Hey Jarod an idea for u. Not every laptop has good thermal paste application which seems to be the issue here. What u can do is use a thermal camera and check how much heat spread along the cooling system. Too much red on the cpu compared to other laptop may indicate bad paste as it cant easily pull out heat due to bad application.

@Ahmad exactly what I thought but his configuration had 3070 with tgp of 100watts but i asked for 3060 with tgp of same 100 watts this can show some effect on battery performance and probably gaming too.
Ryzen die is super small and power dense so when you couple that with a thin, not very smooth, not very high clamping force cold plate that runs only 2 small shared heat pipes to the heatsink, and bad thermal paste, it is no wonder it has some thermal transfer issues. Even on desktop with water cooling ryzen 5000 does not run very cool.
@@edward3709 I don't know about that. I think the ryzen 5000 laptops are using a refined version tsmc 7 mm because the performance on battery is dramatically higher than Intel's while also maintaining an almost 1.7 x battery life
What a nice numbers and performance review for both of these laptops. We all know that intel is really up to the competition of getting ahead from AMD because intel doesn't want to disappoint its own loyal customers in the other hand we also know that AMD loyal customer will defenately stick on using AMD ryzen on their CPU because of its little changes and also considering price differences. I am not in using them both but as what I can see intel trully ahead now but budget gaming laptop is more the best and beast at all🥰
I am still a bit baffled by one thing that seems to be consistent throughout all the reviewers: Intel and AMD, when set to the same power-limit, seems to draw the same amount of power, the Intel-laptops are often also lower in idle-powerdraw, yet with the same battery-size the AMD-laptops universally last longer. Is there a problem that Intel is running the cores higher than needed during idle/low-load, like downclocking 4 but letting one run high?
I recently ordered the Lenovo 7 Gen 6 with a 5900x, 32 gigs of ram, 3080, 1 Tb ssd, and the shipping date was this November. If you need a laptop for this school year, I recommend not customizing thr laptop and getting a pre-built model. I needed the laptop for school, so I decided to order the 11980hk with all the same specs except for a 2 terabyte SSD, thunderbolt ports, and of course the PCIE Gen 4. I would love to see you do a review on this model, especially since the intel model is more readily available for those of us in the U.S. Maybe a 5900x vs 11980hk comparing thermals, performance, and battery life. Love the reviews Jarrod! Keep it up :) Ordered the intel a day ago, and it already shipped (will arrive this Thursday).
probably means that more power is going into actual computing power so its more efficient but I don't see how considering the battery life loss against ryzen and the fact that its produced in a bigger 10nm vs 7nm process
@@zphre7548 No man. There's a thing called conservation of energy. So no matter how efficient a processor is, all the power it draws should be given out in the form of heat, sound etc. (sorry for being nerdy.)
@@generalginger7804 right but the heat would be spread throughout the computer, still leaving behind a massive portion right away at the cpu (which is what is shown as the temp on msi afterburner) and in this case the intel version gives off less heat initially
I get around 10000 points in Cinebench R23 with a Legion 5 with the same 5600H in performance mode (max TDP of 66W for a few seconds and then goes down to 56W), so I think your laptop is just either hard locked to 45W or there's some other kind of throttling going on (I've never been able to hit 90C on the hotspot even running Prime95 for hours).
in my experience Nitro 5 has always struggled with thermals. I own a 2018 Nitro 5, and it has the worst thermals with same specs on laptops from Lenovo and HP Only Dell manages to heat up more
@@adityanayak6327 You must be mistaken. I've owned two renditions of the Nitro 5 chassis (cir. 2020,2021) both with Ryzen CPUs. The thermals on either generation are excellent. This is without any modification to thermal pastez etc) simple as is out of the box.... The Acer Nitro 5 thermals when equipped with a Ryzen CPU are nothing short of excellent.
Thanks for the great reviews J! A few days ago I pulled the trigger on the Nitro 5 Ryzen 5 5600H RTX 3060 for just $600 at Walmart and upgraded the memory to 32GB CL22 in dual channel Samsung's x8 AA chips for another $70. It made a huge difference in term of performance!
Are these nitro 5 models brand new? Nitro 5 is notorious for dust buildup where the fan and heatsink contact even after a month of use. Mine(Ryzen) had a thin layer of dust blocking a fair bit of airflow(Trust me it's not easily diagnosable, I shined a bright flashlight on my fan to see if the lights can pass through the heatsink to the other side). I'm pretty skeptic about this test, as the readings don't make sense if the cooling system is same. And that 89 degree temp is the throttling temp I've experienced. Edit : And also I dropped a whopping 15 to 17 degrees C in the process.
15:32 That is exactly the opposite of reality. With a slower GPU, the CPU matters _less,_ not more, because the GPU is the bottleneck under more circumstances (or maybe even all).
Hi Jarrod, Can you please make a video comparing the i9-11900H and Ryzen 9 5900HX? I haven't seen any good video of the comparison yet and it is much needed. Thanks in advance.
Can you tell some good points in choosing a 14 inch vs a 15.6 inch or 16 inch laptop? At similar prices you find Zephyrus G14 or Asus ROG Strix G15 or Lenovo Legion 5 (Pro, with 16"), with similar configurations. The desktop is not an option anymore, so going from there to a laptop, how should we choose? For everyday use, Internet navigation, movies, photo and very light 4K video editing. The power is not a problem with these laptops, but having a small screen and portability of the 14", or the excellent screen of Legion 5Pro but a big size and heavy, especially if from time to time would mean going out with it?
So basically thanks to ryzen now intel i5 cpu has 6 cores and offers adequate performance for gaming. I personally am happy that now mid range laptops provide 6 cores 12 threads because this is what makes your devices last longer.
I don't know about that. I think the ryzen 5000 laptops are using a refined version tsmc 7 mm because the performance on battery is dramatically higher than Intel's while also maintaining an almost 1.7 x battery life

