You know before I watch this anime I have a very weird habit of saying out in rain when I am thinking something causally but i realise I am actually a sociopath.
The way the noise cuts out when L asks Light if he's ever told the truth, and then it slowly fading back in, is so well done. It perfectly presents the feeling of your heart skipping a beat without actually having a heartbeat sfx thrown in. I forgot just how great the production of the anime was.
I love the detail of Light’s eye being downcast just for that moment too, and then when it cuts to the shot of him further away his eyes are back up, and then we get a close-up of L’s eyes staring right back at Light. L noticed Light’s physical reaction to that question-a quick glance to the ground.
I had this exact reaction when I was doing something that I knew it was wrong but didn't want to admit and a friend (a girl) call me out very strongly, saying something close to "what you are doing is horrendous"... And suddenly all sound faded away completely and all my field of view was suddenly spinning, it threw me off balance and it was very hard to think... It all lasted like 10 seconds but her words were like someone knocked me out with a punch. And this happened only once in all my life, so it was just mindblowing for me to watch this experience replicated in this scene.
@@TwinEv3 yeah, I think it’s only stated in the how to read, but it makes the scene where L calls Light his first friend even better for me, when you know he’s just lying to make Light feel bad for killing him
For those that don't know, when L says he can "hear bells". The bells represent funeral bells (implying that L was about to die at that moment)... L could only consciously hear it, but not Light.
Yeah, he even kind of suggests it when he is telling Light about "I wonder if it's a church, maybe a wedding, or perhaps a..." He very clearly was going to say a funeral at that moment
Complex scene. In L's mind - Kira has returned. Light Yagami is acting off, not in tune with his past self. There's only 1 conclusion to be drawn - Kira has somehow returned to controlling Light. Or perhaps it's more likely Light gave away the notebook & has gotten possession back. The identity of Kira was held within the book itself. In his search to prove Light's guilt, he's unleashed the real Kira once again. L worries the Light he knew of recently was always capable of becoming Kira. That despite it all - Kira is his true unfiltered soul. You test a man's character through power - and Light has failed. L wonders if he would also fail. If somebody as clever, well adjusted, heartfelt & honest could become a ruthless monster - then it means everyone is a monster, right? We can chalk it all up to the Death Note corrupting everyone, it's not their fault. We're only human. Or - the more terrifying answer. The one L truly fears. Light was never corrupted by the Death Note. He was only revealed for the special type of monster he is. One of those lying monsters that L warns of in the Relight films. A monster that lies. Posing as human, without humanity. Eating, without hunger. Studying with no interest. Seeking love with none to give. L believed himself to be this monster. Now he's being eaten by one. Light is assuming the identity of L, his tactics, his planning, he's consuming L entirely. He's going to continue to devour L until Whammy's House is gone. Kira would have no issue wiping out an orphanage if he thought they posed a threat. Light Yagami is L's vision of himself being spat back at him. Long before Kira, long before the notebook - Light Yagami lies. Whether he knew it or not, Light had Kira buried in his soul. A true monster. Lying to even himself. L here is making a genuine attempt to ask if Light has always been this way. No bullshit, no tricks - is that the real you? Is Light in there? Have you just been corrupted? Light fails. He knew L knew. He could've just said yes. He could've let it all drop for one second & be a human. Instead Light presented this almost rehearsed response to being confronted - equating his behaviour to others & excusing any wrongdoing in his life. Light truly understood L's request, truly understood L knew the game was coming to an end & STILL lied. That's why Light's smirk at L in his final moments is so gut-wrenching. Light could've continued to lie - as he normally would. But no, Light had one reason to reveal the truth. He needed L to know he beat him. He's essentially denied being Kira for the last time, even when L gave him an opportunity to stop playing before the game ends. Light even repeats this later - declaring victory at the last second. Not to drop the facade, but to gloat. He did the same to Naomi. The only other ever person to see the monster. This is when L realised who Light truly was. Light Yagami isn't Kira. Kira is wearing Light Yagami like a suit. He's irredeemable. He lies. He's L's darkest reflection. He's never been under the influence of the Death Note or a Death God, or anyone else. It's just been an evil boy doing these things. And L pitied him to an extent, knowing his end would be Near.
I like how L asks Light if there has ever been a time since he was born where he has just told the simple truth and Light's immediate answer is to waffle, reframe the question as "have you ever told a lie?" Say "everyone lies *from time to time* " and then end with "Ive *done my best* to never tell a lie that will hurt people."
@꧁TwinEv3꧂ it was also prodding his innocent answer for everything. Kira's visible in the negatives of Lights presentation. He's almost just admiring the mechanism of it
if i remember right, every time L and light had a conversation, his "chances Light is Kira" percentage went up, simply by the way Light responded to his questions. By the time he died it was like 99.9%, but he couldn't prove anything so he couldn't do anything, ultimately leading to his death, which was one of the best mastermind kill scenes i've ever seen.
He was always certain that light was Kira. The mangaka said whenever L gives a any percentage he’s lying. If he gives any percentage at all it really means he’s over* 90% sure that his suspect is guilty. So he was likely at 99% by a very early stage. Just could never get the hard evidence to prove it to his peers/ in court.
