My Father had a 67 white vynal top frost blue bottom. When he started the car it sounded like the Batmobile. Absolutely Beautiful Car. Very fun to drive.
I had an Olds 1966 425 from a Delmont in a 1977 442. Steel crank and very good B casting heads. This was an awesome engine that was indestructible and made so much torque at low RPMs.
I remember back in the late 60s seeing one of these cars up in the mountains in winter and thinking that the driver/ owner was crazy because they had put the snow chains on the front wheels ! Later I found out that these cars are front wheel drive. Surprised me initially. Nice looking cars.
In 1970 my friend came and picked me up in her dad's 66 Toronado and we went to go for a nice drive out in the country. You would say well that's not much of a story. It was one of the coldest winters that we ever had that I can remember and I was seventeen y/o at the time and she was too. We had 6+ inches of snow and all of the roads and bridges were all covered with ice and snow, and this is southern Louisiana. What was so great was that the only other vehicles on the road were either tractors and wreckers or 4-wheel drive trucks. This Toronado with it's front wheel drive was one of the only cars that could drive in these conditions. Hardly any cars were on the road or attempting the roads. We had a blast and then we went and played hide the weeny at the local lake. Perfect day!
When I was a young child, my oldest sister, who was almost old enough to be my mother, and my brother-in-law had a gorgeous dark emerald green Toronado. I was in awe of that car and will never forget it. I would love to have this car!
Gorgeous. When this car debuted, I was in third grade. Our classmate arrived at school in a dark green 66, and I thought the future the 64 Worlds Fair predicted had arrived.
It was so exclusive it had its own dedicated assembly line for quality control. The second generation Toronado with all of their elegance and the emphasis on personal luxury, attracted many new buyers.
This is a beautiful car. When two door cars were sporty, luxurious and roomy. Very few of these were on the road..The only thing that I remember about cars with pop up lights as a kid is they broke a lot. So many cars going around with one headlight up.
WOWWWWWWWWWWWWW, to the car and you as well, my Father had a 1966 for MANY years, his was the base model, no AC, crank windows, etcc...That's a TIMELESS design when GM was king of design
My parents bought one of these new in 66, gold color in and out. I was 7. I loved this car. Traded it for a 70 buick le sabre., coupe. That was really nice too.
I actually had a 87’ Toronado Trofeo in this color combination. Leather seats of course. What a beautiful car it was. Also had a 90’ Toronado silver/gray with light gray suede seats. Love love the Oldsmobile
Those late 80's Toronados are favorites of mine, such a beautiful car, and it still looks fresh today to me. They were kind of polarizing, people didn't like that they were downsized, but that didn't bother me, it all worked I though. On the very rare occasion that I see one on the road (very very rare) I just about break my own neck staring..total eye catcher.
The subframe design of the first generation Toronado disappeared. The second generation used a separate body on frame design similar to Series Eighty-Eight and Series Ninety-Eight. It retained its torsion bar suspension system in the front but replaced the leaf springs in the rear with helical coil springs
Really dig the headlights display! Hey, shes got a great sense of humor. The 66 Toronado is one serious survivor automobile, I never knew they had that much class!
My uncle had one of these he bought new. I was a kid and thought it was so cool. 2 years later, on a Saturday he my mom and I went to a Baskin Robbins for ice cream. The car was parked in front of the store. We're ordering ice cream and heard a crash. We turned around and saw a sand and gravel truck had side swiped his car. .front to back, drivers side gone. Fortunately no one was hurt. He got his insurance money and moved on.
I'm amazed at the finishing of American classics from the 60s and 70s. It's all very well built and refined in a way that we don't see all this refinement and good taste in today's cars.
In the Fall of ‘66, a friend’s dad came and picked us up from school in a brand new ice blue one he just bought that afternoon. Of course I jumped into I the back seat and sat right in middle so I could get a great look at the dash - the barrel speedometer was very cool, it kind looked quasi digital in 1966, outside mirrors on both sides, A/C, power everything, unique trans shifter, powerful engine with much torque, strong pulling front wheel drive. I sat in the middle in back also because no hump in floor - also very nice center console below me (unlike this stripped down version) between two front bucket seats. 50+ years later - you can tell it made one heck of an impression on me! In listening to this sales lady rev that engine, you can tell it desperately needs a tuneup - don’t buy it without making them do that or you will never know if something more sinister might be wrong. Couldn’t you see that same design 2020 updated as one of the coolest rides around? Such a great design - in all ways - GM was way ahead of its time there - too bad designs today are so conservative and don’t have much “future stretch” in them - In 1966 that car had me thinking about the Jetsons - and that we would get there in my lifetime - sad - corporate America is too risk adverse - too many lawyers, too many bean counters. Today nothing has me thinking about seeing that Jetson’s world - even if I live to 90.
She's such a beauty. The car is nice, too, way ahead of its time. My '68 Ford Fairlane had the high beams button on the floor, too. It had the other speedometer, though, the horizontal one. I would say this was a massive step up from mine, though, even on its best day.
I'm not seeing anyone saying this is one of the first front-wheel drives cars manufactured in the States. The shoe store owner I worked for bought one the first year they came out, catching rides with him. The wheels looked like big rubber back then.
I now know what happened to Colonel Klink from Hogan's Heroes. He retired to Naples Florida, found a beautiful blonde saleswoman who knows cars and likes to ride along for the demo's. Awesome !
Best ever design on an American car in American automotive history.. When she closed that passenger side door it sounded like as she was closing a vault from a bank, I heard no raddles. That must be a $60k to $100k car.
1967 was the last year big American cars had the low back seats with no head rests. Not good in a rear end collision (speaking or rear end collisions, well I won't go there) but they sure look so nice.
Wow you even look sexier than I would look in that car lol Seriously though what a design and what a car. The 425 cu 4bbl carb with duel exhaust is a smooth powerful car. I think smoother than many luxury cars of today. You’d have to drive one to understand
Really beautiful car! Correction about when the Toronado first appeared: production actually started on October 14, 1965 as the 1966 model year. Model years start production in the Autumn of the preceding calendar year. Personally, I actually have a Johnny Lightning diecast replica of this car in my collection!

I was in high school in Illinois when I walked up to the local Olds dealer who showed this. 'My God, what will Detroit think of next??' I remember thinking!
I was a little kid when my uncle bought one of these brand new. For some reason I was always scared of the headlights untill I was four. Something about those headlights were startling to my four year old mind back then.

The Toronado's design is something indescribable for a car from the 60s, it's simply surreal.
It is beautiful, those pop up headlights put it over the top. Just a stunner
This car is probably in the top 20 prettiest cars ever built.
This is just as contemporary and modern today, as it was in 1966 when it came out. Love it
Uh no. It's not modern, its 53 years old. It is totally awesome, and a beautiful classic, we had one new, when I was a kid.

This is one of the most pristine examples I've seen... Always had a yearning for one of these, as well as the riviera.... Absolutely timeless design.
This was an extremely high tech car for 1966! Absolutely beautiful!
What is amazing about this car is that it is a front wheel drive car with a 425 ci big block V8.
I had an Olds 1966 425 from a Delmont in a 1977 442. Steel crank and very good B casting heads. This was an awesome engine that was indestructible and made so much torque at low RPMs.
