My 1000 is on life support which I brought back from the dead after 2 weeks of playing with it. The notorious button cover is long gone but it works. Us older folks, I'm 70, need the larger real estate screen to see where we're going. I'm looking forward to its arrival in the mail.
Randonneuring can sometimes require 40+ hours of charge so the battery pack feature is very good. When I did PBP last year, I needed every ounce out of the 70+ hour battery life out of the 830 + battery pack.
that battery life is a real plus, I am currently a Roam user and get a good 16hours out of it, same profile I get 36hrs with this ... thats a big plus if need to upgrade
Great review as always. Id be interested touch screen sensitivity with full finger gloves (riding in winter). Throw in some rain. My interest is the navigation function in particular. I have been doing some gravel bike riding and found it a frustrating with the 1030 to have to stop and take my gloves off to explore the navigation screen
I have a 1000, I want my new Garmin to be as instant quick as that Karoo shown. Still happy with it (added a 32gig micro sd card and uploaded the new map just last Sunday). Still a nice unit and improvement and thanks for the quick look. Quality as always!
I am not a fan of touch screens for various reasons, especially when it comes to rain. I do like a lot of the features on the 1030 plus. I decided to upgrade from the 130-Plus, therefore I'm hoping that you are correct with the rain test demonstration. I could not help but notice that your demonstration 10:10 was not in the pouring rain. It appeared to be underneath a cover of some sort. I guess I will find out the first time I get caught in the pouring rain, and I am relying on my touch screen not to jump around, and still react to my touch screen inputs. I can hardly wait for my unit to arrive. Thanks for the review. They help a lot when it comes to final decision-making.
the new beep is well known as aficionado from the former Garmin Etrex Vista i started years ago. I missed that intense sound with the then upcomming Garmins so much. Great to have that back again. :-)
Great review. Looks like Garmin is stepping up their game a bit in response to all the competition. Finally! I am still super happy with my 530 but look forward to the enhancements you mention here like to LiveTrack since I ride alone quite often.
None of the routes, trend lines, navigation ever worked for me on the regular 1030. Just ended up using it to record my rides for training and check the time of day.
Great video. Concerning the screen halo. I had my 820 replaced by Garmin once because of the halo only to have the second unit look just as bad within a year. Is it that hard to manufacture a screen that doesn't halo? At this point I won't buy another Garmin until I know that is fixed.
I have the edge 1000. I use for road, xco and trail. Is it worth the upgrade? I run and swin too and use forerunner 945. The edge 1000 doesn't offer load exercise and vo2max info on the bike, so my garmin connect health and fitness status is never accurate with my run and swin activities.
Can you comment on the display clarity or PPI? GPlama said it looks "fuzzy" in his review, I'm afraid they did nothing to increase display clarity and are just upscaling the GUI.

I have the 1030 and I like it. Not sure the updates on the plus are worth and upgrade. I wish Garmin would upgrade the software - you only get climb info when you are in navigation mode but not segment info. Segments are only popped when not in navigation but you don’t get climb info. But somehow I still can ride my bike. 🤔. Great review as they always are.

I upgraded my Edge 800 to this one today!. Have not been able to try it out yet cause of rain, but i tlooks really nice. I wanted to use the extended arm mount first, but it feels so stiff to mount the Edge in that one, so I directly thought this is why some peoples edges plastic has broken. So right now i mounted it in my old edge 800 that felt normal to mount :) The touch feels actually a bit slower than the Edge 800 for some reason, but it has so much more features that i Dont care :D
Yeah, I do wonder when we'll see it cross over to the cycling division. Perhaps the battery gains just aren't worth it there relative to how big a battery you can fit inside. I'll have to ask sometime.