@@Anoxyy_7 yeah they were fake in the sense that whenever he gave one it meant he actually suspected you over 90%. Any number he gave was irrelevant. Like you said he knew light was Kira since basically the first percentage. He just couldn’t get the evidence needed to convict him. Light wasn’t necessarily great at hiding that he was Kira, he was however great at discarding any evidence of it.
@@ShuichiMinamino777 light never wanted to hide that he was kira. He wanted to kill L and cat and mouse. He could have easily sat back and not killed anyone for ages and never draw suspicion back to himself.
@@tofu8688 I'd argue there was evidence, the problem is the other giys wanted to treat it like a normal case when this was beyond that. They already had hard evidence on Light and Misa once they locked them up
This show really had some interesting and ambiguous moments. I actually don't feel that L's death was simply "Light winning", because of the circumstances around it (i.e. Rem's role). It felt more like Light completely losing his human soul, if that makes sense. So like, his greatest "victory" dooms him. Such an interesting show.
L always had another case to go to even if he solved the Kira case. Light has nothing else in his life but the Kira case. As soon as Light ended the "game" with L, he lost his reason for living. Light never truly wanted to be a god, he just wanted to prove he had no equal. When he accomplished that goal his life became meaningless, and he subconsciously got sloppy so someone could play cat and mouse with him again with disastrous results since he lowered his standards to continue the "game.."
@@danielschrecker9996 I get that argument, but Light did make a BIG deal about changing society itself, even before L showed up. I think an alternative view is interesting, that he didn't actually believe in his stated goals, but I struggle to think of examples where that is displayed in the anime or manga.
The first and last person he ever felt could maybe understand him. A rare peak at the beautiful art that can be created by exploring the madness of cognitive dissonance.
Light giving the perfect answer to L's question about ever telling the truth is the perfect example of how L knows light is kira. Light always has the perfect answer/solution/alibi of how he isn't Kira. But the problem is, why would someone that's innocent try so hard to be innocent? Like you can be innocent but sometimes screw up and not have the perfect answers to give or explanations on how you're not the bad guy. This is how L always knew Light was Kira even without evidence. No innocent man tries so hard to look and be innocent.
Agreed. Perhaps because the guilt is coming to Light like a brick wall and there's no way to climb over it, when the gates were right in front him lol.
@@5hk33zn Difference between trying to relentlessly prove your innocence and trying to look innocent. Like the difference between Light (when he lost his memories of Kira) and Kira (with all the memories). Light when he lost his memories desperatly tried to prove his innocence. He did and said things impulsively and it didn't seem all planned. L even picked up on this a few times and thought by himself why he was suddenly acting so different and actually began thinking he was innocent. L didn't think he was wrong about Light because people were still dying while Light was locked up in jail, but because Light was acting so differently and not as Kira anymore. Kira on the other hand was always cool-headed, always was at the right place the right time and said the right things at the right time. He was fitting the "innocent" character perfectly, too perfect. This isn't just my theory. If you really focus on why L always suspected Light to be Kira from the beginning you'll find out it's this exact reason.
At this point L knew who Kira was. If you pay attention he wanted to talk under heavy rainfall, so no audio recording equipment could pickup their conversation. This was him hoping he was wrong for once in his life and coming to terms with him it. But when he asked if he'd ever told the truth, he was giving him a chance to come clean just to him as his friend and rival. He'd already accepted defeat. And was tired of the being alone. As he chose to lose so he wouldn't have to destroy his only friend he ever had. He also knew a successor would follow. So he had no reason to fight on if he chose not too. The job would still be done.
In the "how to read: Death Note" the writer states that L actually straight hates Light. He can't stand Light cause Light is such a two faced liar. He knows Light is Kira and he knows that Light thinks himself special when he's just a psychopath with superpowers. L may have felt he was the closest to relating to him but this would show that L actually has no one who relates on the planet. If they did relate, Light would've realized this was the one time he could've told L, "I lie all the time" and that would've genuinely thrown L off. Light making this BS excuse shows he's not as smart as he wants to think. It shows that while L may be right he's never gonna see the proof that leads the Lights arrest/death and that it took divine intervention to beat L.
@@yung_wise5861 L would've had many cases involving psychopaths and I don't think Light would've bothered him much as being another. If he hates Light it could be resentment that he has the potential to be his only friend, if only he was an honest person.
As much as I enjoyed watching Light as Kira, it was really satisfying seeing him struggle to keep up the charade. Now that he has his memory back, he can't figure out how the GOOD Light would respond to the lying thing, and it shows when he hesitates and then skirts around the question. The Light that had no memory of Kira would've answered immediately, and probably would've been offended.
"i had a feeling you would say something like that" that disappointment in him, not even when he knows he's going to lose Light wont be truthful to him
Light's ego was ultimately his downfall, and that's why I think introducing Near after L was a mistake. When L died, Lights' ego was at its peak, Light needed L to stay on top of his game, and without him Light started to make careless mistakes. Mistakes he still would have made without Near, because L was Lights' ultimate adversary and his ultimate triumph. Near was not necessary because the story would have ended similarly without him. And it would have ended soon after L died, which would have been way more poetic, but I'm thinking they wanted to stretch the series out a bit longer for sales.
