- Let's pit two of America's greatest sports cars in a drag race. Except, this isn't a 1/4 mile drag race, we're going all the way out to a half mile on this one to see who is the king of straight line speed. Both cars are factory stock, running on 93 octane. C7 Z06 makes 650HP and Hellcat is rated for 707HP.

tires make all the difference. for sure hellcat with good tires should beat a stick z06 on top due to bigger blower and better breathing imo

I totally agree with you. Nowadays the gaps are so close on 1/4mi times. Lots of cars make big hp, but with the high speeds , now you need Aero also. Times sure have changed

@@seankeys5384 I'm not a Dodge fan by no means, I have a few 5500 dodges for work and thats it, but anyhow a race is a race.You can make it whatever you want, 1/4mi, 1/2mile, 40-140, whatever. A smart racer will set it up so he has the advantage. I have been beaten more then once over the years because I let the other guy setup the terms. Often on the street you aren't able to do a dig race, very common to be from a roll.

Well again I will sick with an automatic 8 speed with non-track model. No rear and front large spoilers or spliters. 2019 Z06 1LZ the lightest of all Corvette Z06 models. Then we don't have to say " I could of, should of, would have". Again excellent video! Miss your Z06 1LZ silver bullet. You know what that vehicle can do!
I'm a vette guy, but we're talking 650hp vs 707hp. The vette is a lot more aerodynamic, which might help in a 1 mile. The hellcat on the other hand, while less aerodynamic, was designed as a drag car for the quarter mile. Half mile is only twice as long, which means that there isn't enough time for the vette's aero to affect the race.
Therefore, if the hellcat had wider tires, it should, in theory, have won.
I'm gonna have to go with the Corvette. This will be interesting though!

Love the video! If I may ask why are you using the paddle shifters? The auto mode is quite a bit quicker.
Thank you. I do a lot of acceleration testing with dedicated timing equipment and I found that in the 1/2 mile and 60-130 range, auto and manual modes had very little difference. Roughly +/-0.06 seconds. The fastest time of 8.11 seconds posted on the board was achieved by shifting manually.

I was really surprised with how well the hellcat pulled later in the 1/2 mile. I would think it would lose out in the end with bad aerodynamics, but I guess that extra 50 horsepower helps
Even though the Hellcat has a poor drag co-efficient, the Z06 with any aero level package creates so much down force that it just hinders the top end speed.

Great information and I just traded up from a srt 392 Challenger to a Challenger hellcat , raced 392 last year at wanna go fast. Now I'm racing next month at same avent. Will use some of your imput. I'm also a double amputee using ✋ controls.
Why are you shifting the cat manually ? its faster when u let it shift itself
Your Rite. Plus 1st gear rev limit in all Hellcat are 5300 rpm! So Manually shifting you have to shift before that 5300 rpm or it will smack itself!
I thought the same thing. But when we did the acceleration tests, we did 3 runs with each mode and they all came out to +/- 0.06 seconds of each other so the difference is negligible. The fastest runs actually happened to be from shifting manually and it gave me more control over the traction issue, which is why I chose to race in manual mode.
As a 2017 cat owner I disagree with you. I’d like to see it with the tranny doing the work. I got my best 1/4 mile times with the tranny doing the work.
I think the TCU programming is optimized for 1/4 mile which is where most folks race. I focus more on 1/2 mile and 60-130 which tests the car in a slightly different way. I've tested quite a few cars by now and I have found that in most cases, the computer is smarter than me. But for this particular event, the data showed that in the 1/2 mile, and 60-130, shifting manually and full auto had very little affect on the times/trap speed. Not saying you're wrong, just saying my results were different because of the circumstances (traction problems, no prep on the air strip, longer playing field, etc.)
If both cars were running drag radials, what do you think the outcome would be? Both amazing cars and cool video!
My theory is, if both cars ran DRs and had no problems hooking off the line and perfect shifting, it'd be really close though. Only because the Z06 would be in the lead up until about 125-130 and the Hellcat would need to reel it in and overtake which takes quite a bit of effort. But because it traps ~4MPH higher in the 1/2 mile, there is a chance it has enough to pull ahead. So IMO, really damn close, but in real world situation like this, I think the Z06 still has the advantage.

