- Is the Wilson EDC X9S the perfect concealed carry firearm? Lets compare its size to the Glock G19, the Sig P938, and an STI DVC Carry.
Wilson has recently renamed the X9S the SFX9. They are the same pistol with just a new name.
As always, all firearms are safety checked prior to filming.
Skip ahead to 9:00 if you just want to see the size comparison.
Those complaining about cost ..then this gun is not for you. Buy what you like and can afford..I just picked one of these up yesterday. Was going in for a kimber 9mm black ice. Seen this one in the display and it got my eye. So I bought it instead. Do I need 2700 gun...no but did I want one after seeing this one...hell yeah. I could have gotten the kimber and been happy. BUT I bought this Wilson to be ecstatic..life is short
Congrats, and I hope that you enjoy it. I've had zero problems with mine, and probably 2-3 thousand rounds through it at this point.
Great comment!
Layaway is the way to go with these. 175 a month takes the sting off.
I’ve been hoping for more X9s/SFX9 content. There are so few out there reviewing this gun.
Let me know if there's anything else you want to see on it.
I see how flat it shoots in the Wilson Combat videos. Are you able to get similar results managing recoil and muzzle rise? Is it much better than a similar size Glock 26 as far as recoil, accuracy, follow up shots? I have a P365xl and my second hand can barely get any grip on the gun, does the X9S give your support hand enough room to get a good vice grip on the gun? Sorry for the million questions, I’m really interested in this gun but can’t find much info or any near me to hold.
@@victorl6224 I've got a follow up video that goes into the grip. The quick response is that my support hand does fine, although its obviously not as good as a full sized grip.
I don't have a G26 to compare it to, but I have shot them a few times. From memory, the X9s has more room on the frame for 2 and a half fingers than the Glock does.
The recoil is easy enough to manage. I have no problem getting my double taps in the A zone now that I have some rounds through it.
The recoil impulse is much nicer on the X9S than the P938 that I had prior to it. The X9S is nowhere near as snappy, and much more pleasant to shoot even with defensive ammo.
My take on it still hasn't changed; its a great gun IF you want a 1911/2011 type sub-compact. If you're ambivalent about the 1911/2011, you're better off saving 2k, and getting a good striker fired option. This is a carry gun, its plenty good, but I don't see it as a range toy unless you're just fascinated with sub-compacts.
@@athenaproject341 thanks for the response! I made the mistake of buying a Staccato C2, lol, now i love the 1911/2011 trigger feel and want a smaller carry gun. That’s how I ended up at the X9s/SFX9 and you are basically the only channel putting content on it. I look forward to upcoming videos.
I have been looking into purchasing a 2011. I was thinking about saving for the staccato but I saw this review. I have a p320 with a Wilson combat grip and I love it. Really think I am going to go with this pistol. Thanks for the great review
Thank you.
They are both good 2011 type pistols. If you aren't going to be carrying, I would go with the Staccato or another full sized 2011. If you are carrying, I would still recommend the larger 2011 IF you can reasonably comfortably conceal it. The EDC X9S just works very well for me and my concealed carry situation.
And don't get me wrong, it is a great gun. I just think that the smaller pistols are a compromise choice because you need something you can better conceal than a full sized version.
Me too, I'm moving from my daily SIG Legion P938 to the X9s (should receive it tomorrow, cannot wait).
I also carry (many times in summer) the extra light SW M&P340 since it is easiest to conceal and trust.
Love the Legion SIG guns (have a couple) but WC is a step up.
It will take some time to find the "perfect" holster for the X9s, for now I'll probably use the Glock 26 holster (seems to be same size).
Great videos!
Thanks for posting this review. Like you, I also carry my 2011 in the winter and I've recently been carrying a Glock 19 for the summer. I was looking at getting a Wilson Combat to consolidate to one carry throughout the year, first world problems.
Glad you enjoyed it.
I'll have another video up as soon as my holster shows up, hopefully by Friday.
