- Gene almost falls over after one of the commercial breaks!
Nipsey Russell, Brett Somers, Charles Nelson Reilly, Rosemary Forsyth, Richard Dawson, and Joyce Bulifant - Фільми й анімація
Liked Gene a lot. Great host. Times were so different then. I miss the 70's.😿
I agree! Gene, Bob Barker, and Richard Dawson will always be my favorite hosts of that era.
C.N.R.'s answer about his wearing a sweat shirt:
"It's a game isn't it?"
Yeah, except I would expect him to wear a hair-shirt!
Lol
Interesting to see hair styles back then.
H/H match update and End-of-Week Recap:
...
~~~Today's action:
Today Rosemary played the part of the villainess when she decided to "step" instead of "wet," thus sending our champion home after one game and $2,850.
Today's audience match question: "________ Bait" (My thoughts: Live, Fish, Jail)
The celebs: Richard (Jail), Brett (Fish or cut), Nipsey (Good) -- CNR tosses in "re" as a bonus suggestion! (Spelling never counts in this game!)
The choice: Fish (It's clarified that she's going with her own answer, although it is similar to Brett's.)
The answers: Live, Jail, Fish
Notes:
1) I remembered the expressions people used in 1976 (when the poll was taken) better than the celebs at the time!
2) "Why didn't you trust me? Then we would've been playing for $2,500 instead of $5,000!" -- Oh, I guess we won't hear that line again today.
Counting today, Richard has been chosen 31 of the past 33 times. (Charles answered the remaining two questions.) Richard has matched 33 of his 85 most recent attempts (38.8%) and 16 of his last 42 attempts (38.1%).
Today's H/H question: "_______ Weather"
(My first thought was fair weather as in fair-weather friend/fan. But stormy weather comes to mind. I'm sure that was title of at least one song somewhere along the line. Edit: after the question, Brett & Charles sing a few bars of "Stormy Weather.")
As he's been doing a good deal lately, Richard seems to write at least two answers.
Our contestant references Southern California and says "Sunny" weather. That just doesn't sound like a set phrase to me, but I could be overthinking this. Her answer is definitely valid. Fingers crossed. The audience lets out a collective mega-groan though. They seem to be pulling for "Stormy."
And "Stormy" is exactly what Richard offers.
No match today.
~~~The Week that Was:
One H/H question per day, five total. Only two matches this week though: Richard 2/5
Yup, another all-Richard H/H week. Four out of the past six weeks have been all-Richard. Charles has played twice in that period, and that's the full extent of the celebrities chosen during those six weeks.
Quickly recapping this week's panelists:
*Richard* matched two out of five attempts -- average for him -- leaving his accuracy score a tad behind Brett's for yet another week.
Speaking of *Brett* , she sat idle for the seventh consecutive week.
*Charles* sat idle this week (after having one shot last week), holding steady at 50.8%, still the highest H/H accuracy score of all celebs with "mature" stats. (Orson Bean, Gary Burghoff, Jo Anne Worley, and Joyce Bulifant all currently have higher accuracy scores, but those scores are based on very limited data.)
Speaking of *Joyce* , she remains in that perma-tie with Jo Anne Worley at a 75% accuracy rating.
*Nipsey* has now finished his 14th week (of 28). His stats remain unchanged: seven attempts, zero matches.
Finally, *Rosemary* Forsyth finished her first of two weeks without playing a single H/H.
~~~Looking ahead to next week, our panel will have all familiar faces again, with our stalwart regulars being joined by:
-----Semi-regular Fannie Flagg, returning after two weeks off for what will be her 53rd week (of 90). She's still locked in that long-standing tie with Betty White - both panelists have a 50% accuracy in the head-to-head match.
-----Dick Martin, back for his fifth week (of 22 total). We last saw Dick in episodes 821-825. He hasn't yet been selected to answer a head-to-head question.
