I discovered you last month while being sick of my rat-race life in SoCal. Bing watched most of your VLOGs, and wishing & working hard to make Van Life a reality again. Done VanLife in the Kitsap Peninsula, WA and NW in 2012-13 till the $$$ ran out & one of the best times in my life. Keep on living free...
I’m subscribed to a bunch of van/RV channels & watching this week’s episode reminded me why yours is one of my favorite. Nobody researches areas like you guys. Not just campsites & amenities, but things to do. I’ve drove through that area a dozen times, now I’m inspired to go back and ‘see’ it.
+swix ing thank you! This is the best! We love sharing the beauty that is all around us. And our goal is to share and inspire others….. so it’s nice to know we inspired you! Wish we could have spent a bit more time in the area. Pictures rocks is also on my list! NEXT TIME!
It’s been awhile since I have commented on your videos but I just wanted to remind you how awesome the two of you are ! Just incase you may have forgotten lol. Keep inspiring all of us , winter is slowly approaching us here in Michigan and I don’t know how we would make it through to spring without you ! Thx again…. Jim, Wendy and Kira 🙂
+James Smith thank you! We appreciate you popping in to reminds us😂😂 I would LOVE to see Michigan in the winter 🥶 not living in the van though! We are headed to Arizona for the winter.
Good morning Dave, Carrie & double ear rubs Roodle ! As Parents you go out of your way to keep your four legged children safe ! Sometimes they’re the ones who return the favor by letting us know something just doesn’t feel right ! Always listen & follow one another’s heart ! What an amazing video & spectacular locations ! Keep up the great work, stay safe & keep smiling !
Loved seeing that big boat come in!! Has Roodle ever acted that strangely at any other campsites you've been to? So glad you listened to his instincts! GOOD job Roodle!
+Patti Crane's Lane he has never acted that way! He wasn’t fond of some of the deep forests in maine but this was a definite STRONG, INTENSE reaction! We talked to some locals later and they thought probably wolves 🐺 they said there are a lot in the area.
First there's a smell in the air that dogs are able trace before us humans can smell it, then you'll find long course hair on the corner of your van, then it rocks a bit and you convince your selves it's the wind , now you can smell something like skunk, but with a trace of the worst blue cheese you ever came across on the trail, don't be scared it's only big foot
You mentioned a funny smell at the campground and that Ruddle didn't like it. You said Ruddle tucked his tail and tried to herd you back to the van. The way I figure it, Ruddle must have gotten the scent of a Sasquatch. Thar be tales of Big Foot, some know them as "Boogers" frequenting Wisconsin and surrounding states. It's been reported that the mighty beasts love water, un- attended ice chests, forests and garbage cans. Ruddle was saving your lives. No telling what those un- predictable beasts might do if they cross your path, especially after dark! Happy Halloween!
This is why I don’t go outside after dark! I’m scared just reading your comment 😂😂😂 some said put the trail camera out…… sometimes I don’t want to know!
Sasquatch. It was a Sasquatch 😂 I love the National Forests campgrounds. It’s worth the cost. We just left one in north Georgia close to Helen Ga in the Chattahoochee NF and it has trash, pit toilets and potable water from a hand pump. Great video 👍🏼
+The Salty Medic lol…. Roodle was not impressed! Someone said we should put out a trail camera. 1st) our cheap trail camera sucks 2nd) maybe it’s best I don’t know what’s out there😂😂😂 I also love the off the beaten path NF campgrounds.
We've hiked areas with our dogs through the years while travelling, and they've done the same things. They know when danger is ahead! Thanks for another beautiful, refreshing, informative video!
+Sheryl AZ yes…. Roodle was onto something! We are in Oklahoma City on our way to Dallas. We are spending some time with family for a few days. The wedding is in one week…. We arrive Wednesday for the festivities 🥳
What a beautifully done, well edited video with wonderful relaxing music. I loved it. Such a beautiful area. I'd love to see and swim in the great lakes some day. My bucket list keeps growing. Your videos are so inspiring. Thanks for sharing your wonderful adVANtures with us, and for all the hard work you put into each fantastic video. Safe travels! 👍😊♥️
+Marilyn Renaud the lake is frigid cold…. All the time! Like in the high 30’s low 40’s temperature wise! People were swimming though…. Not me! Also getting me in a wetsuit would be quite the video in itself😂😂 I totally respect the Lake…. Thanks for coming along!
Thanks again for taking us along Dave and Carrie. Carol and I just got back from Wilderness Landing in Baker Florida as well as Biloxi and Natchez, Mississippi. Mississippi has A LOT of beautiful country roads and very scenic and easy driving. Downtown Natchez is very peaceful, quiet and quaint. It was a wonderful getaway to relaxation, decompression and peace. Carol and I are still trying to absorb it all and hold onto it a little while longer. Be safe. Be blessed. Have safe travels. I hope Storm Trooper does well.