The pause and re-route feature seem like a huge improvement my 830 is terrible for rerouting. Why is it a 1030 only feature? screen size? maybe more difficult on the small 830.
How long does it take to transfer the settings/activity profiles/sensors? Does it only do it on initial setup? Is it possible to initiate this process on your own after initial setup? How do you know its doing it?
Maps everywhere is huge. I bought my Fenix 6 while on vacation in Europe and didn't even think about the fact that I would only get Europe maps and wouldn't have anything once I got back to the States. It's been one of my only regrets about the watch. Spent so much time trying to work with third party maps, but it was too much of a PITA.
Thinking about scenario where I am riding during cold weather, goes off the route and having to remove gloves in cold weather to select an option; the "new re-routing quick options" at around 5:55, do they need to be selected using touch screen or using buttons? Right now trying to decide between wahoo road and garmin 1030 plus and the practicality around such situations to help me decide. Thanks.
Great video Ray! I think the new screen looks so much better. I really would have steered people away from the 1030 two days ago. This looks like a solid option if people want the top of the line device. Still feel like the value prop is a little better on the 530. 🤷🏻♂️
I think the screen on the 1030 plus is the same screen that Garmin is using on current 1030’s. The 1030’s that have had the blue halo, Garmin has replaced with refurbished units with the new screen. I don’t think it looks better.

There's definitely a difference. It's a different screen than the original-original Edge 1030's. My Edge 1030 was a recent refurb unit (like, last week recent from back from support), so I'm not really sure if I'm comparing apples to apples or to pears anymore. Garmin is saying though that the Q1 2019 Edge 1030 screen change for the blue halo was/is different than the new Edge 1030 Plus screen which is the same as the Edge 830 tech-wise. Anyway, I've got another screen/routing/etc video coming up on it tomorrow or so.
@@Dcrainmaker What is the screen TSC version on the 1030 plus? The original screen TSC version on the 1030 was 85.11 and the replacement screen for the blue halo is 86.04.
The bigger screen & the mapping would be the only reasons I would consider going back to Garmin from Wahoo. If Wahoo released something along these lines they could take my money.

Haha! I JUST bought my 830 on Saturday. To be honest, I like the form factor/size of the 830 MUCH better, and I'm glad they didn't update the 830...because then I'd be REALLY upset. how does the navigation compare to the 530? i hate that it doesn't really show me the route where to turn left/right instead it just shows a general left/right and i'm so confused which road it actually is and plenty of times i turn wrong. imagine a quick left/right/left the 530 is nonsense and i need to recheck with gmaps on my phone
@@Dcrainmaker it does show, but i''m somewhere else, don't even know where to see street names. i also find then the re-navigation horrible on the 530, gmaps would always route me back instead of "off route, u-turn". i love the 530, but the navigation is really not for m :/

I have an Edge 1030 and the plus offers nothing that would make me want to change until the 1030 breaks. They have updated 2 of the main things that could be improved though....processor speed and the screen. In terms of features, the original 1030 offers more than enough in my opinion :)
Yeah, I have to agree with this. To shell out $599 for basically the same thing is absurd. They really should have reduced the price of the device to lure loyal Garmin owners to upgrade. At this point, it makes ZERO sense.
I was thinking the exact same thing. In fact, I bought the 1030 a few months ago when the price dropped a great deal and everyone was anticipating a whole new model coming. In fact, I have on my 1030 much of what is on the Plus.

And for me, it is completely fine as I got money back for my broken 1030 and my new 1030 plus is on the way... :) Sure, it is not worth for existing 1030 users, maybe with USB-C it could be a deal-breaker .

So, question: Because I'm me, and I can't possibly ever have anything that is mainstream, I have a Garmin Edge Explore. I don't have a power meter, and that's really the only difference between the Explore and the more common Edge models. So I'm curious if any of these updates will eventually make their way to the Explore model? You mention other Edge models, but not the Explore. I am hopeful that the answer is yes.

The current re-routing (or lack of) on the Edge 530 is infuriating so this is a welcome addition and will hopefully trickle down. But Garmin’s choice of the micro-usb instead of usb-c on a new device in 2020 is unforgivable.

I recently purchased both the Edge 1030 Plus for myself and the 830 for my son, according to your review the screens should be identical apart from size but I noticed that the 830 had a much brighter and crisper display, the blacks are black where as in the 1030 plus they're kinda grayish, was that also your experience or did I get a faulty device? I tried fiddling with the brightness but no improvement, even the images in your video are much brighter than my device. appreciate your feedback so I can return the device in case it's faulty. Seeing as 1030 Plus is the only Garmin device that allows for free world maps, is it possible to go into the files on the 1030 Plus and copy a map file to drag and drop onto something like a Garmin Edge 530 that doesn't have that map?