-----Finally, Sarah Kennedy, making her fifth (and next-to-last) week of "Match Game" appearances. (Her final week is on the horizon now: 1036-1040.) We last saw Sarah in 756-760, and she hasn't had a chance at the H/H yet either.
~~~Finally, here's our updated leader board showing the 11 celebs with at least 3 H/H matches, ranked by accuracy:
(Note: An asterisk before a celebrity's name signifies that she has "retired" from the show and her H/H stats are now complete.)
(Note: For tied scores, I consider the one with the greater number of matches to be higher; if the matches are equal, the celeb who first achieved that score goes on top.)
Orson Bean - 100% (4 wins in 4 attempts).
TIE: (*)Jo Anne Worley - 75% (3 wins in 4 attempts).
TIE: Joyce Bulifant - 75% (3 wins in 4 attempts).
Gary Burghoff - 71.4% (5 wins in 7 attempts).
Charles - 50.8% (33 wins in 65 attempts).
TIE: Betty - 50.0% (19 wins in 38 attempts).
TIE: Fannie - 50.0% (13 wins in 26 attempts).
Jo Ann Pflug - 44.4% (8 wins in 18 attempts).
Brett - 41.2% (28 wins in 68 attempts).
Richard - 41.0% (231 wins in 563 attempts).
Bert Convy - 33.3% (5 wins in 15 attempts).
*These stats include every head-to-head match from episode 1 through 895, excluding the lost/missing/damaged episodes: 31, 32, 33, 311, 312, 313, 324, 325, and 645. (As per MatchGameProductions, these episodes "are nowhere to be found and also aren't in the Goodson/Todman Library. Sadly, looks like they are lost forever!") -- Also, note that episode 849 was never produced.
Sometimes I get frustrated with the answers of contestants and stars in these game shows, then I realize it was 42 years ago and most have passed away.
Lol me too
OMG, NO ONE got the joke, the best answer for the Jolly Green Giant question was not "wet" it was "pea".
True, and I thought of exactly that, but no nice woman would have said it then because it sounds like 'pee'.
Yes! 🤣
For bait, I would’ve said master bait.
I kid though. I would’ve said click bait.
@@Powerranger-le4up you wouldn't have in 1977
It's interesting to note that, during the classic era, seats 1 and 4 have, by far, the most fluctuation. Seat 6 is almost always occupied by Betty, Fanny, Patti, or Joyce.
Don’t forget Marcia Wallace
I was going to add, don’t forget Kaye Stevens, before I realized everyone probably _wants_ to forget her.
@@eddieafterburner Kaye Stevens and Connie Van Dyke were the worst female panelists. Joey Bishop, Skip Stevenson, and Jon Baumann were the worst male panelists.
@@markkonzerowsky8871Add JJ Walker, Alex Karriss and Gary Burghoff. For the ladies Anne Elder was good in seat 6.
I HAD TO FIND AN EPISODE TO SPEAK MY MIND!! Unfortunately, I could not find the episode that just aired on television, so I chose this video from the same season to complain about the episode I just watched.
The second-round question was something like “Ralph found a way to help conserve water during the recent water shortage. Now, he -BLANKS- with a friend.” Well obviously the definitive answer is SHOWER OR bathe. BOTH of those are acts of washing and cleaning yourself- So the lady contestant answered “shower.” So the first panelist, Dick Martin, answers “shower.” However, Brett answers “bathes.” She acted very confident that it was a match and I agreed! But apparently, Gene and ignorant Ira disagreed, and the BUZZER sounded. After Brett, every single panelist said “bathes!” The contested had needed 4 to tie and 5 to win. And sadly, then not accepting “bathe” caused her the game and she lost.
Now, I know I am over-reacting. But I am just so SICK of them not accepting answers that SHOULD be considered matches. And this episode just pushed me over the edge!! What a STUPID decision. And WRONG decision!! They totally screwed her out of winning and money! That lady should have sued them!! ☺️ Okay, now I feel better! Thanks for letting me vent. All better now. LOL
I just love Charles! 😊😁 And Brett!
