These microlongrange drones have been exploding in popularity recently, and for good reason, but I think there are some things that are worth considering before you take the leap.
Do you need 30min fly time? Do you need freestyle performance? What camera are you running? Will this be an addition, or your only quad? What's your goggle setup? Do you really need GPS?

FINALLY! Somebody looked at the analog version! Thank you so much for your budget-minded approach!
NOBODY has looked at the analog version. It's the one I'm interested in because I'm already invested in the analog ecosystem, and can't *afford* to drop $600 to replace perfectly working equipment. Plus it looks like it's just that little bit lighter, so is easier to keep under 250g.
I might grab one and put a Runcam Split Nano in there so I can get HD while keeping sub250g with an 850mAh.
The Runcam is only 10.5g, indicating a weight savings against the Insta360, and also gives you recording feedback on OSD via a little red circle in the corner of your screen.
I'd have to see if they fixed the big red "SD FAULT" warning from the first generation models when the memory card fills up.
I don't know if they have the ability to tie it to one of your Aux channels, or use "SmartAudio" that all the rich kids are talking about these days. I think it does. So you can bind "Record" to one of your switches on your remote.
Although the Explorer LR's FC seems to be a bit short on available aux pads.
Speaking of budget, for goggles, consider the Eachine EV200D. A diversity MONSTER with what I affectionately call "Diversity Diversity" - TWIN modules, both with diversity in them.
Other YTers have reviewed it by plastering it with patch antennas, and then a little omni for the remaining blind spots. It's comparatively affordable too.
Still expensive, but not nearly as wallet-shattering as a DJI.
I was probably going to grab a NBD 3" micro for bashing around, since my old 5" is, well, old, and I'd like to keep under 250g if I can as I gradually get myself back into the FPV hobby.

Thanks, I'm glad you enjoyed the review and I really glad that it was of value, makes the effort worthwhile! I certainly liked this little quad, I was sad when it eventually, and inevitably, landed up at the bottom of a lake.
I'm a bit dubious about the split cameras since it really locks your HD cam into the quad, but the new Runcam Thumb is an intriguing option for the tight budget, I haven't tried it myself yet, but it is interesting, especially since it _seems_ like it could be possible to use with gyroflow. I replaced my Insta360go (that landed in the lake too) with the Caddx Peanut and have gotten much better results out of it due to the ND16 filter.
Nowadays I'm mostly flying digital, but I haven't found a suitable replacement for the 2.5/3" 80g 2s builds that were my everyday flyers (Savage Bee and my own similar builds based around the NBD BBBLv3 with 8000kv 1202 Flow motors and Avan Rush 2.5" props), if you are flying analog it is really really hard to beat the fun to price ratio of those quads. So easy to find a spot to fly!

Hi Jason. Nice to. See a "local" review on this drone. Just came across your channel. Subbed and liked. I received my LR4 explorer 3 days ago. It feels great and the gps does give me some confidence, like you mentioned. I am Waiting for my caddx peanut 3d print.to make some videos. Your low flying style loos great.. Will try it out.

Hi Riaan, thanks for the kind words! Always good to find locals who fly, its a pretty small community here still.
I see you must have gotten your VTX issue sorted out, I presume it was to do with the locked mode they arrive in.
Enjoy the quad, it pairs well with the peanut and should be a lot of fun!

nice review, I got also the analog version, after the vtx and fc blew and the replacement blew too i invested in Dji, I do love the way of flying than bashing..

Interesting, this has been the quad that convinced me I need to try and get on the digital band wagon in 2021. I guess it's because you spend more time actually looking at things.
My VTX is dead too now, but it was due to a crash that drove the antenna tube into the board, ripping off a few components. Flywoo's support was pretty good though and sent me the component values so I just need to source them hopefully get it running again.

Great review, thanks. Since I have to comply with the 250g rule, could you please tell me the weight with the Insta360 mounted (w/o LiPo battery). Thanks.

Thanks. Glad you liked the review!
Sorry about the slow reply, had to dig out my scale. All these numbers are without a VTX antenna since I broken mine and haven't replaced it yet.
      Quad is roughly 140g, i360go 19g.
      With 650 and 850mah 4s it was 217 and 257g respectively.
Don't have a tpu mount for the i360go on there anymore either, so add maybe 10g for it.

@@JasonSuterOssum Thanks Jason, this was exactly what I needed because I like to go for the same setup (analog vtx, i360 go, 650mAh) and wanted to determine if I can stay below 250g before ordering the parts.

Nice vid Jason, would you choose this over the HEX version ?

    • @JasonSuterOssum
      @JasonSuterOssum  2 роки тому +1

Thanks Peter, I guess it all depends on your application. I haven't flown the hex myself yet.
This quad is fun for for efficient cruising for sure, but you give up a lot of performance and ruggedness for that.
If you think you will want to freestyle with it then there are better options.
If you want to long range with it, then bigger is probably better.
However, if the 250g limit is an issue where you live then maybe this quad fits the bill perfectly.
I have recently built a 5" 6S whirligig v2, 2004 1750kv motors, and it has waaaay more power while still have very decent flight times if just cruising (7min-ish on a 720mah 6s). For my use-case I really am not interested in longer flights than that.
All of that said, this quad was one of my most enjoyable (until I crashed in a lake), it opened me up to a different style of flying, there is a lot of joy in just cruising around and excitement to be had in pushing the distance a bit further each time.
