You chose the best storm chaser on UA-cam. He's the best, bar none. He's very down to earth, he takes care to help animals, he plays the guitar, what's not to like? Sprites are colorful flashes above a storm. They all have different colors, and different names.

Pecos Hank is absolutely fantastic! He's such a nice person, and one of the more responsible and safe storm chasers (the one in that video was the riskiest thing he's really done and he said later it was too close and it was reckless), yet gets some of the coolest pictures and videos. He also composes and records pretty much all the music in his videos either with his band or by himself! Basically, Pecos Hank is great and I'm looking forward to the potential of new reactions to him. Cheers from the U.S.

Tornadoes...the bane of my existence. Those of us who have lived through having their home struck by a tornado never forget it. After our home was damaged by the April 3, 1974 tornadoes that struck Huntsville, AL, it took two years to overcome the fear that would overtake me whenever high winds and thunderstorms occurred. I am now 71 and still become fearful when tornado season starts each year. Living in the northern part of Georgia, we are in a direct line for all the storms that come through. In fact, right now we're under a tornado watch and severe storm watch for tonight! Won't be getting much sleep if any at all.

Courtney: "It just goes so quickly"
Me: Not if your in one.
I have lived in north Texas all my life and have been through many tornadoes. At one radio station I worked at as an On-Air-Personality, I was on call 24/7 to come in and work hand-in-hand with local meteorologists to keep an eye on local radar and receive information from the National Weather Service (NWS) and local ground spotters and storm chasers (via ham radio) to keep the public informed of local weather events. I have ho idea how many times I came close to being hit by lighting, swept off the road by high winds and even have to use evasive action to avoid going straight into the path of a tornado. All of those experiences have left me with a great level of respect for the amount of power that nature can release, and at the same time keep level headed and calm during these events, Take care, Courtney!

@@birdernate I'm a few months late, but best advice is to have as many contact points with the ground as you can. Feet, arms, hands, anything. It allows for the lightning to pass through you faster so you won't take as much of a hit from them. Now the thunder...- Well, prepare for either some fractures, bruises, or some hearing problems, lmao.

Lived in Nebraska my whole life, you get to see some awesome looking storms including tornadoes. We usually sit on the back porch and watch them go by. My town hasn't actually been hit by one since 1951, but they usually pass by about a few miles to the east and you can get a good view if it's not too dark.

Pecos (pay-kus or pay-kose) Hank is a really fun Storm Chaser to watch.
The true irony of having endless stretches of road at your disposal with nothing at all around for hundreds of miles, EXCEPT the road maintenance crews with their dreaded hand held STOP signs.
And Kansas, the only state you can get pulled over in the same night, for your license plate light first being too dim, then the next town, your license plate light is too bright. No joke, it happened to me.

Hands down the best out there not only for the above mentioned but also for the quality of his cinematography.. I have lived in the heart of tornado alley (Oklahoma) for 30 years and the spring storms are amazing. Night before last I spent 2 hours underground because tornado after tornado just kept coming through. The town of Sulphur that is 15 min south was hit hard that night. Leveling Historic downtown. Hank is the shiz and you picked onw of the best to watch and react to his craft. Also unless he has changed, he always chases alone.

I am a student currently studying Atmospheric Sciences (fancy term for Meteorology) so I appreciate the timing of this video as the Southeastern United States just had a tornado outbreak from March 16th-18th, 2021. While it’s too early to tell how many actual tornadoes touched down, 99 tornado warnings and 206 severe thunderstorm warnings were issued over the course of the last 3 days. Weather is fascinating!

Sprites are a high altitude lightning phenomenon that occurs up in the mesosphere over large storms and high energy positive lightning strikes. Ionized discharges shoot upwards, and due to the reduced air pressure at that high of an altitude, the discharges appear pink or reddish. It’s around the same altitudes that red auroras occur due to high energy solar particles punching deep into the upper atmosphere. Above that, auroras are more greenish in color because the air is so thin. Air fluoresces at different colors depending on pressure. Here at low altitude/high troposphere pressures, it produces a combination of blue and red, creating violet most of the time. There are conditions that can lead to lightning of different colors though.