Does livetrack actually work now? What about bluetooth? Not having bluetooth working on my 1030 is my main gripe. I just treat it like an 800 with wifi now.
what's your recommendation for a garmin unit to mount on a TT bike during an ironman 140.6 (between the aerobars). i cant seem to make up my mind, I like the 1030 plus, but it seems too big and has way too much for my needs (which are some long training sessions, and races), 830? or 530?, the updated 130 ? i know that the answer would most likely be (it depends on what you need), i currently dont have a head unit, and read most of the data from my fenix (power, HR, cadence, speed, etc.) but it's too small, and its hard to read while in aero position (not to mention toggling screens to get all the data i would like to see.. ) , recommendations would be greatly appreciated
if you have an 830 can you get worldwide maps? i have an EU 830, live in the states. I had to *borrow* a US 830 and copy to my computer just to get US maps.
The real question here is if those will be released for old 1030. Due to radio silence and confusing naming scheme going with Garmin I bought my 1030 just a month ago, and now am kinda pissed due to paying basically full price for device just a moment before new version (with same exact price...)
@@Janz_u There are features (as outlined) coming to the original Edge 1030, but not that specific one. Realistically, no company pre-announces announcements. Sometimes they leak, but that's it.
Hey Ray, I hope you see this! Just a question. Just picked up a 1030 Plus, and it’s hard to explain, but my screen kind of looks ‘fuzzy’ (like an old CRT tv). Is this normal? Doesn’t look like this video has it.
Actually wish the alerts were even louder, seriously. I wear hearing aids off the bike but not on it due to sweat and their expense. I couldn't hear the plus through this video without the aids in but could with them in, maybe in person it'll be better and I would hear it on the bike. I can't hear the original 1030 alerts except the crash with or without the hearing aids, quite certain it's the frequency used and my limited hearing range. Everyone else can hear my 1030 so I know it's not a problem with the device. Would give me a bit more comfort with my Varia to hear alerts is all.
I still have the 1000. Can I transfer all my data (Activity Profiles, sensors, settings, etc.) from the 1000 to the 1030 plus ? ALSO: Will I need to install more memory when I get this, or does it have 32gb ?

What is the difference between the 1030 Plus and 830 besides the size display and battery life? Not sure which one to buy for a racehorse bike...
My opinion, FWIW? Go for the 830. Smaller device. Less prone to snap off the mounting tabs in the back on bumpy roads.

Like the Edge 530, it shows you the exact streetname you're turning on. So, that's definitely odd that you're not seeing that on your Edge 530.

I guess updating Garmin maps. Other maps like OSM goes over regular USB. Firmware goes over WiFi.

That would be a pretty massive upgrade. Though, you'd get like 95% of it by just going to the Edge 830.

I have an Edge 1030 and the plus offers nothing that would make me want to change until the 1030 breaks. They have updated 2 of the main things that could be improved though....processor speed and the screen. In terms of features, the original 1030 offers more than enough in my opinion :)
Yeah, I have to agree with this. To shell out $599 for basically the same thing is absurd. They really should have reduced the price of the device to lure loyal Garmin owners to upgrade. At this point, it makes ZERO sense.
I was thinking the exact same thing. In fact, I bought the 1030 a few months ago when the price dropped a great deal and everyone was anticipating a whole new model coming. In fact, I have on my 1030 much of what is on the Plus.
@@Big2Planker This is just an update to fix all the issues they had and move to the same HW (Sony GNSS) they have in other devices. And for me, it is completely fine as I got money back for my broken 1030 and my new 1030 plus is on the way... :) Sure, it is not worth for existing 1030 users, maybe with USB-C it could be a deal-breaker .
@Hans Newer units are not affected by this issue (this was the main reason why I have returned my unit...)
Ross Fripp how about the flimsy mount ears? Have they updated those? No point in paying premium to have them break and not be covered by warranty.
Can't get my farm in to speak or tell me to turn anymore before to turn comes. Do you know why. Won't read out my avg speed and power, etc.