I actually liked the point Near served. Granted I do think that's the weakest part of the series but I feel that Near played two significant roles. 1. Many people theorized that L ultimately lost because he put Light up on this platform and fed into his ego. L considered this to be his greatest case whereas Near never lost sight of who Light truly was, a murderer who just happened upon the greatest weapon in human history. 2. Near was lesser than L, in fact Light perfectly predicted his plan and would have won. However Mello's random act of chaos allowed Near to gain a much needed clue to turn things around. If this had been L, Light would have doubled check his plan and had a number of backups in case because at the end of the day Light respected L whereas he looked down on Near and considered him beneath his noticed. In a way that is poetic, L lost to Light because he respected him too much whereas Light lost to Near because he didn't respect him enough.
@Zoius Kritselius Mikami's part in the story was after L's death. My comment was about the series ending shortly after L's death and how Near was unnecessary. Even still, Light's ego is what made him believe Mikami was completely under his control.
@@diswazzi1683 'Light started to make careless mistakes' I commented upon this specifically which I took it to mean that you say that Light lost due to solely his mistakes and I mentioned Mikami. Honestly, it has been a long time since I saw the anime, what careless mistakes had Light been making since L died? My memory says that he was as smart and meticulous as he was when L was alive for years; but also when Near became his opponent.
I love that L and Light have lied to each other so much but have both always been aware that the other knows the truth. They both knew they were playing a game. They had covert conversations like this but both understood each other very well.
L won early in the series. The only thing he really could not account for was the Death Note itself and how the supernatural was at play. But he knew Light was Kira. He played the game perfectly and lived up to his reputation if you asked me. And he went out on a perfect record, I don't care what anyone says.
@@mikehvh1337 Remember the rooftop conversation? Right before he died? He knew the exact same way that if you were standing in the middle of nowhere with another person and you turned your back to them and you got smacked and turned around and asked "why did you hit me?!" and the other individual said " it wasn't me." I didn't see you, but all logical evidence points to you. It's about logic and deductive reasoning. That alone has convicted countless criminals without their confession.
You also have to realize how noble L is considering he knew he was going to die, he knew Light was Kira, and didn't try to kill Light by taking justice into his own hands. L is a serious man of principle.
One can call it a mistake to not end kira's mass murdering by taking matters into his own hands, but he just wasn't a killer like kira, and would rather die before coming one. Even with the proof to place 100% guilt on light, he would probably still want his punishment to go through proper legal channels, not his own hand.
exactly. I wonder in his mind if he thought about writing Light's name in the death note. he already showed he was prepared to test the notebook and he fully knew Light was Kira but took a humbling defeat
@@Shade04rek Yep yep. It's why L says he's similar to Kira. They both have iron wills and steadfast principles. Lines they won't cross. L won't kill for the same reason Kira won't make the deal for the eyes, even though both actions would've made their lives so much easier. Such actions don't agree with their view of right and wrong.
Love Light breaking character at 1:43. L’s words are making no sense to him, and he’s trying to figure out how the good guy Light character would respond and it’s frustrating him. Probably looking too deep into this, but L’s look at 2:54 seems like he’s just so done with Light’s lies. It’s probably so grating and annoying to hear when you know he’s Kira 100%.
One thing that makes this scene better is the fact that L doesn't frame it as, "have you been lying this whole time?" or some equivalent. Instead, he asks that, if over the course of Light's entire life, has he ever truly been honest with another person? It could even extend to being honest with himself. L is genuinely wrong footed that someone can be so delusional and egotistical that there hasn't been a second of that person's life where they critically looked inward and question themselves. Light is so quick to justify everything he ever does and never seems to admit fault. Even before he had the Death Note, he always had the potential to be just as monstrous if he took a single step out of line. L sees this and while he can't prove without doubt that Light is Kira, he is still astounded that there never was a true moment of transformation. Light was always Kira, from the moment he was born, lying to the world that he was just Soichiro Yagami's son.
The fact that he knew and we all knew watching how the events were progressing.. I was crying throughout the episode .. my only consolation is that Light meets the end he deserves at the end
(Spoiler warning for last episode) I felt bad for L, and Light getting killed at the end was so satisfying to watch. It was my favorite part lol. And when Ls ghost was there, it was like Light showing L he admits to his mistakes
@@TwinEv3 don't hate on light for killing L, if L catched light it would have ended up the same way anyway... ryuk would have finished light off. It was either light or l and light won !
@@prometheus4528 Dang, Ig I didn't pay attention enough lol, that might be it, but I'm pretty sure she also did it for Misa, since Rem disappeared afterwards?