Depending on where you carry, and if you are comfortable concealing the G19, the STI DVC Carry or Staccato C2 may be a good option. They do have quite a bit more capacity than the Wilson. The X9S is certainly a compromise between concealability and capacity.
If you're like me though, and want the 1911/2011 platform in a size similar to the G43, and with more capacity than the P938...this Wilson really does seem like a good option.
Best of luck with your search for the perfect carry piece for you.
I own the 15 rd version. Just purchased the 10 rd. Like yours. It is a durable pistol. You really can’t F’ it up. No grips all frame. 18 rd extendo too. Murrrrrikaaaaa
Great first impressions and I like that you compared it to the Sig 938, my normal pocket pistol. I did cringe every time you clicked to pistols together.
Glad you enjoyed my thoughts on the pistols.
I wouldn't worry much about clicking them together though, they get used much harder and get plenty of wear in training.
My LGS just got one in, and I’m thinking hard about getting it. Thanks for Sharing! 👍👍👍👍
You won't regret it.
I got rid of a Beretta PX4 in favor of my Sig P938 specifically because of width and the ability to pocket carry the 938 with a DeSantis pocket holster. I imagine the SFX9 will have the same issue as with the PX4 and the P938 is probably better in terms of concealment, but man, that Wilson is a beauty.
this was super helpful, thank you
Thank you.
thanks for the review...How has this gun been for you. How does it shoot? Overly snappy or relatively smooth for it's class and price?
I have another video up with a more detailed range report, but to summarize; it is not snappy. The gun shoots like a much larger gun than it is. It is very pleasant, in contrast to most sub-compacts that are very snappy.
At this point, I've got about 800 rounds through it, and have had zero issues. It is my daily carry now. The bottom line: If you want a subcompact 2011 style carry gun, and it fits your budget. Go buy an EDC X9S.
Sure sure I'll have to take your word for it because I can't see how far the 15-round magazine extends The angle and your camera and your hand block any ability to see what you're actually doing with the extended grip.
Have you checked out the new pinky extensions Wilson is selling for $25 for the 10 round magazines?
That trigger pull sounds crisp as fuck 😍
I trust your opinion
I've watched the video where you went to the range first, and then this one. Super cool pistol! Please make a video about the holsters you tried for the X9S and how the experience of carrying it has been. Cheers!
I've got two holsters right now, but am holding off on the video until I receive my third from Red Hill Tactical.
It fits in a holster made for a railed 2011, like the Staccato P. Unfortunately, the first holster was supposed to be made specifically for the X9s, but it is 3/4" longer along the slide than it should be.
The one Im using was purchased specifically for a Staccato P, so it also is a little larger than it needs, but its a good holster.
Once I get one made specifically for the X9S, I'll have a video up. Expect another 3 weeks though.
@@athenaproject341 I'll be here for sure, thanks!
I owned an edc x9 for a while but sold it off as the allure of it just really wore off quick for me. This new edc x9s might be enough to convince me to buy another.
Was there something you disliked about the X9? I have not had any time with one.
If you want a new carry weapon in the 1911/2011 format, the X9S really seems to be a good choice.
@@athenaproject341 Honestly the gun performed flawlessly never had an issue with it. But it was one of those things that I really wanted but once I got it I just got somewhat bored of it. Maybe I overhyped it for myself.
@@athenaproject341 I'm also eyeballing the Nighthawk Counselor also for a nice subcompact carry gun.
@@badmitionpro101 Thanks for the reply, I totally understand that, I've been guilty of overhyping a few guns to myself as well.
@@starrider2352 I haven't had an issue with the shock buffer, and you can typically run without them. Regardless, treat it as you would a recoil spring and replace it regularly, and you shouldn't have any issues.
Hey athena, I have another question. After readying the hammer for a shot, I noticed that you can safety the gun, pull the trigger, and when you drop the safety, the hammer drops. Does yours do that too?
