If you think about it, Misa was indirectly killed by Rem. If she never gave Misa the second death note she probably would’ve lived a long and happy life and likely would’ve never found out who Light was or that he was Kira.
Wouldn't call him a hero, but yeah, the "How-To" volume even makes note of this by referencing Light's proclamation that he would be "an exception": "Light suffered a pathetic end. This line reveals his arrogance."
One thing that I find doesn't get talked about enough is how the show demonstrates when a person's true desires and beliefs are exposed once they're given power. Prior to Light receiving the Deathnote (and also when he lost all memories of it), he had very rational morals and a code of conduct similar to that of his Father's. And yet once he obtained the Deathnote, he completely changed as a person. He no longer held himself to the same way of thinking his Dad had. He saw himself as above everyone else and everyone as either a follower or as an obstacle that needed to be dealt with. It really drives home the absolute control and allure the Deathnote has on its user. How even someone as nearly perfect and lawful as Light could end up corrupted by it. He was so consumed by the book's powers that he couldn't see that he had it MADE. Incredibly smart, set for life career wise due to his near perfect grades as well as his father being in a comfy government position, clean record, blessed with good looks, very popular amongst his peers, no shortage of women that would go out with him in a HEARTBEAT, and a family that loved him unconditionally. And yet he threw all of that away while in this state of constant desire for complete control and absolute power. It wasn't until Light was on Death's door that he snapped out of his mesmerized state and realized that he was no God and that he was just as fragile and expendable as everyone else, but by then it was too late.
I would disagree. I do not believe Light was a good person prior to the Death note. Lawful? Yes. Codes of conduct? Honestly, I think that's what makes this series so good. The fact that people still talk and debate YEARS after it's been out shows the timelessness of the show.

I really like the part at the end where L appears in front of Light as he's dying. Their complex relationship is one of the highlights of the show and the fact we don't exactly know how they're feeling about each other makes it even better, making us ask questions that we'll probably never get the answer to. Why did L appear before Light? Was it Light, desperate for a shimmer of comfort in his dying moments, remembering the one person he considered a true friend? Or was it to symbolize that L, despite dying first, managed to claim victory over Kira? Going further with that train of thought, how did L truly feel about Light when he was still alive? Did L hate Light with a burning passion because he really knew Light was Kira but never managed to prove it? Or did L, despite his suspicions, feel some sort of companionship towards Light? The fact I'm thinking about this so deep is homage to Death Note's writing.

This scene alone pretty much confirms my theory that Light Yagami is Kira. It's subtly hinted at throughout the rest of the show, manga and movies, but this scene alone confirms my suspicion.
I'll admit the way Near won is strage but the scene is still beautiful and perfect and the symolism is incredible Light dying halfway up the stairs is great, in between he's niether in Heaven or Hell

One of the things that I've found funny about Death Note, is something that Ryuk notes fairly early in the series. It's how Light was never truly afraid of Ryuk, nor ever bother to kiss up to Ryuk, despite being a literal form of God. Despite using the Death Note countless times throughout the course of the story, Light was never once truly scared, nor concerned, about Ryuk using the Death Note itself on him, until at the very moment Ryuk decided to do so. (At least in the manga.) This shows that no matter what one goes through in life, humans will always be nothing more than that. Human. And no matter what one goes through, or obtains, in life, it will ultimately be taken away from you the day you die.
Remember, she was an accomplice to Light's crime spree as well as a mass murderer herself. Her real life equivalent would be people like Karla Homolka and the girls who followed Charles Manson.

Had Light made the eye deal with Ryuk in his room he'd have gotten to be God of the new world for atleast 2 and a half years. Instead he lived on for 5 more years and ended up losing it all. :/

Lifespans change in Death Note (e.g. Ryuk laughs bc he sees Naomi’s lifespan change when Light is about to kill her), so we can assume he had a normal lifespan before certain events later in the series sealed his fate. Whether that's a friendship, a story, a job, a course, a marathon, an interaction, a day- Everything comes to a bittersweet end. Often we think back to the past as nostalgic. It seems our human brains often amplify how we felt about everything in the past. If we had a bad experience, our brains will make sure that we remember that experience as one of the worst things ever, and if we had a good day our brains will make sure we remember it as a Really good day. So good, that when we try to replicate it and fail, we feel bad. And that's the same with Death Note. Death Note is a very fantastic story, but unfortunately, it was built to have an ending. And no matter how you look at it, that ending will always be determined the moment Light dies. As important as L is to the story of Death Note, his death never solidified Light's victory. Light's mission wasn't to not be caught by L. It was just to not be caught. No matter what, Light would have to live the rest of his life making sure not to be caught. If not by L, Near, or Mello, he just had to make sure he didn't screw up so bad that some average joe of the street could have exposed him. Light could never let himself be revealed and would have to spend the rest of his life hiding in secret. When L was in the rain, his sound shattering line was: "Tell me Light, from the moment you were born, has there ever been a moment you told the truth?" But really, his line have replaced Light's name for Kira's; No matter what, Kira would have to spend the rest of his existence lying to everyone he knew forever. Kira always lied; Even to his own allies. Whether Light won or lost, the outcome would not be determined until the moment he died. I don't get why people wanted Light to win. If you want Light to win, then stop watching after Episode 25. (Or maybe Episode 26 minus the final 15 Seconds.) We get to see Light win, and then we get to see him lose, so we really get to see both possible endings. While I think a sequel to Death Note (And I mean a full-blown series of volumes sequel) is technically possible, the original story of Death Note sees both of our main characters (and a bunch of others) perish, so it quite frankly can't be the same. (Although I can just imagine some big studio company completely jumping the shark and doing some random time-travel plot of people from the future traveling back in time to try and stop the death of L/Light.) It's honestly sad that Death Note had to end. But it was amazing that it got to have an actual ending, that (at least for me) I found satasfying. Kira had to live his life in a constant chess match against the world. When you have to play a chess game forever, it's only all the more likely that you'll make a few too many bad moves in a row and get yourself checkmated, which is exactly what happened. It only took the world 5 years, but it happened. Death note was never going to have a happy ending