None of this was a ploy to catch Light, he wasn’t recording or anything. This was L having a heart to heart, no lies. Just an honest conversation between rivals after so much time playing mind games. For all either of them knew, their battle of pride was all in their head.
it was a trap actually, and one Lawliet had planned far in advance he had already told his agency that if he was killed in the kira case investigation to assume the prime suspect is in fact Kira and outlined all the clues and facts that they had learned to prove it with the exception that they first needed to catch him red handed in the act or to gain a confession. Lawliet knew his death was sealed the moment him and Light both touched the notebook and he paid close attention to Light's reaction to the shinigami any normal human woulda flipped out, but Light did not lol it was checkmate for Lawliet
From a writing perspective, I really appreciate how L mentions wedding bells, but then trails off. That the viewer is led to think of funeral bells without it being explicitly mentioned is really pretty smart, subtle in a way that's totally fitting for a scene like this, I think.
I wouldn't say 'missed' so much. He didn't know the nature of the death note. He already knew Light was Kira, to the point that when he found out about the death note he realized there were fake rules in the book BECAUSE they cleared Light. He knew that light would have realized they could just test the 13 day rule, so Light had a plan set in motion to kill him, and there was nothing he could do.
Yeah ultimately L knew that he was doomed the moment Rem came into the picture. He even asked for her when Watari was dying. He surmised they all have the power to kill only needing a face. The saddest part is that the rest of the task force actively wanted Light to be innocent. Their biases caused a lot of details to go unnoticed.
I remember watching this scene and when L asked him that question “have you ever lied” he waited for light to create a rhetoric that will make him less guilty of being Kira, people who lie and deceive will create a drawn out story instead of a simple answer, but the fact that light did it again this time with a simple yes or no question showed L that he was in fact Kira
L’s death made me cry uncontrollably when I first watched it. Even watching this brings me back to that feeling I had, something so real and special this story tapped into.
Oh my God... so no one else is gonna roast this boy for "crying uncontrollably" over an Anime death? 😂🤦♂️ come on now I'm a fan aswell but when he died I was like "oh shit!" Not crying like a baby toughen up a bit
I really need to rewatch this show. Death Note is the reason why I fell in love with anime. I know so many people also became anime fans because of this great show
One of the only tolerable animes I’ve seen. Actually a great story with minimal cringe, redundant fight scenes, and endless seasons. Wish more were like it
2:54 At this point L knows Light is Kira when he asked a simple yes or no question and light responded with a long philosophical answer. L knows he is about to die, he just needed confirmation that he was right
In the manga, nobody hears L's final thoughts. But the moment of confirmation was Light's reaction to L's death. In his last moments, Light was cradling L. And as his friend lay dying in his arms, what did Light do? He was smiling, very smuggly. And in the manga, as L sees this, his final thoughts were "I wasn't wrong." In a way, Light's cruelty towards L in his final seconds was exactly what L needed to die in peace. And it was only after seeing that smug smile that he closed his eyes and peacefully passed on without resistance. Knowing he was right was all L needed to be at peace.
The saddest part about L and Light's battle, is that L knew that Light was guilty, the problem was never finding Kira, it was convincing everyone else that Light was Kira. It kind of makes L's death feel a bit better, knowing that in his final moments he saw Light's smile and knew that he was right.
To this day I still wonder what it would've been like to have Light just tell the truth here and realize he's gone too far. Imagine how that conversation would've went down and how differently the show would've ended.
It's like? He's standing in the rain and literally says he hears the bells tolling before flat out confronting the murderer and then giving him a congratulatory foot massage lol. He's not being subtle about it.
On the JCS Criminal Psychology youtube channel he has videos analysing how criminals respond in interrogations. An innocent person responds to accusations with short answers and is often offended that they have been accused. A guilty person never seems surprised that they are being accused and they give long answers, giving far too many reasons why they are innocent. I feel like an innocent friend's response to "Have you ever told the truth in your life?" Would be "Fuck you, man." Light doesn’t seem at all surprised by the confrontational questions and gives a ChatGPT response.
@@TwinEv3 such an amazing scene, and he knew lost for multiple reasons. The biggest was knowing that there’s another death note out there that he didn’t have
@@stevenlathrop1494 Yep, but he still stayed strong and didn't really show anger towards Light... he just showed signs of being worried, like when Watari died
L talking 'bout bells ringing.. "I wonder if it's a church, or maybe a wedding or, perhaeps a..., a... " He was gonna say, "perhaeps a funeral", stating.his pessimist soul state, but they brilliantly made the dialogue go in a different direction.
This scene was probably the saddest scene in the whole series. L was an absolute genius. He knew he was about to die, and he knew he couldn't do anything about it, so he simply accepted it as his defeat. He was absolutely right about Light being Kira, but he never had the evidence to prove it or the support from the other task force members which is why he had no choice but to accept it, as he knew he couldn't do anything about it. The last scene when Light was dying, he sees L on the other side behind some gate or something, which signifies the way he accepts his defeat before his death. This whole series was an absolute masterpiece
1:49 Light sees L's sadness and tries to comfort him with a joke, that is the part where the show speculates that light lost his all humanity after L's death
1:35 I don’t think many people realize that L and Light are both speaking in silver tongue at this part. L is saying everything he says is a lie and Light shouldn’t believe him, implying everything L says to Light is a test and act to get the truth revealed. Then Light responds by agreeing, basically telling L he knows he’s just testing Light. Light even says “I know this better than anyone” and even “there would be no end to my troubles if I took you seriously most the time” implying since he’s Kira he would be in a lot of trouble if he fell for L’s tricks. This show is the best
L's english VA was incredible. Death Note's english dub in general is great and is probably the only anime other than Bleach where I prefer the dub. It's a shame L's VA never got any big roles after this.
