This might be a random comment..... But thank you for making me feel less crazy for not wanting to travel. I remember in one of your older videos, you said you didn't care for it, and that you prefer to be home. That's exactly how I feel! But in todays society, if you say you're not really into travel, people think you're crazy. Maybe I am, but thank you for validating my feelings! Signed ~ a huge fan

I’ve left plants alone for close to 2 weeks, the best tip I have is to put smaller plants in clear storage boxes and move them closer to the window. That way they stay moist and humid but also get some sun light.

Oh, leaving plants behind is always so stressful. And it’s so difficult to find someone who could look after them well. Don't water too much or too little and so on 😩
It’s good when you know how to help that your plants need in reanimation. 👍🏻

I wouldn’t worry too much about your variegated frydek, Alocasias can go through periods of dormancy. I’ve had it happen before, I just cut the limp leaves off and gave it the same care and it grew back looking much better actually 😂 so that might be what’s happening with yours!

I’ve never kept a variegated Micans, but I know that my other philodendron hederaceum varieties will sort of “revert” for 2-3 leaves after I take cuttings, my Brazil usually puts out a few totally or almost totally green leaves, and my neon will put out a few darker green leaves, hopefully your variegated one is just doing something like that

I don’t remember if you switched your warscewiczii into a self watering pot. If you haven’t, make that switch. They absolutely love them. At least mine does. I also keep it treated for spider mites constantly. I’ve noticed I don’t see the spider mites too well on that plant. Maybe it’s the light fuzz that is the issue for me.

The longest that I have left my plants is 10 days. For my extra thirsty plants, I poke a hole in the lid of a bottle and invert it into the pot. I haven't found other methods to work. I created an impromptu terrarium for some of my plants and came back to rotten plants. I've also found that I can't trust friends to water my plants. Maybe if I left a strict schedule for them it wouldn't be so bad.

If calathea warscewiczii doesn't end up working out for you, I recommend the calathea zebrina. Super velvety and still has the same coloring in the leaves except the pretty purple backs. Also grows pretty fast too c:

I left my plants for 16 days in May. We decided to have our post office hold our mail and skip a house sitter. Watered them well before leaving. Closed the house up. When I came back they were all fine. Some had new growth! They lived off each other’s transpiration and did great. I have about 150 plants. I will probably never use a house sitter again. 😂

Hey Fern glad to see all is good on the most part. I usually do the same as you with my soil plants. But I’ve been transitioning most of my collection to semi hydro so that when I go away I just top up the reservoirs, dowse the moss poles and partially close the shutters on all windows so that there is enough light but no direct sun coming in. I find they are usually more resilient than we give them credit for.
I never ask a friend or family member to do my indoor plants. But I occasionally ask my mum or bro to water my outdoor garden once a week if it gets too hot. 😅

I went away with my family for 3 weeks but it was in autumn,I had my daughter stay over but she’s not into plants, but I gave her one job to do,that to water my moss poles, which she did as I wrote down the instructions on paper, and my planty son come once a week to check up on all the rest. I tried really hard not to worry about them whilst on holiday as it would have taken the fun out of enjoying my break!
Had all the grow lights on timers before we left, that helps a lot to whoever was house sitting.
I’m amazed at how good your plants did on their own! I do hope you got to relax while you were away, but now there’s lots of watering, hope you make a video on that! 😅

I left my plants for 3 weeks last month. Nobody watered it, no self-watering system set up. I live in the Northeast. 2 days before I left, I drenched my plants and I moved most of them away from South/West facing windows, but not too far so they could still get natural light. I left the windows slightly open for ventilation. Plants did just fine and I saw some growth. They seem to enjoy being left alone and strut their stuff.

I will travel soon for nearly 3 weeks, it´s always a bit nerve racking. So far they have always been ok with out a plant sitter, just with some preparations. I move more and more plants into pon and self-watering pots which makes it way easier for vacations.
My preparations depend on the duration, plant, medium and weather of course, but it includes: watering right before I go / filling up the reservoir or using a bigger bucket as reservoir if needed / moving away from the window or closing sheer curtain / grouping together for added humidity, maybe putting a few water glasses in between / putting in clear boxes or covering with clear bag(not too much watering then) / wrapping mosspole with clingfilm or covering the whole thing+plant with clear plastic bag

I'd probably have someone check on them if I leave for a longer time. For your reverting micans, would the variegation come back if you put it in higher light? I also adjusted the timers on my lights to only be on 6 hours a day. I also had my roommate to keep the moss poles damp. They did pretty well except for the thrips infestation that i discovered when I got back from my last trip lol

I live in southern Indiana which is midwest US. We had a cold front come through a couple of days ago and there was talk about potential night time lows in the upper 40s. I decided that I didn't want to risk my plants especially my tropicals so I got them moved in for the season. It ended up not dropping below the lower 50s but I'm glad I went ahead and got them inside. I don't want my tropicals to be triggered to go dormant or stunt growth and ultimately, they probably wouldn't have benefited much from staying out longer so it's fine. I've only had to leave my plants once since starting a plant collection (I just don't travel much...I'm a home body like yourself and financially our family just hasn't been able to afford annual vacations)...anywho, I just made sure that I watered everything right before we left, I moved some plants to my dining room table which gets tree filtered east and north light and I closed the curtains in my living room, pulled some back from other direct light windows and I took a handfull of small plants that were more vulnerable if under watered to a friend ( they all literally fit on a tray which I took to her). I was gone for eight days and only lost one of the smaller ones that my friend kept and honestly, that one was already on the struggle bus. Good luck getting everybody back on track and rehabbed!

I actually don't! I would love to try out a maidenhair again though... I had one years ago and it was so beautiful.

I moved my whole collection(mix of Hoya, sanseveria, philo, syngonium prob 60-70ish plants) from Georgia to Washington majority were in my husbands trunk of car and it was 2 weeks on the road in winter. And I didn’t lose any!! Shows how resilient they CAN be.
But I also just went on vacation and had opened my spag moss prop box to check on them. I LEFT THE LID OPEN!!! 6 days. Moss was bone dry. Rewet it. But don’t have any hopes for the props in there 🤦🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️

@@Anthony-fe7we I boxed all the plants up so they didn’t have much wiggle room to tip. Since it was winter I bought those heat packs people use for shipping and activated those at night and bought one of those silver emergency hypothermia sheets. And draped over the plants. It seemed to keep them warm. Coldest temp we hit was 35. at stops I’d open the trunk and let them breathe and see some light. About mid way through the trip I gave everyone a small sip of water. I had no issues! I lost a couple leaves. But that’s it