Let me explain how the Enhanced Fujita scale rates tornadoes. the orignal Fujita scale was like the hurricane categories, rating them on the size of the storm. F1 being the smallest, F5 being the largest. The Enhanced Fujita scale changed how they are rated. EF scale doesn't care how big the storm is, it is based on damage. So a mile wide twister in a rural area and since the damage is minimal it will be rated as an EF1, formerly an F5. If a former F1 tornado hits a town it can be rated as high as EF5, depending on the damage done.

If it weren't for that giant structure next to us, we'd have been goners. The trailer park a mile away was destroyed, people died, businesses were destroyed all around us. Now that I remember a whole Apt complex behind us was also destroyed. I hope I don't dream about tornadoes tonight or experience one tomorrow.

When I was very young (like maybe 3 or 4 yo) in New Mexico, I was playing outside. A small tornado called a dust devil, that wasn't there one second was heading straight for me in the next. Scared the hell out of me, I ran into the house and it shook the whole house and rattled all the windows. My parents just wrote off my fear as something childish. That's on my list of things, at 69-years-old, I still find unforgivable.
My two, under-five daughters went through a destructive earthquake in California, my wife and I were totally there for them. It took weeks for them to not be afraid if even a large truck drove by.

Growing up in Amarillo, Texas I saw lots of pics of tornadoes in the local paper. My dad showed me one in 1957. Silverton, Texas had a tornado the previous day. Back in 1957 the milkman came to your porch long before you got up in the morning and left the milk you ordered days before! After he had left this one house a tornado hit before sunrise. Someone took a picture of the destruction and here is what it looked like. The four cement steps and porch were not moved. The gallon of milk left on the porch was not moved. Nothing else was in the picture. There was no debris, there was nothing else to indicate that a house ever existed there at all.

A tornado is a rotating column of air. The bottom can be clear on the ground giving the impression that it hasn’t touched down. You can tell by debris that’s being picked up.
A tornado is rated on the Fujita Scale. It ranges from F zero to F five. It’s rating is determined by the destruction it causes
May is usually the most active month for tornadoes, although they have occurred in The winter.
Moore OK is ground zero for tornadoes with weather patterns being very conducive for tornadoes.

Sorry for the super long comment........
Oh yeah, communication between storm chasers, police, fire, medical, and the community is very much the key for no fatalities, or injuries.

Yeah, North Americans have a warning in their phones, radios, and TVs for severe weather like flooding, tornadoes, hurricanes, etc. You heard the phone warning. Which is very distinctive.

Wait wait wait, all I heard was that you don't have fireflies in New Zealand... EXCUSE ME!? Fireflies are the best! Running around as a child and trying and successfully catching one is like literal magic! Literally holding light in your hands! You gotta come to the US just so that you can go firefly hunting at least once 🥰
Anyways, back on topic. Pecos Hank is such an amazing storm chaser. The footage he catches is always so incredible. I especially liked his 2021 tornadoes video because it focused on showing how beautiful tornadoes can be when not on a path of destruction. Tornadoes are dangerous forces of nature, true. But when they're just left on their own in an empty field? There are some tornadoes that can be incredibly beautiful to watch.
Also, Pecos Hank's respect for nature is so admirable. A friend to both weather and animals!

We had a tornado in early 2020 roll through the commercial district and destroy the mall right in the middle of the busiest time of day. We were in lock down at the time, though. I heard someone estimate there could have been 100's dead at the mall, minimum, if we weren't in lock down, but as it was, not one person got hurt that day. There was a guy invited to the Ellen show because he rushed out of a store and helped two women who were getting picked up by the wind and got them inside. The mall still hasn't been rebuilt over 2 years later.

Tornado chasing is fun but VERY dangerous at night. I've lived in the Midwest all my life and went through an EF4 in Omaha in 1975. You could see the path it took because it literally yanked the grass up by the roots. Notice the cell rotates counter clockwise, unlike in New Zealand where they rotate clockwise.