L "couldn't hear" what Light was asking but could "hear" the bells through the rain. Funeral bells in his mind. He just wanted to talk with Light before he died. This show...was so damn good, should never have killed off L though smh.
Remember prior to the point light forgot his memories, L was able to predict his reaction and thought process. As soon light forgot about being kira, L couldnt anticipated him as if he was a complete different person. I think this was L confirming that this is kira again and knowing full well he was going to die soon.
probably to draw Light near him under the heavy rain so they can talk heart to heart for the last time without potential recording device, he knew he is about to die (the bell). Light, of course, give a political answer, instead of just a simple "yes"
Some People missed it, but the reason L acted like he couldn’t hear light wasn’t because he was hearing bells over lights voice, it was to protect himself. Even though light didn’t have the notebook at this point L didn’t know that. So for safety he brought light to the rain so that he couldn’t use the notebook (the paper would be too wet). He knew 2 things 1. Light was Kira 2.he was about to die And light essentially confirmed it when he said he would never tell a lie that would harm someone
It’s so interesting how L is so aware even when he “isn’t”. I think in that moment he not only knew his time was up, but he knew who was the reason for his demise, and could only completely accept that he was going to end and not that the person who he saw as a true and genuine equal for the first time in probably forever was the cause. I think it was this scene here where Kira had truly won, not when L had crumbled to the ground as his heart stopped. It’s also very interesting that L couldn’t hear Light until he got closer to him in the rain, or, in English, L’s loss only happened because he was looking for Light, the scholar he played tennis with, in Kira, a mass murderer with an unexplainable power. Notice how he smiled cupping his hands over his ear in the beginning of the scene and it dropped immediately after.
It's so strange that you can't hear their inner monologues. It's like the scene is theris alone and mere viewers aren't even allowed to listen in. I think L's "have you ever lied" question was a peace offering that Light either didn't understand or was too prideful to accept. When Light lied again, I think that's when L knew. It's very sad. I just wanna give L a hug!
After reading through the comments I've come to a conclusion that I somehow never thought of before! People here are commenting on the obvious fact that L and Light had this conversation alone, on a roof, while it was pouring rain; making recording their conversation highly unlikely/impossible. The reason for this is that L was likely giving Light a chance to just be honest for once. Tell him, as the only friend L has ever had, the truth. L has conceded the battle by this point and knows that he's lost. He just wants Light to cut the bs for once. (I agree to all of this). However, Light continues his usual over-play of pretending to be innocent. He doesn't give L the satisfaction, or the honor of knowing. Of being honest. Until AFTER Light knows he's won. Once L falls from that chair and hits the ground, Light FINALLY tells him the truth. Just once. And even though it's full blown evil how he does it (the biggest shit-eating grin of all time) he still honors L's request for the truth. So in a way, by gloating and being a douche during L's final moments; Light unintentionally gives L peace of mind, knowing that he was right all along. Light accidentally honors L's request for the truth. Just once. Kind of changes his death in a way. L won. He knew he won. He just wouldn't be around to see it.
I agree with you that L wished that Light would show him who he really was, at least while they were on the roof, and at the last moment when Light showed that, L was relieved. But let's not forget that Light always liked to show his true self to worthy opponents in their final moments, and he did it before with Rei and Naromi
One of my favourite little moments of genius in this is that L forces Light to come to him. Very subtle way of saying who is actually in power, given what happens with Near. Absolute masterpiece this show is to this day.
The way L phrased that question would be a very simple answer for most people. Of course there has been at least one time in most people's lives where they have told the simple truth. But Light's inability to give a straight answer even here shows that his lying is pathological and affected him prior to the introduction of the death note. of course L's question was more sarcastic than anything else. basically L is saying that he knows Light is lying and he knows that Light will continue to lie, never dropping the act 'til the bitter end. Which is why L says, "I had a feeling you would say something like that." Even so, perhaps L had a feeling deep down, that maybe, just maybe, Light would come clean to him for a brief moment in the rain where no audio equipment would be able to pick it up and where there would be no proof. But of course that would never happen, L is somewhat defeated here, being quite confident he is correct about Light, but being unable to prove it definitively. meanwhile time is running out, and when it does, so too will his life.
Light could've had such a great future I doubt he wouldn't have met L, having an intellect closer to his than others, understanding him better and his inclination towards the detective branch I can literally imagine how the whole story wouldve gone if the death note didn't fall in Light's hands I actually wish they made a version where it didn't happen, time passed and L and Light had to fight together against another Kira
I don't think Light and L could ever truly work together. Death note or not, they're both just too prideful. I expect that if Light hadn't gotten the Death Note, L and he would have still come into conflict in some sort of second detective war (of which, L was the victor of the first).
