"Store brand Elon Musk" caused me to choke on my dinner. Rich, you're literally killing me man. Keep it up. Also: the moment I got here Rich was talking about fitting something in, classic Rich.
Man your content is interesting and you are easy to listen to, no B.S. and you get to the point without a long drawn out session. Well explained for us newbies just getting into EV's and you also called it a gearbox for us outside of the U.S.A. Subscribed and now an avid follower. Keep it up bud.
After watching a cluster of your more recent videos, all entertaining, it was really nice to watch one so packed full of information. Great safety features overview. Thank you.
I'm one of those who asked about putting the batteries where the gas tank was. Question answered, thanks Uncle Rich! P.S. Seeing Rich's gesture of what two or three inches looks like puts things into a whole new perspective.
You’re incredibly talented and I hope this inspires more enthusiasts to do things like this. I know it’s sad that petrol engines are going away, but it’s exciting to see that this technology is finally being played with and creativity is going to takeover.
Just make sure the 3rd Brake Light is properly sealed on the roof because any bit of rain will get into the hatch and pour all over your battery modules.
Rich, if you're planning to swap batteries at 24h of Lemons, can you mount them lengthwise in the car side-by-side on rails (maybe heavy duty shelf rails from Home Depot)? That way you just slide 1 pack out of the car onto a cart, charge it, and slide it back in next pit stop.
I think I understand something now. When Rich reveals a new idea he doesn't just come out and say, "hey look at what I've got now." He builds up to it so even if he's made a whole entire story he wants to reveal, he starts small. He puts it in a way that's super digestible too. Other UA-camrs just say what's up guys look at what I'm doing now.
Rich, Have you thought of giving a course / talk on what it takes to change a car over to electric? Everything from what to look for when selecting a car to the nitty gritty of actually doing the swap. I have been watching you videos for a while and you give some great tips and show us things that I would never had thought of with respect to doing the conversion. A guide to converting cars to electric if you will. With coved a gathering probably would not be in the cards now? Maybe a multi part series if videos? Maybe both? Thanks for doing waht you do!!! I really enjoy the content!!! Best Dean
Lexan bent to act as a shield for the high voltage connections. Formed into a U shape just a bit wider than the 2X4 bolted into place. Keeps things accessible but very safe and on budget
It is easy to shift without de-clutching. Just use the accelerator to transition torque through zero, while applying very slight pressure to the shift lever. Trans will shift to neutral when torque reaches zero. Then use slight pressure again toward the next gear and use the accelerator to transient ion through synchronous speed for the new gear ratio. It will fall into gear when the speeds match.
It looks like there would be enough room for 3 sets of batteries back there. Not sure if they are available or in the budget. Just thinking it might help with the range.
Not everyone is technical but I absolutely love this stuff. I can’t wait to see this car working. Makes me want to do this myself but I know I’ll never find deals like you did. I’ll live vicariously through you on this one. Cool build man.
Use ratchet straps to hold the batteries down and just have them on forklift battery connectors (the same connector as your safety kill). That way you could swap batteries super quick.
I was thinking turn the batteries 90 degrees and put them on a pull out bed with QD. You should be able to get a 3rd set now that they removed the backseat
Hey, Rich.. LeMons racer, here.. don't stop! Hope to see you at NHMS in October! Unsolicited advice 1) don't worry about the $500--you could race your Audi, you'd just get a million penalty laps. Something as cool as your Mini is exactly what they want. 2) the rollcage is prob the most scrutinized part of inspection; build it, then everything else. Really want to race against this car!
a couple or four heavy duty ratchet straps for the batterys, bolt down u-bolts to the chassi, thick and wide plate on bottom side of chassi to ratchet onto. cheap quick and safe
Well they removed the engine, but kept the transmission. But they are also adding a lot of weight to the back. Likely to wheelie, no. More possible with the shift of center of gravity, yeah.
Hello, I've been in engineering for a while and I have been a mechanic. If you know about 3 phase AC motors, using a VFD or variable frequency drive you would get high revs for speed and more foot pounds of torque to your transmission. Check out using large Maxwell capacitors instead of batteries.they are less money and more power than those heavy batteries. That DC motor looks like a forklift motor maybe. Research the 3 phase motor and see if it works for you
I would add some heat insulation to that emergency contactor, because if there is a fault that short-circuits it could be come so hot that you won't be able to pull it with your bare hands. Just a thought!
Hey Rich, thank you for your great work making these videos man! I know you are not asking my opinion (probably the car is already finished as I'm writing this) but be careful, these cables at 15:26 (between the battery and the door latch) may get crushed if you get rear-ended.
I am really enjoying your videos. I learn something new everytime because of your tech knowledge, also you and your friends/team are hilarious. 😊🙏🏿🇬🇧🇦🇬
The GP has a rear seat delete, so no big deal there. However, I was thinking turn the batteries 90 degrees so they run fore and aft instead of sideways. Then you don't have to hump the forward battery up and over the rear. If you had Left and Right orientation, they're independent if you need to remove just one. Plus, you can move them forward as a pair for weight balance tuning. Maybe there's isn't room enough to have them in that orientation with the foot plate on.
That looped safety disconnect on an anderson type plug is interesting, especially for a LOTO situation.I'm used to the spring loaded button on an industrial "decontactor" which will disconnect by like an inch or so while shielded. Then you can either twist it apart for Lock Out (an annoying lid flicks down over the ouchey bits) or just push back into the fitting to reset the springs. Pretty sure enough inertia would set it off too though. Your plug is simple & i likey, consider it stolen, It maybe just needs a safety trap to spring over covering the Sam's stepmoms, when you pull out in an emergency.
I'm up to 40 cars now. It's good to have a supportive parent.
