I think you guys are a bit off about Barenboim's remarks about 9/11 and Götterdämmerung. I think what he meant was that it was a tragedy that had everyone glued to their TV sets. That is the connection he is making, about the way television and the media have come to mediate history and events. I don't think he was comparing the dramatic end of the opera with the terrorist attack itself. What was prophetic was the fact that people across the world were watching these horrific events on TV.

Barenboim said a lot in saying very little. Tomlinson clarifies 5:44.

I have the 1991-1992 Warner Classics Bayreuther Festspiele Barenboim/Kupfer Der Ring des Nibelungen DVD. I've always wanted to watch it end to end and New Years day 2022 I will fulfill my dream. I've watched Das Rheingold several times and Tomlinson looks extraordinary and sings like a god. The whole cast is fantastic! The sound on this DVD is the best.

I am happy to share my nationality with Barenboim--Argentine. He made a witty remark with that 9/11 comment. We do it everyday, and we don't notice it. Everyday we receive news about lots of horrors on TV, radio, internet, cellphones. We get the latest crime or terrorist atrocity in HD quality, day after day, like a parade of atrocities, like an assembly line of endless mind-shattering haunting horrors of war and delinquency. But what do we do with that? nothing, we just stand still, treating it like another drop in the ocean, we watch the screen unfazed and with a dull look, like those people in the final scene of the production. We even take it as entertainment, and out of our morbid interest we flock to news website when a tragic terrorist attack happens, to see if we can find a HD quality video where every gunshot and every blood drop is heard in outmost quality. We lost our humanity and our compassion for our fellow human beings, we became desensitized. Unfortunately it may be too late for a change, so we can just hope that the next generation bring a change for the best: represented masterfully in the production by the rich boy and the poor girl, holding hands and walking off the stage with a flashlight! all in all, a master production with a master of a conductor, a master of a stage director and a masterfully group of singers (Siegfried Jerusalem is the GOAT!!!!) I could be writing for ages about this production, it's my favorite, but I will stop now.

I know! That was a totally ridiculous remark. 9/11 was an atrocious terrorist act but not the end of the world! And why is it that 9/11 has become the symbol of terror when much worse crimes have been committed in the last hundred years? Bosnia, Rwanda, Hiroshima, and now Iraq (more than 1.5 million killed since the invasion).