@@laughisfun2003 if i remember correctly, tsugumi ohba confirmed that if Yagami Light didn't touch the notebook he'd be working alongside Lawliet to solve cases.
I think u missed the point here, light is not human. He is a natural born sociopath actually sick, braindead, these people they dont change, they are also in the austism spectrum, they will die this way. Most of criminals like light have mental health issues, they do things without a reason. Unreasonable human being. You think he is smart but in reality there is no real motivation for his acts. Pretty much like a robot.
We've been inside Light's head. We know he came up with the perfect answer. No normal person would answer with this big philosophical spiel in such a composed manner.
I just finished watching Death Note for the second time, even tho the first time that i saw L's death and the ending of the last episode i still somehow managed to watch it again, i guess that just says how good this show is (btw i couldn't watch L's death to the end, immediately after he started collapsing i just went to the next episode).
I hate that L had to die and after this episode it all really goes downhill, but they really went all out for his last episode alive.. The whole thing is just so amazing and well made and even though he dies, probably my favorite episode. When the rain faded and he asked Light if he has ever told the truth I got goosebumps. The scene close to the beginning of the episode that's a montage of Misa killing people gave me the same feeling. The music is great too. I just can't fathom how good this episode was 😭😭😭
this episode made me cry, as i’m sure it did for most people, the second part of this show just doesn’t do the masterpiece that was the first part justice, this was all so brilliantly crafted and planned out, L is probably one of my most favorite characters to ever exist, same with Light. they had such a good dynamic and it was fun to see them battle, L’s death was inevitable but still so unbelievably sad :( at least light got the ending he deserved
L knew light was Kira in this moment. when light was Kira at the start he would always give calm responses and answers that sound too innocent, but when he lost his memory for a while he would get borderline abusive and hit or shout at L if he was questioned or accused of anything. L deducted that light was probably Kira at one point like he says many times but that "the power of Kira" passed on from him. meaning that L had a could tell the difference between light as Kira and honest light. L asked him "from the moment you were born have you ever told the truth?" it was a test if how he would react when questioned, and its clear light failed as he gave a an answer that sounded too innocent and honest compared to how memory wiped light would lash out. even though he knew, he couldn't prove a thing because of the fake rules and the backlash he would get. I'm not the one who first noticed this but when you think about it its to obvious for L to have not noticed considering his intelligence. the fact you can notice small details like this and have it completely change the tone of the scene is why death not is so rewatchable.
When I saw this scene I had a feeling that L just gave up, not because Light was smarter or L could not have the chance to prove Light was Kira but because at the end he sees Yagami more like a friend than a rival and that was his mortal weakness. Both knew that and Light, as a psycho took advantage with that. The feelings were the doom for L, probably because his own personal trauma as an orphan. With Near was different (with the crucial help of Melo) because for Near was not personal, only a puzzle to solve, so Light couldn’t play “the friend card” anymore.
Lol L almost wins because they were about to try the notebook to confirm if one of the rule is true but he was executed by the shinigami first who loves Mikassa because that shinigami doesn't want Mikkassa to get caught . Can't you imagine to play with a game that you don't know about but almost win with it . And aside from that, The Japanese police did not even try the note with criminal who would be executed that day to confirm it even though it was the last resort and everything will be resolved .
This is one of my favorite episodes! L is one of my all time favorite fictional characters. I love how he helps dry Light’s feet after they come back in from the rain, even though he knows Light is going to kill him.
@@thegr8seth442, maybe this is a silly answer, but I always figured L just figured it out because he's that smart. However, to bolster this thought, here's some additional clues: First, as we already know, L was almost certain that Light was Kira, almost from the beginning. It was just a matter of proving it. Second, after L's death, the guy telling Near and Mello (can't remember who it was) says that L never chose a successor, so both Near and Mello end up filling the space left by L. After Mello's death, Near surmises that L intentionally did not choose a sucessor because he knew that neither one by himself could defeat Kira, and that Near needed Mello's chaos and Mello needed Near's logic and intentionality. Third, and this is one of my favorite scenes, immediately after Light's first interaction with Near, he thinks to himself that talking with Near was a familiar feeling. And the screen goes black, except for Light standing in the center, and it shows L running chains around Light. The idea I get from that shot is that L's death was exactly part of his plan, and even in death, L is outsmarting Light (i.e., L knew he couldn't defeat Light without dying, but in dying he orchestrated the events leading to Light's defeat). A lot of people dislike the show after L's death because they see Near as an inferior imitation of L (and granted, some of the logic becomes a little more dubious), but personally, I see the second half of the show as a testament to just how smart L really was. Hence, L is one of my favorite characters in fiction. Thank you for coming to my TED Talk.
