Thank you so much, Peter! I live in northern Florida in the USA, and our nursery juniper varieties are mostly Grey Owl, Parsoni, Procumbens Nana, and Blue Rug. The largest, most vigorous, and most interesting are always the Parsoni and Grey Owl, which are always complex. This video helps a great deal.

Many thanks for this excellent demonstration of turning nursery stock into a very interesting cascading Bonsai. Type of tree that I've come across in garden centres, but considering the number of branches etc. I would shy away from buying due to the level of complexity , you're video gives me the confidence to buy & keep going with the styling until an interesting Bonsai develops. What I love most is the amount of time you give to deciding on the tree front, overall style & the line of the tree to base all the secondary branches off it ... very inspirational !!

Little tip if you go to your nursery at the end of the season they often sell potted plants cheap. I just went myself and picked up 5 different evergreen species and all were 10 bucks each but had a price tags on them ranging from 45-90 dollars each. I like to grab stuff from the local woods too, I try to pull them from places were the tree had to be really tough to survive. Those seem to thrive being transplanted.

My club used to style 1-gallon junipers as small bonsai for sale at festivals. This would be an excellent video to view before a styling session involving all members present. You contradict the notion that one must examine 30 nursery plants to find one decent bonsai. Ha!

So calming watching you create your tree art. What determines the length of the cascade? Is it simply keeping it in proportion with the remainder of the tree? Interesting to see you create gin/jin using two different methods, the first leaving a round branch and the second creating a split style. Thank you for your continued inspiration and enthusiasm.

Yes, "Grey Owl", one of my absolute favorites! I have them for several decades now and even propagate them since about ten, fifteen years or so (heel cuttings). If you want it to grow strongly, you indeed should put it in large pots or simply in your garden. I live in the Netherlands, so in about the same climat zone as Herons.
If treated like a bonsaï, the foliage wil definitely grow more firm in stead of sloppy. Given time, you can hardly distinguish them from Chinese Junipers: perhaps the foliage has a slight touch of blueish green but the difference is certainly not very clear (Itoigawa is clearly very green). When pruned heavily, you might get some juvenile growth. Leave it for a while and that will disappear. Backbudding goes very easily.
I also experienced that it is not fussy at all about the soil but it should be - of course - well drained. Strangely enough, it can withstand drought very well but these little trees like enough water nevertheless! It is my experience that they also like to be misted: I do that every day (with rainwater). I don't know but perhaps that's the reason why my Grey Owls are rather green than grey or blue. And indeed, they can be repotted throughout the whole year but early spring is the most safe.
Perhaps a little tip: when kept and treated as a bonsaï, add a little bit of charcoal to the soil (I simply crushed some barbecue charcoal - no briquettes - in a little mortar...). It seems to prefer a neutral to slightly basic growing medium although most of our trees prefer a neutral to slightly acidic medium. Feed it well and water it well, lots of sunlight and you're on! It has to be said however - and that goes for all Junipers - that the secundairy wiring (wiring the twigs) is quite a time consuming "job". For us as hobbyïsts, hardly a problem I guess... If you want to wire and bent the trunk, especially the lower part: do it as soon as possible and at a young stage of the development of the tree. Otherwise that could be pretty tough to realize.
Very well suitable for large, small and even very small bonsaï! Thank you for this video, once again, mr Chang! Keep up the good works!

I always value your comments - such a wealth of experience. Most plants are not fussy about soil.

    • @MAMLeers

@@peterchan3100 Thank you mr. Chan, I'm truly honored. And I agree: most trees are not fussy about the soil mixture at all. Even more: there's nothing wrong about Akadama (I use it too as a part of most of my mixtures) but I think, in our specific climate zone, it seems a bit overvalued to be honest. Anyway: overall, drainage seems to be of much more importance than very specific ingredients. I salute you and your team! Making bonsaï accessible to everybody, is really a great and important merit. And that's exactly what you and your team are doing for quite a few years now and for hunderds of thousands of people, all over the world! I think it's great!

Great video! But I sure do wish you would more often focus on the building and care of of some basics like staging and display, work benches, work space/nursery design and layout, choice of tree placement etc. I have limited space in my back yard for 40 trees, each of which are mostly sitting on the ground and have to contend with lots of shade. I have no idea how to approach other options. I have at least one of your books and I don't believe you address these topics even in your book. Please.

Get a square piece of wood, attach 4 pieces of wood, like legs, with screws. Repeat 40 times lol
Honestly though, it really is that simple. You have to get creative and find what works in your space.
For example: I see a space in my area that I want to place a tree/trees. I look at the light and general conditions at approximate heights of the tree(s), then approximate the height of the bench necessary 11:02 to place the trees. After that, it’s up to you.
In my greenhouse (small nursery owner), it’s much the same way. I’m looking for ways to exploit the best conditions that give me the best growth, you HAVE to be creative. UA-cam is great for ideas, but in the end, it comes down to your own creativity and ingenuity. And constantly seeking ultimate simplicity. Cleaner=easier=simpler=better.
