Find out what ___________ Anderson is filled in with! Mel Tillis, Brett Somers, Charles Nelson Reilly, Bonnie Franklin, Richard Dawson, and Fannie Flagg
Lynn Anderson sang that song, "Rose Garden". " I beg your pardon, I never promised you a Rose Garden " great song. I'm sure was a hit. Of course Mel Tillis knew who she was. 😊
Wow, I can't believe Phyllis was old enough to have a college age son. A bottle of geritol is a good answer, but when I think of cheap ripple wine comes to mind immediately
H/H match update: ... Today's action: A new champion wins an easy game and the right to play his first Super-Match. Today's audience match question: " ________ Anderson" (My thoughts: Bill Anderson comes to mind as he is a MG alum. I suppose someone will say Hans Christian, even though the spelling is different from the question here. I don't have a third choice.) The celebs: Richard (Hans Christian), Fannie (Bill), Brett (Marian) The choice: Hans Christian The answers: Lynn, Hans Christian, Jack MG trivia: Bill Anderson appeared on the panel in episodes 676-680. Coincidentally, both Bonnie and Fannie were on the show that same week! (Also note: It's Hans Christian Andersen, not "Anderson." Spelling doesn't count on Match Game, but it doesn't hurt to point out the correct spellings of people's names, just for the record.) Well, when we have a new champion, I always hope we might have a new celebrity chosen to play the H/H match. But I have a feeling it's going to be Richard again. Yes, it's Richard again. This is the eleventh consecutive time he's been chosen for the H/H, and he's matched three of those questions so far. Looking back a bit further, he's matched 10 of his last 30 attempts (33.3%) and 27 of his 73 most recent attempts (37.0%). His overall accuracy rate stands at 40.9%. This will be his 551st attempt overall. Today's H/H question: "_______ Yankee" (Another one that sounds easy to me. "Damn Yankee.") Richard quickly writes his answer, looks over at Fannie, and files his card. Our champion comes up with "New York." I guess I didn't think of teams because they are referred to in the plural ("New York Yankees"), but an individual player could certainly be called a New York Yankee. I don't know. It's a valid answer and he may well may match Richard, but my mind still wants to go in a different direction. The audience sounded a bit mixed, but gave a generally positive response. Alright, let's see what the reigning head-to-head king has to say... Richard surprises me with "Connecticut" as in "A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court," the 1889 Mark Twain novel. That never occurred to me. It's a valid answer, but seems like a bit of stretch to think a contestant would think of that. (Despite what Gene and the panel seem to say as they discuss the question, "Damn Yankee" (singular) is a common phrase. I just found it in two different dictionaries. I also see that Fannie had written "Dam" on her card, so I would have matched her, and since she represents the South on the panel, that's enough proof that it's a valid expression.) No match today. Here's our updated leader board showing the 11 celebs with at least 3 H/H matches, ranked by accuracy: (Note: An asterisk before a celebrity's name signifies that she has "retired" from the show and her H/H stats are now complete.) (Note: For tied scores, I consider the one with the greater number of matches to be higher; if the matches are equal, the celeb who first achieved that score goes on top.) Orson Bean - 100% (4 wins in 4 attempts). TIE: (*)Jo Anne Worley - 75% (3 wins in 4 attempts). TIE: Joyce Bulifant - 75% (3 wins in 4 attempts). Gary Burghoff - 71.4% (5 wins in 7 attempts). Charles - 51.6% (33 wins in 64 attempts). TIE: Betty - 50.0% (19 wins in 38 attempts). TIE: Fannie - 50.0% (13 wins in 26 attempts). Jo Ann Pflug - 44.4% (8 wins in 18 attempts). Brett - 41.2% (28 wins in 68 attempts). Richard - 40.8% (225 wins in 551 attempts). Bert Convy - 33.3% (5 wins in 15 attempts). *These stats include every head-to-head match from episode 1 through 883, excluding the lost/missing/damaged episodes: 31, 32, 33, 311, 312, 313, 324, 325, and 645. (As per MatchGameProductions, these episodes "are nowhere to be found and also aren't in the Goodson/Todman Library. Sadly, looks like they are lost forever!") -- Also, note that episode 849 was never produced.
My first two thoughts were Sparky Anderson, manager of the 1976 & 1977 World Series champion Cincinnati Reds and Richard Anderson aka Oscar Goldman of "Six Million Dollar Man" fame.
I can't believe that they didn't all say Bill Anderson. He's been on here a few times. And Big Mouth Brett sat right next to him every time he was on here. Excerpt she's too busy trying to draw attention to her self to care.
Gene's ego and rudeness, geez, correcting a panelist's pronunciation on national television. I'm surprised some of these fellows didn't take a swipe at him, at least after the taping. Mel Tillis, of course, was famously polite and genial.
Mel Tillis is,so adorable and sweet! 🥰

These people should try someone else. I think even Richard gets exhausted from being called on every time.
He loves all the attention & the camera on him.
3:42 You know, Somers actually has a point here, which nobody else seems to grasp or comprehend.

A word for Brett (she's dead, don't mind me), I beg your pardon, Lynn Anderson, sang Rose Garden.
I thought Helen Reddy sang that??
Every single attempt to revive Match Game has failed miserably.
John Lang Even with Charles Nelson Reilly on the 1st attempt to revive.
It could never be good without the Richard, CNR, Brett, and Gene Rayburn team.
@@thebrinksf69 um YA it certainly COULD be without saint Richard (in fact, it WAS)
I thought the Match Game show's from 1990 with Ross Shaffer was good though
You can’t recreate perfection. It only occurs once.
Wow that guy is really handsome
So was Phyllis. I miss her already.
That’s why he was a stewardess.
Aww Phyllis the loveliest guest
No one has commented that Hans Christian is AndersEn?
In Europe we know, it's Andersen. But in english it sounds like Anderson.
All I could think of was Loni Anderson and Richard Dean Anderson. It's too early for RD, and Loni wouldn't hit it big for another year yet.

@@magikp6636 Grow Up!
There is Richard (no middle name) Anderson, who played Oscar Goldman on the 6 Million Dollar Man...
Brett always peeling the marker is sooo annoying. What about ? What about?
Doesn't seem to be Earl behind the boards...the slidings are slower, and Gene doesn't add a name when he calls out "Slide it!"
Ok now, what in the WORLD did Lady Godiva have to do that question
Nothing, she died long before this aired.
Hardly anyone would mistake Ugly Edna for an animal but a SCARECROW would seem possible.
Yankee would have been good if it was “New York _____” since singular/plural matches would be accepted in the head to head.
Mary was an attractive grandma.
I would have said, "bottle of Geritol"!
Gene's ego and rudeness, geez, correcting a panelist's pronunciation on national television. I'm surprised some of these fellows didn't take a swipe at him, at least after the taping. Mel Tillis, of course, was famously polite and genial.
I'm surprised no one snapped at him!
WOW....I just watched him give Bonnie Franklin a huge wack on the shoulder for pretending to sleep while he spoke. She didn't seem to mind.
He often played taskmaster, usually to comedic effect but also to keep the show moving. Gene could become pedantic at times.
Gene did not have a eog & he was not rude, he was a greatvhost for this show
I think the show’s success gradually went to Gene’s head. He didn’t have these moments of being such a knob in earlier years.
GUANO to put on the "bat" woulda been funny.