This is similar to a interrogation tactic. If you make a big accusation and they try to logically defend themself it is more likely they are guilty an innocent person will usually get mad or argumentative about the validity of the accusation.
there are many interpretations of this scene but my interpretation was that L knew he was going to die and since he had light in front of him alone he kind of wanted to cut the bullshit, he knew that him and light have been playing cat and mose this whole time and that light also knew that, they were both aware, so in the last moment L wanted to pull the curtain and talk to kira directly, and light's overly robotic answer is a way of him saying "no, i will not give you that" and that's why he smiled after light's answer, realizing the uselessness of his attempt
Oh my god the sound design is so good. The way everything cuts out when L calls light out, and then the rain slowly comes back in as Light starts to explain away the accusation and get back control. It’s perfect
Bells are a metaphor of L's incoming funeral, that was easy. But only now it struck me... Since you were born? L says that he knows Kira was (re)born by the DN magic, especially after Kira regained his memory.
So many scenes, this included (given more the ending of this scene that isn’t shown), make me so sad because I feel bad it not been for the death note, these two would have been such amazing friends, but are forced to be mortal enemies.
This moment was unfortunately not in the manga. It just makes things even more sad. L doesn't know about Light's Watch. He has no evidence. Rem is being vague about the death note rules on purpose to confuse the investigation. Misa shortened her life for someone who doesn't like her. And Light's humanity is gone. He's not the pure nice guy with amnesia anymore. He's back to being a psychopath. The only one woth benefits is Ryuk enjoying the show.
I have a tendency to come back to this scene every once in a while. It's just fascinating to me how with just audio effects, they have conveyed the entire emotional tension between Light and L. It's a layered question which in a way represents L's victory over Light. He's always known Light is Kira with increasing levels of uncertainty. The question may seem a bit of an exaggeration at first, I mean everyone had to have told the truth at some point on their life. But it never was about the answer. Beyond that surface, L is mocking Light with a statement, rather than a question. For as long as he has known Light, there were always lies between them. Everything was a lie; their initial contact, the investigation, the schemes and ultimately Light managed to convince the whole world (more specifically, everything surrounding L) with his lies. Everyone but L, believed it. But L saw through it all and in this scene he is mockingly pondering if Light has lied the whole time even before they met, thus extending his whole life. Light has to pretend he can only see the surface level and tries to answer the "right way" by diminishing the implication. But he knows that "good" answer is just another pretense as if he doesn't understand the deeper layers, thus proving L's point. He knows there's nothing he can do but to take the humiliation of taking the question seriously. He's forced into a checkmate so he just makes a vague generic answer. And L has completely lost interest in that. He said what he wanted to say and his opponent couldn't even face him properly at that last moment. So he accepts it and moves on.
I wish he’d just told him. I wish Light had indulged L’s actual question of “are you Kira?” I’m sure he’d just kill him right after their conversation, but I think L deserved to hear the real truth from Light before it happened.
But L could be wearing a hidden camera/recorder at any moment. Light is almost egotistical enough to do that, but even he knows that would be too risky.
This definitely could have been L admitting he was going to lose, but.. I always interpreted it as L confronting Light with the fact that the game between them was inevitably going to end soon. L is convinced Light is Kira and knows Kira has to be close to killing him. L also has a way (the "test the rules in the book" maneuver) which will prove Light is Kira. At this point, both Light and L are a step or two away from defeating each other. L knew this, so he shows his hand and completely drops the facade they've maintained since meeting each other. L was basically saying, "One way or another, the game ends soon Kira." And at 2:20, L and Kira finally meet face to face for just a moment. Then Kira puts his Light mask on again. The bells don't necessarily have to be L's funeral bells, just the ones that will ring when their battle ends - since when it does, one of them will die.
I still like to think that L was sad because he thought he could be friends with Light, but as the case went on, it kept seeming like Light was his enemy. So he became sad. After all, loneliness is not good for humans. It biologically isn’t.
I’d like to think L consciously made the choice on either taking down light by giving up on his morals and the task forces opinions versus keeping on the same path knowing he would die. I think he didn’t feel like his heart was in the game to take down light himself in a way he didn’t want to. So he set the stage for his predecessors and light to face off and the winner of the bunch would win fair and square in the right way.
Here’s is L's Death Scene!

@Saan love being lonely you can watch the anime on crunchroll. I believe Netflix still has it, too. I'm not sure if Hulu still has it :)
It felt more comedic

For those that don't know, when L says he can "hear bells". The bells represent funeral bells (implying that L was about to die at that moment)... L could only consciously hear it, but not Light.
Yeah, he even kind of suggests it when he is telling Light about
"I wonder if it's a church, maybe a wedding, or perhaps a..."
He very clearly was going to say a funeral at that moment
"No more running for me dawg. Reapers' calling my name."

@@kalob4901 yes, it's referring to church bells and funeral bells. they relate to each other in some way. depends how you see it
Ask not for whom the bell tolls
L is so cool and you do him so much justice with this explanation
I love this comment
You explained this so beautifully, like bro😧
Near at the end happens to be capitalised… is that a pun?
I like how L asks Light if there has ever been a time since he was born where he has just told the simple truth and Light's immediate answer is to waffle, reframe the question as "have you ever told a lie?" Say "everyone lies *from time to time* " and then end with "Ive *done my best* to never tell a lie that will hurt people."