Absolutely not. The safety should prevent the trigger from traveling far enough to drop the sear. More technically it prevents the sear from moving.
Regardless, if you are able to pull the trigger with the safety on, then release the trigger, turn off the safety, and the hammer drops, you have a serious safety issue. Contact Wilson immediately if that is what is occurring.
With the safety on, you should only be able to pull the trigger back enough to take up any pre-travel or slack in the trigger.
@@athenaproject341 the safety prevents the hammer from dropping if it's locked, but if i pull the trigger, let it go, then as i drop the safety without finger on the trigger, the hammer drops.
@@khmergodhobbies Thats a serious safety problem. Give Wilson a call and have them fix it under warranty.
I know this type of issue can occur when people get a little carried away with trigger jobs or fitting a new safety. If memory serves, you were wanting to change from an ambi safety to a single sided one. If you changed it out, did you have that done at the factory, or was that something done with off the shelf parts? Its possible that could have caused the problem.
@@athenaproject341 wilson safeties are only sold and installed by wilson, but I didnt decide to do it yet.
@@athenaproject341 you have no idea how lucky i am not to have gone to the range yet. luckily i always test my pistols in nonconventional ways to see if it functions properly. i could have killed myself or someone.
I bought the EDC X9S two years ago. My major complaint is that the pistol is not reliable shooting defensive rounds! It will shoot about 2 magazines and then start having failure to feed malfunctions!
I initiated a service request about the problem but haven’t heard back. I can clean it thoroughly and get a couple magazines to feed and then it starts malfunctioning! I bought a Sig P365XL and it has yet to malfunction! The expensive Wilson Combat cost around 3 grand including ammo to try to break it in to then find out it can’t be my EDC because I don’t trust it!!!
That has not been my experience. I've put thousands of rounds through mine with zero issues. I can't say that I put a lot of rounds in a single trip, but I have done a handful of 100+ round range trips with mine.
I would contact Wilson and have them make it right if you are having issues. Alternatively, have you tried different defensive rounds? I run 124gr HST. Mine also seemed to like 147gr HST as well, but I have not put nearly as many rounds of that through mine.
@@athenaproject341 I used Winchester ball target ammo and several different high end 115 grain hollow points including Wilson Combat. I have contacted Wilson Combat but still have no resolution, I’m willing to send back to have springs changed and checked.
Although I have no confidence in this high end paper weight at this point.
Additionally, I shoot my 30 year old .357 mag smithy snub nose better than the Wilson Combat!
I notice on your comparison your sig p938 has a stainless guide rod, where did you get yours from😯 ....thank you😀
ssguiderods.com
Good video man
Appreciate it
Hey, What kinda front sight you have ? Green or Red?
It came with a green fiber optic, which you could easily swap the rod to red if you want. I put on an Ameriglow front sight, which is the bright orange dot around tritium.
The rear sight appears to be much taller than the front. How is the sight picture?
The rear sight is cut into the top of the slide a bit, so it looks to be taller than it really is. The sight picture is standard U-notch rear. The notch is a little wider than I prefer, but for a defensive gun it is quicker than a tighter notch, and makes sense.
the barrel fit is amazing when you did the front shop compared to the G19 wow.
It is put together quite well, which should be expected at this price point.
I can't wait to get it to the range and see how it shoots.
Athena Project How many $6,000 full-size 9mm pistols are coming this month?
@@gageiyeylandstalintriesman8421 None.
You have excellent taste in firearms. When things settle down in our country, I'll go back to carrying a svelte, single stack pistol. For now, my Glock 45 puts me at ease; and my Keeper's Concealment holster does a great job concealing the fat, long grip, and balancing the weight of the fully loaded gun. Stay dangerous, my friend.
Thank you, and stay safe.
Hey.
Cool review
What would you recommend p938 or Wilson?
Thank you. I got rid of my P938 and am still carrying the EDC X9S. There's really no comparison unless you're trying to fit a budget.