I'm very 😊 that rosemary kept it classy with her answer don't STEP on my parade
LoL different times…. Next to the industry we have now, different planet. Gene, Richard, and Soupy Sales were the way things went. Can’t look back now and apply our standards to their game. What’s the term for that-? Recentism or something. Square peg in a round hole. Evolution of existence, and round and round we go.
Rosemary Forsyth would make a welcome return to Match Game in episodes 946-950, TX Friday 15th & Monday 18th to Thursday 21st April 1977.
This was on after school right before Mike Douglas I think. Really takes me back.
1:12 - The Original Gangstah in his hoodie!!!
The Russian Club Soda...they sure didn't hide the drinking, did they?
Brett didnt hide her being drunk.
Hw threw the clock because he wanted to see
Time fly. ⏰️
You knew it was coming.
Drinking and smoking on the job, things sure have changed in SoCal.
Imagine Gene pounding a chick, lol. Bet he did a lot of it. If I was a girl I’d get clapped
All over the country.
Sometimes I regret a comment that I leave here...then I read someone else's embarrassing comment 🙃
Do you ever respond to other comments?
9:39 GSN made a reference to its "50 Greatest Game Shows" special? That's surprising.
Free Spirit flying again! ;0)
5:35 Rosemary is seen thinking to herself, “Terrific, another ‘tinkle’ answer, good lord, I’m sooooo glad this is my last episode here”
Fannie Flagg said in 1974 between shoots Brett and Charles had Martini parties and were always drunk for 2nd half hour!
Wow, I didn't know that! 🤔
It's pretty obvious with Brett
Who interviewed her?
I know Brett drank for sure, but I am not sure about Charles though
There are a couple documentaries on UA-cam about the show. One of the crew stated that there were a lot of pills floating around backstage. He said it was hard to keep the celebs in their seats. Add the liquid lunches and you can easily understand how some of episodes get out of control.
Charles Nelson Riley
is my favorite.
followed by Mama Cass .
Cass was very funny!
Lol I believe a couple of them were tipsy
Brett seems like the only one to me.
8:08 click bait would be the most popular today.
First game show in history where you didn’t have to be smart, you didn’t have to think, you just had say something stupider than the other celebs.
Most times they are hilariously funny.
He sounds a little congested. Maybe on cold medicine or something but not really drunk to me.
Who reallly cares if they have been drinking .
That was in the 70's .
Whole different society..
A better society where people didn't have their panties in a bunch over everything.
Yep, they also drink on the new episodes hosted by Alec Baldwin, and they definitely do NOT hide all of their mixed drinks there! 🤷♀️
I love all the singing in this episode! Brett sounded great singing harmonies with Charles!
The Russian “club soda” 😂
Click bait or chick bait
13:11. Walk much? lol
Gene's been on the rosé again!
Just about any episode number that ends in 4, 5, 9, or 0 (the after lunch tapings) they're all usually a bit drunk.
as much as i've loved Patty Duke, i can recall three episodes where it was OBVIOUS: the half-closed eyes, speech pattern and descheveled hair are dead giveaways...
i don't know about anyone else, but I didn't think then in the terms I do now..am seeing and hearing so much that partially explains MG's eventual downfall - and knowing the 'snafu' that occurred in episode 1005 has happened more than once resulting in a contestant returning ''out of fairness'' explains RD's eventual and more frequent explosions..started watching an episode where BOTH contestants were ''returnees''..also never thought in terms of anyone being on the sauce: it's amazing what older eyes and senses pick up on....MG is still fun to watch, though one can't avoid the inevitable 'analyses' that result.....
@@dannyhill8797 yes I definitely see it differently so many years later
I've read many comments that said Gene didn't drink. I don't remember him saying in any of the episodes I've seen. I've watched a couple documentaries about the show and none mention Gene not drinking. So I'm not sure if he was a tea totaler or not.
He wasn't tipsy. Jeez, all he did was trip.
Tipsy is putting it a little light. I'd say hammered, but not outright shitfaced.
