The Toronado's design is something indescribable for a car from the 60s, it's simply surreal.

I remember back in the late 60s seeing one of these cars up in the mountains in winter and thinking that the driver/ owner was crazy because they had put the snow chains on the front wheels ! Later I found out that these cars are front wheel drive. Surprised me initially. Nice looking cars.

In 1970 my friend came and picked me up in her dad's 66 Toronado and we went to go for a nice drive out in the country. You would say well that's not much of a story. It was one of the coldest winters that we ever had that I can remember and I was seventeen y/o at the time and she was too. We had 6+ inches of snow and all of the roads and bridges were all covered with ice and snow, and this is southern Louisiana. What was so great was that the only other vehicles on the road were either tractors and wreckers or 4-wheel drive trucks. This Toronado with it's front wheel drive was one of the only cars that could drive in these conditions. Hardly any cars were on the road or attempting the roads. We had a blast and then we went and played hide the weeny at the local lake. Perfect day!

Those late 80's Toronados are favorites of mine, such a beautiful car, and it still looks fresh today to me. They were kind of polarizing, people didn't like that they were downsized, but that didn't bother me, it all worked I though. On the very rare occasion that I see one on the road (very very rare) I just about break my own neck staring..total eye catcher.

The car was parked in front of the store. We're ordering ice cream and heard a crash. We turned around and saw a sand and gravel truck had side swiped his car. .front to back, drivers side gone. Fortunately no one was hurt. He got his insurance money and moved on.

In the Fall of ‘66, a friend’s dad came and picked us up from school in a brand new ice blue one he just bought that afternoon.
Of course I jumped into I the back seat and sat right in middle so I could get a great look at the dash - the barrel speedometer was very cool, it kind looked quasi digital in 1966, outside mirrors on both sides, A/C, power everything, unique trans shifter, powerful engine with much torque, strong pulling front wheel drive. I sat in the middle in back also because no hump in floor - also very nice center console below me (unlike this stripped down version) between two front bucket seats. 50+ years later - you can tell it made one heck of an impression on me!
In listening to this sales lady rev that engine, you can tell it desperately needs a tuneup - don’t buy it without making them do that or you will never know if something more sinister might be wrong.
Couldn’t you see that same design 2020 updated as one of the coolest rides around? Such a great design - in all ways - GM was way ahead of its time there - too bad designs today are so conservative and don’t have much “future stretch” in them -
In 1966 that car had me thinking about the Jetsons - and that we would get there in my lifetime - sad - corporate America is too risk adverse - too many lawyers, too many bean counters. Today nothing has me thinking about seeing that Jetson’s world - even if I live to 90.

Such a shame they are no longer made , they were very good cars , good motor , and very handsome models.
Just like the huge Cadillacs , I think Cadillac and Oldsmobile were the best car producers from that time.

I was a little kid when my uncle bought one of these brand new. For some reason I was always scared of the headlights untill I was four. Something about those headlights were startling to my four year old mind back then.

With 385 hp, it should have come with front discs at least. You could probably adapt a set of '70s Toro discs to it.
