Eli Roth's Borderlands is not a good movie! Even with actors like Kevin Hart, Cate Blanchett and Jamie Lee Curtis, it feels embarrassingly cheap. So where did Borderlands go wrong? In this video, I try to get into it.

It's the sort of video game movie we all hoped Hollywood had finally moved past.
Eli Roth honestly has the weirdest filmography at this point. Like, Robert Rodriguez level.
The gap between their amazing work and their cringe work is wider than the fkn Grand Canyon
Ha ha ha ha ha you expect old fuddy-duddy boomers who think they are better than the gaming industry to actually stop doing crap like this? Ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha you're funny
Unfortunately they probably won't stop making bad movies based on video games especially if they can't capture the reason why the game works to begin with
@@frederickshaibani5655That's the point where I usually start wondering about how much the rest of the production team was contributing. Many an editor has saved a movie, after all.
Its kinda weird, did the makers of the Borderlands movie watch Fallout? If they did they had to know their movie was going to crash and burn. Why not cancel and claim it as a tax write off, or try to sell it to a streaming service?
Very ironic that they turn the Borderlands series which is famously known for its M-rating into a PG-13 movie thinking that it would earn them more money while an R-rated movie just made a billion dollars in 3 weeks.
THIS. This comment. You’re dead on 🤷♂️😂

Also, odd choice to aim the movie at kids who legally can't buy any of the games without adult supervision. Also, the vast majority of the fanbase is probably (close to) adult since the first game came out well over a decade ago.
It's probably what got cut, I bet it was R rated and the studio cut it to make it PG-13 which ruined it.
Honestly, an R rating wouldn’t have saved this. They should have spared the brand and wrote this off like WB
Somehow... the video game movie curse returned.

Hollywood just never learns anything
I don't play Borderlands, but my friend does. I asked him if Kevin Hart would've been a better fit for Claptrap than Roland, and after thinking for a few seconds, he said, "...Yeah, actually."
That was my thought too. Though i think Black mostly worked as Claptrap. Or at the very least, i laughed the most at his jokes.
Yeah I thought Roland would have been way taller, not 5'1"
Thinking more about it, Kevin Hart would be better as Claptrap cause he's got that annoying sidekick character down to a T. Combine that with his ability and timing to rib on people, Hart would actually be a better Claptrap.
Kevin as claptrap and The Rock as Roland. The better movie that never was. lol
All of the characters were miscasts. Why pay huge money for any Hollywood actor when they could have got the original Claptrap voice actor, David Eddings, for a fraction of the cost? Lilith and Roland were just... Wrong. In playing it safe they failed. They should have done what Telltale did with Tales from the Borderlands. Used the setting but make the protagonists new and original characters with maybe a few main characters from the game as side characters.
Randy Pitchford defending the twist that Lilith, the most popular siren from the series that has been known about since before the release of Borderlands 1, was in fact that siren in the movie is probably my favorite post-release meltdown I've seen.
"But in movie, makes sense 'cause nobody ain't played the game" - that guy is stupid af, also claiming during his meltdown that Borderlands was "made by him and his friends".
The guy is not the creative director of the series, BL has seen an atrocious downgrade from 2 to 3 and several devs had to be cut down since magic Randy is one hack of a business man, fumbling Colonial Marines as badly as he did.
the fact people still give him money is crasy
bro this is like saying that uncle Ben dies on a Spider-man movie is the most unexpected thing possible
Of course *Randy Pitchford* would defend it.
@@benoitbrown9400Is it the same? I thought that was more of like a “oh shit it’s happening” moment and less of a twist.
One of the best things about the borderlands games was it's self-aware, 'wacky' humor, and I really don't think it's specific brand could work in any other medium. For example, one of my favourite bits in the games is when the antagonist gives you a mission kill yourself by jumping off a cliff. You respawn in the game, so there's not really any reason not to do it, since it gives XP and money, but after you do the antagonist is like "I can't believe you actually did that LMAO, you loser". Handsome Jack heckling you throughout your efforts is essential to the experience! Also Tiny Tina just doesn't work without swearing!
She does swear in the movie.

