think the story is an issue. The fact that it's a collection of interwoven local tales as opposed to a giant central tale isn't a bad thing; it really matches the gameplay perfectly. It's a story about a prince liberating the world, and he does it one skirmish at a time, in whatever order makes sense. If they had tried to cram an epic fantasy narrative into the game, it would feel at odds with the core gameplay loop.
Tactics Orgre LUCT pulled it off. There was a bigger plot mixed in with the liberation/conquest storylines that game had.
So there's a timer for the battles?
Yes
Good way to reduce “smash head on brick wall until profit” strategy.
Most battles rarely causes to near the timers limit it’s similar to VW’s previous game, “13 sentinels aegis rim.” it goes without saying if you are too pessimistic, you’ll risk the timer running out. normal difficulty you’ll never have to worry about that and even tactical difficulty isn’t that much of a problem either.
The timer is one of my nitpicks but its still a fantastic game.
first time playing a vinnilaware game and damn its addicting
This was such a wonderful surprise
I wish I could still find a physical copy of this game for Switch where I'm at. The ones I found has it's price skyrocketed even for the pre-owned ones.
this game is so good dude