If you enjoyed this you may like the 2020 Atlantic Hurricane Season Animation (By Force Thirteen)
Fun facts about the 2020 hurricane season:
I’ll say this, normal hurricane seasons reach about 10-12 named storms, 30 named storms were in the Atlantic,
the average amount of Hurricanes in a season is less than 10, 12 were in 2020,
an average amount of Major hurricanes is at 1-3, (major hurricanes are categories 3+) in 2020, there were 7 major hurricanes
The major storms were Laura, a high end cat4 hurricane with winds of 155mph (Catagory 5’s are from 157+mph)
Teddy another cat4 with winds of 140mph
Delta was another Catagory 4 with winds f 130mph
Epsilon with winds around 115- 125mph as a cat3 hurricane,
Zeta, with winds around 115mph before making landfall in New Orleans
Eta, a cat4 maybe 5 that hit Nicaragua with winds of 155mph, it then moved back into the Caribbean and restrengthened into a hurricane before smashing Florida
Last is iota, a cat5 with winds of 160mph hitting 10miles north or south from we’re Eta made landfall
Also, the Atlantic uses a naming list that goes alphabetical only skipping 5 letters (those being Q, U, X, Y, and Z) if a naming list is fully used, they go to the Greek alphabet (was only ever used in 2005, and 2020 before being permanently removed which makes me sad since I liked that list a lot...)

Some storms go quickly or at least move slowly. But some twisters will dance on the same place for several minutes. The lateral lightning he shows is the most fascinating to me. You see that all the time around here. Tornados are very rarely seen here in tornado alley. Unless you just go looking for them like these people do. We also have the very tame tornados too. In fact the Fujita Scale zero tornados start at 65mph or about 105km. It is prounced Pay-couse. :-)

More heat doesn't equate to more tornados. You need cold air to clash with warm humid air. The warm air rises over the dry sinking cold slot and if you have the right ingredients as far as upper level vorticity and lower level jet, moisture, heat you will get those monster tornados. Last year being so hot actually hurt the Midwest. Thus many of the chasers didn't have the same luck. Also, the Dixie Alley tornados are really hard to chase because of the trees and terrain which is where most of the tornados ended up.
Pecos is an awesome story teller. His videos are great!

The first time I ever saw fireflies was on my 36th birthday (July 7, 2000). I live in Massachusetts, where we don't have any iridescent fireflies, but I went to visit my aunt and cousin in Virginia. That evening just after the sun set and the dusk was turning into night, the fireflies appeared as if from nowhere blinking all around us low to the ground. It was astonishing! And beautiful!

I love to watch what I call spider lightning, the bolts that crawl across the sky. To me it is natures own fireworks display and is better than anything commercial presented in the U.S. That is my opinion. It truly shows the power of Mother Nature, something beautiful it made by something that could snuff you out in an instant if it chose too.

  • @ZolFox

That was a sprite. It’s like upward shooting lightning in the mesosphere that’s like bright red and only lasts for less than a second, and only visible from a really far distance cuz it comes out of the top of cumulonimbus clouds which are very tall clouds anyway. Which is why they were only discovered to exist like 10-15 years ago. I might be off on some of the details cuz I’m doing this by memory. But they’re really cool. Check out a video on it. Probably not something to focus a reaction video on. Just on your own time :) Btw, greetings from tornado alley, USA.

The Great Plains of The United States is actually an amazing place to live. Our summers are Super Hot 100°F and up is not unheard-of, and our winters are Unbelievably cold. In 2023 we had temperatures of -43°Fahrenheit (actual temp not wind chill). We see extremes all year long. If you enjoy extreme weather this is the place to be. Tornadoes and Thunder Storms in the spring and summer. Blizzards and Thunder Snow in the winter. Thunder Snow is exactly what it sounds like, its a thunderstorm, lightning, thunder, strong winds, the whole bit, but with snow instead of rain.
Freak Ice Storms that start off as rain an then transition into sleet and ice in the Blink of an eye. The entire landscape is frozen solid. Driving becomes treacherous at best, all the way to absolutely dangerous and not possible at worst. Nebraska isn't near as boring as people make it out to be. In fact it can scare you half to death just by being its self.

For those from lands that do not have Tornadoes a bit of information! The destruction from tornadoes is not straight high speed wind. It is the high velocity circular winds that twist and shreds everything in its path, hence their named Twisters! When I lived in Siberia, my Russian friends told me that they do not have tornados, my understanding is some parts of the world do not have the geology or meteorological conditions to generate tornados!