But I don’t think Gene drinks, does he?
@@mlg1948 No Gene didn't drink at all. He says it many times on here over the years and even explains why.
@@magikp6636 thanks, for Magik.
Why didn’t Gene indulge?
@@djrmpcanada liver problems and health issues. So he didn't drink at all. He talks about it on here on occasion. And explains it. Not this episode in particular. But has over the years. Actually he just did a few months ago. It mighta been around the holidays from '76?
2021: click bait
Doesn't seem drunk, just tired
Correct, he didn't drink on set. the only people who did were Brett Sommers and just a couple other guest stars.
If you are talking about Gene , he never drank at all because he had a bad liver
He sounds a bit sniffly, and when he's been sick, it shows in the form of baggy eyes (which looks apparent)...
I never knew Renee Richards was a contestant on matchgame..
Love the ones when they are visibly drunk!
I think he had a double during the break
7:54 Did anyone else's mind go straight to click bait?
17:22 Brett
10:13 Gene: smdh
Lmao when was they not tipsy on this show? Lmao they was a hot mess
Dawson & his rubber lips.
The SJW's would go nuts today....
I noticed the "attaboy" towards Nipsy just before 14:00. Was that something Gene normally said ? A subconscious slip ? No one seemed to bat an eye. I really dislike "Good Girl" so I imagine Nipsy heard it and didn't like it.
I doubt anyone back then took the 'boy' or 'girl' after 'atta' literally. We didn't get so hung up on analyzing it and just heard the praise, the way people with any sense should do now.
Precisely.
He has called Richard and other white celebrities atta boy, as well as contestants too. Go back a few episodes and you can hear him say atta girl to Joyce.
Has nothing to do with his color, as much as some of you think it does.
Idt so people weren't so uptight about simple wording.
It was just a phrase people weren't so sensitive about everything
Sika-Korensen, round 2, question B: "Oh. I thought you meant, what does she use instead of a bra - so I said DUCT TAPE." (Bzzt!)
Question A: "Once again, I find myself out of STEP." (Bzzt!)
Super Match, part 1: LIVE
Part 2: STORMY
Korensen-Jackson, round 1, question A: "And here I thought I was picking the obvious answer. His SHOULDER PAD, of course!" (Bzzt!)
Question B: "Well, if de-bombed doesn't work, I guess DEFUSED won't, either." (Bzzt!)
Yes, as usual, you are out of step.
@@CousinOresama and you are more aggravating than Brett
@@lesburns7395 Well, that may be your opinion, but since I don't scream or cackle or sing out of tune or try to take over the show, I have no other option than to conclude that your opinion is incorrect.
Joyce is so dipsy, 98% of the time she has an answer that matches no one, player or panel
i know Joyce can be frustrating, but just about everyone who sits in that ''sixth seat' comes out with wacko answers..Joyce, Patti Deutch, (to a lesser extent) Betty White, and (to a greater extent) Patricia Neal - bka Fannie Flagg..that's the point: the comedy of the show..
that's true, i seen that too
I never cared for Joyce Bulifant, on Match Game or anywhere. She always acted like a dip.
she's got a sharp edge i wouldn't approach with a machete in my hand..bad news all around.....
Please say "ditzy", as it's well established.
Has anyone seen the episode that Betty is talking about at the end of the video at 2:50?
ua-cam.com/video/bEZkCnTKGW4/v-deo.html
Glad to see the drag queen go.
Grow up! she's married!
Rosemary is showing a bit of Adam's Apple...I wonder...
Be nice.
Why the gay microphone?
I didn't know microphones had genders...
@@KeeperOfTheGoats well, now ya do.
@@KeeperOfTheGoats The dick is just trying to be funny and showing his ignorance. It's actually a VERY expensive state of the art mic. And if any of you remember when it broke or I should say, was having problems, Gene even stated that he was afraid that he wouldn't get another like it, because it was so expensive and rare. Then when he got it back he was kissing and hugging it. It is pretty much his trade mark.
