H/H match update and preview of the week ahead: ... Here we are kicking off week 189 of our favorite classic game show (the final week is number 291). These episodes were taped on March 19, 1977, originally airing in early to mid-April. Another great week with a panel of old friends and familiar faces! This time our stalwart regulars are joined by: ~~~Semi-regular Joyce Bulifant hanging around for a second week in a row (her 27th week of 48 now). She's been tied at a 75% accuracy with Jo Anne Worley for eons. Since Jo Anne has "retired" from MG, it's up to Joyce to break the tie. But first, someone has to choose her! Since she's matched 3 out of 4 times, she seems like a reasonable person to bet on! ~~~Dick Martin is back for his sixth week (of 22). He most recently visited earlier in 1977 (episodes 896-900) and hasn't yet been tapped to answer a head-to-head question. ~~~Last but not least, Debralee Scott returns for her third week (of 10 total). Like so many other MG celebrities the past couple of years, Debralee hasn't had a shot at the H/H yet. Indeed, King Richard extended his reign yet another week last time, playing five out of six questions. Reviewing the past 44 weeks, Richard has played 186 times. Everyone else combined played 34 times. (Charles had 13 opportunities, Brett 10, Fannie 6, Betty 3, Lynn Deerfield 1, and Gary Burghoff 1.) Percentage-wise, Richard has answered an astounding 84.5% of all the H/H questions these past 44 weeks. At a bare minimum, I'd like to see at least one other celeb chosen for the H/H each week. Richard is good at the H/H, but several other panelists are even better (based on the percentage of times they have actually matched contestants in the past). And, frankly, it just gets boring seeing him play every single time. At any rate, I plan to enjoy another visit to the wonderful world of Match Game '77 this week! ~~~Today's action: Our champ needs to match Charles and Debralee to achieve a tie. Luckily, the question sounds like a "gimme" to me with the obvious answer being "bra." Will the contestant and both of the panelists think of it? The champion says "bra," but Charles thought of shoe, dashing our champion's hopes for a third shot at the big money (which she missed out on her first two tries). Debralee had written "bra" for what it's worth... Our defeated champion departs with an IOU for $950... Today's audience match question: "Pig in a ________ " (My thoughts: Poke, Blanket, Pen) The celebs: Brett (Poke), Richard (Blanket), Dick (Sty) The choice: Blanket The answers: Pen, Poke, Blanket (I did better than the celebs today.) It's time for our new champion to choose her head-to-head partner. I imagine it'll be Richard, but I suppose there's a remote possibility she might choose Brett... It's Richard. This is his second consecutive play and now he's been chosen 72 of the past 75 times. (Charles answered the remaining three questions.) Richard has matched 55 of his 127 most recent attempts (43.3%), 38 of his last 84 attempts (45.2%), and 18 of his last 34 attempts (52.9%). His overall success rate is 41.9% and this is his 605th attempt overall. For the sake of comparison: Charles has matched 33 of his 66 attempts (50.0%), Joyce has matched 3 of her 4 attempts (75.0%), and Brett has matched 28 of her 68 attempts (41.2%).} Today's H/H question: "Cook _______ " (My first thought was "Huh?" Honestly, nothing is coming to mind. I paused the video right after Richard's puzzled reaction. I guess I'm having a brain freeze. Cook your goose? Cook out? It sounds lame, but a "cook out" is the best I can do.) Our new champion seems to be doing better than me. She looks decided already, gently nodding. After a brief glance at Joyce, Richard is writing his answer which looks longer than mine. I'm curious to see what it is that I didn't think of. The champion says "Book." Duh! That's got to be it, right? The audience sure seems to think so. Thank goodness I wasn't playing this one for real! The look on Richard's face tells me we've got a match today! Ha! He mentioned my (lame) answer, but luckily wrote the much better answer that the contestant gave! "Book" Richard scores his 254th H/H match today. ~~~Here's our updated leader board showing the 11 celebs with at least 3 H/H matches, ranked by accuracy: (Note: An asterisk before a celebrity's name signifies that she has "retired" from the show and her H/H stats are now complete.) (Note: For tied scores, I consider the one with the greater number of matches to be higher; if the matches are equal, the celeb who first achieved that score goes on top.) Orson Bean - 100% (4 wins in 4 attempts). TIE: (*)Jo Anne Worley - 75% (3 wins in 4 attempts). TIE: Joyce Bulifant - 75% (3 wins in 4 attempts). Gary Burghoff - 71.4% (5 wins in 7 attempts). TIE: Charles - 50.0% (33 wins in 66 attempts). TIE: Betty - 50.0% (19 wins in 38 attempts). TIE: Fannie - 50.0% (13 wins in 26 attempts). Jo Ann Pflug - 44.4% (8 wins in 18 attempts). Richard - 42.0% (254 wins in 605 attempts). Brett - 41.2% (28 wins in 68 attempts). Bert Convy - 33.3% (5 wins in 15 attempts). *These stats include every head-to-head match from episode 1 through 941, excluding the lost/missing/damaged episodes: 31, 32, 33, 311, 312, 313, 324, 325, 645, and 910. (As per MatchGameProductions, these episodes "are nowhere to be found and also aren't in the Goodson/Todman Library. Sadly, looks like they are lost forever!") -- Also, note that episode 849 was never produced.
If the celebs are in Equity, they are probably getting scale, which at the time was probably at least $500 per show at the time. Wild guess on my part.

Thanks for continuing to post these! I look up the Wikipedia entries on those stars I don't remember. Very sad to read about Debralee Scott's death.
Yes it was indeed tragic. Yet more fallout from the horrible events of 911
Rich Orloff went on to become a very well respected playwright!
He can be contacted thru his website...we should request him to finally write that Match Game question and post it here.
We've been waiting 40 years for that question!
Yes he did. I just looked him up .
According to his bio he is, "one of the most popular unknown playwrights in the country"
Dick Martin actually matched someone!!!
Yes he has so much money, he took a job working on the Match Game.

@Eddie Afterburner, thanks, interesting to know!
I remember the time when Joyce Bulifont wrote "puke" for an answer on a card. She cracked up laughing, and so did I !😂
Several episodes back, Someone was asking about that episode. Why was that so funny?

on the match game guide were the guests star for the week they had Betty White listed. Not Joyce
