      While I was a high school exchange student in the Netherlands, and adapting to their higher level of directness, I had some misunderstandings. The best was being approached, at lunch, by 3 or 4 friendly male classmates - all of whom I had first met 2 weeks ago - when the first thing one of them said (in English) was, "How long are you?". I'm sure the pause that followed must only have been 2-3 seconds, but it felt much longer to me. I was processing just how personal a question that was, but this was a culture where they boys and girls used the same changing room for physical education. Deciding to go along with it, I was in the middle of converting inches to centimetres in my head, when the same guy thought he should re-frame the question, "For example, Pieter-Jans, he is nearly two metres long!". It was then that I reasoned it was less likely that Pieter-Jans worked as an oddity in a travelling German sex circus, and more likely the Dutch used the same word for both horizontal and vertical dimensions. It was a great ice-breaker. :)

      I disagree I had Dutch classmates in the UK and they were very curt to put it lightly. You tried to initiate conversation and they answer that question or give a short response and then continue to speak in Dutch with other Dutchies without even looking or acknowledging your presence. Atleast for me, they were very 'exclusive'. None of the other international *and* UK classmates spoke to them either after *repeated attempts*. Honestly I don't understand why they come to study in diverse countries like the UK if they don't want to interact with atleast the UK people. The Dutch should learn some common courtesy and manners, because at some point it isn't being direct but rather about using that as an excuse to be rude and dismissive.

    • @ChPonsard
      @ChPonsard 4 роки тому +18

      There are definitely cultural differences between Dutch-speaking Belgians and the Dutch.
      Historically Belgians are catholics, and the Dutch protestants, which was a driver in the 19th century for the Belgian independence movement. The Dutch have a relatively long history of self-governance and economic power, while Dutch-speaking Belgians live in a territory that has historically been under the governance of people who didn't speak Dutch.
      Belgium has been on the border of Germanic and Latin culture for ages, and so this nudged Germanic-focused Dutch-speaking Belgians a bit to a more South-European style of doing things. The result is that you can hear the Dutch say of Dutch-speaking Belgians that they are more 'Bourgondic', while Belgians would call the Dutch more 'business-minded'.
      Overall the differences are relatively small though, given that both share an uninterrupted language territory and millenia old intensive trade relations.

      True, back in the days it was the complete opposite. Lunch was the "big" meal of the day and dinner was actually some (soup with) bread slices (for example). The reason why it changed was because of the business. People got longer days at work and couldn't eat a whole meal at work. So they switched it. I have no idea if we are the only one who switched it (because I don't think so XD). Further more, my breakfast and lunch are most of the time the same. Bread. Dinner is a different story. I read some parts of the story and told him I liked it but he would need to improve it because there were a lot of spelling mistakes in it, and the plot didnt add up in my opinion. I also said that it needed to be more original. He didnt really say much after that and then left. Later a common friend texted me that the guy really just wanted some encouragement, and I felt so bad for not understanding

    2:38 directness at it's finest hahaha. To all foreigners don't take it as blunt or rudeness. By researching expats videos i found out our directness can be seen that way, but we just speak our mind honestly. One definition of love is truth, so rather honesty then lying to our neighbours. Of course directness need to have a limit too. We don't find everything okay when people speak their minds.

      @BesteKanaal1 i can totally begrijpen (understand) i was geboren en getogen here (i was born and raised here).
      Now without joking. I understand your vieuw but we find it normal here to ask people if they like certain food. Instead of just making something and being offended if someone eventually doesn't like the food. Logical thinking to me.

      Well there is honesty and there are people being rude or unpolite, I mean if someone was in the kitchen for you, and you don't like the meal you can say it, and will be helpful, just do it in a respectful way. It's not the same saying «I did not like it that much» than saying «I just hate it» I mean personally if I get a bad answer I would tell him/her «great, cook your own food»

    Great video. Im a Dutch woman myself, but I went to see if there were funny video's about us.
    The first I stumbled upon was the Amsterdam Shallow Man, who basically called us ungainly men and warned people to avoid us like the plague, after which his enthusiastic fanbase said; 'They need a good slap in the face, those arrogant loudmouths.'
    Needless to say, *this* video was a very welcome surprise. Well done! You've perfectly captured our shared personality-traits!