@@Zombiesnyder13Agreed
The single image that sums up how little effort was put into the Borderlands movie is the picture of the professional actress of Hollywood in an outfit that is vastly outdone by random cosplayers.
I read that Craig Mazin (writer and producer of Chernobyl and The last of us) was the original writer but the director wanted to impose his vision, and re-wrote everything so much that he left in 2023 and didnt want his name in the movie
Eli Roth finished this film in 2022, Tim Miller did extensive reshoots because the studio didn't like that it was Rated R and that's probably when Craig stepped out
@@GabeGarsia Nope, Craig Mazin stepped out because of Roth's changes to the script.
This is why it is sometimes a bad thing for movies to have their director and writer be different people. On a good day, I can accept when the director and writer are different people who at least agree on the same story vision, but Borderlands is a bad day when they can not agree on the same story. That sort of creative disagreement caused Superman Lives to be canceled before it even started filming! Plus, the rewrites added lots of new ideas and gimmicks that would have been more expensive to film.
It was all in the can by 2020 or something. I think they have been desperately trying to fix it in the edit since.
@@Elcho0S Well if you said nope, since we all know renowned movie trivia source Elcho0S, we'll all just believe *your* unsubstantiated claims and not _aaaaanyone_ else's
I think the first problem was just going for names when casting and not going for people that actually fit the characters and the vibe of the thing they are supposed to be in
I would've casted Millie Bobbie Brown, Sarah Snook, and Sydney Sweeney. They would've been perfect.
I thought jack black as claptrap was gonna be the worst part of this movie, but after seeing it, Jamie lee Curtis turned out to be so much worse. It’s kind of insane how awful she was in the role
every time i see her on the cover i think "oh so she's like a corporate military general yeah ?" and then I remember that she's supposed to be Tannis ???
Same! I actually didn't mind Claptrap because he was the only one that was at least into it.
All these actors and actress are good on their own respective movies. This is not just bad casting, but bad at everything
Didnt even realise she was meant to be TANNIS from the trailers, this casting is so weird
I'll give Jamie credit for coming off as extremly bad in conversations just like Tannis who gets so invested in her work she seemingly forgets how to talk to humans. That's everything positive I'm going to say though
By far the funniest thing to come out of this film isn't a scene from the film itself, but the absolute s-tier unhinged meltdown Randy Pitchford is having on twitter YET AGAIN. Lmfao 😂
Simply put, the film came out ten years too late. And it was destined to fail as soon as they cast Kevin Hart as Roland.
Definetly.
and yet, people seem to nearly unanimously agree he was the least worst part?
@@somerandolad Hart as Roland was the least of the problems. He put in a passable imitation of cocky BL1-era Roland, even though he's a little short for a stormtrooper. The casting didn't kill it. The formulaic, generic script killed it.
I've liked Hart in some roles, but... Why, oh why, would you cast him as a character who's supposed to be the strong, reliable, conscientious, straight-man type?
Its basically like eli roth (or whoever did the casting) saw the games had comedy and there was a black guy in it and was like "comedy? Black guy? I KNOW JUST WHO TO CALL"

Borderlands has such a colorful cartoony aesthetic with hard lines and shadows, imagine if they made this movie to look like spider verse or arcane. I realize this movie probably has bigger problems story wise but I still think its a baffling decision not to make this animated
Someone on Letterboxd said this about the movie, and I'm paraphrasing, cause I don't remember the exact words:
"Watching this movie is like wanting to throw up but before you can do that, you die from cancer."
Thats a good one
Wow.
The moment Kevin Hart is cast in a movie, I know it ain't for me
Same
Honestly same. Like no hate to Kevin Hart. I really enjoy his comedy and a ton of his other work. But when he's cast in blockbuster it's just such an obvious "we need an A list celeb to get butts in seats" move.
Has he been in a single movie that's more than a 7/10 at best?
*casted?
He's just not funny, not even close. In fact, he turns me off of most movies.
Why they casted Kevin Hart instead of Terry Crews for Roland and all three female characters are all played by old women when their characters in game are in their late 20's or early 30's baffles me
Good call on terry crews. I would've loved to see that
Comes down to randy Pitchford. This movie was announced ten years ago and most of the cast are a-listers who make sense in the context that Randy has wanted to make a name in Hollywood. Jack Black being Claptrap was something that Randy went out of his way for and well, explains most barring Krieg and Tina. That and same goes for the story, Randy is the owner of Gearbox and the bulk of the funding and the IP fall under him. Doesn't help that one of the producers is the man behind the solo Spider-Man solo villain flicks. Craig Mazin had also wrote a very different version, before Eli Roth was brought on and rewrote the script, than was shelved as it was ready to go out in 2021, but got reshoots with Tim Miller before it's release now.
This movie even existing in any capacity is surprising.
I don't even think Kevin Hart is all that funny. He's just a short guy who talks fast. I think Terry Crews is actually funny.
Eli Roth loves GILFs. That's why they're cast
Casting choices aside, JLC's interests tend to line up with the average nerd (of her generation), so she shows up in these sorts of projects. If they ever offered her something Warcraft, she'd be there.
Oh dear. So many trains are getting wrecked lately.
Eli Roth is not provocative. Maïmouna Doucouré is provocative. Emerald Fennel is provocative. Eli Roth is an edge lord. He always has been. He (like Zach Snyder) became a famous director when it was cool to be an edge lord, now it only highlights their stunted growth as creators.
I'd take Eli Roth over Zack Snyder at any time. At least Roth knows how to make descent movies as of recent...
using the word "provocative" to describe the director of the movie "Cuties", a movie that is about glorifying prepubescent girls performing sexual dances for 90minutes under the false pretense of criticism, is not the best choice of words. Id lean more towards "creep", well actually i just wouldnt bring her up. Especially not as a measuring stick of any kind. Absolutely disgusting to mention Emerald in the same breath too. Her actual meaningful work does not deserve to be despoiled with comparrisons to Prince Andrews favourite dircetor.
I too enjoy a little edge and yeah I think you hit the nail on the head
Why is Roth so attached to this movie. He was barely involved in the writing and a lot of his directing was reshot. Plus the fact that it is PG-13 should show it isn't his typical style
@@TheParkerThirteenthe USA had two pedophiles running for president, this is normal
Mordecai and Brick weren't there. Steele was nowhere to be found and The Destroyer... Actually that boss sucked, they could keep him out. But regardless this felt like a cheap imitation despite having Gearbox on board!