One of the things that I've found funny about Death Note, is something that Ryuk notes fairly early in the series. It's how Light was never truly afraid of Ryuk, nor ever bother to kiss up to Ryuk, despite being a literal form of God. Despite using the Death Note countless times throughout the course of the story, Light was never once truly scared, nor concerned, about Ryuk using the Death Note itself on him, until at the very moment Ryuk decided to do so. (At least in the manga.) This shows that no matter what one goes through in life, humans will always be nothing more than that. Human. And no matter what one goes through, or obtains, in life, it will ultimately be taken away from you the day you die.

I honestly prefer this ending over the one in the manga now I know what you’re all thinking. He was evil but at the beginning, he wasn’t a bad guy. He was just misguided corrupted by the death note but even so I prefer this end because at least he didn’t die alone, he would’ve been a hero had the death note never came along

While he was dying, he saw a vision of L overlooking him just like how light pretty much was overlooking L when he died that’s why I’m saying he didn’t die alone because he had some comfort in the end to pass on peacefully being Watched by a rival Who was his enemy but it turns out to be the only friend that respects him as an equal
So what? Just because he was good before doesn't mean that he should've had any sympathy. Everyone started off good. Even Hitler did. He deserved his manga death. So reluctant to kill others without knowing the consequences or how it would feel, then him dying like a bitch

Had Light made the eye deal with Ryuk in his room he'd have gotten to be God of the new world for atleast 2 and a half years. Instead he lived on for 5 more years and ended up losing it all. :/

@@JK-fc8xp That's the thing. Light was destined to lose and the life span Ryuk sees above Light's head is basically a timer before he, himself, writes Lights name in his DN because Kira gets defeated at his own game.
Lifespans change in Death Note (e.g. Ryuk laughs bc he sees Naomi’s lifespan change when Light is about to kill her), so we can assume he had a normal lifespan before certain events later in the series sealed his fate. Had he made the deal, he would’ve beat L much easier and would’ve likely lived to be middle-aged, unless someone else got close to killing him

I believe he is laughing because he was very entertained at the fact Light was able to manipulate her into giving him her license. Watch the episode again and you'll see right at the moment Light changes her mind through lying, Ryuk laughs at Light's tactics.

I find that perfectly sums up the feeling of something ending. Whether that's a friendship, a story, a job, a course, a marathon, an interaction, a day- Everything comes to a bittersweet end.
Often we think back to the past as nostalgic. It seems our human brains often amplify how we felt about everything in the past. If we had a bad experience, our brains will make sure that we remember that experience as one of the worst things ever, and if we had a good day our brains will make sure we remember it as a Really good day. So good, that when we try to replicate it and fail, we feel bad.
And that's the same with Death Note. Death Note is a very fantastic story, but unfortunately, it was built to have an ending. And no matter how you look at it, that ending will always be determined the moment Light dies.
As important as L is to the story of Death Note, his death never solidified Light's victory. Light's mission wasn't to not be caught by L. It was just to not be caught. No matter what, Light would have to live the rest of his life making sure not to be caught. If not by L, Near, or Mello, he just had to make sure he didn't screw up so bad that some average joe of the street could have exposed him. Light could never let himself be revealed and would have to spend the rest of his life hiding in secret. When L was in the rain, his sound shattering line was: "Tell me Light, from the moment you were born, has there ever been a moment you told the truth?" But really, his line have replaced Light's name for Kira's; No matter what, Kira would have to spend the rest of his existence lying to everyone he knew forever. Kira always lied; Even to his own allies.
Whether Light won or lost, the outcome would not be determined until the moment he died.
I don't get why people wanted Light to win. If you want Light to win, then stop watching after Episode 25. (Or maybe Episode 26 minus the final 15 Seconds.) We get to see Light win, and then we get to see him lose, so we really get to see both possible endings.
While I think a sequel to Death Note (And I mean a full-blown series of volumes sequel) is technically possible, the original story of Death Note sees both of our main characters (and a bunch of others) perish, so it quite frankly can't be the same. (Although I can just imagine some big studio company completely jumping the shark and doing some random time-travel plot of people from the future traveling back in time to try and stop the death of L/Light.)
It's honestly sad that Death Note had to end. But it was amazing that it got to have an actual ending, that (at least for me) I found satasfying. Kira had to live his life in a constant chess match against the world. When you have to play a chess game forever, it's only all the more likely that you'll make a few too many bad moves in a row and get yourself checkmated, which is exactly what happened. It only took the world 5 years, but it happened. Death note was never going to have a happy ending

The scene were nears assistant makes an exact replica of the second notebook in secret while at the bank even though the notebook had thousands of names on it, and it magically takes him a few minutes where nobody notices, thats just plot bs.
Light did win, he killed L. Everything that happened after was just the writers being "bad guy cant win" even though it would have made sense for the story.
