    Allen is a true pioneer. He's created an industry in North America. Sarting with backwoods van camping done in the 60's with his VW van conversions. And look at the employment he provides for his skilled labourers. And seems like such a chill boss. Glad God things happen for good people. Hat off to Allen.

      I agree, wow, I've heard of Sportsmobile, as well as Quigley but I think Sportsmobile would get my business based on their conversions that take a van to a whole new...umm house on wheels. Excellent company, and I was amazed when Alan pointed out all his stuff is made in California (I'm sure with parts from overseas, but someone's gotta put that stuff together somewhere). I had no idea Sportsmobile was a 50+ year old company.

      Such a sham that USA had to outsource its manufacturing to China. Even people like us living in South Asia are aware of and envy the famous "American Dream".

      The problem is made in USA inevitably gets unions like the UAW involved, ends up like GM where something like $4000 of the cost of each car goes to paying for the medical care and pensions of long retired workers. Its great to talk about living wages etc but if everyone is living the good life on a blue collar career youre going to have products priced out of reach. As it is none of the people working for this company can afford to buy what they produce unless they want to live in it full time.0

    This is the most informative and entertaining video I've ever seen on this topic. What makes this video work so splendidly is that the owner was super articulate, super organized, and he was allowed to put several cogent points together successively WITHOUT being peppered with obnoxious comments and questions all along the way. A very well done video and so full of information you have to watch it over and over again while taking notes.

    That is hands down the best tour video of Sportsmobile ever . Mr. Feld has a genuine love for his product and the van lifestyle . My last van was a Sportsmobile poptop roof only van with the cabinets built by some cabinet maker and was a lot of fun . The penthouse (oddly not referenced in those terms here ) was a great place to sleep . Unfortunately my wife couldn't sleep there due to health issues so I bought a van motorhome and sold the van to two Australian kids who travelled North America in it for a year , put 25,000 miles on it and sold it before they left back to Australia .

    As someone working in a high-end manual assembly line - although in a completely different domain, I work for Totem Acoustic in audio - I just want to give a quick shout-out to the all the workers and also to explain the price on those things... a lot of people say that it's "unjustified" to price those around 100k. If it was unjustified, then they would've been out of business a long time ago! Yes, those are expensive. But, they're all hand-built, made in the USA by skilled craftsmen and craftswomen. Please take into account that 90%+ companies in just about all domains - especially in the automotive industry - have some sort of semi or fully automated production lines. And even when it says that they're products are "handmade", it usually means they hire employees to replace robots that cost too much upfront and automate everything else.
    Those skills take years to build and as such, command respect and a good salary. There is a reason for why high-end, truly hand-assembled products command such a high price, and that reason is, unfortunately, real hand-assembling and building processes are a *luxury*. Those vehicles are for people who want and can afford, the very best. They are also houses on wheels that can go off-road, offer more space than just any other converted van because of the pop-up top, and are completely stealthy when wanted compared to RVs. So it's an investment for full-time van lifers/digital nomads whose business depends on the capacity to move with as little hassle as possible from one point to another, constantly, with perfect reliability. A DIY van will never give you the reliability of a vehicle converted by experienced craftmen in a great facility, period. And the investment is (still) much less than a house... you DO get what you pay for.

    • @colliecoform6238

      Having been in the military over two decades, then with the airline almost as much time, and travel around the world, I would like to say that there is nothing like American Craftsmanship. That is why anything american is in such demand in foreign countries.

    • @captainz4137
      @captainz4137 5 років тому +3

      There's nothing like true American Craftsmanship..-.-. It is tremendously appreciated by people from other countries. IE: in Siria, a family STATUS is measured by the brand of refrigerator the have. Usually it is not placed in the kitchen like we do in the USA, but in the living room so people that visit, can see i, and admire it. Whirlpool is one brand that is at the top of the list. Crazy right?

