    Fun fact: Coraline has Tim Burton vibes bc it was directed by Henry Selick, who also directed Nightmare Before Christmas! Crazy that Tim Burton didn’t direct that one either-just wrote and produced it 👀

    • @laura_B24
      @laura_B24 10 місяців тому +38

      I was about to say! Thank you for saying it. It's so sad honestly that Tim's name is on it and not Henry's, while Henry did most of the things. Also I don't know if you've watched 'the movies that made us' on Netflix? Because they had a Nightmare Before Christmas episode and if I remember correctly he didn't really produce and write it either! I think he only came up with a basic concept and Disney said 'ok here is the money go make it' or something (I'm not for sure though, has been a while I've seen the episode)

    • @rookstory3
      @rookstory3 10 місяців тому +8

      I was going to say this too! It was a conversation I had with a lot of people when Coraline first came out and they were mad it was "by the director of Nightmare Before Christmas" but wasn't Tim Burton. There was another movie that came out the same year, "9", which was a short movie produced by Tim Burton but not written or directed by him that had a similar but opposite issue lol

      I remember watching a short documentary about the production of TNBC and Burton was barely even there when the movie was being made. He was doing Batman at the time and TNBC was an afterthought of his.

      I will always stand up for Henry Selick. He deserves so much credit that is unfortunately given to Tim Burton just because he got his name slapped onto things. it is not Tim Burton's Nightmare Before Christmas. it is Henry Selick's

      Adding on to this: Wildwood by Colin Meloy is the first in a middle grade trilogy that reminded me soooo much of OTGW when I first read it!!! A girl and her friend get lost in the woods while trying to find her brother, and they come across a whole world of talking animals and magic. It also has beautiful illustrations throughout :)

    I'm surprised that no one asked for pirates, but if anyone wants to read a book that feels very automnal, rainy and that includes boats, I would recommend "the devil and the dark water". It takes place in the 16th century, there's a mystery, a very harsh life at sea for our main characters, a little romance going on to but to me, the book was very very vibey and i loved reading about life at sea.

    idk if anyone has already mentioned it but for a similar to Over The Garden Wall type middle grade book, there is this is short graphic novel called Garlic and The Vampire and its absolutely PERFECT and it has a sequel too called Garlic and the Witch. For a cute and heartwarming classic I recommend the Canterville Ghost by Oscar Wilde. It's short and sweet and about an American family who moves into an old English manor haunted by the hapless, overly dramatic ghost of a dead English nobleman. He can't successfully scare any of them because the adults take themselves too seriously and the twins start pranking him, so the daughter takes it upon herself to help him out. It's also really funny

    My dissertation was on creepy mushroom books! I'd recommend anything by Jeff VanderMeer, specifically the Ambergris trilogy (starting with City of Saints and Madmen, but push through!! The last two books are more conventional novels), and Dead Astronauts. Fungi (the short story collection), Sorrowland by Rivers Solomon The Beauty by Aliya Whiteley (very short novella), and I've heard the Rosewater Trilogy by Tade Thompson is good!

    I found it, the ultimate Over-The-Garden-Wall-vibes book!! It's "The Lantern's Ember," by Colleen Houck. I'll admit I'm only 9 chapters in, and originally I wanted to wait until I finished it to leave this comment, but I *just can't contain myself.* The story is set in rural New England and has, among other plot points, a character who made a deal with a demon in order to save his town, and ended up getting tricked into becoming one of the "Lanterns" -- immortal beings who essentially patrol the borders between the mortal world and the Otherworld. He even carries his soul around inside a jack-o-lantern! We've got dark autumnal woods, witches, a Samhain festival in a rustic little town, misty-rainy weather, a covered bridge, a spectral horse, all sorts of creatures from folklore, and a mortal character who crosses over into the Otherworld (guided by a character who says he's taking her "to meet the High Witch," but who may have some ulterior motives) -- and, again, this is just 9 chapters in. The only way you're gonna get more "Over The Garden Wall" than this, would be to rewatch the actual show! :)

    Some other recommendations if anyone is interested 🍂
    0:45 A good one is Wayward Children series by Seanan McGuire. It is an academy in the middle of a forest and it is a dark but quite endearing story.
    13:35 This Poison Heart by Kalynn Bayron. It's sapphic and our main character has powers, she must learn to control them to discover the secrets hidden in her inheritance.
    16:15 They Never Learn by Layne Fargo. Scarlett Clark is an exceptional English professor. But she’s even better at getting away with murder (plus is sapphic).
    18:15 The Last House on Needless Street by Catriona Ward. A lot of rain in this book. One of the characters has a trauma associated with the rain. Fog vibes.
    27:15 The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde by Robert Louis Stevenson. Very short book. The atmosphere I think of every time I read the word gothic, dark and gloomy london.
    14:46-28:06 Silver Under Nightfall by Rin Chupeco. Forbidden, enemies to lover, queer vampire romance. Remy, an elite bounty hunter of rogue vampires meets Xiaodan, vampire heiress and her infuriatingly arrogant fiancé, vampire lord Zidan. As the three face dangerous hardships during their journey, Remy develops fond and complicated feelings for the couple. He begins to question what he holds true about vampires, as well as the story behind his own family legacy.
    I hope you like some of these. 🍂Thanks Leonie for all the recommendations, this month I plan to read These Violents Delights! 🍂

    For Over the Garden Wall vibes, I would totally recommend the graphic novels "Garlic and the Vampire" and "Garlic and the Witch", by Bree Paulsen! They're totally cute and wholesome, with all the fall vibes we could wish 🤎

    For a heartwarming classic for fall; I'd always say either Little Women or Anne of Green Gables. For a book similar to Over the Garden Wall, I'd recommend Snow and Rose. It's not quite the same, but I feel like the vibes are there.

    Small Spaces by Katherine Arden is PERFECT Over the Garden Wall Vibes! It's definitely a little scarier than Over the Garden Wall, but it has that great "lost in the woods" vibe. It's a middle-grade horror series of four books (the first one takes place in the Fall, the second in Winter, etc) and it's sooo atmospheric!!

    Over the Garden Wall vibes in an adult novel: The Buried Giant by Kazuo Ishiguro. It’s more Arthurian than OTGW, but it’s about an old couple that goes on a journey through the wilderness to find their son, but there’s a fog surrounding them that hinders their memories. One of my fav books ever!

    Heartwarming Classic for Autumn: Northanger Abbey by Jane Austen. A girl goes with her two new friends to their old house in the country and, due to her obsession with Gothic novels, she begins to wonder if her friends' father murdered their mother because he never seems to like talking about her and refuses to let them go in certain parts of the house (including her old bedroom). It's one of Austen's lesser talked about works, but my absolute favorite of hers. It's also her shortest novel and a satire of the books she enjoyed reading herself when she was a teenager, and when I was a teen, I too was obsessed with Gothic lit (and still am in my late 30s.)
    A queer Gothic vampire story: Carmilla by J. Sheridan LeFanu. It predates Dracula and is a lesbian vampire story. :)
    A horror book you can read in one sitting: (it really depends on how fast you read, but...) My personal go-tos for quick horror novels are: The Haunting of Hill House by Shirley Jackson, Tales of Mystery and Imagination by Edgar Allen Poe, The Fall of the House of Usher by EAP, and Turn of the Screw by Henry James.