My friend purchased a day-to-day laptop powered by the i5 1135G7 (no discrete GPU), and I purchased a 'gaming laptop' with a Ryzen 5 4600H + GTX 1650 GDDR6. The difference in our battery life is appalling. He gets 2-3 hours maximum, whereas mine pushes the 5 hour boundary. Not sure if it has to do with CPU or make (Dell and HP, respectively). Our day-to-day workloads are exactly the same (classes, videos, essays, etc.)
There were cases when companies use the exactly same design for intel and AMD, and that means that the mount pressure and heatsink design weren't adequate to one or another. I think this was what happened there. Try opening the heatsink and see if thy are exactly the same despite the differences in surface area
So I was looking for a video comparison between the i5 11400H and the R5 and damn this video is great. I'm actually planning to buy a gaming laptop soon. I have one on sight which is a Lenovo IdeaPad Gaming 3, R5 5600H, 8GB RAM, RTX 3050 TI and 256GB SSD @ $650. Do you recommend it, is it a good deal/purchase?
I don't know about that. I think the ryzen 5000 laptops are using a refined version tsmc 7 mm because the performance on battery is dramatically higher than Intel's while also maintaining an almost 1.7 x battery life
Which one is worth it? 11th Generation Intel® Core™ i5-11400H (12MB Cache, up to 4.5 GHz, 6 cores) vs AMD Ryzen™ 7 5800H 8-core/16-thread Mobile Processor. Thanks
5600h is preferred when ur priority is processor but 4600h is preferred for top notch gaming, if u are buying the laptop for editing and stuffs go for 5600h
If both are equal, i would choose intel just because of I've been using it long time and never disappointed, amd laptop i had often faced overheating issues.
Wait if the intel cpu is using way more power... is there a difference in cooling? intel laptops even of the same design often get a heatpipe or 2 more than their AMD counterparts. something is up with them temps. if the AMD was using more power I would chop that up to efficiency but its not that laptop just doing its job keeping the processor cool
Intel's 10nm has less heat accumulation problem than AMD's 7nm so it's easier to cool. This issue is even bigger on PC as some 240 AIO can handle a 250w i9 but barely cools a 160w r9. Since Intel chips can be fed with more juice under the same cooling solution, while many people say "but intel uses more power", there's a legit advantage on the intel side in terms of pure performance regarding this specific i5.
Hey Jarrod, when you do a battery comparison. If a screen has high refresh rate do you leave it at the high refresh rate (144 Hz, 240 Hzetc) or do you bring it down to 60 Hz to save battery life?
The performances were pretty much similar on power, but I guess if one is getting a laptop then it makes more sense to go with AMD since the performance dip on the battery is negligible, unlike intel where performance drops in productivity were almost 50%.
But bro its not recommended to be gaming on battery as its decreases the battery life. The people who bought these laptop will obviously use it on AC power