    Nice to know American craftsmanship is still alive and it can work in California, the land of regulation and unions. These babies have got to be pricey. Some units are rich man's toys but, as he says, many are working vehicles of some sort. There doesn't appear to be models, just custom designs. His final remarks cover the use of these as living units in the the otherwise unaffordable West Coast. As a far away Easterner, there looks to be a war going on for control of the streets. Nice tour and thanks to the girl for playing the customer.

    Great video! I actually didn't know SMB did some of their 4x4 conversions in house. I always assumed Quigley or some other outfit did them all. The 4x4 system on that Econoline cutaway is the real deal! I would like to have heard more info about their systems, including battery/solar types and amounts offered, what types of heating and hot water systems they offer, fresh/grey/black tank capacities, etc. I'm seriously considering buying a SMB conversion in a few years for my retirement adventure vehicle. I appreciate the fact that they do fully customized builds, so you can have it exactly as you want it, and they're also not hugely overpriced, like most class B vans. I have read a few negative reviews of their build quality, but it seems to be a pretty solid operation.

    • @PumaPete
      @PumaPete 5 років тому

      I’ve been looking at RVs now for a while. I started to really like these vans until I saw the price for one! I would rather have a 4X4 super duty with a slide in camper. I can put the camper on jacks and have the truck by itself or I can leave it on the truck and have a 4 wheel drive camper. The price for these vans is outrageous. There are either a ton of people with money to burn or a ton of people who think nothing of going into debt for a depreciating asset. With a slide in camper the vehicle can be replaced when it gets old. With a van you’re stuck with the same worn out vehicle after ten or 15 years.

    Very interesting story about their early experience with VW. It is seldom the vendor who has all the control over their conversion models because the manufacturer rules the roost. Really enjoyed the video!!

    This company really rocks! They are super adaptive to the full spectrum of customers and their needs. One strong emergent recreational and convenience trend is the use of recumbent trikes. Especially the mid range to high end foldable and/or collapsable trikes like the Catrike, HP Velotechnik, or Greenspeed trikes. The space under the bed is ideal for storing these trikes in their collapsed state. Large heavy duty zippered bags with carrying handles are ideal for putting these collapsed trikes and seats into so they don't slide about and scratch things up. The design configuration to accommodate one or more trikes of this kind is a prudent objective for sure.

    Wow...what a first class operation! If money was no object, and you have the time to wait for delivery, this is definitely the place to go. 14 months backlog!...no wonder the used market for these are so tight. One question though...I was surprised they used denim insulation. I thought denim can absorb moisture which will lead to mold, mildew and rust behind the walls. Unless someone can tell me different, I would prefer some other type of insulation.

    • @brad4908
      @brad4908 6 років тому +2

      Right about the denim. Unless they’ve found a way to treat it to stop the mold, or a super air ventilation system.

    • @dlg5485
      @dlg5485 6 років тому +3

      Agreed. I would avoid denim insulation altogether. Given the custom nature of the SMB brand, I'm sure they'll use whatever insulating material you choose...for an additional cost, of course.

      David Golembeski obviously you don't know how to make anything by yourself the other vehicle does look good you can do that yourself for fun that's the money I did it you can do it too

    • @shiitakestick
      @shiitakestick 6 років тому

      did i not hear him say the denim only
      covered the actual insulation ?

    • @David-rx2to
      @David-rx2to 6 років тому

      I believe denim insulation is just what it sounds like...recycled cotton blue jeans...they might add some other materials to get it to bind together, (don't know for sure) but essentially it is cotton, so no, it isn't a layer of denim over some other type of insulation.

    It’s funny how no matter how advanced technology progresses, there are certain processes that simply don’t change because of the simplistic nature of the core method. The big one is sewing (which is an excellent skill to learn to do well). I see the end design of that long arm industrial walking foot sewing machine the woman was using to construct the interiors and it is literally identical to the 1922 Singer 111 I had in my shop which I gave to a friend. The thing is literally 100 years old and still works like a champ. Pretty cool. 👍🏻😎👍🏻