    I am Italian and have lived in NL for 30 years. I LOVE all the points raised here about the Dutch. Planning makes life so much easier. I planned meeting my neighbors several months in advance - what's wrong? we were all busy. Italians give far too much importance to food. You loose perspective of priorities in doing so. Direct-ness: I love it. I have so hard time with people who say but don't say, and don't say but say, for example in buy/ sell transactions: these are a nightmare in Italy. "The price? never mind we will discuss that later" why later?

    • @tdsdesa
      @tdsdesa Рік тому

      Points of view, I'm also Italian, lived and studied in the NL and had a Dutch gf for 1.5 years. She was my host in Italy for Christmas and she said to my mom's face how she didn't like the food she prepared because there were not enough veggies in it. And my mom put a LOT of effort to prepare that dinner, she wanted to make her feel welcome. Needless to say my mom was quite mortified. Sometimes dutch directness is just plain rudeness, it doesn't serve any real purpose. I have other examples too.

    • @fabiopunk1661
      @fabiopunk1661 Рік тому

      @@tdsdesa yes, my Italian nature is still there and I can understand as someone may be "offended" by directness. There is no right or wrong, life and traveling shows that people of different countries have just different cultures or education. In China, shopkeepers spit on the floor of his/ her own shops and this is perfectly normal! In other countries, burping in the face of the host after a meal is a sign of appreciation of the food that was offered.

    Well... about lunch : it's true that, when at work, we take a cheese and/or ham sandwich to work However, when someone is really invited to lunch we tend to make more work of it. True, bread may be a key component but also luxury meat, salads (egg-, chickenpesto for instance). Or maybe a warm component. Often soup can be present as lunch-dish...
    The way it is displayed in the video is... not really how I experience it.

      It's like that with feminist cultures... they're independent and believe they can achieve everything themselves... they feel they don't need a man and so are refusing to take anything from them. Essentially, they are "anti-women" that have become men themselves in the process.

      CellGames2006 The Dutch are very similar to the Nordic culture. They all have independent women. Even the Vikings were more egalitarian to their women than their neighbors. While other men seem afraid to lose their masculinity like a bracelet, the Nordics have always done their own thing.

    I was randomly thinking tonight that dating a Dutch man could be a good idea, but then I watched these videos. Not that Dutch men are not charming and lovely, but I'm Canadian, we are almost the direct opposites!
    -The Dutch prefer directness. Canadians are laid-back, but reserved and polite. They will typically beat around the bush and suffer just to spare someone's feelings.
    -The Dutch ride bikes to most places. Canadian winters and the sheer size of the country keep sure that most Canadians exclusively use cars.
    -The Dutch may usually 'go dutch' a.k.a. splitting the bill. Canadians can usually be pretty generous with their money when out. "You want a beer? You want a beer? You want a beer? Four beers, please!".
    -The Dutch value efficiency and planning. Like I said earlier, Canadians are pretty laid-back, they'll usually go, "Yeah, I'm up for whatever. Sure, I'll meet you 5:00ish, 5:30ish..."
    While dating a Dutch man sounds like a pleasant idea to me, I think I should spare the poor man, I think I would drive him crazy!
    At least I'll always be able to see the tulips you Dutch have sent to us since World War 2! I've heard that the Dutch love Canadians, so I really hope that's true.

      Yes, Canadians have a good reputation in NL. After WW II, quite a lot of Dutch girls went to Canada to follow their Canadian liberator/lover. And in recent years, we celebrated the old Canadian heroes who liberated our country. Alas, many of them don not live any more but they will always be seen and treated as heroes in NL