In hindsight, Randy had his own impression of what parts of the games he wanted present, cause he considers them good or important.
@@BigBossBernie The only way he could have made this worse is if he put in the villains from Borderlands 3!
Gearbox and cheap imitations have certainly never gone together before!!
Also the weird thing of treating Kreig like... like Tina's pet?? Like I get that Kreig is often used as some comedic relief in-universe, but it feels pretty damn uncomfortable how he's treated like some kind of circus animal Tina has when his entire backstory is about how he was tortured and experimented on to the point where he lost his mind and his memories. Just rubs me the wrong way.
Well put together, it is 100% a Syfy movie, but with a bigger budget
Yeah that really nailed what is visually off putting about the movie (aside from the color palette which is fine).
Lol, that editor's note 8:55

The "something was there but it was gone" feeling maybe came from the original screenwriter Craig Mazin. It was then rewritten by Roth, and Mazin didn't want anything with the movie anymore and asked he's only credited with an alias.
Can we be grateful Detective Pikachu, the Sonic Movies, & the Mario Movie were created by actual fans who love and respected their original source materials.
Some of Blanchetts co-stars said she was practicing for other movies while on set for borderlands and I can't blame her. No amount of effort from the actors could have saved this movie.
Feels like the earlier Uwe Boll adaptations.
The movie gives a strong impression of the script having gone under the editing equivalent of a game of "telephone". Someone wrote a script that might have been at least somewhat reminiscent of the actual games, and then it sat around for a while and someone unfamiliar with the games picked up the script and said, "hey, this gives me a few 'great' ideas", and they then proceed to rearrange and replace sections of the script, veering always closer to well-known industry-standard tropes. Rinse/repeat this a half dozen times. That's what the script feels like - more like a generic low-budget B-grade sci-fi movie, with Borderlands Easter eggs glued onto it.
Related, there are rumors that the original cut was *much* bloodier (as are the games), and... seemingly the studio reacted in horror and demanded it be dialed back. I think they wanted a PG-13 Marvel movie with Marvel levels of ticket sales.

-During the Marcus scene selling guns you can visually see the subtext "Digi-Clone" which is a ability for Zane from BL3 who is not only not in the movie but also means the SFX designers probably just lifted a screenshot of the gun from the game (where the player is playing as Zane to see that text, other characters wont see it) instead of just making the visual effect properly

That's why most of the recent adaptations, like "Sonic The Hedgehog", "The Last of Us ", "Dungeons and Dragons" and "Arcane" worked
Because the people behind it understood the games, and understood filmmaking

This is an insane thing to say, in what world is ambition all it takes to make a movie work? There have been tons of very ambitious films that turned out terribly
@@schmiddi5768 But there are projects where the people behind it try to make it work, and those that don't even try it

Games adaptations aren't "cursed". You might have to think outside the box when you take into account that you're adapting something from a different medium. Which is why instead of recreating the exact story taken from the source material, many directors choose to tell a story using the setting of the game. Maybe compelling lore mentioned in the material prior.
Games are paced and strucutred differently from a movie. They tend to be twice as long as a film's average runspan at minimum. It's hard to fit all that in 2-3 hours worth of footage. This is why shows are an appealing alternative for an adaptation, the run-time is longer and they have more clearly defined "chapters" that can let the audience gather info at a controlled pace without feeling overstuffed.
We've seen this angle with shows like Castlevania and Cyberpunk Edgerunners. I know these are animated projects, but the thought-process is the same.