Have you had Sti staccato? Any thoughts?
@@instylecasesinstylecases7239 Ive got a number of videos up on various STI Staccato models. Prior to the renaming of the company, but the guns are still largely the same. My carry gun prior to the Wilson was the DVC Carry, similar to the Staccato C2 out now.
I prefer the DVC-C, except that I typically want something somewhat more concealable and therefore am using the Wilson.
Athena Project
Thank you
Are the back straps customizable?
No. The grip is a single piece.
can you remove the safety from one side?
You can order it with the safety only one one side. Otherwise, call Wilson up and let them know what you need. They are pretty good about things like that.
@@athenaproject341 is it possible to remove one of the safeties from one side on your own? Was looking at current in stock models.
@@khmergodhobbies You would have to order the single sided safety from Wilson. Then replace it.
@@athenaproject341 okay thank you for responding
How Would you compare it to Glock 26 ????
I don't have a Glock 26 to compare it to, but if you check out the comparisons drop down on the Wilson site, they do an overlay. It is pretty much the same size. I think it is closer to the 43 though.
www.wilsoncombat.com/edc-x9s/
How many $6,000 full-size 9mm pistols are coming this month?
The full sized pistol is in 40 S&W. My 9mm's are significantly less expensive than that.
This dude sounds like a man trying to convince himself that spending 3k on a subcompact carry gun was worth it.
An interesting take...perhaps you should add that it was purchased sight unseen too...it'll make a better story.
Look at my later videos, I made the right decision on buying it.
Gun at 3:10
Go ahead and spend over 3K on a 308 "Super Sniper" as I did. Only be prepared to be ignored by customer service (after multiple emails) when the BCG freezes in the upper and a live (factory ammo) round won't eject. This was after 30 rounds. So...sure...spend the money, then spend a few hundred more on a gunsmith. Looks like values such as integrity...honor...fidelity are noticeably ABSENT at Wilson Combat.
Sorry that you had a bad experience, but that has not been my experience with Wilson. I don't know if they are short staffed, or if things have simply changed. Regardless, I have had zero issues with this pistol. I would just try calling them and talking to a person. I've found them to be very helpful in the past. Hopefully they resolve it for you.
Well, the P938 is only about $700 while the EDC is about $2,700. I have a hard time justifying that extra two grand.
Then this isn't the gun for you. Cost aside, it's a far better firearm. Only you can determine if it's worth the extra money.
I'm pretty sure that I've stated as much in a number of my videos.
@@athenaproject341 it looks better… is that gonna make it shoot better? Lol no
@@athenaproject341 and if you actually do have to use it you can go ahead and kiss it goodbye for a couple months while it sits in an evidence lockup.
@@nickgates4387 Fortunately, I've responded to this garbage comment before. Don't buy a self defense weapon that you aren't willing to loose. If I ever had to use it, and it gets put into evidence, I'll just go buy another one.
@@nickgates4387 Where, in any of my videos, have I suggested that someone should pick a self defense firearm based on how it looks? You should carry what you are proficient with.
Just got one for less than 2k
It may very well be a nice gun, never fired it but the MSRP is $2600+ that's a dumb amount of money for an EDC. If you get into an actual confrontation your 3k dollar every day carry gets confiscated for the ensuing investigation. Said EDC will be in evidence for anywhere from 6 months to well over a year. I've shot hundreds of handguns and it is illogical to have such an expensive EDC. Anyone who purchases such a weapon for EDC has too much money and no common sense. Owning this weapon for EDC is like wearing shoes that cost 2 or 3k every day. Just dumb.
I've commented on this in one of my other videos. I couldn't care less. If its confiscated, and I loose 2k or 3k, at least Im still alive. I honestly don't care about the money in that instance. Ill just go buy another one.
If you aren't comfortable "risking" that much money, then don't do it. I've specifically commented on this before, and I would never push people to spend more than they are comfortable loosing on a gun for CCW.
Price is completely subjective.
