this is just like... hey, I learnt all these chords I never use... how about I put them all in one brilliantly constructed, lyrically clever, witty, but also emotional and personal song, with a sound world that melds perfectly with the subject matter... then put it as the last track on RFS as just a rare tune. Skills.
This is probably John Mayer's most underrated song. But it's also my favorite, and the one that touched my heart the most in the Room of Squares album. It's tone was so separate from the others, so I think this must hold a special meaning for him. When I think of his songs, this for me still ranks the best.
Mayer is always at his best in this setting. Pared back, raw, perfectly imperfect vocals. Any Given Thursday is still one of the best live albums to ever be produced. This sort of style. Still great in 2021.
The chords in this song....damn how did he come up with that progression...maybe I'm just too much of a freaking noob but I find it really impressive..
@@ConradoEv Cannot agree more, strumming is the easiest however the chords progression is hard to figure i mean for me atleast it was a challenge to figure them out but it deserves it.
We also seem to forget to give credit to his bassist in Room For Squares, and in a few other live and studio albums, David LaBruyere. RFS wouldn’t be the album it turned out to be if it wasn’t for DaLa on bass. That dude added sooo much color, flavor, and feel to the entire RFS album. 🔥
Listening to this song live isnt enough. I want to eat it for breakfast lunch and dinner. I want to absorb it. Songs like this are a once and a lifetime gift.
I loooooove this version and his excitement while singing it, but after watching this sooo many times, I just started giggling because it looks like the other guy is smiling and singing his own completely different song and jammin' real hard to it.🤣🤣
I never thought M Night Shyamalan was this great at playing bass too. But seriously, the stuff in its lyrics and melody still hits me to my core. Such a timeless masterpiece. 👌
I remember when he did this song, it was coming up on Christmas, and it really was a great performance. Stairway to Heaven was never released as a single either, there's food for thought
Best song of his best album. Luckily there’s a great tutorial of this song on UA-cam, or else I never learned to play this song. How he composed this... wow.

@@12xenn45 you are clearly not intermediate. You find the strumming pattern complex 😂😂😂
Zeronatty lmao man’s came back to regain his glory
Even if @Zeronatty didn't mean the strumming pattern, 2:16 is no joke......

It's easy to underrate him, when Mayer's other guitarist is Pino blummin' Palladino, but LaBruyere is a killer bass player in his own right.
Sean Hurley is great too now that he plays when Pino isn't around

Amazing chord arrangement.. Still feels like that first time i heard it years ago
This song is brilliant.
An underrated masterpiece.
One of the most beautiful songs I've ever listened to.
#Happy20thAnniversary
i always forget that he used to sing like that.
This man is unfathomably good at guitar.
um neném
the bass makes this so much better not that it wouldn't be amazing already
I never thought M Night Shyamalan was this great at playing bass too. But seriously, the stuff in its lyrics and melody still hits me to my core. Such a timeless masterpiece. 👌
Wow he’s voice is beautiful exactly like the studio version
Great stuff! Complete with vintage Mayer face at 2:58 ;)
tele100 I just can't get enough of mayer's faces XD
love the sound of just acoustic and bass...nothing else!
this song feels like home and love and nostalgia and my god its so fucking beautiful
He reminds me of Brandon Lee. Such beautiful music always. I treat his CD like its totally gold.
A Masterpiece.
The John Mayer Trio was very successful, plus the cd rocked.
woh i didn't know Jimmy Fallon plays bass
More like Chris Kattan imo
keep coming back to this
Beautiful. I love how he actually says Feb-RU-ary - so unique :)

Not only a great song, but also one of the early UA-cam uploads!
The perfect song for "Cuffin' Season". One of my favorites!
what is cuffin season, care to explain?:(
It is 2021 ....and this this still fucking great
2021, still here..
how does he always manage to sound just as good if not better in his live performances
I really hope JM plays with David L again some day....this dude is the greatest bass player and compliments John
this song feels like a warm blanket on a snowy day
Can we take a moment to appreciate the quality of the 15 year old video(as far as upload time)
Yeah. Most videos from this time look like they were chewed up, digested and shat out.
What a genius. Handsome too!

i wish he was this age now...
Hahah I love how they need a 8x10 bass cabinet to play a duo with an acoustic guitar...
John is mayer is freakin good, david labruyere too, both are incredible
actually John is now playing the style of music that is exactly what he wants to play. room for squares was just his was of getting his foot in the door by playing pop music. if you ever listen to an interview or if you ever listen to his lyrics you would know that
Not entirely true. He always loved blues, but is also a massive pop listener/lover. If you’ve listened to enough interviews of him you will know that.
Conan is tall as hell..
I know that this is an 8-year old comment😅 but yeah he's massive. Being taller than Mayer is not a matter of joke.
Shoulda cast to save on CGI for ant man
Can we make John Mayer

John Mayer ❤️☘️
Been playing guitar for 9 years. Still can't get this song down. How is his thumb so long damn it. Haha
I just play the chords differently
Same notes but different fingers
Gave up on trying to match his thumbilities a long time ago
He has huge hands, the thumb is just proportional to them haha. Yeah, I play it slightly different, no way to replicate some of his shapes
Great song. Poignant lyrics.
La época más feliz de mi vida ... la que se me fue pero quedan los recuerdos y el consuelo de habérselo dedicado a la persona correcta.
awesome bass
Lol!
what a great quality for a 2005 video man

@Boss44221 That's right- didn't he play the Dave Matthews model?
Happy St. Patricks day John Mayer!!
A genius
@rohan316 that bassist really knows how to play with john
The highest rated tab on UG says this has 35 chords?!?!?
We need context here! What's going on in this time period exactly for John to hit it off so hard with this? hahaha
Cameron Mayfield Christmas? Lol
DELA ON BASS!
its so freaken good...
Soon 20 years. 🥃
@Acomb420 He's just adding a tension on the top string that you aren't used to.
Couldn’t find the original comment. Do you remember? (I’m just curious lol)
@Acomb420 I highly doubt it was a flop. It's more of a variation of the C#m chord. John does it a lot. :)
So I just learnt to play the whole song. Problem is, my left hand got decapitated throughout the whole process.
Trying to play this song, hurt my finger so bad … but it worth🥲🥲
Beautiful x100,000 000,000
Last safe day. 😬
Happy St. Pat's day, though.
Absolutely no one in the crowd knew how dirty those chords were.