Conclusion: Intel was running cooler than AMD, and the gap widens when undervolting, while performing 3% faster in games. AMD has better battery life and performance on battery.
@@abhigyandatta13 The point I am getting at is this. My laptop had full undervolting support with Intel XTU when I bought it. Was able to get really nice low temps and maintain my turbo clocks indefinitely. At a certain point, due to plundervolt. Intel decided to lock me out of undervolting through firmware and OS updates. That makes me question if ANY Intel laptop I purchase in the future can be locked out of undervolting at a future date.
@@abhigyandatta13 Do you get what I am saying? Basically you can buy an 11th gen Intel laptop today and in 2 years some other security flaw may be discovered in the hardware. Followed by Intel locking you out of undervolting. That's exactly what happened to me, except it was a year after I purchased my laptop, and that is what really left a bitter taste in my mouth.
@@abhigyandatta13 It doesn't mean I wouldn't buy Intel again. It just means that I only care about stock results from here on out; because undervolting is not something I am sure Intel will continue to support.
The tables have sure turned this year. AMD went from killing Intel in the thermal department with 4000 vs 10th Gen to now somehow running hotter even with a smaller manufacturing process.
The 4000 series was also Zen2 at the exact same 7nm. Zen3 had a 20% better performance gain, so yeah, more transistors doing more work, creates more heat. Intel also is running their newer 10nm superfinfet node.
They're kinda back at where they are. Although Intel is power hungry while still relatively cooler while Amd is power efficient but runs hotter in this laptop. I think you couldn't go wrong either way of the two this time
Do you think limiting CPU freq. or lower proc.power.state to 95-90-80% etc. when also using Gigabyte Control Center(Power Saving Mode/Perform.Mode etc.) can cause incompatibilty? I am with Ryzen 5 5600H Laptop and I had a lot of freezes in win 11 when I started tweaking those stuff. Now I preinstailled win 10 and I got a freeze again, and the only thing I did was change stuff in power settings - set a 3300mhz limit and lower power.proc.state to 95%; Is it possible that the CPU needs that power and temp and freezes, because I limit it?

Ryzen die is super small and power dense so when you couple that with a thin, not very smooth, not very high clamping force cold plate that runs only 2 small shared heat pipes to the heatsink, and bad thermal paste, it is no wonder it has some thermal transfer issues. Even on desktop with water cooling ryzen 5000 does not run very cool.
Intel 10nm is a roughly equivalent process node as tsmc 7nm, so both the intel and amd dies should be similarly small and power dense
Amd on mobile is bottlenecked by thermal with better cooling and more space it could be a huge difference

Could be that smaller core are used for Ryzen while on battery while Intel are using the Big Core when on battery as you said.
I recently ordered the Lenovo 7 Gen 6 with a 5900x, 32 gigs of ram, 3080, 1 Tb ssd, and the shipping date was this November.

Both brand new with the same amount of use.
15:32 That is exactly the opposite of reality. With a slower GPU, the CPU matters _less,_ not more, because the GPU is the bottleneck under more circumstances (or maybe even all).

The power is not a problem with these laptops, but having a small screen and portability of the 14", or the excellent screen of Legion 5Pro but a big size and heavy, especially if from time to time would mean going out with it?
so which did you eventually choose?
very good. i want to see this for the Asus Pro DUO intel vs ryzen versions.
So basically thanks to ryzen now intel i5 cpu has 6 cores and offers adequate performance for gaming. I personally am happy that now mid range laptops provide 6 cores 12 threads because this is what makes your devices last longer.

Given the price difference which one of these two configurations would you pick:
Lenovo Legion 5 15ITH6 i5-11400H 32GB 512SSD RTX3050Ti - US $1 072
or
Lenovo Legion 5 15ACH6 R5 5600H 32GB 512SSD RTX3050 - US $978
Not sure if Thunderbolt 4 is worth paying the difference?
can you tell how much power the cpu hits during gaming or cpu intensive work loads? Is it way above 45W tdp?
how do you use cpu with no power limit? isnt it limited to 45w?

if it was 1650 or 1660 GPU in those rigs paired with those CPUs... what would be the CPU performance difference for both?

If both are equal, i would choose intel just because of I've been using it long time and never disappointed, amd laptop i had often faced overheating issues.
Man, You're my hero!! I was thinking wich one to buy. This is really helpful.
Glad I could help!
Do they both have a same webcam model? Or is it different?

Do you think that in 2022 we should be looking for rtx3050 or gtx1650 looking on a budget gaming laptop to use it at least 3 or 4 years?
Hey Jarrod, when you do a battery comparison. If a screen has high refresh rate do you leave it at the high refresh rate (144 Hz, 240 Hzetc) or do you bring it down to 60 Hz to save battery life?
i think for comparisons the important point is to have a fair comparison in this case both screens are 144hz and leaving them at that is fair.
The performances were pretty much similar on power, but I guess if one is getting a laptop then it makes more sense to go with AMD since the performance dip on the battery is negligible, unlike intel where performance drops in productivity were almost 50%.

The tables have sure turned this year. AMD went from killing Intel in the thermal department with 4000 vs 10th Gen to now somehow running hotter even with a smaller manufacturing process.