Great vid as always. I’m seriously looking into getting the red eye and even with 305’s it will be a prob to put power down. I’m thinking 315 drag radials are going to be a must. I currently run stock tires on my 18 1LE. Anybody out there have a particular brand recommend ?
I personally run NT05R's for the rears on my Z06 and they hook pretty nicely plus they double great as a street tire. MT Street SS's are better but I hear they aren't as street friendly.
Look into the new S007As. They're the replacement tire for the RE11s. I had RE11s on my 2018 ZL1 1LE and I got excellent traction in 1st and 2nd. You'll hook up perfectly with your LT1 with these. I got the S007As on my Daily (MK7 Golf R) and they're perfect. Stiff sidewall for great response and plenty sticky. I'll be taking it to a short track this weekend, I'll let you know how they stack up.

Another thing to consider is all the aero bits on the Z06 slow it down at higher speeds. So the longer the race the worst the drag will get for the Corvette especially if it has the 2 or 3LZ package with the bigger wings.

I have ran the half mile in my stock Z06 with A8 Auto trans several runs. My mph was 154 to 156?
Yep. Narrator first of all said the manual is faster in the 1/2 mile which is 100% BS unless the A8 was in "weather mode." Secondly, the narrator completely failed to mention the full stage 2 Aero that creates at least a 4 to 5 mph difference in the 1/4 mile alone and about 30mph top speed. He lost a ton of credibility with this one.

A simple tune will dramatically improve the the Z06 on top end. They pull way too much timing stock for overprotective warranty purposes. Intake and tune on the Z06 raises the trap speed 8-9mph in the quarter. You wouldn’t pick up more than 3-4mph from just intake and tune on a Hellcat.

Erek K Prove it? Dude it’s open source info. Tune without a pulley swap is a minimal gain for a Hellcat. The Hellcat forums will tell you that. You don’t waste the cost of a tune on a Hellcat without a pulley swap. Unless you want to waste your money. There’s little to gain from just a tune on a Hellcat. Dodge actually put an aggressive tune on the Hellcat from the factory. Pulley down and there’s plenty more. The C7Z06 makes about 560rwhp on a dyno at ~24 degrees of timing advance. But on the street it pulls timing advance down to ~17 degrees by the end of the quarter mile. That phenomenon might explain the drastic change in yank you saw from start to end of the video. I street race every week and Hellcat’s regularly dyno ~100 more rwhp than the Z06’s. And the Z06’s eat those fat cats up from start to finish with just a tune vs a stock Hellcat. GM fucked up on the C7Z06.
SRT Mob no shit! A better comparison would be similar pulley and tune C6ZR1 vs Hellcat. Which you don’t see similarly modded C6ZR1’s getting yanked by Hellcat’s. Stock C7Z06’s are shit. Hell the stock the C6Z06 (505hp) is just as fast as the C7Z06 (650hp). If the c7Z was actually 650hp it would destroy the C6Z Unless it weighed over 4000 lbs. Hellcat’s are great from the factory and respond well that mods. The C7Z is shit from the factory and responds extremely well from mods to a point. The tiny blower on the Z limits it to ~700rwhp. The Hellcat can make over 800rwhp with the stock blower.
@@jpschargedhere is your open source info. Z06s average about 128mph in the qtr, stock. If you look at all of the cars with mods, no one is putting up 8-9mph extra with just a tune and intake. That was easy.

Nope, I still have the C7Z. I was just driving the Hellcat for a few days for this racing event while in Florida.
I saw a hellcat at the dodge place, 60k miles by a older lady, rear end had to be replaced , valve in head broke head replaced, and brakes shot !
Rear ends suck and those brakes get eaten up because it's so heavy and the pads they use cause mad brake dust. I changed mine because of this problem and have needed a new rear end but was under warranty so it was covered. As for the valves idk they were probably romping on it for a lot of miles you dont know what people do maybe nitrous or lack of general up keep who knows. Point is you dont buy a car with a lot of hp with 60k on it unless your looking for a project. Had mine since 16 and has 35k on it now got it at 4k miles and havent had any real problems other than brakes and rear end slip when I turned other than that it's a very reliable and strong vehicle and a great platform to mod.

Cars are doing 135 to 140 in the 1/4 mile.now.
The McLaren 720.lambo hurcan 630hp.Porsche gt2 RS 690hp. The Audi r8 v10 plus 600hp. Ferrari 488 660hp was trapping around 139mph too. Those cars almost hitting 140mph. What would they hit in the 1/2 mile?
That's a great point and question. I'm actually a big proponent of half mile racing. People are starting to move towards this more and more, the only problem is finding an official strip that can support it. Most half mile's are done on airstrips with portable timing equipment so the results are sometime's slightly off. My guess is that something like a 720S would trap over 170MPH in the half, which is insane.