Borderlands was the first movie I knew would suck based solely on the cast. The producers clearly wanted name recognition to try and draw in a larger audience, not because those actors fit the roles.
Instead of making this movie for actual fans of the franchise, they tried to make it for (what they perceived to be) the larger audience of non-fans. That's what went wrong.
Stop making this a "fans vs non fans" thing.
Even if the movie did all the things fans wanted, it still was mired in so much shit it wouldn't have salvaged it.
I have heard that the director actually made it more bloody and more like the video game, and studio execs lost their s---. They then made all sorts of cuts and reshots. I am not sure how much of that is true, but it would not surprise me at all.
The question is...What went right?
@@Mattikron Claptrap's _appearance_ (not voice) is pretty much spot on. For me, perhaps the biggest "wait, what?" moment was when they said they had to go through "Caustic Caverns" to get to where they were going - in the games, this is a cool, huge, underground map. In the movie, Caustic Caverns was... a standard sewer pipe. Oh, but it has glowy green slime in it, so that totally redeems the courageous location choice (/s).
Such a trainwreck that this is literally the first time I've even heard of it lol
Borderlands is a game series that, I think, is mostly entertaining due to it's gameplay - 'Get Gun, Shoot Gun, Get Loot, Repeat'. So it's not at all surprising that a film of the series would fail to get people to go and see it.
Handsome Jack was lightning in a bottle. He's awesome.
The setting can be interesting. There is potential for some interesting stories there, I think.
Exactly. Stripped of the gameplay it's just a hollow patchwork of gaming memes
All the budget went into the "A-list" actors/actresses.
A bad director made a bad movie.
I can't stand Kevin Hart. Fall Out and Last of Us make this movie look even worse.
Whoever cast this movie clearly had a gilf kink and it made the ads and posters actively unappealing to a mass market.
Clearly, nobody with decision making power had enough commercial sense to force them to cast a few young and conventionally attractive actresses to appeal to mass audiences. It's unsurprising that nobody with power had a clue of what to do with the story or how to save it with the reshoots. The best decision anybody made with this film was to kill the marketing spend to limit their losses.
I just started playing Borderlands 2 and omg this game is fun. Dunno anything about the series though. Also my character taking second wind and being like " I am not dead yet".
2 is the best in the series. 3 does improve gameplay but the writing takes a nose dive to the point I can't play it without muting all the dialogue.
Glad you're having fun with it. The pre-sequel is really good too, I'm having a lot of fun with the Lawbringer class and spamming pistols.
4:14 you know, I never stopped to reflect on that.
Nope it's a catastrophic mess😅
It wasn't really a twist that Lilith was the Firehawk, it was a relief that they didn't just make her a regular person for the whole thing.
All I can remember was a prerelease clip of Eli Roth excitedly talking about the violence and action scenes, and Randy Pitchford basically shushing him and saying it's a faaamily film.
So I think the blame lies less on Roth with this one...
HA, hit all the buttons and bells and sh**, awesome, great video, thanks man!
They just had to make Fury Road but more raunchy. It's that ez
"Just recreate the best action movie in the last 20 years". Ezy
A bunch of hacks remaking George Miller's magnum opus and possibly the best action film of the past 15 years? Yes, EZ. Sure. 🙃
From what I've seen from interview clips, the people who made the movie did in fact know the source material, but wanted to deliberately go in another direction. May they all stub their toes constantly for the next 10 years.
*Our God indeed is a covenant keeping God. Has he said a thing and not perform it? I watch how things unfold in my life, from penury to $356,000 every three months and I can only praise him and trust him more. Hallelujah 🙌🏻🙌🏻🙌🏻*

People need to know
Are you going to talk about *Batman: Cape Crusader* ? It's been out a week ago.
The editor's note says all I was going to.
6:10 Tar was made AFTER this movie. Captainmidnight should have researched this point better.
He never claims that one was made before the other.
@@gowzahr Yes he did. I added the timestamp so i wouldn't get the comment you just made.🤷
The editors note killed me😂
I like “Vagrant Queen” and “Killjoys,” so I think you just unintentionally sold this movie on me. 😂
