I cant say thank you often enough - i am suffering from several issues due to stress and depressions, and this music is really soothing and calms my storms. Alright, I'm bored outta my skull and NEED to write something, so have a neat little story.
JC walked alone, as he set off through the streets of Harlem. Music filled the air from people celebrating his father's life. All he could do was keep walking.
Suddenly, a voice emerged from the balcony above him. A tall chubby man, his hair graying, his glasses reflecting the sunlight- what little bit there was- straight ahead, his hair grayed. The flat cap he wore seemed handmade.
"Little boy. Y' got a moment? Jus' a momen' boyo, thas' all I wan'. Old coot like me hardly got time, y'see. And for a young'un... y' seem to have so many stories. Or maybe jus' the one. Won't you sit with a poor ol' basta'd like me, boyo?"
JC took a second to think, as the man waited for the response.
"Sure, old man. I'll sit with you. Just a moment, though." JC quietly muttered.
The two began to talk about a great many things.
From oceans to mountains, cities to streets.
Finally, the old man questioned clearly to JC of his life.
"I see the rubb'r on yer shoes is peelin' and ruinin'. Y' walk from yer problems, never facin' 'em head on. What're you runnin' from?"
JC stopped. Hearing that, hearing someone else recognize that pain was a shocker.
"I uhhh... I don't know, old-"
The old man cut him off.
"Call me Bruno."
"Right. Bruno. i... I don't know what I'm running from. Where or who I'm running too. But... I'll figure it out. I always do."
Bruno looked at JC with pure sorrow.
"Y' run, and run... walk 'n walk... but there's nothin' t' go to. So y' run wit'out purpose. 'S just how things go, y' say. Not realizing all y' doin'... is hidin'. Y' say y' need a knight, or a guardian angel... but all y' needed was t' be that fer y'self... am I right, boyo? Eh, whaddami sayin'... course I am."
JC stopped for a moment, when the information hit him.
"You... know what I've been through, sir?"
Bruno took his glasses off, looking JC dead in the eyes, his eyes nearly full of tears.
"I have. I have, plenty. I'm old, boyo. I seen my momma and my pops pass on to the holy beyond... I seen my brother cross them pearly gates. I seen... I seen my best friend meet the angels, a few days ago. 'S why I'm up here. The hearse, the band... John would like me to be here. To see it... and to help you see. Boyo... its how life is. Don't let yer mournin' cloud your vision... to see the beauty in death. All it is? Just the opposite of life."
The words circled around JC's mind.
"...How do you know my father? How do you know... me?"
"I can't tell y' how I know yer father. But I can tell y' how I know you. I was around when you was just a babymans. When you was a tiny basta'd. Little man, I seen you when you was born. I was there fer y' namin'. Y' momma wanted t' name you after your pops, but also after her brother... and goin' to her french origins... yer actually JP, not JC... but... goin' by y' last name was always good for you.
Jean Carlton is betta than Jean Pierre Carlton. You stuck by that. You're still Jean Carlton."
"I... never knew."
"Y' momma coulda told you. Now, boyo... feelin' better?"
JC smiled at the old man.
"Yeah. Thanks, sir-"
"It's Bruno, young'un. Don't you forget that. And you better visit. Y' old man can't no more, so you oughta take his place. He woulda liked that."
"Sure, Bruno. Thanks. Have a nice day..."
As JC walked back downstairs and across the street, he continued on. Instead of mourning... he celebrated. Instead of mourning the death of his father, he celebrated his life.
As JC walked away... the old man watched him, nearly in tears.
"Johnny boy... that boy, he really is your son. I'll take care of 'im. With the time I got left..."
