I think everyone noticed it at 0:21. That was a excellent intro, by the way, with the tram setting the scene and serving as a curtain opening.

      Nicely done video Elise.
I made a point, rightly or wrongly of leaving my name on one of the walls underground before it got filled in. Who knows in years to come, some entrepid explorers might see my name and wonder who I was. Keep the vids coming 👍

Even in the middle of Sheffield you still manage to explore a dark hole in the ground.

It's interesting when you consider that a great deal of city architecture is very much designed around what they _think_ will be the best use of the space for the current/popular means of transportation. This is such a perfect example of it! In many Western nations, from about the 1950s to the 1980s, everything was about "the car" and trying to cater almost solely to it with pedestrian, bicycle, transit and other uses of a space being a second thought. In many cases, like this Sheffield example, it so alienated the space from general public appeal (outside of a car), that it broke the usage. I see a lot of cities, my own included (London, ON, Canada), making huge efforts to take roads and spaces and do very much the opposite now, prioritizing people, bicycles and transit while presenting the spaces as desirable to be in. I guess we'll have to wait another 30 to 50 years to see if it works out the way they hope. :)
Thanks again for making such neat videos that really hit on interesting topics!

Excellent - post war 20th century shopping centres were often odd, this one seems more peculiar than most!

This location seems to fit in well with your overall theme of exploring holes in the ground. You *really* are good at presenting as your anxiety (as you mentioned) does not appear to detract from your grace and decorum. Those of us living with anxiety understand and are encouraged by your tenacity.

Ah I knew about the Hole in't Road but actually never realised it was at Castle Square! Lots of older Sheffieldites are very nostalgic for it!

It had definitely seen better days by the end, and the Tram that goes over it has been enormously convenient for the city (did you know that the Council initially drew up plans for an elevated monorail, which would have allowed the Hole to stay?) but still...I sort of miss it. It was our own little subterranean shopping precinct, with a huge fish tank built into the wall. It had character and I was sad to see it go.

Another nice video. Some of your videos are at a slightly different ratio - there is a black bar at the top. Is there any reason for this - or just for artistic effect?

At least you are honest enough to leave your bloopers in - I edit mine out. Perhaps I should 'b roll' them at the end like you do.

I lived in Sheffield for nearly 7 years. I'd heard about the Hole in t'Road, but never saw much about it. I wonder if there's anything remaining below ground such as foundations or parts of walls or old paving (as an archaeologist my mind often wanders in that direction)

that sounds like it would have been a really cool place to visit. I'm pretty sure Atlanta Georgia in the US has some similar-ish underground architecture that was put in for the olympics.
I visited Atlanta a couple of times as a teen for conferences and I noticed some intriguing sunken roadways downtown that I really wanted to explore, but being a teen and part of a group I wasn't able to sneak away. probably a good thing, I heard those areas were rife with crime, just like the Hole in t' road

It wasn't that crime ridden, there was some anti social behaviour, the drunks used to gather on the benches sometimes to keep out of the rain as it was under shelter but generally they were no bother. It was generally an ok place during the daytime, sometimes there was the smell of pee in places after a Friday or Saturday night. I rarely went through there late at night l, maybe a couple of times but I don't remember it being that threatening of a place.

It was NEVER called the hole of Sheffield...It was called 'The Hole In the Road'.. The concete construction and methods used to build it were ingenious. The slant made it even better. Then they filled it in and built....Nothing...Awful shame.