Me too! Because although he has "behaved " for a while, he turned into a huge liar
Ironically, Light did everything he could to avoid lying in that statement
People lying usually make it so convoluted instead of just a straight simple answer. Double speak.
@꧁TwinEv3꧂ it was also prodding his innocent answer for everything. Kira's visible in the negatives of Lights presentation. He's almost just admiring the mechanism of it
I think L asked to see if that was still light, or if kira had returned. Hence the "I thought you'd say something like that."

Perfectly said
That actually makes so much sense, because when Light was on L's grave, you could kinda tell he is insane
Just like Tony said to Cap "I dont trust a man without a dark side"
Maybe if Light was able to manipulate L by making his feelings feel true then he would have a better chance of winning unlike the ending.
the last sentence makes no sense to me, because many innocent men have faught relentlessly to prove their innocence
L knew who Kira was by the first time he introduced himself at Touou/Toudai
L never saw Light yagami as his friend, L calling light "his first friend" was solely to manipulate him.
L didn't have any affection for Light

I agree, he was much more careless without L, and they might have made it longer for sales, but I'm not sure lol
I guess the number of people who liked your comment forgot that the reason Light lost was partly due to Mikami.
@Zoius Kritselius Mikami's part in the story was after L's death. My comment was about the series ending shortly after L's death and how Near was unnecessary. Even still, Light's ego is what made him believe Mikami was completely under his control.

This scene was so painful… L knew he wasn’t wrong. That must’ve been so painful knowing something and no one believing you.

@@DeusGamez that’s true, but this scene didn’t need to happen for his plan to work.
L, you were truly the heart and soul of death note 😭
From a writing perspective, I really appreciate how L mentions wedding bells, but then trails off. That the viewer is led to think of funeral bells without it being explicitly mentioned is really pretty smart, subtle in a way that's totally fitting for a scene like this, I think.
Bro's a better detective than l
I love that, "perhaps a...," because we all know what he was about to say. Great dialogue.
L knew he had missed something critical and that his time was up. Such an incredible scene
He played a game he didnt even know the rules of
Having to finish the series without L was hard. Like I really missed him.

At this point L knows Light is Kira when he asked a simple yes or no question and light responded with a long philosophical answer.

My favourite anime of all time. Death note was just a perfect mix of some humour and an intelligent plot with great characters.
@Linkgame25
The "humor" part seems a little out of context to mention here, but I agree with the other thing you said😅
The whole feel of this anime is so unique. It was my first anime and even after watching hundreds of different anime I still come back to it.
I feel like an innocent friend's response to
"Have you ever told the truth in your life?"
Would be
"Fuck you, man."
Light doesn’t seem at all surprised by the confrontational questions and gives a ChatGPT response.

Sooo True ¡¡
I sometimes wonder how dreadful he had to have felt knowing he was going to die.
0:40 i love that face
To me, the battle between L and Light is one of the best battles of all entertainment. I've watched it over and over.
Which is why L says, "I had a feeling you would say something like that."
Even so, perhaps L had a feeling deep down, that maybe, just maybe, Light would come clean to him for a brief moment in the rain where no audio equipment would be able to pick it up and where there would be no proof.
But of course that would never happen, L is somewhat defeated here, being quite confident he is correct about Light, but being unable to prove it definitively. meanwhile time is running out, and when it does, so too will his life.
Light could've had such a great future
I doubt he wouldn't have met L, having an intellect closer to his than others, understanding him better and his inclination towards the detective branch
I can literally imagine how the whole story wouldve gone if the death note didn't fall in Light's hands
I actually wish they made a version where it didn't happen, time passed and L and Light had to fight together against another Kira
🔥
Yeah, I agree
this episode made me cry, as i’m sure it did for most people, the second part of this show just doesn’t do the masterpiece that was the first part justice, this was all so brilliantly crafted and planned out, L is probably one of my most favorite characters to ever exist, same with Light. they had such a good dynamic and it was fun to see them battle, L’s death was inevitable but still so unbelievably sad :( at least light got the ending he deserved
And aside from that, The Japanese police did not even try the note with criminal who would be executed that day to confirm it even though it was the last resort and everything will be resolved .
l doesnt like light
"Light was smarter" =)) 😂
Author comfirmed that L is the smartest person in his manga
I heard that the writer revealed that L actually hated Light.
This is one of my favorite episodes! L is one of my all time favorite fictional characters. I love how he helps dry Light’s feet after they come back in from the rain, even though he knows Light is going to kill him.
That’s probably an allusion to the last supper, where Jesus washed the disciples’ feet (even knowing Judas would betray him)
But how did he know light's going to kill him?
@@CrystalFlames, that's exactly the parallel I saw in it.
@@thegr8seth442, maybe this is a silly answer, but I always figured L just figured it out because he's that smart. However, to bolster this thought, here's some additional clues:
First, as we already know, L was almost certain that Light was Kira, almost from the beginning.
L face to face with a monster who lies.
Yep, somehow he stayed so calm even though he knew he Kira all along
Imagine L pushes light off the building and frames it as an accident during the rain
