    This story really added another dimension to the importance of meditation. I have at times forgotten about the treasure of these teachings because I haven`t heard about such incredible people risking their lives in order to spread the wisdom of compassion and love. It is difficult to really understand it`s magnitude because we are so busy with our minds that we aren`t able to grasp how developing a mental calmness feels like. Thank you to everyone spreading these beautiful teachings.

    Meditation came from Hinduism india.The oldest documented images of meditation are from India and date back to 5000 to 3500 BCE. Wall art paintings depict people sitting in meditative-like seated postures with their eyes half closed, presumed to be deep in meditation

      Well the oldest evidence for medicine does not come from India The oldest evidence for meditation dates back to the Neolithic period, around 5,000 to 7,000 BCE. Archeologists have found evidence of meditative practices in artifacts found at the Çatalhöyük site in Turkey, where drawings of people meditating in what appears to be a trance-like state were discovered. Other artifacts from this time period, such as cave paintings and sculptures, also show evidence of meditation techniques, such as breath control, visualization, and chanting. These findings suggest that meditation has been part of human practice for a very long time, and is rooted in ancient spiritual traditions.

      @@perfection9630 Turkey Predates Indian sources if you an do math. Cave paintings dating back tens of thousands of years, such as those found in the Lascaux caves in France, depict humans in what could be interpreted as meditative or trance-like states during rituals. Cuneiform tablets from ancient Mesopotamia (around 4000~5500 BCE) mention practices such as prayer and rituals that involve stillness and focus, which could be interpreted as early forms of meditation. The "Instructions of Ptahhotep," an ancient Egyptian text dated to around 2400 BCE, contains advice on self-reflection and the cultivation of inner peace, which are akin to meditative practices. It wasn't only influenced by India but by many cultures.

    I feel something similar to what Andy says in minute 11:15, but not sure I understand what he had done to overcome it or uncover.
    I'll quote that part of the video: "but there was still some sort of something kind of missing, for me that was it was a warmth, lightness, playfulness, it was... Just a sense of... I don't know wether I describe it as joy, love or compassion. There are a lot of different kind of words there, I know, but it was something that I felt I haven't kind of uncovered, unlocked or discovered within my own mind. And I met dalai lama"
    And then, the story doesn't really come back to how he discover that or what did he do. He continues on other stuff (overwhelmed by dalai lama and what fascinated him was what people had gone by to extend this learnings).
    Am I missing something? I'd really love to know what Andy's answer is to how he uncovered or discovered within his own mind that sense of joy or love or compassion that was missing

    Andy´s app creation opened a meditated debate inside my mind...he went on this epic pilgrimage and meditated in the most uncanny monasteries in the world devoting himself to it, and although you might consider that "healed" him in one way or the other, the truth is he went back to the 1st world to create a product that he could sell to as many clients as possible. To me this either means that his meditation failed and he is just passing on teachings that didn´t really fully worked for him or he just found in his own "nirvana" that the captitalistic system we live by in the developed world is actually the best suited ecosystem for human beings to "keep going"....I am yet to decide whether his meditation succeed or fail. It has clearly succeeded according to the capitalism metrics though.

    "These teachings have come from somewhere else, there are not mine, and all I'm doing is kind of sharing it with you" - Sure Andy, all you are doing is sharing it... while making an obscene amount of money with your company headspace, which successfully packaged the age old practice of meditation as yet another product for bored western consumers during late capitalism. Bravo, it's great comedy for sure! Extra brownie points for the choice of music in your PR videos (cause nothing says "mindfulness" quite like upbeat trendy electronic dance music...) and sneaking in your political opinions about Tibet (of course, "mindfully" presented as objective facts)

    • @BoomiestBomb
      @BoomiestBomb 4 роки тому +10

      They're doing good things with that money though. Their advertisements are universally loved. There are so many people more open to meditation than there were before Headspace rolled along. Just recently our company began offering us free subscriptions to Headspace. By generating revenue, they've been able to further popularize the act of meditation and spread it far and wide. If you don't have a marketing budget, it's hard to get a message out. Especially on something as abstract and weird as meditating. Weirdly enough, meditation became big as soon as people started selling it. If you can sell something, you can market it. Business can do good.
      Also on the Tibet point: what he was trying to hammer home was the dedication these monks had to Buddhist wisdom and mindfulness. They embarked on a perilous journey and faced many desperate times and made many desperate measures just to spread this knowledge. That's inspiring. It's a testament to how truly precious this knowledge is.