So, question: Because I'm me, and I can't possibly ever have anything that is mainstream, I have a Garmin Edge Explore. I don't have a power meter, and that's really the only difference between the Explore and the more common Edge models. So I'm curious if any of these updates will eventually make their way to the Explore model? You mention other Edge models, but not the Explore. I am hopeful that the answer is yes.
Pretty sure i once saw one of your videos where you had a overview over all edge release dates. But i cant find the video again. Do you still have that list? Or maybe know where i can find it? :)
The current re-routing (or lack of) on the Edge 530 is infuriating so this is a welcome addition and will hopefully trickle down. But Garmin’s choice of the micro-usb instead of usb-c on a new device in 2020 is unforgivable.

I recently purchased both the Edge 1030 Plus for myself and the 830 for my son, according to your review the screens should be identical apart from size but I noticed that the 830 had a much brighter and crisper display, the blacks are black where as in the 1030 plus they're kinda grayish, was that also your experience or did I get a faulty device? I tried fiddling with the brightness but no improvement, even the images in your video are much brighter than my device. appreciate your feedback so I can return the device in case it's faulty. Thanks.
Seeing as 1030 Plus is the only Garmin device that allows for free world maps, is it possible to go into the files on the 1030 Plus and copy a map file to drag and drop onto something like a Garmin Edge 530 that doesn't have that map?
Live track is still not working on my garmin edge 1000 despite numerous emails back and forth to garmin with them saying the latest update will fix it

Yup! You can load it up and it'll control any ANT+ FE-C trainer (which is basically every trainer on the market in the last decade).
As always a fantastic review. I'm considering buying a 1030+ but have Wahoo mounts on my bikes. Is there an an adapter available that will allow me to run a 1030 on a Wahoo mount? TIA.
Does livetrack actually work now? What about bluetooth? Not having bluetooth working on my 1030 is my main gripe. I just treat it like an 800 with wifi now.
is this unit (and the 530) compatible with the older cadence/speed/ sensor and Heart monitor strap? Mine are about 10 years old

what's your recommendation for a garmin unit to mount on a TT bike during an ironman 140.6 (between the aerobars). i cant seem to make up my mind, I like the 1030 plus, but it seems too big and has way too much for my needs (which are some long training sessions, and races), 830? or 530?, the updated 130 ?
i know that the answer would most likely be (it depends on what you need), i currently dont have a head unit, and read most of the data from my fenix (power, HR, cadence, speed, etc.) but it's too small, and its hard to read while in aero position (not to mention toggling screens to get all the data i would like to see.. ) , recommendations would be greatly appreciated

if you have an 830 can you get worldwide maps? i have an EU 830, live in the states. I had to *borrow* a US 830 and copy to my computer just to get US maps.

The real question here is if those will be released for old 1030. Due to radio silence and confusing naming scheme going with Garmin I bought my 1030 just a month ago, and now am kinda pissed due to paying basically full price for device just a moment before new version (with same exact price...)
@@Janz_u There are features (as outlined) coming to the original Edge 1030, but not that specific one. Realistically, no company pre-announces announcements. Sometimes they leak, but that's it.
Hey Ray, I hope you see this! Just a question. Just picked up a 1030 Plus, and it’s hard to explain, but my screen kind of looks ‘fuzzy’ (like an old CRT tv). Is this normal? Doesn’t look like this video has it.

Actually wish the alerts were even louder, seriously. I wear hearing aids off the bike but not on it due to sweat and their expense. I couldn't hear the plus through this video without the aids in but could with them in, maybe in person it'll be better and I would hear it on the bike. I can't hear the original 1030 alerts except the crash with or without the hearing aids, quite certain it's the frequency used and my limited hearing range. Everyone else can hear my 1030 so I know it's not a problem with the device. Would give me a bit more comfort with my Varia to hear alerts is all.
I still have the 1000. Can I transfer all my data (Activity Profiles, sensors, settings, etc.) from the 1000 to the 1030 plus ? ALSO: Will I need to install more memory when I get this, or does it have 32gb ?
