Great job, both playing and transcribing. Fantastic to see all those cool little fills written out, although when you see it, there's less improvisation there than I thought just on listening. He sticks to the pattern really closely, which is even more impressive in that he makes it sound so free. As do you - really good playing!
@@mateuscortianoschwarz7276 I think Sam Wilkes is hitting a lot more ghost notes, technically making it a faster groove. This is a simplified version of the bass line.
you can really feel the bassline get more and more excited as the song approaches the end - the playing in the solo sections is amazing. very nice work
words can describe what an awesome channel filled with resources for bassist you have, so i'll just leave this here and say: "Keep on keepin it cool Benny!"
Wow, awesome job! And getting to see how it's broken down, it's crazy seeing how it's mostly octaves, fifths, and ghost notes. Just goes to show that the most important part to grooving is a pocket full of rhythm!!
just came across this track the other day and figured i would never be able to work this bass line out but it actually looks easier, or at least less completely impossible now. Great vid and playing thanks!
My friend I love your videos Keep on like this I hope someday tocar como tu, eres un crack en la materia, saludos de un gran amigo desde Ecuador, mis amigos y yo esperamos siempre tus videos bye my friend
Beginner Bass player here stoked to learn from observation 🤟🏽 noticed at 0:48 beat 4 you play an octave above the written D natural - New Subscriber!! Love your work
I'm almost four years late reading your question, but in case you haven't already figured it out - here's the chord progression in the chorus: F#7sus4(no5) - E9sus4(no5) - D#7sus4(no5) - Dmaj7#11(no5) C#m7add11(no5) - Bm7 - F#sus2/A# - D#7sus4(no5) - F#add11/G# - F#add11/E (most of these chords have the F# on top).
Nice stuff! I'm interested in how do start transcribing new songs? Do you slow them down etc? Any tips? I'd like to start writing my own notations in the near future of songs I'd like to train. Also a song request for you to cover: TOP - Attitude Dance
Amazing! Thanks for the request - love everything by TOP so I'll be more than happy to do that one for ya :) As for your question - YES absolutely do it! Transcribing is really great practice for your ear and also your rhythmic sense. It's also a really great way to get inside the head of another bass player. The "right tools" are important - I use the program "Transcribe!" to play back songs while I'm transcribing them. It's a little program that I love, and yes I definitely do slow them down (transcribe can slow down/speed up to any percentage without changing the pitch, and also change pitch without changing the speed) if I get stuck on something or there's a really fast passage. Generally if I'm working at a normal pace I'll just play one bar, and then stop the track, and try to sing (or sing under my breath, etc) the bass part. If I can sing it then I can write it down. If I can't sing it I go back and listen to it again or slow it down etc. Once I can sing it and understand what is happening in the bar I just write it down in Sibelius (I have Sib 7.5). From there I can export the chart as a PDF, or as a movie (for youtube). Then usually I'll start playing the song on the bass and just listen out for any notes that I maybe didn't write properly (some passages only start to make sense when you have a bass on). Hope that helps!
you should have the transcription move to keep up with your playing so that when you go to the next bar it's not a complete surprise, as it is we can't see ahead
Interesting. I wonder about that though - these videos aren't really a sightreading exercise as much as they are an instructional on how to play the tunes - would having the score rush/be de-synched with the music be more of a distraction? I don't know. To actually learn the full tune and read along etc, patrons on my Patreon page get the full PDF charts.
Thank you Franco! Currently PDFs charts are available as one of the perks when you become a Patron of mine. You'd have access to all the charts for all my videos if you sign up there. The link is www.patreon.com/BennyTheBassman
Thanks for the feedback. I've heard that before but I don't see it myself. What browser/system are you using to view the vids, where it gets covered when paused? In the future I'll definitely switch the tabs around to above the video, if that makes it better for everyone.
Sam Wilkes' bass line is without doubt real genius, and you absolutely nail it!
wow. what a creative bassline, was in love with it the first time i heard it
Indeed. It's just so damn funky and perfect. Sam Wilkes the genius.

Thank you 🙏🏾 this was actually more straight forward than I thought
You're welcome! And yeah I agree - it starts out intimidating but a lot of the parts are repetitive.
Nice bass line, but less inventive than most of Tim Lefebvre‘s stuff.
i thought it was way harder too. maybe it's sam wilkes precision in the fast section that hits the most.
@@mateuscortianoschwarz7276 I think Sam Wilkes is hitting a lot more ghost notes, technically making it a faster groove. This is a simplified version of the bass line.
Honestly one of the sickest basslines I have ever heard.... Regardless of genre. Absolutely amazing!

You forgot to rip your shirt off at the end
Drummer‘s part 😁
Thank you so much for transcribing this end boss level of bass music. Damnit, it's hard and so many funky rests in it. You killed it!
Thank you for taking the time and transcribing one of the greats.
What a groove. Props to you for the the transcription, and great playing to boot!

@@BennyTheBassman Helped a ton. Thank you!!
DAMN
Amazing! What octaver were u using? It has an amazing tracking
❤️
Is there an effect on the original bass stem?
damn Benny this is serious
How about chromazone - mike stern? Congrats for your work man!
Thank you! And Love that tune. The Brecker solo...yikes. I'll do it!
Nice! I challenge you with Bread Sandwiches by Bernard Wright.
Ooo that's funky! Thanks!
Great bass track, what effects did you use to get this sound?
Fun
how much of the bridge PU, how much of the neck PU do you use?
I post all my bass settings at the bottom of the description on each of these videos. This one says "pickup knob - neutral".

I looked at some of your uploads and I really like them. If you want to improve your play, my advise to you is, work on your right hand raking.
Please do something by King Crimson or the Grateful Dead
Sure!

Yeah, China Cat Sunflower is a great one
Great man!! Can you send me the sheet? Please 😊

@@BennyTheBassman I'm watching it in the good ol' chrome in pc, but the progress bar gets in the way when it's paused. Awesome video nonetheless.
Thanks again for the info. Makes a lot of sense. I've started putting the music on the top.
Can you not just click on the image when paused to clear the progress bar? That's what I do on chrome @@gltchmanexe4188
Love Tim Lefebvre! Well played fella, he comes up with some sick licks... make sure to check out the album 'Plastic Temptation' if you haven't already
Sam wilkes actually played this track! but Tim Lefebvre is awesome as well!