At the campground Mr. Roodle did not like he could have smelled coyote, wolf, bear not likely any moose. There are also cougar spotted on trail cameras even though the dnr says they are not there. People do report seeing other things in the woods in Wisconsin too, especially with a bad scent and loud deep growls. If you go back to Wisconsin there is the Ice Age Trail, bike trails and the south west corner was missed by the last glaciers and have bluffs, ravines and nice valleys.
Last year after living on the Chequamegon bay for 40 years we moved to Bandon Oregon. So it was very nice to see you video of Sioux river beach and Birch grove campground. Most likely a bear sent that set Roodle off, but could have been wolf or coyote also. I wish I knew you were going there as I could have told you lots of places to stay for free. When I was younger I kayaked around all the islands, They I sailed around them and then motor boated around them as I got older. I miss the summers there. it is one of the nicer places in the lower 48. Thanks for sharing!
Glad you got a nice calm day to discover the Apostles. Come back and explore more intimately when you can. Some of the best photos Ive ever taken were on a boat at Devils just before sunrise. It's incredible.
Wow! That looked incredible. We saw some of the islands from shore and a hiker told us to come out during winter and snowshoe or snowmobile to the caves. Something else to toss in the ol' bucket list.
Devil's Island looked like a fantastic place! Those rocks! I'm glad you trusted Roodle's instincts. Roodle has been in bear country before, but has not acted like that, right? What about wolves? It would be my guess that wolf scent would be scarier to him than bear. Are there wolverines up there?
+SnowbirdLady 72 we’ve been in bear country a lot! We think it was wolves…. Some locals we talked to said there are a lot in the area! I think he would be smart enough to figure out not to mess with the big dogs! 🐺
their instincts are amazing and Roodle is a smart and travele xperienced boy! It makes me happy to see what good care you take with him too. Dog lover here.... @@oneadVANtureatatime
So glad you left that one campground. It did look beautiful, but its always wise to follow your dogs instincts. They can pick up on things we would never sense. We were at one place like that in North Idaho, and found a perfect spot. But our dog acted just like that. We moved. We later found out from a local ranger that a mommy grizzly bear & cub were frequenting the area and had been in that exact site. Could have been very dangerous.
The Apostle Islands remind me a lot of Pictured Rocks, I wonder if it's the same kind of rock. Keep the good stuff coming guys and give Roodle a treat for me.
Have you guys thought about using a trail camera outside your van during the night or day? Might shed some light unseen visitors. I love exploring Wisconsin, have fun.
+Michele Elliott we have a cheap one! I don’t use it because by the time it starts recording I usually only get the butt of whatever is walking by. You need a good one that starts recording FAST! I also learned that maybe I don’t want to know what’s walking around in the dark😂😂😂😂 ignorance is bliss!
Wonder if there could have been a cougar around the one camp site that Roodle didn't like? They are in the UP and there has been an increase in cougar sightings in WI. The Apostle Islands look beautiful. Not sure I'd want to kayak in and out of those sandstone cliff caves though. I think it was around July, 2022 that a huge section of sandstone cliffs came crashing down into the water. I'm with you Carrie - have hot tub, will soak. Stay well & safe travels!
OMG you guys my old stomping grounds. Had boats for years on Superior and before that trailered the 25 foot family cruiser up there. I have had my 25 footer in some of those sea caves. Must be a calm day like you had. They happen but many days it is so rough you don't want to be at those caves as that is open lake side. I slipped a boat in Bayfield for around a decade. Next time you are in Duluth cross the bridge to Superior and go to the Anchor Bar. The walls and ceiling are covered with nautical stuff. It is a site to see. The bacon cheese burger and fries are very good too. They have gone a little bit yuppie as they have a patio now and the burgers are a little leaner. Back in the day the juices just ran out of the burgers. I have taken and told so many people about stopping at that bar I should get a commission. I remember the first time I took my Son there and last year I had the pleasure of taking my Grandson there. It was his first time there. He was a freshman at college up there so I went up to see him and we had lunch. He has taken some of his friends there too. If you really want an adventure take the tour boat and go to Isle Royale. People hike the island and it is like 45 miles long. Best shipwreck diving in the world. Have done those wrecks many times and what great memories. Dogs are strictly forbidden so not sure how you would go. Anyway thanks for the video and all the great memories it brings back. One last thing, I would be tied up at the dock where the people were in line and while they were waiting I would put the song The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald on my tape player for the people waiting. One rough day the Captain of the tour boat asked me to turn it off as the passengers might get nervous. I complied. There is a reason that lake has all those shipwrecks.
In winter if Superior ices over you can walk out to the ice caves. Loved it. Lake can be rough tho for kayaks. Loved Duluth and Superior too. They built town halls with very old rock from Superior area. Brownstone. Did you go to Big top Chautauqua for the program riding the wind? talks about bayfield's history and has lots of songs, one of my favorites is about the lighthouses. Can find on you tube.
They recently introduced moose and elk I think to Northern Wisconsin. Wolves are all the way down to Wisconsin dells area. Bobcat family seen recently north edge of Madison. Lots of them south of Stevens Point as there is alot if sandy land base middle of Wisconsin. Enjoy.
